It’s Official…Atlantic Records Signs Jason Castro

It’s official.   Jason Castro is signed by Atlantic Records. But, we knew that already.

From the press release:

Game of Thrones Episode 2: The Lost...
Game of Thrones Episode 2: The Lost Lords Review

Atlantic Records has announced the signing of singer/songwriter Jason Castro.   The Texas-based tunesmith ‘ best known as the third runner-up on the 2008 season of Fox American Idol ‘ is currently hard at work on his debut album, set for release later this year.   Among his creative collaborators are Grammy Award-winning producer John Fields (Lifehouse, Switchfoot, Soul Asylum) and a number of acclaimed songwriters, including Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson, Jewel, Santana), Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall), Sacha Skarbek (James Blunt, Jason Mraz), Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams), and Jason Reeves (Colbie Caillat).

With that group of A-listers on board, it’ll be interesting to see what he comes up with.   Maybe now Jason can finally shake that slacker rep he’s got… Heh.

Congrats to Jason. He joins fellow Season 7 alums Michael Johns and Brooke White, who are also releasing albums this year.   Carly Smithson just finished an album she’s shopping around to labels, and Syesha Mercado and Chikezie are both recording right now.

David Cook, David Archuleta, Kristy Lee Cook and Amanda Overmyer all released albums in 2008.

After the Jump, watch Jason at work with Kara DioGuardi and John Fields in the studio:

  1. Yay! I love Jason, I really hope this album goes well for him. He’s got some great people with him.

  2. Congrats Jason. With that group of A-listers on board, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be interesting to see what he comes up with. Maybe now Jason can finally shake that slacker rep heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gotà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Aww…. I prefer to call him chill.
Any other way he wouldn’t be Jason!

  3. Congrats to Jason. Funnily enough, he’s the one S7 contestant I saw benefitting from going indie and being a big fish in a small pond (like Elliott did) but obviously the resources and promo provided by a major label cannot be matched by indie, so this is probably better for him.

Just so I’m clear – out of the 3 S7 Idols gearing to release an album (Jason, Michael and Brooke) he’s the only one who got a major, right?

  4. Good for Jason. Glad it’s official.

Nevermind. Yup, I guess he was the third runner up. He had some lovely and very memorable performances on Idol last year. Looking forward to hearing his album.

  5. Aw, I’m happy for him! I have such a soft spot for the Season 7 contestants, and I always liked Jason. His studio recordings last year were really good.

    Looking forward to the album.

  6. 4th Place Record Deals

S1: Tamyra Gray – 19 Records, subsequently dropped (major)
S2: Josh Gracin – Lyric Street (major)
S3: LaToya London – Peak Records, subsequently dropped (independent)
S5: Chris Daughtry – RCA Records (major)
S6: LaKisha Jones – Elite Music LLC (independent)
S7: Jason Castro – Atlantic Records (major)

  7. Im so excited for him. He deserves this chance. Make it happen, Jason! Cant wait to hear what he comes up with.

  8. Jolene, I was thinking the same thing about Jason being better suited for an Indie instead of a major label, but Atlantic has some pretty quirky artists on it, including Jason Mraz, Paolo Nutini, and Bjork, so hopefully they’ll treat Jason right.

    List of Atlantic artists:

    http://www.atlanticrecords.com/artists

It’s very nice to see Jason Castro on the list, right next to Jason Mraz. Maybe Jason C will get to open for Jason M at some point.

ETA: Tony, you listed every season but Season 4. Who was 4th that year? They didn’t get signed at all? I didn’t realize that the 4th placers had been that successful (except I knew about Daughtry, of course!).

  9. So now that hes signed to a major, does that mean when his album drops, we get to see him all over TV promoting it and interviewing ( ha ha) and he gets to tour????

  10. 4th Place Record Deals

S2: Josh Gracin – Lyric Street (major)

S6: LaKisha Jones – Elite Music LLC (independent)
S7: Jason Castro – Atlantic Records (major)

Who came in fourth place on season 4? I’m sure they are feeling pretty bad by now.

  11. Way to go Jason!!!!!!! I am so happy for him.

I would totally go see him in concert if he opens for someone and comes near me.

