PREACH IT! Auto-Tuned voices aren’t the only TV ‘reality’ that producers control [Updated]

During the first year of “American Idol, ” contestants were so loosely handled that they could be collared and even interviewed during cigarette or water breaks before and after tapings; the kids milled and mingled out in the parking lots with everyone else. That all changed within a year; now access to contestants is arranged far in advance through publicists. Even contestants’ families are generally muzzled by publicists on shows like this.

Given all that careful micromanagement, is it really surprising that the voices on a show like “X Factor” aren’t exactly real?

What happens when reality TV starts getting real

(CNN) — Fans of Fantasia Barrino’s reality show “Fantasia For Real” won’t have long before they learn if the series will live up to its name.

The second season of the VH1 show premieres September 19, after the singer’s overdose following allegations about her relationship with a married man.

The incident raises the issue of how reality shows handle the troubles and tragedies of their stars before an audience expecting an insider’s view of the subjects’ lives.

  1. Alex Lambert performs at the Sunset Music Fest

From @ificandream: It’s official @TrueAlexLambert is scheduled to perform @ the Sunset Music Fest this Sat. 8/28 @The Roxy 6:35 pm!! Tix: http://bit.ly/bbUjei

I guess Alex is part of the “+50 bands” Back when this was first announced, it seemed like an odd fit. I’m not familiar with the festival, but most of the artists performing (or at least advertised) are pretty hard hitting, not a lot of soft pop. Heck they are having a slash tribute, so IDK.

Can anyone familiar with the festival speak to this?

  2. Now if AI will admit their studio recordings are auto-tuned as well….

  3. Looks like Adam and the band are visiting the Donors Choose offices in NYC today according to their tweet. There’s also going to be a middle school band that has received instruments through the charity.

I wonder if the M&G’s sold through the fan club will be like the one in the videos above? With inteview from a radio station with an audience. I assume there will be radio station winners along with the fans who bought tickets.

  4. Regarding Autotune, I’ve now read a few articles, including extracts from ex contestants both sides of the Atlantic, claiming that the sound as heard in the studio or theater is so much better than that heard on TV. It certainly explains why viewers find it difficult to believe the over-exhuberance often displayed by the judges towards seemingly average performances and don’t forget how reportedly most Idols sound so much better when experienced live on the Idols’ Tour than they did on the TV show.

Knowing this, I can understand the temptation for producers to reproduce the apparent “magic” that the judges etc experienced at the time by “enhancing” the edit somewhat when possible. The raw TV edits must sometimes come across as a real disappointment to them after the event.

Simon has reportedly piped up about this for the first time

Last night Simon Cowell, 50, jetted into the UK and ordered an immediate ban on the gizmo being used in future shows in an attempt to dampen the furore. Cowell insisted to friends he was shocked by the claims and launched an immediate probe. A source said: “He only came back from holiday yesterday and as soon as he landed he was very busy taking lots of calls from production and ITV bosses. He said ‘the sh** has hit the fan’ and was shocked about the fans’ reaction and wanted to do something straightaway.
The integrity of the show is very important to him and so he told production that Auto-Tune cannot be used again. Simon has banned producers from ever using this software again.”

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2010/08/24/x-factor-auto-tune-scandal-deepens-amidst-claims-performances-were-altered-during-live-finals-115875-22509159/

  5. With electronic fakery such as Auto-Tune, the least important aspect of a singer’s talent becomes the ability to actually sing. Anybody with the looks and charisma could be a star even if he/she can’t carry a tune. But if the public is stupid enough to buy it, it’s not the music industry that’s mainly at fault.

  6. Heck they are having a slash tribute, so IDK.

The executive producer phoned Alex last night during live stream to tell him they’ve increased his set length, so his band needs to rehearse more songs for the Sunset Strip Music Festival. He also said that Alex would be introduced to Fergie and Slash.

  7. Regarding Autotune, It certainly explains why viewers find it difficult to believe the over-exhuberance often displayed by the judges towards seemingly average performances….

