DeWyze, Bowersox single sales lag versus past seasons

If Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox hope to sell as much music as American Idolstars from years past, they have some catching up to do.

Season 9’s Idol champ and runner-up sold about 400, 000 downloads last week, with nine of their tracks ranked among the week’s 200 most popular downloads, according to preliminary data from Nielsen SoundScan.

“It’s about half the sales total of Kris Allen and Adam Lambert following the finale last year, ” says Nielsen Entertainment vice president Chris Muratore. Top finishers Allen and Lambert placed 25 songs in the top 200 during the 2009 finale week.

‘Idols’ Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox Impact Billboard Charts

This past week was the first of the current “Idol” season where the sales were transmitted to SoundScan, and thus, we see DeWyze and Bowersox arrive on the Digital Songs chart. DeWyze’s top seller is his cover of U2’s “Beautiful Day, ” which bows at No. 12 with 95, 000. Bowersox’s biggest is her rendition of Patty Griffin’s “Up to the Mountain, ” debuting at No. 32 with 49, 000.

Neither “Idol” posed a threat for the No. 1 position though. Last week’s Digital Songs No. 1, Katy Perry’s “California Gurls, ” holds onto the top slot, selling 269, 000 — up 16%. Two songs jump into the top 10 this week: La Roux’s “Bulletproof” (rising from No. 11 to No. 7 with 119, 000 — up 22%) and the “Glee” Cast’s cover of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (flying from No. 66 to No. 9 with 109, 000 — up 353%).

Crystal Bowersox And The Amazing Metaphorical Dreamcoat

Because over the next 40-something minutes, Bowersox seemingly delighted in making it clear to me that she was “a fighter, ” someone hell-bent on forging her own career path — her own songs, her own sound, her own way — despite overwhelming evidence that what she wants might very well be impossible (see the post-show bows of folks like Allison Iraheta or Diana DeGarmo for proof of this). She hasn’t even begun recording her first album, but she already knows how she doesn’t want it to sound: like an “American Idol” album.

“I’d like to do the songs that I’ve been doing for years. … I’m not opposed to working with other writers and producers, but my goal is to put out an album I really enjoy, ” she said. “I’m aware of it, I’m a fighter, I’m a passionate person, I believe in certain things very strongly and I don’t go down easy. I’ll take everything into consideration, but it’s my CD, it’s my music. I’m not going to put something out that I’m not proud of.”

Hottest books of the season are hits with local celebs

“I plan on reading “World War Z, ” “The Walking Dead” graphic novel series and anything by Francesca Lia Block that I haven’t read yet, ” “American Idol” star Siobhan Magnus wrote in an e-mail. “I like science fiction, fantasy, and comedy books the best. My favorite authors are Francesca Lia Block, Georgia Nicolson, William Shakespeare and Edward Gorey.”

Magnus starts the “American Idol Live!” tour July 1; itstops at the Comcast Center in Mansfield July 18. But she makes time to read.

“My favorite book growing up was “What Was I Scared Of?” by Dr. Seuss, which I called Pants In The Dark, ” she said. “I also loved the “Gashlycrumb Tinies” by Edward Gorey (obviously!) and anything about ancient Egypt. Oh yeah, and Goosebumps’ “Choose Your Own Adventure” books! My favorite book ever is “Dangerous Angels” by Francesca Lia Block, which is actually the first five Weetzie Bat books put together in one compilation. It’s amazing and I reread it a lot!”

Music Review: We Are The Fallen – Tear The World Down

When it was announced last summer that former American Idol contestant Carly Smithson had joined forces with three former Evanescence band members, Ben Moody, John Lecompt and Rocky Gray, along with their studio bassist, Marty O’Brien, many skeptics raised an eyebrow about this new band called, We Are The Fallen. We Are The Fallen

The comparisons to Evanescence happened immediately. I was waiting to hear the music. Yes, they kind of look like Evanescence, but would their debut album, Tear The World Down sound like Evanescence? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is yes.

New ‘Tonight Show’ Band’s Clothes Stolen

The Tonight Show’s new band has lost some of its clothes and the Los Angeles Police Department is trying to find out who stole them.

The theft at a facility in Hollywood was discovered by a stylist who went to pull the wardrobe for a photo shoot for the new band and its director Rickey Minor, most recently music director on American Idol, who is replacing Kevin Eubanks on the show beginning June 7.

Eubanks had been with The Tonight Show since Jay Leno took over in 1992, but left the show after May 28 to go on tour and to do recordings.

The new band members had not yet arrived at the facility, but a source inside NBC told The Wrap, “When the stylist went to pull the wardrobe for a photo shoot for the band, she noticed that several pieces were missing.”

‘Glee’ Will Amplify Its Christian Voice In Season 2

A fundamentalist Christian female is one of the three roles being filled by ‘Glee’s nationwide casting call. The character, says series creator Ryan Murphy, should help balance the show’s sensibilities.

“We’ve taken a couple jabs at the right wing this year, so what I want to do … is have someone who Christian kids and parents can recognize and say, ‘Oh, look—I’m represented there, too!’” Murphy tells TV Guide Magazine. “If we’re trying to form a world of inclusiveness, we’ve got to include that point of view as well.”

David Archuleta Vlogs on the Release of His New Book

The ‘American Idol’ alum hasn’t been signed yet, but he’s ready to record.

“It’s going to be something kinda new and different, ” season nine’s second runner-up told MTV News on Wednesday (June 2). “It’s probably going to be a rocky/bluesy/country-type thing. …It’ll be a way for me to do all the things that I love, because there’s no other way for me to go. It won’t be something where you don’t hear guitar, because that’s what I do. You’re definitely gonna hear guitar.”

“I mean, they could call me right now, ” he laughed. “I sat down and talked with some people and, you know, it remains to be seen, but hopefully, yeah, I’ll get a deal and be able to put out a record.”
