SYTYCD Judge: Why I’m Leaving the Show

Michaels says it was her decision to move on.

“Last year when I was sitting on the [judges] panel, I knew it wasn’t the right fit because I felt too glossy sitting on the panel, ” she exclusively tells us. “People were so focused on what I wore and my hair. I wanted to get dirty and back to the work. I am an artist and I’m a visionary. I need to paint my world now and not be constantly linked to So You think You Can Dance.”

Not that she doesn’t appreciate what SYTYCD has done for her. “It’s been a great platform, ” Michaels says. “It was a wonderful platform. I’m staring at [my] two Emmys right now. It was an amazing, amazing thing for me but I feel like I have to fly. I have to now focus on Mia’s world.”

Sanjaya from ‘Idol’ defends Bristol Palin, ‘DWTS’ voting

So, is Bristol Palin like a “Dancing With the Stars” Sanjaya? She has not been the judges’ favorite, yet is a finalist in tonight’s finale. Some fans and bloggers question viewers’ voting intentions and are asking if the reason she’s a finalist is due to her dancing abilities or her mother’s politics.

Today on American Morning, we ask Sanjaya about the Bristol controversy and his thoughts on how audience vote-in shows are tallied.

How Will Dancing End? Tom Bergeron Relishes the Unpredictable Season

After Dancing with the Stars’ predictable Season 10 — in which practically everyone foresaw Nicole Scherzinger winning — the host was hoping for more surprises from this season’s hodgepodge of evenly matched contenders.

“We got it! Really, it all started with David Hasselhoff [who was eliminated first]. That was the most shocking moment for me, ” Bergeron tells TVGuide.com. “I have no idea what happened there. I was like, ‘What the hell?’ I figured we had at least four good weeks of comedy coming and boom! He’s gone!

  1. Danny’s new Christmas single “Tennessee Christmas” is available for download today on Itunes. I just bought it and it is a beautiful song.

  2. Photos have started to surface of David Cook from the Rolling Stone after party.

And because it is Music Monday – and I want to make sure people saw this – Felicia Barton (S8 – Top 36) says she is working to put out an album and has 2 new songs you can listen to along with some others she has put out.

ETA. I’m glad Mia isn’t going to be a judge next season on SYTYCD – she unfortunately gets a little too personal in her critiques. Still, I am sad it sounds like she isn’t planning to do any choreography since she has created some truly lovely pieces over the years.

  3. Reminder:

Please don’t advertise monetized links from other blogs. Girl’s got to make a living here! I’ll put up my own link in a bit.

  4. Adding “Finally Got It Right” to the Farmer’s Daughter (as predicted by Neg The Magnificent) pre-order is a great bonus. Definitely one of my favorites.

  5. Photos have started to surface of David Cook from the Rolling Stone after party.

Mmm me thinks someone is working with a stylist again. And I love that he was out having a good time at a hot party while a couple of some of his whacked out, unstable fans were completely cracking on Twitter last night. Good to see hes handling being “betrayed” so well and he wasnt actually tied up in a basement or something! *snort*

ETA: Good grief what the hell was Ke$ha wearing that RS party? Katy Perry may suck as a live singer but at least she dresses nice..

  6. Mmm me thinks someone is working with a stylist again. And I love that he was out having a good time at a hot party

He looked good. This may be the start of him getting back out into the PR seeking world. DC doesn’t go to stuff like that unless they make him. LOL

  7. Mention of Adam and AMAs and American Idol (comparing to Pink’s performance)

    http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/22/pop-quiz-the-american-music-awards/

    3. The note that Pink hit at the end of her performance of “Raise Your Glass” was:
    (a) meant to shatter any remaining glasses she did not already break over the heads of her dancers
    (b) intended to disrupt a pack of wild dogs attacking Ryan Seacrest off camera
    (c) sufficiently in tune to qualify her as a finalist on any given season of “American Idol”

  8. Nice to see the pictures of David from the Rolling Stone party – Thanks mj.

Trina – your post cracked me up almost as much as David wearing the “Kiss on the Neck” necklace to a party in Hollywood…considering the lyrics. I haven’t seen that since around Christmas time last year or the year before?….and it still makes me *chuckle*.

  9. Here is a link to a review from yesterday of last week’s Anna Wilson concert at the Grand Ole Opry in which Matt performed with her at the close of the show.

    http://www.wineandjazz.com/posts/jazzcountry-singer-anna-wilson-goes-countrypolitan-at-the-grand-ole-opry/

And here’s the part about Matt:

She closed by bringing down the house with an incredibly soulful rendition of Walker’s jazz/country standard “You Don’t Know Me,” performed with the brilliant, versatile and stylish Giraud. What a treat it was later, at the afterparty at the swanky Hermitage Hotel, to hear Anna and Giraud reprise the song more casually at the piano in the hotel lobby with a crowd gathered around them. This was a moment topped only perhaps by me dueting with Giraud when he played Elton’s classic “Tiny Dancer”!

Also, I haven’t seen a video of the Grand Ole Opry performance posted on MJs, so here it is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sPEdgrRWBg

  10. Hope that Mia hasn’t completely sworn off choreography for SYTCD. … I would think not — doing a knock-out piece on national television now and then wouldn’t do anything but help her cause of getting an audience for her work, I would think. I won’t miss her a bit as a judge, but I would miss it if she didn’t do at least a couple of pieces for the season, I must say.

  11. Go Matt G!

Anyone have a large view of David’s pics from the AMA afterparty?

  12. And I love that he was out having a good time at a hot party while a couple of some of his whacked out, unstable fans were completely cracking on Twitter last night.

I won’t even ask. Tis’ the season I suppose.

  13. I don’t claim to be Kris’ #1 fan, but I was disappointed that there was a need to throw him under the bus with Adam’s True Hollywood Story. They brought up the Arkansas “text gate” (even though that has never been substantiated). They even had Adam’s mom talking about Simon’s negative reaction to Kris winning. And Adam’s brother Neil saying they will never know what happened with the voting. And there was the quote from the LA Times of how Adam’s album is so much better than Kris’. Ricky Minor, Rolling Stones were all rallying around Adam.

The unfortunate thing is that they never included Kris in any of the present day interviews. The only hint of support for Kris was when Randy said “somehow Kris had gained momentum in the last 2 weeks” of the competition.

It’s been pretty obvious at the end of the AI summer tour that Kris began distancing himself from “Kradam”. Can’t blame him considering all the negativity he’s had to put up with.

  14. Danny must have had a good time at afterparties too; not sure which one it is but here is a glimpse of him dancing. That David Lehre is a show off, lol.

I didn’t watch the special, but that seems quite unclassy :(
I’m not a big Kris fan either, but he is a great guy, humble, talented and certainly doesn’t deserve that slant if that is how they put things. They could pump Adam up on their own if that is what they were going for, without trying to create “scandal” and drama. Was that show like someone’s personal blog, lol?