I’m thinking it’s time the judges watched the performances on TV, rather than live. :-)

  8. I often believe that seeing someone live is truly a different experience than hearing via tv or studio recording. It is much, much different. I often wonder how many people just get caught in the moment of seeing the artist live? Granted I would guess they are better live to some degree. To me it still doesn’t make sense to autotune in the show from a “lets give them a contract perspective, but it does from a “let’s produce a good show” perspective. The reality for me is that some of these folks will get contracts and will be expected to sing well in studio recordings and live then look foolish if they can’t. Then in my mind.. what happens when they don’t like that R&B singer with the crooked teeth? Do they just ‘skip’ their auto-tune to enhance that cute 15 year old fetus knock off?

As far as the idol folks.. sorry but I think they are what they are. My perspective on this is that they were moderately talented, but vastly inexperienced on the stage and in front of a camera. With this in mind, I would expect them to improve greatly for the idol tour live concert singing the same songs night after night.

  9. Ex-‘X Factor’ stars blast Auto-Tune

He continued: “I can tell you what the problem is, it’s the live auditions on the large stage. Even the best singers make mistakes, but in a live arena where the sound reverberates and bounces around, the judges don’t hear the clean live feed, so when recording the show, they probably sound OK, but when the producers play it back to edit, the live feed is unforgiving, every slightly pitchy note is glaringly obvious.

“It’s the same on the live shows, judges can say someone was great but when it’s played back on the TV the public hear the ‘clean’ feed and little pitch problems show badly whereas in the auditorium they don’t show as much. The producers must have played it back and thought, ‘oh my god, we need to do something’.”

Osbourne ‘to help Walsh on X Factor’

Sharon Osbourne will reportedly return to The X Factor to help Louis Walsh at the Judges’ Houses stage of the competition.

Osbourne quit the programme’s panel two years ago but The Sun claims that she has been drafted in by Walsh to help choose his finalists for the live shows.

My personal opinion is this is great for Crystal. It keeps her out there and performing after the Idols Tour is done and before her album is out. Especially given the lackluster response to Season 9, I think keeping her in people’s awareness is a great move.

ETA: I am not an expert or anything, this is just my own opinion.

Its cool that she has something booked & maybe she’ll make more connections and get more stuff booked.. but in the grand scheme of things, not that big of a deal. Its good exposure and helps to establish her name, but unless she actually has something to sell.. then it is mostly great for the fans. JMO

  15. I love the Adam interview! The part about the Ford Fusion is so funny … “I’m not driving that”. LOL

  16. Its cool that she has something booked & maybe she’ll make more connections

Like maybe seal a deal with Michael Franti in regards to some collaboration? And isn´t it true that only a small portion of the crowd actually see her perform?

  17. Regarding Crystal: My personal opinion is that they should take advantage of every opportunity that they are offered (btw: Not a music expert). She might not have a single out to purchase yet, but it will help with name recognition when she does release it. Also, these venues allow them the opportunity to network with other artists that they wouldn’t normally get to meet. This might lead to collaboration/touring opportunities in the future. In this cutthroat industry, it can only help them to have more people in their corner.

  18. i loved Adam’s ”yeah-thousand-times-yes-are-you-freakin-kiddin-me” face when he was being asked about tongue diving Kris.

  19. The integrity of the show is very important to him and so he told production that Auto-Tune cannot be used again. Simon has banned producers from ever using this software again.

BWAH! Integrity of the show? Does he think we’re daft? Or maybe he’s auditioning for Britain’s “Next Top Comic.”

And, Eriko, I think that festival sounds like a GREAT opportunity for Crystal. Fifty THOUSAND music lovers (or friends of lovers) at that show. What better exposure, especially for someone with Crystal’s talent? And for a good cause. Brilliant really, although she risks alienating her more conservative fans, I suppose.

  20. Wow, I don’t normally watch Adam interview, but just happened to click on the first one, and I can’t believe Adam actually agreed with the proposition that he could be the last legitimate star from the show. Just wow again. Didn’t bother watching the rest.