  12. Holy crap!! Lifehouse! Switchfoot! Mraz! KTT!

  13. Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams)

OMG, total flashback to when I was a HUGE Robbie Williams fan a few years ago (He’s a superstar everywhere in the world except the US, it seems). Guy Chambers is really talented so I’d be curious to see what he does with Jason.

  14. 4th place on season 4, would that be Anthony Federov?

I am really happy for Jason and looking forward to his new music.

  15. Yay Jason! And yay Season 7!

Also, I thought it interesting that some of the acts mentioned above had hired-gun collaborators (i.e., songwriters who are not otherwise recording artists themselves (Dianne Warren being the prime example)). I had thought that Mraz, Tunstall and Caillat were pure singer/songwriters. I guess almost all acts are like this nowadays?

  16. I’m very happy that Jason was signed and is working with bigshots! Can’t wait for his album. Glad to see that there are still smart people out there who see potential in artists. Go Jason!

  17. Just wondering, does season 7 have the most Idols that have record deals out of the top 11? I don’t remember it being so many in previous seasons, especially within the first year, but maybe I just wasn’t aware of it.

  18. Glad to finally see confirmation on Jason’s deal. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with. I wish him the best of luck. :)

  19. “Just wondering, does season 7 have the most Idols that have record deals out of the top 11? I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember it being so many in previous seasons, especially within the first year, but maybe I just wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t aware of it.”

I think S5 may have them beat:
1 (Taylor) RCA, then dropped, now indie
2 (Kat) since dropped by RCA, picked up by Verve
    3 (Elliott) indie
    4 (Daughtry) RCA
5 (Paris) indie–family run, does it count?
    6 (Pickler)
? (Bucky) Lyric street I think
    ? (Ace) indie
    ? (Mandisa) indie

(Can you tell which was my favorite season?)

    How many does S7 have?

  20. Holy crap. I’ve been reading the rumors and all that since last week, but that’s my reaction: holy crap!

Good for you Jason – wishing you everything good.

  21. for lex —

itsalleternal posted this in the Headlines thread:

Here are the statuses of the Season 7 finalists (label/distributor):

    David C – RCA/Sony BMG
    David A – Jive/Sony BMG
    Syesha – unsigned
    Jason – Atlantic/Warner
    Brooke – Sanctuary/Universal
    Carly – unsigned
Kristy Lee – unsigned (was Arista Nashville/Sony BMG)
    Michael – TRP/Universal
    Ramiele – unsigned?
    Chikezie – unsigned
Amanda – owns her own label/independent
    David H – Genre/Bungalo/independent

Chikezie is supposedly working on an album and was rumored to be working with Universal too.

Without counting Chikezie and counting KLC who was signed and dropped all within 6 months (it seems), S7 may have S5 beat. Assuming, of course, that everyone who is signed ultimately releases something.

  22. Good for Jason! Can’t wait for some new music from him :) Sounds like he’s working with a great team of people!

  23. I’m very happy for Jason. He’s been working on his CD for a while. It’s nice that the official announcement has been made and that there’s more info on who he’s been working with and writing with for his CD.

    Summer can’t come soon enough.

I never got a slacker vibe from Jason but then I was a fan so I had read up on him and watch videos of him and knew that he was a national honor’s graduate and had gone to college on a merit scholarship. I knew that he had taught himself the guitar and to sing. I noticed that he sung part of two songs in a different language, Spanish and French, for two of the songs on the show. I realized that when playing instruments on the show, the contestants had to not only learn the words to the songs but had to also learn the music and arrangement on the musical instrument, guitar or piano. That was extra work for the ones doing it.

    He’s actually a laid-back perfectionist.

  24. Thanks, Keel–that certainly is quite few, but S5 still has S7 beat for now.
Counting KLC, not Chikezie or the other unsigned contestants, S5 has 9, and S7 has 8 (unless my basic math skills are not working today which is always a possibility)

Anyway, I’m surprised Jason got signed to a major. I never thought he was much more than a coffee shop crooner, myself. Go figure.

