Idol Sales News – Week Ending 01/18/15

Meghan Trainor again exceeds sales projections by selling 196K in her first week. That easily gives her the top of the Album Sales and BB200. When Meghan Trainor’s “All About the Bass” became a big hit driven by sales (radio followed the sales/buzz lead), a lot of people predicted she would be a one hit wonder with such a gimmicky song. But, she followed up with a second hit with “Lips are Movin” (again, buyers seemed to take the lead) and people started taking her more seriously. Even a couple of Pop hits are not necessarily a predictor of album success, so Meghan’s sales are a decent indication that people like and recognize her…not just her one or two songs. This is a very good indication of success. The name of her album is “Title” which is the same name as her EP released late last year.

Taylor Swift is second and we are likely to talk about her in the top 10 for a quite a while. Kidz bop to 3rd on the sales chart, but somehow end up with less sales on the SPS chart. Did people buy the album and send back a few of the singles? Did they stream the songs backward? IDK. BTW, Kidz Bop 25 sold 71,927 this week a year ago – consistent! Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Special” moves past Kidz to be the second highest debut of the week on the SPS/BB200 chart – his single featuring Bruno Mars is out of control.

Ella Henderson from the X-Factor UK franchise has the top reality singing show album of the week. She just misses out the top 10 for sales and BB200 by being 11th on both. Ella opens with 23K in sales, but hopefully her single will continue to move up the chart and support sales. One Direction falls to 18th on the sales chart and 14th on the combined. Carrie Underwood is 16th and 29th respectively.

HDD is predicting that Fall Out Boy will top the chart this coming week. They have nearly 100K in pre-sales and the estimates are that they will end the week with around 200K in sales. Between Taylor and Meghan and FOB, this is turning out to be a very nice January for sales.
