Meghan Trainor does take the top of the BB200 and Album sales charts with 238K and 195K respectively. BB mentions Idol and BGT in the article since Meghan’s debut is the biggest for a solo artist since Scotty McCreery’s “Clear as Day” opened with 197K in October of 2011 and the biggest debut of a single female artist since Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream opened with 701K in November 2009 (I’d think I was dreaming if I saw a reality star open that big these days). The last album to open bigger than Meghan in January was our old friend, Justin Bieber whose acoustic “Believe” opened with 211K in January of 2013. BB goes onto dismiss Scotty’s and Susan’s achievements by saying they had massive television promo prior to their releases because they were on popular television shows. I’d like to know how Susan being on a show not shown in the US allows us to dismiss her US sales. In the US, she’s as much a youtube star as Justin was. Sure, she’s a gimmick that Simon found and popularized on a TV show, but her popularity in the US started elsewhere. TV picked it up later. Get your facts right, BB.
Kidz Bop 27 sells 77K, their 20th top 10 album and their best seller since 23 which opened with 81K. They end up third on the BB200 based purely on album sales. Ed Sheeran’s “x” is 4th with 47% of his 77K in sales being from albums. Also with 77K in fifth is Mark Ronson with 81% of his sales from TEAs and SEAs. Three albums round to 77K in three very different ways. I have to like that. Adam Levine’s Maroon 5 created magic with their last video. “Sugar”‘s wedding crasher themed video went viral propelling the overall sales to increase by 138% and album sales by 158%. That’s a video that does its job!