  15. Here ya go sma11ie

I think Getty has some pics too.

BTW I gotta say it bummed me out Lee had no presence the AMA’s. Not only do I think the networking would have been good for him but not seeing the current winner there in any form is just..weird.
    Even Taylor got to present!

  16. And I love that he was out having a good time at a hot party while a couple of some of his whacked out, unstable fans were completely cracking on Twitter last night. Good to see hes handling being “betrayed” so well and he wasnt actually tied up in a basement or something! *snort*

Trina, LMAO. I witnessed that crazy cray last night. I have to say it was really just two fans, one of which is known for this behavior. Of course all of us jumped in and started talking about their tweets and made it look worse than it really was LOL! Was David the only Idol (winner or runner up) to attend the AMAs? Have we heard of any other winners or high-profile runners-up there (other than Danny who presented)?

I don’t claim to be Kris’ #1 fan, but I was disappointed that there was a need to throw him under the bus with Adam’s True Hollywood Story.

I agree. While I liked the whole show and thought Adam seemed really sweet and genuine and I LOVE his parents, the producers really kind of pounded on Kris. Sure, you can call Kris’ win an upset, but E! really played up the “shock” and nearly took a position that Adam should have won. However, the sound bite from Adam was very classy – saying it worked out better this way because it enabled two successful artists to emerge. I’ve always felt that way about the Davids. In both seasons, the runners up were at one time the frontrunners and left the show with a ton of momentum and fans, enabling the franchise to launch two successful careers.

They really needed to go there again? And I’m surprised they got quotes from the mother and brother, since they both seem like classy people but I guess that’s what trashy editing do for you.

Not that it’s too surprising either, E! clearly wants controversy and drama so they used everything they could.

  18. I didn’t watch it Neil, but that’s just wrong. I’m no Kris fan either, but there’s no need for that indeed.

It’s been pretty obvious at the end of the AI summer tour that Kris began distancing himself from “Kradam”. Can’t blame him considering all the negativity he’s had to put up with.

I’ve always been ick about Kradam because right after the show it seemed like both Adam and Kris were trying too much to show they got along. I’m not saying they didn’t, but during the show had been all these rumors about them having problems with each other (which were most probably all false) and then the show ends and there’s a clearly attempt to show they’re BFF. And then zip, no more. Like, job done.

This may be the start of him getting back out into the PR seeking world. DC doesn’t go to stuff like that unless they make him. LOL

lol That was my first thought too. If I was a celeb I’d be all over these parties if I was invited, but DC usually doesn’t go, so it’s kinda surprising. Or maybe I’m just wishing something will happen soon (as in January)

That’s kind of sickening that they felt the need to throw Kris under the bus. I don’t see the need to throw Kris down to make Adam seem better. There is a space for both guys in the music industry and it definitely does make me happy that Kris has distanced himself from the Kradam thing, even though a completely classless person asked about Adam during his performance/interview segment at The Grove last week.

And in terms if his family, if they really said those things it’s classless. Anytime the Allen family has been asked about Adam they’ve been classy and full of compliments, with Katy Allen even saying that if Kris was not in the competition Adam would have been her favorite.

What has Kris ever done to the E! True Hollywood people that they feel the need to trash him like this a year and a half after the fact?

  20. Here ya go sma11ie
    http://twitpic.com/395fzt
I think Getty has some pics too.

Thanks Trina. I stalked @FoolsApril64 twitter and got some more links :). She even has a 7-second vid: http://www.twitvid.com/DNGVA. And MJ’s AMA live blog thread has a couple pics as well. Nice. He looked cute and happy. The necklace is fug though, lol.

However, the sound bite from Adam was very classy – saying it worked out better this way because it enabled two successful artists to emerge.

I really like Adam as a person, even if I only like some of his music. I would’ve been shocked, I mean SHOCKED if they got a meanspirited soundbite from Adam about Kris. And vice-versa. Kris and Adam themselves have always been so classy and nice to/about each other. I remember David’s little post-Permanent inteview with Ryan at the S9 finale, where he said these two guys are not only great performers, but they’re great guys, and that America couldn’t really get it wrong.

  21. To be fair, the editing on the Adam story was pretty wonky. Weren’t Neil and Eber already alluding to this possibly being a problem in a mini “tweet war” a few days ago (Neil threatening to sue for defamation, with Eber defending himself by saying they hadn’t included his full statement—it was pretty funny, but telling) The AI stuff was really pretty minor, and nothing new.

On another subject, does Beiber actually get radio play? I know he sells tons, but does radio play him. He is never played in Chicago (at least on the Mix, KISS, etc).

  22. On another subject, does Beiber actually get radio play? I know he sells tons, but does radio play him. He is never played in Chicago (at least on the Mix, KISS, etc).

NY – Z100 loves the Beibs (or at least they used to, don’t listen to them much anymore these days)

  23. So, you figure Cook out and about doin the movin and the shakin means a revvin up the PR machine for the new album cycle? Oh yeah, David definitely made some wardrobe upgrades recently. Well done, stylist person. Though I don’t think they picked out the jewelry last night. <3 <3 I bet he still has that plastic rose, too. God love him. As for the great betrayal or whatever it was supposed to be, if I don't actually see the cray cray, I can pretend it doesn't exist, right? Oy vey. And they probably wonder why David hasn't been tweeting much lately.

Speaking of cray cray, WTF, Mia Michaels? She wants to be a tv star, no she wants to be an artist, no she wants to be a tv star, no never mind, she’s can’t be an artist and a tv star… I am one of the few who will actually miss the Mia-isms, but not as much as her choreo.

  24. Was that show like someone’s personal blog, lol?

The E- True Hollywood story is a 1 hr biography on Adam that aired last night. Ironically, it’s on the same network ETV that Ryan Seacrest hosts the daily E news. They had family members, friends, co-workers talking about Adam. And it was obvious that the show was after the kill regarding Kris. As I said, they never even had the courtesy to include Kris in any of the current interviews.

  25. As I said, they never even had the courtesy to include Kris in any of the current interviews.

Honestly, after the hatchet job they did on Kris in the story, it’s better for him that he wasn’t in any of the interviews, because I can’t imagine how he would have felt if he has been interviewed and then it was part of the kill they set out for.

  26. On another subject, does Beiber actually get radio play? I know he sells tons, but does radio play him. He is never played in Chicago (at least on the Mix, KISS, etc).

I could be wrong, but I think his songs usually make the top 20 on CHR.

  27. What is RCA doing for Lee? I am not really a fan, but the guy’s album just dropped. Why would they not have him at the AMA’s to present? That is a given. And wouldn’t this have been a great time for him to be in NY networking?

  28. My local radio was ragging on the Biebs thing morning and the AMAs, calling him and the award a total joke. They thought any of the other nominated would have been a more worthy choice. I neither agree or disagree, just relaying what my local CHR radio said and they don’t play Bieber much, if any.

