Newest ‘Idol’ is just what America needs – By Carmen Rasmusen Herbert, Special to the Deseret News

OK, I admit it: If someone would have told me 13 weeks ago that a small-town, southern, 16-year-old boy would have beat out 12 other powerhouse voices for the top spot on “American Idol” I would have called you crazy.

But that’s the thing about Scotty McCreery: He has the unique ability at such a young age to not only know exactly who he is, but how to slowly and sweetly win over millions of fans with his “throwback country” sound, as judge Randy Jackson put it.

McCreery is the embodiment of country music. He fits the mold perfectly. His voice is simple yet powerful.