  25. Not surprising, lex, being that season 5 has has about two more years to make albums. When all is said and done, however, it’s difficult at this point to say which season will have had more successful albums…especially with how subjective “successful” is. I don’t know that it’s a contest anyhow. I’m delighted for anybody trying to make their dream come true. I happen to also think that success is measured differently by each contestant too.

ETA and Josiah would make it a tie I guess. Unsure if he counts but I’d think he believes he counts if it helps him. If not, he will pretend he had nothing to do with Idol…

  26. Just wondering, does season 7 have the most Idols that have record deals out of the top 11?

Amanda self-released her album to the best of my knowledge, she isn’t signed to an indie label. I don’t think that counts as a “record deal” since no one actually gave her money to make an album.

Season 7 has 4 major label artists (The Davids, KLC & now Jason) and 2 verified indie deals (Michael, Brooke). What’s up with David H. though? Is that a real label? Is he working on an album? I didn’t hear any announcement about it.

  27. Congrats to Jason! I loved him on the show, and I’m glad he’s getting a chance! Hope they reallly promote him and he gets a song on the radio, because I think he totally deserves it. Can’t wait to get the album!

  28. Yay for Jasonnn!!!!! I’m so excited to hear his album. I think he’ll do really well.

  29. Here’s the thing: for any Idol contestant, winner or no, the access to A-list SONGS is the key.

Elliott signed to the leading music publisher in the world, and Sony/ATV writers ante-d up for him. Jason was given access to really great and expensive co-writers/producers through Atlantic. So in that sense, the indie route of Elliott and the major route of Jason is the same.

Sony/ATV Publishing is one of the big four publishers in the world, so on that level, it’s not indie/DIY kind of thing. If Elliott had signed to 19/J/ODL, he would never be first on the list for the best song material. Sony/ATV staff writers like Stargate kicked in. Atlantic had the budget to sit Jason down with the A-listers. Good for them both.

  30. I’m so happy for Jason and can’t wait to hear/buy his album. His list of collaborators sound pretty darn awesome! Go Jason!

  31. David Hernandez has a single out, it is “Yo Name” and on iTunes.

It appears that Syesha, Carly, Ramiele and Chikezie are the ones still waiting for deals. Ramiele did release a single at Christmas but on her own.

Among semi-finalists, only Jason Yeager has something out (Kady Malloy did but it was pulled from the market); season 5 had a lot more semi-finalists release music.

  32. Thanks, Keelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’that certainly is quite few, but S5 still has S7 beat for now.
Counting KLC, not Chikezie or the other unsigned contestants, S5 has 9, and S7 has 8 (unless my basic math skills are not working today which is always a possibility)

Oh, okay. I wasn’t counting any of the “indie” labels other than Eliot because I wasn’t sure what that meant. It could mean completely DIY (like Amanda) or something beyond that, but unless I had heard of their albums, I wasn’t counting them. Also, I realized I just skipped over Pickler because it didn’t say anything, but of course, she is most definitely signed.

It’ll be interesting to see if S7 yields any more peeps who are signed to labels. I’m kinda gung-ho on Carly, especially if, as she has hinted, she’s writing with Daughtry on at least one song. And, of course, I’m wishing Chikezie all the best in his talks/deal with Universal.

  33. I am so freaking happy. Couldn’t decide if the continued delay meant Jason was doomed to slip into the land of the forgotten or if it meant some really sweet deal was being put together. Sooooo glad it’s the the latter. Love the amount of talent they have made available to him. Even though the indie thing may have seemed like a natural fit for Jason, I like the idea of him getting hold of some really good material. Much better chance of success that way. I am indeed stoked!!
    :thumbup_tb:
Anybody know the anticipated drop date?

  34. This is great news! I sure hope PJ sees this!!!! Nice going Jason… looking forward to your music!

When looking at idol successes, I’d look not only at who has been signed but also look at who made cds and did anyone buy them. Since it’s Jason’s thread, I’ll just leave it at that… :) I’m betting Jason’s is going to be good -really good.