I’m excited! :) This is my neck of the woods, SF, so I’m going to make it a point to go. In early September, it can be really hot and nice at Golden Gate Park (our Indian Summer), or foggy and cold as the beezejus!! Festival overall sounds really cool, and I bet she fits right in. I think this festival is great general exposure for Crystal to establish herself as a singer/musician, and for others outside the idol bubble to be introduced to her. I’m hoping she sings a bunch of her original tunes!

  22. Wow, I don’t normally watch Adam interview, but just happened to click on the first one, and I can’t believe Adam actually agreed with the proposition that he could be the last legitimate star from the show. Just wow again. Didn’t bother watching the rest.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. It just bothers me because it seems like a put-down on his season mates as well as future season Idols. So far Kris and Danny are making cases for themselves in the music industry.

  23. Regarding Autotune, I’ve now read a few articles, including extracts from ex contestants both sides of the Atlantic, claiming that the sound as heard in the studio or theater is so much better than that heard on TV. It certainly explains why viewers find it difficult to believe the over-exhuberance often displayed by the judges towards seemingly average performances

Yet at the same time, there are those AI performances where the judges’ reactions don’t seem OTT at all because the performance was just THAT good. I mean I didn’t see the judges’ reactions to Kelly’s Stuff Like That There or Fantasia’s Summertime or Archie’s Imagine as OTT because they deserved the exuberant praise. But where were those types of performances this past season? Every season or so it seems we see a handful of performances that are really transcendent no matter your musical preference, so I guess I’m just expecting that if the contestant is really talented, they should perform live on TV up to the levels of the past standouts on the show — without auto-tuning I don’t think I’m expecting too much, am I?

End of the day, I’d rather the audience not be pandered to and be fooled into thinking that some above average but not great talent is up to Kelly or Fantasia levels of awesomeness by having producers mess with the feed.

  24. This doesn’t surprise me at all. It just bothers me because it seems like a put-down on his season mates as well as future season Idols. So far Kris and Danny are making cases for themselves in the music industry.

i went back to listen again after watching the interview yesterday and I didn’t hear that at all. They are talking about the ‘mess of American Idol’ and he said they could find someone any season. The whole ‘star’ concept the radio interviewers are asking about is a loaded question for anyone looking to read between the lines. I don’t think he’s intentionally putting down anyone, especially Danny or Kris.

  25. Can someone tell me if or how valuable or important it could be for Crystal to perform at the above festival?

I’m a big believer – and maybe this comes from my indie artist manager days – that getting new ears to hear your music is almost always a good thing. And I think this festival fits nicely with the artist that Crystal is and wants to be and what she believes in. I don’t know her… but that’s just the impression I get, that this is the right vibe for her. That’s a LOT of potential listeners and she’s so darn talented, that can only be a good thing.

  26. I totally agree. Also, I don’t believe that the talent isn’t in the pool. I often wonder how many Kellys, Carries, Archies, (insert idol name of favorite moment here) are left sitting in the stadium in hopes of ‘casting’ the right group. I truly think they are there. Perhaps the producers have the audition too much down to a science. IDK. But yea. autotune shouldn’t be necessary.

  27. Wow, I don’t normally watch Adam interview, but just happened to click on the first one, and I can’t believe Adam actually agreed with the proposition that he could be the last legitimate star from the show. Just wow again. Didn’t bother watching the rest.

I´m a huge Crystal fan, but koshka is correct. IMO, Adam did not agree with the interviewer and was trying to disagree with him and answered,”…but someone could come out of this year or next” but was then kind of cut off by the interviewer with the next question before Adam could finish his thought. Well, that´s how I saw it anyway

  28. Wow, that show Crystal is doing seems so right up her alley. Good for her!

  29. I don’t think AI has hidden the fact that there is auto-tune on the studio recordings, have they? I remember a top-three article from S8 where it was mentioned in passing about Adam being auto-tuned, wasn’t a big deal as I recall.