  29. This may be the start of him getting back out into the PR seeking world. DC doesn’t go to stuff like that unless they make him. LOL

LOL, true. But he looks so nice, I’m glad to get some pictures of him. Crumbs and all that :)

Twitter feed made my head hurt this morning, I had no idea what people were talking about and then to realize it was about a MWK pic that didn’t include David… well. Let’s put it this way: I am hibernating from the fandom for a reason. I can’t do the angst and the speculation. I do need to stay off Twitter feeds, though. I don’t know why I do it (except I did see that damn aifan33 person got poofed so THAT was good news).

  30. I am glad Kris wasn’t interviewed. The only two that didn’t come off as bitter was Adam himself and Randy. I also noticed Kris distancing himself from Adam the last month of the tour.

  31. Thrilled Miss Mia will be off my favorite show. She’s a mean, cruel, harpy and I don’t think these kids need the insults she’s constantly throwing.

Good to see Cookie out and about, and I’ll be ordering Crystal’s CD today – gotta get that bonus track.

  32. They did an article about the AMA’s that was really pretty much just a way to mention Adam, then stuck a random pic of Adam kissing Tommy in the gallery of pics, lol:

    It’s called “link bait”. ;).

  33. I don’t know why I do it (except I did see that damn aifan33 person got poofed so THAT was good news).

Yes, very good news, but she’s BAAAAACK under another name, lol.

It’s so good to hear that David was seen with Jimmy Kimmel’s booking agent. Might we see him on Jimmy’s show in 2011? I hope so. They seem to get along very well. Bring on 2011, I’m ready. :)

  34. I fail to see how any ” hatchet job” was done on Kris in Adams eths. Out of an hour long special only a few minutes were devoted to the ai results and/ or Kris. No one said he wasn’t talented or didn’t deserve to win. The focus was on the ” shocking” result. And for a lot of people – as reflected in the post finale media- it was shocking. Did anyone think adams close friends and family would be interviewed and say they were not surprised and that they didnt think he deserved to win? Lol again nothing negative was said about kris. All tbat was said was support for adam The only person who said anything that could be construed as negative about Kris was Ann powers the pop music critic for the La times. She has been a vocal Adam fan and supporter and preferred his album to kris’. That is her opinion. She is entitled. Nothing against Kris. And the fact is that Adams cd has outsold kris’ by a lot. It would be surprising if e didn’t mention that. But Kris was hardly thrown under the bus by e. The show was about Adam. It wasn’t about kris

Kris Allen talks about music and touring (Exclusive Interview) Part 1 http://exm.nr/9RAOx9

Oh, I’ve been waiting for this! Interesting about ‘Before We Come Undone’. Acoustic and maybe another video for it?

  36. The stupidity of it all is amazing. To add to the mini meltdown there was also some angst because someone tweeted that her uncle was singing backround for DC today. That led to(at least on my feed) some angst from Andy fans all “WTF is someone else singing and not Andy?!!? NOOOOO!” !!!1!!!! As for the MWK photoshoot,I hate to break it to these nuts, but David is a solo artist signed to a major label. Can you just see RCA letting him take part in a photoshoot for an unsigned band? Its fine they let him perform in a couple MWK shows but IMO no way will they let him actively be a part of a band where hes not even the lead singer.

It’s so good to hear that David was seen with Jimmy Kimmel’s booking agent. Might we see him on Jimmy’s show in 2011?

Wasnt is said that he and Jimmy have golfed together before? Or am I hallucinating this?

  37. I’m a passionate (one might say obsessed) Adam fan, and I agree with those who say the True Hollywood Story’s treatment of Kris was disrespectful and IMO, so not necessary. I thought it was fine to include Adam’s friends and their supportive WTF! comments, but I’m very sorry that they included footage of Adam’s mother Leila and brother Neil (and, for that matter, anyone who knows both Kris and Adam) saying negative things about Kris’ win. I’m glad (and not surprised)that Adam’s comments continue to be both gracious and respectful. Wish that his mother, in particular, had followed his lead. Although I primarily blame the editors for including her comment about Simon. As a mother, I’m sure that I might have put my foot in my mouth were I in a similar situation.

Other than that, except for a few factual inaccuracies and the painful reliving of the AMA ninja roll (presented without comment!), I thought it was a really wonderful portrait of Adam as a person and as an artist.

  38. With all due respect, when you actually watch the E! THS instead of commenting on it secondhand from someone else, the editing cuts in Adam’s family interviews are pretty blatant. Leila doesn’t sound like she’s actually answering a question, it sounds like someone has taken a sentence from a longer description of her impressions of that moment. And they actually cut Neil off in the middle of a sentence while he was still talking. I think they do some pretty creative editing to get the storyline they’re going for.

And yes, according to his tweets, Eber apparently said much more about the whole dynamic between Adam & Neil before the comment about him potentially tormenting Adam about being gay, which made Neil sound like an asshole of a kid without those caveats.

But no editing could budge Adam from his relentlessly positive take on his loss and support of Kris as the winner. And Kris has been distancing himself from Adam since the AMAs, up until then he would occasionally voluntarily bring up Adam himself. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t at the direction of his management and label, no one knew what the result of the backlash from that night would be back then.

  39. Was David the only Idol (winner or runner up) to attend the AMAs? Have we heard of any other winners or high-profile runners-up there (other than Danny who presented)?

Danny didn’t present; he was a red carpet host at the pre-show, interviewing celebs. He also attended the ceremony and after parties.
I was really surprised Lee did not present; I thought that was tradition!

The E- True Hollywood story is a 1 hr biography on Adam that aired last night.

Yeah, I know; I was just comparing it to a personal blog because it sounds like that sort of thing, vs a true journalistic piece. But to be honest I did not watch it so can’t give a first hand opinion.

  40. Crystal’s shooting the video today for her 1st single, Farmer’s Daughter. Can’t wait to see it…hope it has a stripped down look & feel with minimum production.

@crystalbowersox Goodmornin’! Shooting a little music video for a song called farmers daughter today…. ;)

  41. LOL, it is E-True Hollywood Story. It is not meant to be a “true journalistic piece.” And it was Adam’s story. The only person who may have come-off in a negative light was Ann Powers. And her statements were subjected to the same editing as everyone else’s, so who knows all that she may have said.

And, goodness, both Adam and Kris were “distancing themselves” from everyone at the end of the tour. They were killing themselves to get albums out by fall. Adam (and I assume Kris) was on a plane back to LA or NY every free minute.

  42. What has Kris ever done to the E! True Hollywood people that they feel the need to trash him like this a year and a half after the fact?

Well, I guess E! True hollywood couldn’t find enough interesting stuff to talk about Adam for the entire hr show and so they used Kris and beat him up to make up the hour. I want to know how Adam feel after seeing that… My gut feeling and hope that he is not feeling too happy about the completed show..

