As an accompaniment to the piano, which she taught herself to play. On Wednesday, the Sarcoxie High School junior stood in line at Landreth Park with more than 100 other would-be celebrities hoping to give the performance of her life: a one-minute audition in front of “American Idol” producers for a chance to appear on the show. – Read more at The Joplin Globe

Tour brings all-‘American’ boy to Portland – That pretty much describes the sound of The Dave Matthews Band. And Phillips didn’t try to dodge the comparison in a mid-July phone interview. “It (Phillips’ album) will probably be similar like that, but not quite as funky,” he said. “I met Dave the other day, and he was a really nice guy, and I met Boyd Tinsley (Matthews’ violinist). So they’re really cool. “It will probably be similar, but not quite as — I don’t know how to explain it — but it’s definitely different. It’s probably going to be a little bit more rock mixed with jazz, but more of the rock, probably.” There’s still plenty of work to be done on Phillips’ debut CD, which is targeted for a November release. – Read more at the Portland Press Herald

Backstage with the ‘American Idols’ – “I know it helped the song so much and I’m just so thankful that they wanted to use the song,” the Leesburg, Ga., native said about NBC‘s use of the song, which propelled it to No. 1 on iTunes and into the Top 10 on the Billboard charts. “It helped them get through to do their best. It’s just amazing.” Though Phillips didn’t plan to do his version of Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” at Wednesday night’s concert, he did feel like he should pay homage to the Hicksville native while he was on his home turf. “That was one of my favorite songs that I did on the show,” he said. “He’s an amazing musician.” – Read more at Newsday

Former ‘Today’ Host Meredith Vieira Says Ryan Seacrest ‘Should Be More Scared’ of Matt Lauer (VIDEO) – “I think Ryan is very respectful of Mr. Lauer,” Vieira told Celebuzz this week while promoting the eleventh season of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. “I think Ryan should be more scared of Lauer!” she joked. “He’s a crafty little devil.” “I call Matt the Meercat,” she continued to quip. “Not just because he looks like one.