Well everything gets auto tuned, just like photos getting air brushed. There is a fine line between touching up and completely overhauling a voice. I expect studio recording to be auto tuned, but if a show says they are ‘live’, then the auto should be untouched.

  31. I don’t think AI has hidden the fact that there is auto-tune on the studio recordings, have they?

Not that I have any idea, I just assumed since auto-tune was the norm in studio recordings (is it not?) the same applied to AI studio recordings.

Imo, Crystal sounded better live than studio recorded, while some others sounded so much better studio recorded. My question, could “auto-tune” strip some of the emotions and nuances from the singing? Just wondering if they auto-tune by default, regardless if needed or not, and took something away in the process???

  32. I expect studio recording to be auto tuned, but if a show says they are ‘live’, then the auto should be untouched.

Yeah, that’s where I am – “live” vocals should be just that, live. That said, there are an awful lot of wonky vocals on Idol, I don’t really think they’ve done anything with the live vocals yet…

  33. but if a show says they are ‘live’, then the auto should be untouched.

Is there any doubt??? I didn´t even know it was possible!

I need to be educated, are some live concerts auto-tuned? I thought the dreaded lip sync we see so often was due to not being able to auto-tune live

  34. Simon Cowell must think the great British public are completely daft, if he thinks they’ll believe he didn’t know about the auto-tuning…

    Oh wait…! :lol

That said, I don’t believe they used auto-tune on AI for two reasons: 1) Lee Dweyze and 2) the lip synced group songs.

  35. Oh, and while we’re talking about Saint Roland of the Beer Belly (who was *really* fit and trim at Busch Gardens, I gotta say)… I don’t know about the other Cook fans out there who are starved for *anything* and I don’t know if you’ve seen this but I fell down the rabbit hole last night trying to stay awake so I could get more proofreading finished and I watched this “Best of the Declaration Tour” playlist that was put together… didn’t really help my angsty, cranky longing for new Cook music but… it sure is purty!

  37. There is only one AI who deserved to be titled a saint. And she has proven it these past days. Saint Fantasia!

  38. Oh, and while we’re talking about Saint Roland of the Beer Belly (who was *really* fit and trim at Busch Gardens, I gotta say)

Fit and trim or not, I still like that name. LOL. I now declare his sainthood forever more, just so I get to use it again and again. Or we could knight him if you like. Sir Locktopus? Duke of Comboverton? Your choice. :D

  39. Haha! I love Adam’s interviews! He is so funny and at ease with anything they throw at him. Can anybody clarify what he said after the being single but friendly part? I couldn’t catch what he was saying that made everybody laugh.

  40. The interviewer was right, American Idol is a mess. It was he that said Adam was the possibly the last legitemate star from Idol. All Adam said was there could possibly be one in the next season coming up. He didn’t try to blow smoke up someone’s behind and say there was one from season 9, and quite a few people would agree. I guess he could have went all pollyanna and spout a lot of crap defending season 9 and future Idols down the road. Adam knows Idol is in trouble and are trying to transition a awful season. He don’t know if they will be able to bring the focus back to the contestants and help produce some future stars.

  41. aa618892: Adam said “I’m friendly, if that makes any sense.”

  42. The interviewer was right, American Idol is a mess.

Compared to what? That it was the number 1 watched show and therefore the most popular with 20 million viewers? Everything is relative. If this would have been the first season, people would be talking about how great and a total success it was. No?

  43. Thanks Yankeefan08- I imagine there was a little innuendo there, LOL.

  44. If this would have been the first season, people would be talking about how great and a total success it was. No?

If S9 would have been S1, I’m not sure I would be too interested in S2. Something about S1 suckered me in. Kelly’s ‘Stuff Like That There’ I think! While I was very disappointed in S9, I still watched. I didn’t care about the outcome, but I watched like a train wreck. And I’ll do it again this year. Maybe it will get better or maybe it won’t.

  45. the next legitimate star.

it`s the radio interviewer opinion, no adam`s

  46. Compared to what? That it was the number 1 watched show and therefore the most popular with 20 million viewers? Everything is relative. If this would have been the first season, people would be talking about how great and a total success it was. No?