  43. With all due respect, when you actually watch the E! THS instead of commenting on it secondhand from someone else, the editing cuts from Adam’s family are pretty blatant. Leila doesn’t sound like she’s actually answering a question, it sounds like someone has taken a sentence from a longer description of her impressions of that moment. I just think there was no need for E!THS to even include the whole cut down on Kris in any way shape or form, whether it was from blatant editing cuts or anything else. It comes off as petty and spiteful that there was a need to edit in such a way as to cut down another artist who at this point in time has nothing to do with Adam’s career trajectory. The outcome of Idol was releant a year ago, maybe, after their respective albums dropped. A year later, both guys are working on their own careers and the only commonality between them is that they were on the same season of AI and they are both managed by 19M. There was no need to rehash something that isn’t relevant and then manage to paint Kris in an unflattering light based on editing cuts.

  44. Well, I guess E! True hollywood couldn’t find enough interesting stuff to talk about Adam for the entire hr show and so they used Kris and beat him up to make up the hour.

LOL yeah I’m sure that was it.

  45. There was no need to rehash something that isn’t relevant and then manage to paint Kris in an unflattering light based on editing cuts.

I agree, but I think it’s unfair to blame Adam or his family for the work of the E! editing producers.

Oh, now I’m sad :( I had my DVR all set and I was just about to watch this. I’m glad I checked this blog first. I will just go ahead and delete it now. I guess I should have expected this but I was hoping that they could have left Kris out of it. At least Adam took the high road :)

  47. I did watch the E show on Adam. I have nothing against Adam, but in Kris’ defense, I have to agree: Bitterness and pounding are pretty accurate descriptives. There was definitely an overwhelming bias against Kris. My reaction was that anyone not that familiar with American Idol would not come away from the E show with a very positive impression of Kris.

Maybe Kris won because people liked him better or preferred his type of music over Adam’s. But of course none of that was ever alluded too. And the focus was more around the controversy with voting.

  48. Oh, I’ve been waiting for this! Interesting about ‘Before We Come Undone’. Acoustic and maybe another video for it?

I am so excited about this. That is probably (although it is hard to choose)my favorite song of of Kris’s album and since he NEVER plays it live anymore I was afraid that it would be forever shunned. I can’t wait for this version :)

  50. I feel it was classless of eTHS to basically throw Kris under the bus, instead of just focus on Adam’s success.

  51. I don’t think it was a “shocker” at all that Kris won. Adam himself said he knew he lost as soon as Danny went out in third. Why in the world would it be such a shocker? Voters kept both of them up there for weeks. Judges don’t always dictate votes.

I think its been established that the winner doesn’t always sell the most- AI is more than picking the one that most people will buy music from.

The show played the “shock” up for media attention. And E played it up for sensationalism, from the sounds of it-maybe I will actually have to watch the show now to get my own take on it, lol.

  52. And in terms if his family, if they really said those things it’s classless. Anytime the Allen family has been asked about Adam they’ve been classy and full of compliments, with Katy Allen even saying that if Kris was not in the competition Adam would have been her favorite.

I don’t really think it’s fair to judge the family off the soundbites. It’s pretty obvious that the editors snipped the conversations to fit what they wanted, which was to hype the scandal and sensationalize the whole thing. Isn’t that the point of those shows, to make more out of situations than there really is for ratings?

I mean, it was easy enough to see that Neil was dismissive of the whole “conspiracy” concept, but they took two conversations and put them side by side to seem like he was hinting that there was something to it.

  53. I don’t think it was a “shocker” at all that Kris won. Adam himself said he knew he lost as soon as Danny went out in third. Why in the world would it be such a shocker?

I think the “shocking” aspect comes more from the fact that the media, etc had heralded Adam as the more all around triumphant singer, performer, etc. And he certainly got a lot of media attention. But you’re right, I do remember Adam saying several times that once Danny left the competition, Adam knew he wasn’t going to win.

  54. Well… uhh… I like both Adam and Kris, so I have no horse in this race. The only comment I thought was negative was the woman who said Adam’s album was so much better than Kris’. The rest just came off like they were just reporting the whole “shocking loss” thing. And it was a shock for a lot of people, Adam was expected to win. I thought Adam and a few of the others blatantly mocked the conspiracy theory stuff, and Adam himself clearly could not care less that he lost. I didn’t feel that The E people had anything against Kris per se. It seems more like they were setting up an “inevitable rise to the top” story arc, and that the AI loss was the typical “setback” they always have in these shows.

SO ANYWAY…. I’m still on the fence about Crystal and Farmers Daughter, but just a little. Love the song, think its absolutely the right move for her to have written her lead single… I just wish it was a different song because I can’t imagine HAC playing it much. Unless there is just nothing else with potential for AAA and HAC airplay.

I don’t know what is going on with Lee. I think he was out promoting a lot this past week, though I was surprised he did not at least walk the red carpet at the AMAs. They do seem to be promoting him though. I think we need to see what they have planned for the holidays.

  55. My point on the E!THS is that the producers could have done this great portrait on Adam without bashing Kris at all. It’s out of the hands of Adam, his family or friends how the producers edit the show, so there’s no reason to blame them. And it was only a small part of the program. But it would have been nice if the producers hadn’t felt they needed to present Kris as some kind of loser who had no business winning.

To me, it’s not a huge deal because no one will remember what was said on this show once E! stops airing it. But it still bothered me a little because I don’t like cheap shots and that’s basically what the producers did here.

  56. Ann Powers did not say Adam’s album was better. She said it was “doing better” and she is a music reviewer so I see nothing weird about her saying that. If Eber or Lee or Neil had said it, it would be weird. But a music critic with the LA Times, not strange at all to me.
But THS aside, this just makes my day!!!! :)

Ratings Sunday: Eagles Fly for NBC; American Music Awards Hits Lows

The American Music Awards averaged a 4.3 rating with adults 18-49 between 8p-11p, down 22% from 2009?s 5.5 preliminary rating. Though 2009 pulled the best 18-49 numbers since 2004, last night’s ratings were also down vs. 2008?s 5.1 rating with adults 18-49. It was the American Music Awards lowest-rated telecast ever with adults 18-49.

  57. That L.A. Examiner article on Kris is so poorly written that it is unclear exactly what Kris was telling the reporter. Acoustic BWCU release? Next album possibly released by the Spring? Yeah…not sure I can take any of that article seriously. It would be great if these things are true, but because the whole article is a big fat mess in terms of grammar and sentence structure and the reporter seems totally confused, it’s hard for me to believe it. Hopefully someone else will ask Kris about these things so it will be cleared up

I would love to think that it had to do with all the Idols that performed, presented last year, but somehow I think it mostly had to do with Lady GaGa performing ;)

I just heard on Twitter that Lee will be doing a Free concert at Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago.
I wonder if he will require a CD purchase to get in. That would be a wise thing to do.
I still remember freezing my a** off in line for 9 hours in March waiting to get into Danny’s CD release party at Turner Hall.

