Pick six: A half-dozen cool things in music

Jason Castro, Target Center. His covering Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” at the “American Idols Live” concert was hip, modern, unexpected and so un-“Idol.” It’s no wonder they didn’t get him on that show.

What’s the Difference Between Sarah Palin and David Cook from American Idol?

Roger Ebert explains why that’s the only difference…

I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin’s appeal. She’s the “American Idol” candidate.

Consider. What defines an “American Idol” finalist? They’re good-looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they’re darned near the real thing.

Celeb Spenders and Savers: Carrie vs. Blake

Both Carrie Underwood and Blake Lively rocked one-shouldered, jewel-toned frocks at different awards shows recently.

Don’t you just love how the carpet colors correspond with the girls’ dresses?

Anyhow, both the American Idol alumna and the Gossip girl showed off toned triceps and buff legs in these glam getups, but one starlet spent more money on her look.

Lance Bass talks to The Advocate about his ‘Dancing With the Stars’ gig…

(Joey) go through it was just amazing and I saw how much fun he had and it didn’t scare me anymore after seeing him do it, ” Lance says in a new interview with The Advocate.

Lance may be an openly gay man but he will be paired with a woman for the competition and not a man as was rumored: “That was just a rumor, for sure. I don’t think anyone dealing with the show … I don’t even think that came across their minds. This competition is for a male and female partner — that’s the way the judges judge. I don’t think it would be an even playing field if we were to do it.”

Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that I’m a pretty big Phil Stacey fan. So it was a pretty big thrill for me to be able to talk to him before he comes to Ashland for Poage Landing Days.

Stacey will perform at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. Saturday’s performers are Carolina Rain at 7:15 p.m., Emily West at 8:30 p.m. and Darryl Worley at 9:45 p.m. Marty Raybon will perform at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21.

Paris Hilton Has A New BFF: Ryan Seacrest?

In his continuing bid to take over the universe, multi-hyphenate Ryan Seacrest has teamed with none other than Paris Hilton to produce a new television show. Here’s the catch: It’s scripted. Here’s hoping neither one of them will be going anywhere near the writers’ room.

Seacrest is known for his ties to reality TV, from hosting the mother of all reality shows — American Idol — to producing several others, including Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Denise Richards: It’s Complicated. Paris has starred in The Simple Life and her own, um, reality videos, and has a new reality competition show coming to MTV this fall.

New Idol Judge: Why Would They Get Rid of Paula?

“Why would they get rid of Paula, who everybody loves, and put some person who no one’s ever heard of in her place? Sounds a little crazy. Sounds like someone had a little too much to drink that night when they made that decision.”

‘ Kara Dioguardi, dismissing rumors she was brought on American Idol to replace Paula, though entertainment writer Spike Feresten has some theories: “Paula is just loopy.”

Here comes the judge

Kara DioGuardi’s father remembers when she was just a 12-year-old from New Rochelle, singing at Manhattan’s Waldolf-Astoria hotel in front of 1, 000 people for a Columbus Day event, whose grand marshal was actress Sophia Loren.

“She brought the house down, ” said Joe DioGuardi, a former Republican Congressman who now lives in Ossining. “Sophia ran up to her and I said, ‘Sophia, can I take this picture?’ And they both looked at me with two of the greatest smiles you could find.”

‘America’s Got Talent’ recap: We have a top ten!

So here I was, all nervous that I was going to have to sit through another two hours of America’s Got Talent ridiculousness. But as one commenter pointed out, last night was only an episode to reveal the top ten! And thankfully, there were actually some surprises. First off, we got to see the ZOOperstars! faces. Well, almost all of them, as Pee Wee Geese was still in costume. But who knew that the ZOOperstars! actually look just like the Cadence? Faux hawks, blazers, fashionable jeans…they should have just danced looking like that. (Watch them performing in costume below.)