Well there you go. It’s still pretty successful as a TV show, and reels in the people advertisers want in droves. But its success as a manufacturer of future music superstars may be on the wane. I’m pretty sure the producers of the TV show won’t care too much however. They just need the alums to do well enough that decent people keep auditioning.

  47. If S9 would have been S1, I’m not sure I would be too interested in S2. Something about S1 suckered me in. Kelly’s ‘Stuff Like That There’ I think!

Imo, you kind of proofed my point, by talking about something in season 1 that…..If season 9 would have been season 1, you wouldn´t have anything to compare, so makes your argument mute imo. Maybe you would have been disappointed, but you won´t ever be able to know for sure. All I know, if some show captured 20 million viewers in the first season, it would be headline news in a very good way

No you misread what I was saying. Had there been a performance in S9 that captured my attention like Kelly did in Season 1, I would have definitely watched the next season. I remember that performance like yesterday, I thought Idol found a star. And they did! I didn’t have that reaction to any performance in S9. I may not have been interested in S2 if that was all I knew, it was dull. There’s been other seasons where I had no horse in the race at all. And that’s fine, I just watch and not vote. Just because the ratings are still #1 doesn’t mean the show is not on the decline.

I’m lost… not sure I follow the logic here.

All I know, if some show captured 20 million viewers in the first season, it would be headline news in a very good way

I would not bet the show would have gotten 20 million viewers had this been the very first season. AI averaged over 30 million at its peak, and a lot of the 20 million viewers S9 got are from viewers sticking around because they are megafans of previous seasons and still believe in what the show could be, not because they were riveted by this season… JMO.

Maybe or maybe not 20m, know will know. My main point, it´s a fact that 20 million saw this season and was the number 1 popular show. Calling that a failure like someone did, is in my view wrong. If my earning went down from $30 mill to 20 Mill, I´d not call it a failure. But that´s just me, modest about my earnings :) Main point, everything is relative

This is the show Kris filmed a cameo back in May and Lindsey Parker interviewed Kris on set. Gigantic is now set to premiere October 1, 2010 on TeenNick after being pushed back from July. Kris doesn’t appear until the finale.

  57. VEVO initially made the following video accessible only to those who have their new VEVO app for iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. As promised, they have now made it available to everyone by posting it on their YouTube channel.

  58. hehehe so Adam tweeted about Katy Perry’s new Album this morning

New KatyPerry album is ridiculous!!! Peacock!

    -Firework is amazing too!

And this is Jim’s response lol

jambajim @adamlambert “Peacock” is SO good, right? You should record a sequel called “Cockatoo.” ;)

  59. Lol, Peacock is a ridiculous song. I like Firework and Circle the Drain.

  60. Neal, on the other hand, does not seem to be so amused with the whole hair thing:

    nealfingtiemann

There seems to be some confusion, I have no beard. It’s funny (read concerning) that I get more @replies concerning my hair than my music.

Of course if people *had* new music I would bet they would not be talking about hair…

Maybe it’s the curse of being a good guitar player? Hasn’t Casey said essentially the same thing?

    Smeggs…Jim’s response is funny.
I remember the Cockatoo photo shoot and the way Adam pronounced “Cockatoo” on Ellen Show.

  63. Maybe it’s the curse of being a good guitar player? Hasn’t Casey said essentially the same thing?

Heh, maybe so. I didn’t read Neal’s twitter feed – David’s scares me enough – so I don’t know what people said but I’m sure with Kyle & Andy both tweeting their facial hair removal evolution… well, attention turns to Neal. I’d much rather be watching Neal play guitar and discussing that but it’s been a bit… starved… the past couple weeks!

  64. There seems to be some confusion, I have no beard. It’s funny (read concerning) that I get more @replies concerning my hair than my music.