  59. That L.A. Examiner article on Kris is so poorly written that it is unclear exactly what Kris was telling the reporter.

That article is a good example why Examiner and Associated Content should not be taken with a boatload of salt.

  60. That L.A. Examiner article on Kris is so poorly written that it is unclear exactly what Kris was telling the reporter.

That article is just a disaster in terms of writing. Did you know that Arkansas is a town, and not a state? Because you know, that line about Kris and Katy being back in their hometown of Arkansas was just a great statement.

  61. I would love that it had to do with all the Idols that performed, presented last year, but somehow I think it mostly had to do with Lady GaGa performing ;)

Also, I don’t remember exactly what game was on last year but yesterday Eagles vs Giants was a big ratings draw:

Sunday Night Football scored its fourth best overnight rating ever, and that was more than enough to lead NBC to victory on Sunday night.

  62. I chalk the lower AMA ratings to (in order of importance) A) fewer bigger names at the AMAs this year, B) no country acts unless you count Taylor Swift who’s at least as if not more pop, C) football, D) no Gaga, and I think not tapping the AI audience had a negative impact too.

Valentin432: Last year’s Sunday Night Football game against the AMAs was the Eagles against the Bears which isn’t a divisional matchup but it’s still 2 big football markets. That one scored a 6.6 in the 18-49 demo: link

Look at last year’s AMA lineup: Janet, Shakira, Keith Urban, Green Day, Jay-Z/Alicia Keys, BEP, Rihanna, Gaga, Mary J Blige, J-lo, Whitney, Eminem/50 Cent, Timbaland/Nelly Furtado plus the 3 most successful Idols (Daughtry, Carrie, and Kelly) and Adam who’d been on the most recent AI season.

This year’s lineup also had Rihanna and BEP but the rest were Enrique Iglesias, Diddy, Justin Bieber, Usher, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Kid Rock, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Carlos Santana, Ne-Yo, Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi, and P!nk plus the NKOTB/BSB.

IMO the star wattage and the sales power just didn’t compare.

  63. Reminder:

The next step is to close this thread for good. Stop the fan war now, please.

  64. I think E! should’ve edited Ann Powers’ comment out. They edited everything else.

Yes it was a big game, but this one was Vick vs Manning lol! It scored over 8.0 rating apparently.

But you’re probably right that the program wasn’t as attractive, Bieber is a big ratings draw but mostly for the under 18 crowd.

  66. I’m confused… Are people hearing Ann Powers’ comment wrongly? Mishearing – is there such a word?

Doesn’t she say “The fact that Adam’s album DID so much better than Kris’…” (after they show the BB chart)? I don’t hear her saying “…IS so much better”. Is that the comment people are referring to?

This one was also not only same conference, but same division with first place in the division on the line. And NY is a much bigger market to go after then Chicago.

Well I believe that comment was unnecessary and didn’t have to be added to the show, and it showed a lack of class and bitterness on her part.

  69. Well I believe that comment was unnecessary and didn’t have to be added to the show, and it showed a lack of class on her part.

I’m not saying anything about including it but I’m just wondering what people are hearing. What did you hear? I mean there is a difference.

  70. But didn’t that football game only affect one (maybe 2) time zones? And I’m not sure the same people who would be watching that game are the same demographic watching the AMAs.

I’m not saying anything about including it but I’m just wondering what people are hearing. What did you hear? I mean there is a difference.

You’re right, kidding. She said, “did better” not “is better.” Since she is a pop music critic for a major US newspaper, I see nothng wrong with her comment, especially considering that during that segment, E! was talking about Adam’s success.

  72. I’m not saying anything about including it but I’m just wondering what people are hearing. What did you hear? I mean there is a difference.

    I heard the same

“The fact that Adam’s album DID so much better than Kris’…”

In the segment that they used it they made her appear that she was bitter and had lack of class. Now it could’ve been the editing by E!, but if it wasn’t it showed that she was bitter and still held a grudge. It could’ve been the editing by E!, but that is how it appeared on the show.

Many people on twitter thought the same and re-tweeted the quote.

  73. Well I believe that comment was unnecessary and didn’t have to be added to the show, and it showed a lack of class and bitterness on her part.

Does Ann Powers have a horse in this race enough to be bitter? Also, if she said that Adam’s album was doing much better in the charts, isn’t that just a statement of fact. And if she thinks Adam’s album is better than Kris’, isn’t that kind of within her purview as a music critic. Or is she not allowed to do that if Idols are involved?

  74. ^^^ Read my post above

    :)

If you watched the show E!, you can see that they put that in the context of Adam’s loss.

Now either they edited it heavily or she was a bitter and held a grudge. That simple.

  75. But didn’t that football game only affect one (maybe 2) time zones? And I’m not sure the same people who would be watching that game are the same demographic watching the AMAs.

As I understand it, the over 8.0 ratings is for the country as a whole, it impacted all areas but particularly NY and Phily.
As for wheter people who watch football were likely to watch the AMA’s instead, that’s debatable, but it’s reasonable to think it impacted at least a little.

As far as performers impact, I think Windmills hit the nail on the head, this year was a lot of pop and not much else. There weren’t big country stars, the two biggest rappers either or the AI alumnis.

  76. Now it could’ve been the editing by E!, but if it wasn’t it showed that she was bitter and still held a grudge.

Ok.. I don’t have an issue with anyone thinking that this was something she shouldn’t have said. Thats fine, but why in heaven’s name would she be bitter. Its not like she is relate or friend of Adam’s. There are lots of different emotions I could think of that would fit better, disappointed, shocked, bewildered, let down and unsatisfied, however I just don’t know why she would be bitter. That would insinuate that she was at one point angry about the outcome. I just don’t know why she would care that much about either Adam or Kris to be that emotionally involved.

  77. Thanks! English is not my native language so I started to doubt my ears after reading some comments here.

  78. Valentin432: Yes it was a big game, but this one was Vick vs Manning lol! It scored over 8.0 rating apparently.

But you’re probably right that the program wasn’t as attractive, Bieber is a big ratings draw but mostly for the under 18 crowd.

WOW at the 8.0 rating! You’re definitely onto something about Vick vs Manning plus it was for 1st place in the NFC East. EDIT: Buffynut that would definitely be a national rating. The ratings in the local markets would be even higher than that.

I think another problem the AMAs ran up against is their performance list was basically the Teen Choice Awards with a couple rock veterans thrown in there, and most of the people performing are radio acts you really don’t want to hear live. They stacked the deck with acts with under 18 appeal and then brought in a few who had over 35 appeal but they didn’t have enough to appeal to the people in between.

  79. There are lots of different emotions I could think of that would fit better, disappointed, shocked, bewildered, let down and unsatisfied, however I just don’t know why she would be bitter.

lol…in the context that E! had on the show, they talked about Adam’s loss and then right after that they had Ann Powers comment. Which to people who were watching made her appear to be bitter about his loss to bring Kris up.

