  1. Please delete (I can’t delete the clip!)…I think we posted this at the same time MJ!

  2. 102.5 KDON ?@1025KDON 43m
James Durbin hanging out w/ The KDON Morning Madhouse!

Fun interview this morning. Lots of the usual Durbin crazy, but he did remember to plug the AI “Silver Ticket Audition” judging gig he’s doing with FOX35 on 9/20 and the appearance this Sat. 9/6 with the WAE. ( Interesting tidbit: James mentioned that Barry Phillips will be performing with them on Sat. who also played for Paul McCartney.)

  3. That level of involvement will probably net him a producer credit, especially given that the top-tier Kickstarter donors will get one. It sounds like a worthy project, so I hope it gets some traction.

  4. Seems like the contestants coming off this year’s idol are able to play at gigs a lot sooner then previous years. I know the top 10 use to sign with CAA for management but i doubt that is the case today.

  5. You’re not imagining it… partly because in many prior years, the Idols Live tour wouldn’t be over yet! (Or it might be just winding down, not done a couple weeks ago.)

In most prior seasons, the runner-up and winner would have been finishing their album now, for an October/November release. That also cuts into gigging.

  7. MJ, could it be possile to have the “search” option back on the page? And the chance to see older posts than what are available in the headlines on the right? I’d really appreciate it. I love to follow your blog, but I don’t always have time to come here every day – and the discussions often evolve long. All the best!

  8. “In most prior seasons, the runner-up and winner would have been finishing their album now, for an October/November release.”

Yes, and yet, all this extra availability in the fall hasn’t led to a bunch of gigs or to an accelerated time line for creating a touring band and scheduling tour dates. We still hear nothing about that. The only people to benefit from the quick album was the Label, making a cash grab while they still could. IMO.

  9. Since I don’t see the theme thread, MJ, I’d actually appreciate having a few more comments visible. I tend to find discussions I’m interested in that way. Maybe 10 instead of 5?

  10. Availability is useless if hardly anybody wants you.

The premise of Idol wasn’t to discover great original music (though that’s been a desirable side effect in some seasons) but to launch an artist with a massive fanbase, preferably one that will buy anything for long enough that the label can figure out a commercial angle to support a larger career.

Johnson has, at this point, a track record of fans demonstrably refusing to buy. Anything. Singles, albums, covers, original music, cowrites, songs by hitmakers, Idols Live! tickets, a bus ticket to go to a M&G. New songs, old songs, bluesy, classic rock, karoake, flips — nada.

We’re rapidly comin’ up on the day when I find myself sitting on a bar stool next to him at the Rhythm Room (cap 250, baby!), discussing the music industry, because his fanbase is so small that the rest of them are simultaneously in the ladies’ room.

  11. Don’t think I saw you post this from James twitter–you may know something more??: “James Durbin @DurbinRock
    · Sep 4
For personal reasons, I will NOT be performing at the white album ensemble show this Saturday, Sept. 6th.”
