Idol Sales News – Week Ending 09/28/14

This week features 3 reality singing show competitors in the top 15 of the album chart as estimated by HDD. Pentatonix from “The Sing Off” leads the charge at 5th with an estimate 47K in sales for 5th. Jennifer Hudson from the 3rd Season of American Idol debuts with 22K in sales for “JHud”. Finally, at 15th we have Jackie Evancho from AGT. Her “Awakening” will likely top the Classical Cross-Over chart this week with about 21K in sales.

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga have likely nosed out Kenny Chesney for the top album this week with sales in the 131K range. Meghan Trainor likely leads the digital and Hot 100 charts with her “All About the Base”. The song has been topping the Hot 100 for the last 3 weeks.

In other news, HDD is predicting a 550K opening for X-Factor’s “One Direction”. Taylor Swift who we frequently discuss here is predicted to open with 1M.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!

  3. For the record since it was mentioned yesterday, I am happy to be reminded of any artist or song that I miss in the updates:)

  4. Chart News @chartnews · 38m 38 minutes ago
    Billboard 200: #10 @IAMJHUD, JHud 24,000 (debut).

    Chart News @chartnews · 43m 43 minutes ago
Billboard 200: #5 @PTXofficial: PTX, Vol. III (EP) 46,000 (debut).

  5. Wow, Taylor expected to open with 1m again! That is 3 times is a row. I don’t think anyone has ever done that. And I believe she is the only country artist to ever open with 1m (I know she is pop now). Can’t say I’m a fan, but that is impressive.

  6. These were predictions. Taylor’s album doesn’t come out until 10/27. I think she’s still going to open with 1 million her debut week. I’m just saying her album isn’t coming out for another few weeks.

  7. Congrats to Tony and Gaga. Several years ago, who would have thought Lady Gaga would top the traditional jazz album charts. :D

Anyone know the last time two artists over 70 topped the album charts in consecutive weeks?

  8. While we’ve talking about Babs and Tony, 80 yo Leonard Cohen’s album debuted with 23k. Not too shabby.

  9. YOUR NEW RELEASES: It looks like Blake Sheltonwill battle Barbra Streisand for next week’s #1. It just so happens that The Voice coach Shelton (seen here in a mullet-tastic pic from more than a decade ago) is one of Streisand’s duet Partners, so he’ll have some claim on the top spot no matter what. Here are this week’s key debuts:

Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 80-90k
    Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville) 65-70k
    Prince (NPG/Warner Bros.) 40-45k
    The Script (Columbia) 24-27k
    Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL (NPG/Warner Bros.) 21-24k
    Tove Lo (Island) 19-22k
    Colbie Caillat (Republic) 17-19k
    Melissa Etheridge (Me) 10-12k
    Gerard Way (Warner Bros.) 10-12k

And yes, Prince is indeed releasing two albums this week, a funky affair under his own name and a rock-skewing workout with distaff trio 3RDEYEGIRL. We’d love 2 know what U think of them. (10/1p)

  10. I know I’m replying to myself. I’m surprised at Blake’s predictions. His single is doing well, has promo for the album, & is a judge on a popular talent show. Not really surprised at everyone else’s predictions.

  11. So we’ll go from a week with 3 100k+ albums, to a week with none predicted.

  13. Congrats to Jennifer on 3 consecutive Top 10 albums!

I was curious which Idol alums has also had 3 consecutive Top 10 albums. Obviously, there are some alums who haven’t released 3 albums (Ex. Adam, Jordin, & Phillip) who could still achieve this. Here’s the list who’s done it: Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, Clay, Kellie Pickler, & Scotty.

  15. Yes. I was going by the list of Idol alums & the peaks of their released albums on Wikipedia.

  16. Phillip seems stuck. I hope he at least moves up to t20 in AAA and t30 in HAC

  17. If Blake is battling for #1 and the high end of his range is 90k, who would be getting 100k+?

  18. Chart News @chartnews · 1h 1 hour ago
    Billboard Hot 100: #96(new) Feelin’ It, @ScottyMcCreery.