She could’ve said “Adam is doing really great after he didn’t win” or something to that effect, but either she or E! editing made it appear like she was classless.

  80. Just saw this press release about Archie performing at the Dallas Childrens Hospital. The interesting thing to me was this in the press release:

For more information about the Children’s Medical Center Holiday Parade, including route information and downloadable photos, visit http://www.childrens.com/parade. For inquiries regarding David Archuleta, please contact Gina Orr, gina.orr@gmail.com.

I’m confused. I thought Archie was managed by someone else?? Didn’t he sign a contract with WEG or something like that and there was some other woman mentioned?? Gina Orr is the woman who left 19M to open her own firm and is managing Crystal according to her tweets. Did Archie change management or what is going on??

    http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/david-archuleta-to-perform-in-holiday-parade-and-concert-benefiting-childrens-medical-center-109892414.html

  81. Why would the music critic Ann Powers be bitter…she liked Kris and wrote many complimentary things about him during S8. She actually said that she thought Kris could win. It is a fact, not a controversial opinion, that the runner up on S8 sold more albums than the winner.

  82. lol…let me repeat that again. I know it seems hard to understand, but

The way E! edited that segment it made her appear to be classless and still held a grudge.

I believe that is what many people were discussing. My 1st post clearly states that E! should have edited, but choose to add it and placed it right after they talked about Adam’s coming in 2nd place. Making her appear to be classless or holding a grudge.

If you are a SMART critic and not clueless, you would clearly say “Even though Adam didn’t win he is really doing well”…and not compare him to other people.

  83. As far as performers impact, I think Windmills hit the nail on the head, this year was a lot of pop and not much else. There weren’t big country stars, the two biggest rappers either or the AI alumnis.

Ditto. The AMAs is supposed to be about the top selling, most popular, most buzzed about acts from all genres. This year they dropped the ball by putting all their eggs in one basket. Fail.

  84. I thought it rather ironic that the genres that were least represented, had the best LIVE performances on the show. Just sayin’. ;)

  85. Does anyone have the ratings for THS? Did Adam’s do better than other first-run episodes of the series?

I think you nailed it. Besides Bon Jovi and Carlos Santana, this year’s AMA lineup was like the mother of all Jingle Balls- it was very much a top-40 line-up, and skewed mostly towards the youngest demo- and like you said, a lot of these guys are not good live. The 90s boy band comeback hype was cute, and may have nabbed some more late-20s viewers who are nostalgic about music they grew up with, but it wasn’t enough.

  87. But the E Hollywood True Story series are known for it’s sensationalism and drama. It’s definitely more on the tabloid gossipy side. I don’t think they outright lied. But they left things open for interpretation. And it’s obvious they slanted the segment towards a certain direction to get a certain reaction.

  88. Raises hand-I didn’t bother to watch the AMAs this year because none of my favorite Idols were presenting or performing. I’m sure I’m not the only viewer who felt this way.
Last year I specifically made a point to watch because of Adam. I’m sure there were enough Adam fans and people curious to see what he would do to affect the ratings to some degree.

  89. Kei$ha was lip-syncing terribly during the AMA show.

And who wasn’t ? (With the exception of Pink ) ?
Ups, I forgot about all off-key acts..

  90. Last year I specifically made a point to watch because of Adam. I’m sure there were enough Adam fans and people curious to see what he would do to affect the ratings to some degree.

I think last year was more about the Lady GaGa curiosity factor then the Adam thing. JMHO.

  91. what a clasless moron the person who made tha E!Hollywood story on Adam; hate to see them involving Kris with such unflattering comments

  92. this year’s AMA lineup was like the mother of all Jingle Balls- it was very much a top-40 line-

So true. I think the line up lacked variety. Rihanna, Ke$ha and Katy together was too much of the same thing. Next year SuBo FTW. ;)

ETHS is a tabloid show. It’s not exactly 60 Minutes so I doubt most folks take it seriously. I can see people being annoyed though if it spreads misinformation like it was fact.

  93. Brad Paisley cohosted Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton this weekend and he made some great comments about how much Carrie means to him, and mentioned others among his peers too. I don’t have a cap of that yet but I’m hoping somebody got one.

They did put up a few clips of Brad on the Country Countdown USA and in this one he mentioned that the idea of him singing Lady Gaga songs to Lady Antebellum during the CMA Awards opening monologue was Carrie’s idea. I loved that joke! Brad nailed it too. I love getting little inside glimpses like this too.

Brad’s a really gracious guy and truly one of the best ambassadors country music’s got. I’m so happy he’s finally CMA Entertainer Of The Year.

  94. And who wasn’t ? (With the exception of Pink ) ?
Ups, I forgot about all off-key acts..

When Justin Bieber was singing his song Pray his voice cracked really hard about a minute into the song. I think his voice is changing.

Miley had the same problem, Katy Perry was too high for the first part of the song.

Everyone on Idol could sing better than most of those people.

  95. I was watching yesterday E!THS with some uninvolved peeps. Whatever was said about Kris went totally unnoticed, seriously. Not a one comment. Nada, zero, zilch…

  96. I think its been Katy Perry’s turn to perform at EVERYSINGLE awards show possible. Like Gaga last year.

  97. I thought it rather ironic that the genres that were least represented, had the best LIVE performances on the show. Just sayin’.

Well, my father is a huge Santana fan, but that performance was a hot mess. Rock acts can screw up too.

  98. I think its been Katy Perry’s turn to perform at EVERYSINGLE awards show possible. Like Gaga last year.

Oh geesh. But Gaga can sing and does crazy stuff on stage. Katy not only can’t sing, but has a current single that requires her to basically scream the chorus at us. Why god, why? **weeps**

  99. Why god, why? **weeps**

    HAHAHAHAHA

  104. I am on the team that thinks E! didn’t have a goal of screwing Kris.

People in the Idol bubble forget that in the real world “fairness” doesn’t play into how the Idols are covered post-show.

No comprehensive examination of Adam’s life and career would be complete without mentioning that he was a surprise runner-up on American Idol. The great majority seemed to think Adam had the competition sewn up – that’s a fact. And his album sold better than Kris’ – that’s also a fact.

I don’t think that E! was going after Kris so much as telling Adam’s story objectively. It is what it is.

  105. Apparently from beyond the grave….

I wondered if he turned over. ;)

  106. I hope DEREK wins!! :) OMG, Its tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Squee!!!

Nor do they really give a cr@p.

    Cute! I loved that joke.

America wants to find out what other projectiles can be launched from her chest.