Newsflash- somebody tell Neal to start tweeting more about music rather than about drinking or other inane things, and maybe he’d actually get some @replies about music! Besides, the only reason people are so curious about the band beards is because Andy said in the vlog that they weren’t coming off til they’re done, and then we had Neal, Andy, and Kyle all tweet about shaving them off (though Neal and Andy did say it was premature, I believe). It’s not like the boys themselves didn’t invite all this speculation upon themselves! I could give a shit if they all had pornstaches or grizzly beards except where it might give us a clue on the recording process.

Sorry, I still love him, but if he starts sounding like Andrew with the tweet-whines, I may have to b-tch about it. FTR, I love Andrew too. He’s a lovable idiot, as far as I’m concerned.

ETA: LOL, Neal just tweeted links to buy David Cook and MWK records. Guess he got bombarded with tweets asking him to tweet about music… heh.

  65. LOL, Neal just tweeted links to buy David Cook and MWK records. Guess he got bombarded with tweets asking him to tweet about music… heh.

If we had NEW MUSIC I am betting nobody would tweet about his stupid hair, lol. They haven’t exactly given us a lot to talk about in a really, really long time. The Busch Gardens shows were nice, and we talked about them incessantly for quite some time, and now? Throw us a bone, fellas.

  66. Maybe Neal should follow Casey’s lead and start tweeting a “Song of the Day.” Sometimes you need to stop kvetching and become “part of the solution.” :-)

Adam and/or Burning Man fans may want to take a listen to a story on this afternoon’s “All Things Considered.” Very cool stuff!

    That’s cool, thanks!

  68. I totally loved that Adam interview above! I never tire of watching him, this one in particular was like friends chilling, instead of a same old same old! I love him sfm!

  69. Great interview with Adam-just when I think I’ve seen him at his best he surprises me. That goes for his performances as well.

  70. I love that interview, Adam is certainly not the bashful type. You never know what is going to come out of his mouth. It was certainly one of the funniest interviews he has done. I agree with him 100% about Jersey Shore. I hate that show and all of those idiots on it.

  71. bridgette12:

All Adam said was there could possibly be one in the next season coming up. He didn’t try to blow smoke up someone’s behind and say there was one from season 9, and quite a few people would agree.

I definitely don’t agree. I haven’t watched the interview and don’t know what Adam said, but I’m willing to bet large sums of money that we will have a star out of S9. It may not be the person most folks are expecting–it’s also not the person I voted for (tho I love him to death), but he’s going to be a star.

  72. I listened to Katy Perry’s album earlier in the day, I hope Adam is just being nice to his friend because frankly I think the album is god awful lol. Peacock is one of the most worn out cliche songs I have heard in a long time. Maybe it just comes down to a taste issue haha.

You never know, anything is possible.

  74. Oh Adam. He is a darling man.

Someone’s name got cut off at the beginning of Part 2 when he was asked about tongue diving, just before he was asked if he would tongue dive with Gaga. Did anyone catch the name?

Alex Lambert’s version of Heartbreak Hotel is amazing!

  75. There is something about a David Archuleta interview that makes me want to squish him, squeeze his head off and dangle him from my rear-view mirror.

I guess I can relate to Paula a little.

  76. Brief backstage footage of Archie and Kris jamming to “Crazy” about 4:40 into this video. Lots or Archie — and a little bit of Kris — sprinkled throughout rest of vid

Awww, Kris and Archie jamming together in that clip, love it!

  77. I really liked the Meet and Greet interview with Adam. Some of the most candid and original responses and questions I have heard in a long time. Adam was great as usual. I know it has been said many times before but i really love his interviewing as much as I love his preforming.

Wow….All I want to do is hit replay….dismembering him not an option for me…… ……….. J/K……. love your unique original expressive description on how much you like him.

  79. love your unique original expressive description on how much you like him.

Haha. That interview just put a big smile on my face and I had this sudden urge…. That phrase just came to my mind. :-)

  80. I am way late to watch that but… however much I like or dislike Alex Lambert’s personality, that kid’s voice is pretty amazing. Will be interesting to see what happens with him.

  81. Adam’s interview was pure hilarity and fun. Love it! Something different than the usual “tell me something about the song”.