  35. Including semi-finalists, Season 5 has the other seasons beat by a long shot.

An astonishing 15 out of 24 have albums out or will this year. (Semifinalists with stuff out or coming – Ayla, David, Heather, Patrick, Stevie, Will)

  36. Hurrah for Jason! He’s been working hard on his cd and it was just a matter of getting all the ducks in a row. Most songwriters have collaborators if only to tune the songs up a bit. Anyway, looking forward to the cd!

  37. I never thought of Jason as a slacker, but very relaxed, which I think is cool. Today when everyone’s in such a hurry and too busy to enjoy life, I think Jason has the right idea. I like how he marches to his own drum (no pun intended).

  38. For some reason (even though he wasn’t my top fav last yr.), I never doubted that Jason was working on something and that it would be good. I am so excited for him!! :) I’ll try not to get my hopes up too high though for the final product, like I seem to do. But I can’t wait!

eta: heh, who am I kidding, I think this album has potential for some real awesomeness!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. I hope he does well and create awesome music. From his collaborators, Atlantic wants him to be the next Jason Mraz or someone like him, and honestly, I don’t disagree. I think his vibe and his performances always gave up that vibe, and it’s that vibe that a lot of the audiences responded to, so good on him.

  40. Yay for Jason!!! I know he’s going to be really successful, he has the ability to make you feel the song.

  41. Look, kids, Slezak has joined the party.

First, a big group hug to sumidol, pj and all the other Jason fans who kept the faith through PaulaGate, Nigel’s bus o’ death, and all the rampant skepticism. Our Jason’s going to the majors!

    :clap_tb:

    WOO HOO!

    :clap_tb:

Look at the big bucks talent that Atlantic has surrounding Jason. They like him. They really like him.

  42. “Anyway, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m surprised Jason got signed to a major. I never thought he was much more than a coffee shop crooner, myself. Go figure.”

But that style is big now. Like others are pointing out: with the right songs, Jason Castro could hit the Mraz/Caillat market and do nicely for himself.

There’ll be plenty of angst and complaints to make about lack of promotion and all that down the road but for now it’s just a big congratulations to Jason. I hope the album’s awesome because he and Brooke were the 2 from S7 I was hoping to be able to buy albums from.

  43. This is absolutely amazing for Jason. Congratulations. He looks like he is surrounded by incredible talent. Good for him.

  44. This is such wonderful news for Jason! His fans are pleased, as will be others. Working with such creative collaborators shows that the label has confidence in his ability to achieve success.

windmills, Brooke was my second favorite from Season 7. I’d love to see Brooke and Jason tour as they promote their albums. That is, tour together!

  45. I’m really happy for him. He’s a special dreaded dude! I’ll never forget his Hallelujah and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Something sincere and deep about him, esp. for his age. Has a lovely voice. Normal still, despite the fame machine, and philosophical about things. I can’t wait to buy his stuff. Good for him.

  46. Slezak is the biggest Jason fangirl. His write up in response to Jason’s record deal is hilarious.

Right now I’m just happy for Jason. I agree with windmill in that I’m sure they’ll be enough arguments down the pike in terms of promotion, quality of material for the cd, sales and all that good stuff.

But right now this is an incredible accomplishment for him and I think it in part also shows that laid back doesn’t necessarily equal slacker. If so, the slacker guy has done pretty well finding a way for himself so far.

  47. windmills, Brooke was my second favorite from Season 7. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to see Brooke and Jason tour as they promote their albums. That is, tour together!

I’d love that. And I’d love it even more if they went here to the Philippines! They’re my top 2 from last season and I am so excited to hear their new music!

  48. Season 7 was awesome. Such a great group. And I loved Jason last year and have followed him post Idol. He is such a sweet, talented kid. I wish him the best. I am so glad that he is getting the chance to work with really solid people in the industry. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised when his album hits. He is not the same shy, inexperienced kid we saw on Idol last year. :)

  49. *waves back at Terrie*

Honestly, I think Jason is one of the few that have been signed by a major label outside of the 19 family, so that’s an extra screw you to TPTB. LOL.

I’m freaking happy at this news being official. :-) It’s totally tubular. Okay, I’m in CA. Cut me some slack. ;-)

  50. Hahahahaha… totally tubular! When I saw this news I wasn’t sure who to be more happy for… Jason or you, PJ! He’s very talented and has something special. I’m glad someone was smart enough to realize it.