LOL, yes! KP’s songs are catchy and she’s hot, but her voice is not good. I find Lady Gaga’s voice to be grating as well, but at least she knows how to use it. KP doesn’t seem to, at all. I read some interview where she talked about doing an acoustic/stripped down album sometime in the future when she’s barefoot and pregnant… and all I could say was… stick with what works, girl. No one wants to hear your voice front and center without the catchy chorus, over-processing and mega-production. Or watch your videos when you’re not the hot girl anymore. I hear Avril Lavigne is having a hard time getting RCA to get behind her new album, which is a lot of acoustic focus-on-the-voice stuff… and Avril can actually sing. But she’s got an image problem now too, since she’s not the teen-punk anymore, but no one wants to market her as a “serious artist”.

  109. Last year I specifically made a point to watch because of Adam. I’m sure there were enough Adam fans and people curious to see what he would do to affect the ratings to some degree.

I disagree. It’s not always about Adam. And if there was any AMA Idol impact, it would have to do more with Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, who have all made much bigger impacts in the marketplace than Adam Lambert.

And well deserved kudos goes out to Carrie Underwood for winning Best Country album for Play On.

  110. Hmm, I watched the THS last night too, and I just didn’t get the impression that anyone was bashing Kris. Maybe I need to watch it again? It seemed like people were just talking about what happened. Adam’s brother’s tone of voice when speaking of the conspiracy theories, to me, seemed like he found them all kind of ridiculous.

I don’t know – maybe I’m wrong. I expected Adam’s friends and family to say that they were surprised he lost. So, I guess it didn’t strike me as a dig against Kris.

Yay to Mia leaving the judge’s panel on SYTYCD. She’s so negative and mean, I always want to punch her.

I’ve never watched the AMA’s in the history of the show. Clearly, I’m not missing much :).

  112. watching christina aguilera sing up there, after witnessing rihanna katy, and then, aftwards, kesha, just reminds me how talented she is. id rather have someone oversing then not be able to sing at all.

  113. koshka made me giggle. LOL

I’ve never watched the AMA’s in the history of the show. Clearly, I’m not missing much

    Not at all. :D

  114. Katy already has an Unplugged album on itunes.

I just saw something on Twitter about Avril’s new album, that it explores a lot of hip hop influences. Did she submit to the collab route like everyone else too? grrr…

  115. I’ve never watched the AMA’s in the history of the show. Clearly, I’m not missing much

    Not at all.

But Nigel is hellbent on S10’s new Idols being able to pull off an “awards show-style performance”. A lot of last night’s AMA performances, had they shown up on Idol, would’ve been considered to be trainwrecks… heh. Just a thought. But to be fair, there are a lot of awards show performances that are fantastic.

Katy already has an Unplugged album on itunes.

    How is it?

Avril’s album has changed dates and direction so many times fans have whiplash. Who knows what it’ll sound like when it finally drops… whenever it drops.

  116. Ahhhh I wish Kris would play more in New England…especially if he’s doing the jingle balls with HEDLEY in the line up! (They’re a band from Canadian Idol Season 2 that has done SUPER awesome in Canada, and is now trying to do well in the US as well)

  117. How is it?

I have this on my ipod, the MTV Unplugged. I actually think stripping back makes her voice sound better. She can’t belt out a big chorus song, like Firework. She resorts to yelling to try and reach the notes, it’s too ambitious. But songs like ‘Hackensack’, she has interesting phrasing. I actually think her voice has gotten worse or at the least sounds worse on the new songs she wrote for this era, the needs to know her limits. Thinking of You is good too.

ETA: Rihanna’s ‘California King Bed’ is begging for a great power singer. She does ok with it, but it’s a bit shouty too.

  118. I disagree. It’s not always about Adam. And if there was any AMA Idol impact, it would have to do more with Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, who have all made much bigger impacts in the marketplace than Adam Lambert.

But the AMA’s last year was all about Adam, before, during and after. Talk all you like about the marketplace impact of Daughtry, Adam drove the pre show publicity, was hyped all through the show and was the one everybody spoke about after. Hell there could even be an argument that viewership was down because so many people were horrified over last years show (no making that argument, just saying there could be one).

It isn’t always about Adam you are right, but it isn’t always about which idol has had the most historical impact either.

Oh btw, I’m team ‘how the hell are they going to have a THS about Adam Lambert and NOT discuss the shock of the idol final?’. It’s not all about kris either. Nobody was trying to throw poor kris under any bus, his shock win is simply part of Adam’s story.

  119. Thanks for posting the AMA vids MJ. I did watch it live- they didn’t record the whole content of all interviews :( Danny was pretty funny when he was talking with Joey McIntyre-asked if he could join the band.

Another pic with his cohosts Agnes Monica from Indonesia and Stuart Brazell:

Everyone on Idol could sing better than most of those people.

    ITA.

Congrats to Carrie for Play on album of the year-country.

    Happy Brad Paisley won!

  120. Michael Sarver’s label decided not to release his Christmas album (which was supposed to come out tomorrow)

    michaelsarver1 Michael Sarver

Hey guys. Our release day for the Christmas Album has ran into trouble. My label decided to not release it so I’m working my butt off to deliver what I promised to my fans. We will release the Christmas Album but it does not come out this tomorrow like it was planned.

  122. But the AMA’s last year was all about Adam, before, during and after.

I wonder if this played any role on more established, successful and big name acts not showing up this year. Putting the focus on someone who had not even released any music shines a spotlight on what the AMA are about, and how people should view them.

  123. New article from LAtimes mentioning David Cook’s presence at last night’s AMA afterparty.

Music heavyweights hit Hollywood venues Sunday to get down after the ceremony, with the most anticipated soiree the grand opening of the Rolling Stone restaurant and lounge at the Hollywood and Highland complex.

John Legend, Kid Rock, Ke$ha, Matthew Morrison and newlyweds Katy Perry and Russell Brand joined publisher Jann Wenner to christen the brand’s flagship event space.

Morrison was in good spirits, mingling with the likes of “American Idol” winner David Cook.

I’m totally giggling at the idea of Mr. Schue hanging out with David. I’d honestly be shocked to find out David watches Glee– just does not compute- I mean, I watch it, but it doesn’t seem his thing. Then again, I tend to forget that David was a musical theater geek in high school and apparently a big Andrew Lloyd Webber fanboy (at least enough to buy his latest albums). I’m still betting he’s more aware of the show, as a media junkie, than an avid watcher…

The performers this year had nothing to do with Adam and any focus on a debut artist. It had everything to do- as it does every year- with who is dropping new albums and singles. Last year Kelly Carrie daughtry gaga et al all had new albums or singles to promote. Who performed this year? Rihanna pink Katy bon jovi kid Rock Kesha Taylor etc. All with new albums or singles to promote

So your saying that the big superstars stayed away because of Adam’s appearance a year ago. I can’t see Gaga, Eminem and others, not attending the show unless they had something better to do. How would a new artist upset these megastars so much, that they would decide to forgo a chance to sell more albums. I never realized that Adam had that much power.

  126. But the AMA’s last year was all about Adam, before, during and after.

Maybe after, lol, but I think “all about Adam before and during” only pertains to Idol Bubble world.

