Hundreds of ticket holders left out in the cold

SALT LAKE CITY — The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas concert is being described as “spectacular” — if you can get in. Hundreds of ticket holders were literally left out in the cold Thursday night.

Typically, free concerts at the Conference Center are overbooked so all the seats will be filled, but David Archuleta is so popular that the normal no- shows are showing up. That’s creating a shortage of seats, even for people who have a ticket.

Ticket holders are required to be in their seats a half hour before showtime. Thursday night people who were 45 minutes early were turned away.

Underwood gets a Rush

Merrill handed over a silver and black Edmonton Rush jersey to country-singing sensation Carrie Underwood moments before she took to the stage in front of 10, 500 screaming country music fans at Rexall Place.

It was a way for Edmonton’s professional lacrosse franchise to welcome her to Edmonton, said Merrill, the team’s new captain.

“She first thought it was a hockey jersey, and she was a little hesitant, obviously, with her relationship with (Ottawa Senators hockey player) Mike Fisher, ” Merrill said about his visit with Underwood.

“Once we explained to her that it was a lacrosse jersey, she didn’t really know about the game and she was asking so (many) questions about the sport.”

Haiti charity work sees Simon Cowell tipped for British knighthood

British newspaper The Mail on Sunday reported that the former American Idol judge and America’s Got Talent co-creator was under strong consideration to be made a “Sir” after driving fund-raising for victims of January’s Haiti Earthquake.

Cowell raised more than £1 million ($1.55 million) for the earthquake victims with a star-studded charity single. The 51-year-old has also won praise for his role as a strong fund-raiser for UK children’s charities.

The paper quoted a source close to the queen’s 2011 Honours list, which is announced on December 31, as saying the award “will be in recognition of the work he put into the Haiti campaign but also his other charity work.”
