Fantasia Q&A: ‘Still Full of Joy’ Ten Years In, Talks Fifth Album & ‘After Midnight’ – Do you plan to hook up again with producer Harmony Samuels for your next album? We’re going back in the studio soon. I feel like I should always do albums with Harmony because he gets me. He’s like my Quincy Jones. We started “Side Effects of You” from scratch with him going to the keyboard and just playing things. I’d be like, “I like that. Keep going.” Whenever you can create an album like that, it’s amazing. You don’t find that anymore. Normally you go into the studio and the producer gives you a track or the song is already written. Harmony allows me to be me. And will the album expand on the “rock soul” fusion you introduced on “Side Effects”? This whole rock soul direction has been on my heart. I’ll always be soulful: I started singing in the church at the age of five. So that will never go anywhere. But there’s a certain side of me that wants to tap into that whole rock world. It’s hard to come from R&B to that. But it’s something I believe in and will fight for. This will be my fifth album and 10 years in the game for me. Musically I’ve grown, and in my life I’ve grown. I want all of that reflected in my music for this album. – Read more at Billboard

Clay Aiken will sing for ‘diamond’ donorsClay Aiken is tapping his “American Idol” fan base to raise money for his congressional campaign, offering a personally recorded song to the top donors. The Democrat’s campaign recently sent an email to 1,000 fans who had already contributed to the campaign asking them to join the CA4NC Circle at one of four levels: Loyalty, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. “You’ve been with Clay from the very beginning and have supported him through every minute of the last 11 years,” wrote Nick Leisey, a longtime Aiken friend who recently joined the campaign as finance director. “Your enthusiasm and support continues to be crucial, this time in helping him claim the seat in NC’s 2nd District.” The Diamond level is reserved for those who give $5,200, the maximum allowed contribution to the campaign. The personalized recording comes on an autographed CD with a handwritten note from Aiken, who finished runner-up on the reality TV show in 2003. – Read more at News Observer

But even Voice coach Adam Levine admits that his show hasn’t come close to being the cultural juggernaut that Idol has been for the past decade or so. Asked by Rolling Stone magazine if he’s been surprised at the “decline” of American Idol, Levine replies, “Idol has to be satisfied with what they’ve accomplished. The Voice is very successful, but it’s got a ways to go if it wants to have as profound an impact as Idol. I’m not going to lie to you: I think there are problems.” – Read more at KMBZ