  51. Very cool for Jason! He wasn’t my main guy for last season but I love his folk style.

Season 7 is amazing…now we just need Carly to get a deal and I’ll be satisfied!

  52. OMG ! I came to watch DWTS vids and see that my boy is moving on up !

PJ, I remember us whining in chat when he was booted. Wahhhhhhh. Good sports that we are we voted for Cookie !

Weird, I switched from PC to Mac and lost all my itunes, including Jason’s.

This weekend I found them on an EHD and listened to his songs and thought, I can’t believe he didn’t get a record deal because his voice records so well.

    BOOM !

  53. OH my – I am sooooooooo freaking happy, I knew I knew I knew it, others were saying his 15 minutes was over, I said he is taking his time and doing it right, I say, how could anyone not look at and listen to this wonderful person and not know that good things would come his way. I am not always right, not at all but in this one instance and with this one person I felt it in my gut. whooo whhoooo!

Just had to add, not any of US thought he wouldnt make – not ANY of us “crack” addicts doubted Jason, last year was so fun with all of our crack threads! Oh hi Terrie!!!!!! yay

I just read Slezak and Memory was one of my favorite too, it touched me watching him struggle thru and make it his, all the while sick as all get out but not letting on.

  54. Just to show that Jason is still Jason. His record deal was annouced yesterday and he’s tweeting about how hard it is to get up in the morning. No mention of anything else. Like Brooke, you can follow Jason on twitter. Though his updates are generally very random.

    http://twitter.com/THEJasoncastro

  55. he has face and voice that sells…i knew last year he would be signed..his face alone sells thousands…and listening to his post idol stuff…he clearly has the skills…good songwriter…great with melodies..connects well with his material…he basically has all the skills necessary for great success

  56. I’m so happy for Jason, and all of us, too. Yippee! :clap_tb:

    Is it here, yet? :jittery_tb:

  57. windmills, Brooke was my second favorite from Season 7. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to see Brooke and Jason tour as they promote their albums. That is, tour together!

As sweet as that would be it’s just such a really bad idea. The two of them together would only bring idol fans.
I think Jason should (and I’m sure that is probably the idea) open for some band/artist non idol related. Play for a brand new audience. Idols all should go a different way. And I think Jason can find someone to open to, it doesn’t even have to be from Atlantic.

  58. Thanks for that twitter link. Jason was at the Hannah Montana taping. Jason and David A really are good buds.

  59. I am so freakin’ excited! = ) I am a HUGE Jason fan….I’ve watched the show every year, and he was the first contestant to ever motivate me to vote or to go to the tour! I knew it would happen eventually…I’m glad he took his time with things, even though I am *inpatiently* waiting for a CD….LOL I just hope he gets to remain *Jason* and I hope they don’t try to change him. I am thrilled to death that he has gotten on with a good label and working with such big people…but I just pray they don’t have a completely different direction they want to go with him…because I absolutely love Jason’s style of writing.

And Sumidol….you mentioned those crack threads….LOL…man I miss last year! And I agree with you on Memory…that performance really touched me, and I thought they were way harsh on him. He put more emotion into his version than I have heard before. I could go on and on…let me stop…LOL

    Yay Jason!!!!!

I was just answering someone else’s question about CDs from the Top 11, I don’t really have a vested interest in which season produces more CDs or more viable artists for that matter. I was just adding my bit of info about S5 in comparison as someone else posted their info of S7. Sorry if you took this as “being a contest” to show which season was better or something, that is all very subjective and not my intent. Also, I never said anything about successful albums, just how many from the season got signed. And I was only using those who got signed within the year or so post-Idol. I just think it is amazing how many albums can come out of one season, really.

Please don’t read comments of “success” into my post, they weren’t there. Just an interesting observation (that someone else brought up) I thought.

  61. Thanks for that twitter link. Jason was at the Hannah Montana taping.

Jason’s little 13 year old sister went out to visit him for her spring break last month. He took her to the taping and lots of other places. She had a blast.
