When you have 15 minutes to spare, you MUST watch this video featuring American Idol and The Voice alum, Jamar Rogers, sharing his long and unusual road to self-acceptance.
The interview is part of StyleLikeU’s “The What’s Underneath Project” where men and women strip off their clothing while they share “their own struggles and triumphs in order to uplift others into their own personal paths toward self-acceptance.”
Jamar talks about his deeply religious upbringing and how his parents practically disowned him when they found out he was gay. When he was out on his own, he got hooked on crystal meth, and eventually found out he was HIV positive and had full blown aids. There are many twists and turns to this story, including ending up back with his mother, marrying a woman (via the church where he met Danny Gokey) and making the terrifying decision to share his drug addiction/HIV story on The Voice.
All during the monologue, Jamar strips down, eventually to his underwear. But believe me when I say that’s the least interesting aspect of this video. The singer has an amazing story. Make sure to watch.