That does seem to be the case. If I was a Lee fan, I would be ticked off they didn’t get him included in some capacity.

Another picture of Danny post AMA ceremony. He is going to miss his new international pop star friends I think.

  127. Awww poor Sarver. Not a fan of his music, but he kinda grew on me during the Idol tour..

    MichaelSarver:

I apologize to you all for the sloppy and unprofessional way this has been handled. Im on my own for this record so it’s taking a lot to about 1 hour ago via Echofon

    # get it done. But I promise you will get it if I have to give it away for free. I will not let you guys down!!!!!!!! about 1 hour ago via Echofon

  128. someone needed to take that pen away from Lee in his interview lol

No kidding. This thing starts looking like a weapon in his hands.

When the interviewer assumes that Lee must be excited about the album, Lee’s response is pretty much the opposite of ‘excited’. But he smiles!

  129. Wow. IDK which is Michael Sarver’s Label – but he’s not shy about giving his opinion of them – “sloppy and unprofessional”. Not any sort of a fan, but that’s a shame for him. Hope he finds a way to make it work.

I’m totally giggling at the idea of Mr. Schue hanging out with David.

Smallie – WTF!Cook may have had a lot to talk to Mr. Schue about – you never know. ;)

I saw a tweet from someone who was there – the “VIP afterparty.” Upstairs room w/patio only holds 180 peeps & David Cook is 1 of that limited group. #impressed

Being at the limited VIP AfterParty at ‘the Place to Be’ last night likely afforded David some other people to meet also – interesting to see if anything comes of it, other than a fun evening, and a chance to say hello again to Bon Jovi.

Dream Records, a mostly Christian label based out of the LA Dream Center, with ties to Universal Music Group. Not sure whether there were other issues with the label, but it can’t have helped that so few copies sold of Michael’s country album.

  131. what a clasless moron the person who made tha E!Hollywood story on Adam; hate to see them involving Kris with such unflattering comments

??? These aren’t folks here politely ignoring the elephant in the room so as not to run afoul of posting rules. These are folks telling Adam’s story, which happens to include getting beat by Kris Allen in a SHOCK! finale and then outselling him by over double in album sales and touring. You’d have them ignore the actual facts in order to flatter Kris???

The only thing that surprised me was that Ann Powers (of the LA Times) was the one voicing the comments about Adam’s CD being so much better than Kris’s (and selling so.) Now, that did surprise me. But, that she was the one saying it probably explains why it made the edit.

  132. Girlygirl-
I don’t know who Captain Ken is or anything about his blog, but that reads like a poor review of Lee, David Cook and Kris-what does this guy have against WGWGs? He says it looks like DC & Kris’s careers are dead.
At least he likes Lee and a few of his songs.

another poor review for Lee’s album

    http://blogs.capecodonline.com/cape-cod-music/2010/11/22/rihanna-goes-back-to-being-bad-in-a-very-good-way-while-lee-dewyze-may-not-live-down-live-it-up/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+cape-cod-music+%28Capt.+Ken%27s+Music+Musings%3A+Music+Reviews+and+News%29

Hmmm, not sure I’d hold up a blog as “another poor review.” The blogger likes Lee but not the types of albums Idols produce post-idol. And the blogger doesn’t like Kris Allen or David Cook. Now David has done very, very well for himself. Kris, not so much. But to lump them all together is just lazy and doesn’t give this blogger much credibility. I think I’ll stick with real reviews. Anybody can write stuff like this:

Still this falls in the tradition of so many debuts by “Idol” winners that came before DeWyze including Taylor Hicks, David Cook, Fantasia, and Kris Allen. The personalities of the artists—and I use that term loosely for some on that list—simply have been scrubbed away. This problem killed Hicks’ career and it looks to have done the same to Allen and Cook.

  134. Maybe after, lol, but I think “all about Adam before and during” only pertains to Idol Bubble world.

Oh, I dunno. He got heaps of “outside the bubble” publicity before the show. There were videos of him auditioning dancers, bts at rehearsals, etc. He was featured on ET, Access Hollywood, Extra, et al. Plus, of course, he was one of the people making the nomination announcements, along with Paula Abdul and Snoop Dog, which also got quite a bit of coverage.

During the show, his “shocking” upcoming performance was hyped to the heavens, at every commercial break.

So, in other words, I’m thinking the AMA producers did think he would be a draw.

  135. Wow, Ken sure didn’t hold back with his opinion of Lee and the previous Idol winners. I haven’t listened to Lee’s album and truthfully I can’t even motivate myself to even try. I will agree with him on one point, there’s been a few Idol winners who’s personality was completely missing in their debut albums. But I have to disagree with him about Cook, I saw several facets of David’s personality in his album. I certainly looking forward to his sophomore effort.

For nine seasons the main complaint against 19 and Sony is that the debut albums lack everything that makes the idols special, and all the elements that they showed during the season that lead to them winning. I think that has changed a little bit since they’ve let the alums take a part in writing their songs. For me, Fantasia’s current album is the only one where she sounds like the Fantasia who was on AI, and while I think some of Lee’s pre-idol stuff is better than what is on his current cd, I do think that Live It Up comes closer to his sound than almost any other alums debut album did.

  137. I agree that Fantasia’s latest album reminded me of the Fantasia I saw on the show. I bought this one and I love it. Her debut album was so bland and generic, that it was very disappointing.

Yeah, I think this review was biased against this type of performer, and not factual. I’m not sure why it was necessary to bring other idols into the review.

And I definately think Lee, Kris, and especially David put a lot of their personalities and musical styles in their albums. They all have a distict sound to me.

I do think Kris has been somewhat successful, because he did have the platinum single, and he is still touring, and opening for major acts.

  139. From that blog review:

The songs are generic strum and vocal love songs that you can hear in any coffeehouse on a Tuesday night.

Sorry, but this is exactly the way I have seen Lee since his first day on Idol.

  140. Ahhhh captain Ken :) I agree with almost all his points. His comments are right in line with comments posted here time and time again. Heck he could even be a fellow poster. Lol the best part is that he is “supposed” to review crystal’s cd next week. Could he be credible enough to get an advanced copy?

  141. The songs are generic strum and vocal love songs that you can hear in any coffeehouse on a Tuesday night.

Sorry, but this is exactly the way I have seen Lee since his first day on Idol.

Then Idol was successful in its mission for season 9. In case nobody noticed (kidding of course as I know y’all noticed) Idol got exactly what they were looking for, a coffeehouse singer/songwriter type. In their attempt to cash in on the next Taylor Swift (as if), they cast Lilly, Katelyn, Lacey, Crystal, Didi, Alex, Andrew, Lee and more that I can’t even remember. Bring on all the little Justin Bieber clones season 10.

  142. I have a feeling the “poor Lee review” wasn’t thoroughly reviewed by the poster :)
