Backstage with the top seven; giddiness reigns at the first ever ‘save dinner’

The purpose of a reality TV competition is to win, and in modern American television, it is generally to win by the dirtiest means possible, as viewers of …Survivor and …The Bachelor can attest. But on Wednesday night, Idol seven remaining contestants chose to suspend the laws of nature and game shows and to collectively take one step away from victory — in the name of keeping their friend on the show, fighting for the life of their opponent, Matt Giraud, and imploring the judges to use their one …save to keep him in the show.

As the judges deliberated, a chant rose from the contestants bench. …Save him! Save him! Save him! which the Idoldome audience joined, creating an overwhelming groundswell that would have taken a more stubborn man even than Simon Cowell to resist.

‘Idol’ Math: 2 Judges + 2 Judges = A Big Fat Zero

Allowing “American Idol” star Simon Cowell to critique only half the show’s competitors will go down in the history books as the dumbest idea ever hatched to “tweak” the most watched television show in the country.

It will also go down in the books as the shortest-lived on-air tweak.

One episode.

Although next week there will be as many Idolettes performing at this week because the judges vetoed viewers’ decision to eliminate competitor Matt Giraud, Fox is dumping the new judging system it introduced Tuesday as a time-saving device, in which the four judges were divided into two teams and took turns critiquing every other competitor.

Viewers hated it, and said so in the network’s “Idol” chat forums.

Instead, the show will now attempt to cut out some of the “other stuff” that does so much to plump up the running time.

‘Idolatry’: Three cheers for Kris Allen!

Attention, Idol fans: Idolatry is pleased to announce that Simon Cowell is officially under our control. Not only did the Brit with a chip sign up for Team Allison, he also interrupted the results show to undo Randy Jackson pitiful …critique and salute Kris Allen’s standout performance of one of the best songs ever written. We take it all back, Simon. For us for you, you worked it out–keep on keeping it real, Dawg. Kris deserves a few more props, though, and he gets them courtesy of Michael Slezak and Missy Schwartz in the video below.

Ranking The Final Seven On American Idol

I have hit the pause button three times previously during this season of American Idol to make predictions on how everyone would finish. We have now seen everyone remaining sing at least seven times since Hollywood, and there are only five weeks to go before we finish, so this is a good opportunity to rank them one more time in order of likelihood of winning.

Billie Joe Armstrong goes nuts for Robert Pattinson, Obama and Rock of Love

What TV shows are you most addicted to?

This goes beyond guilty pleasure [laughs]. I really like a show called ‘On Safari’ that’s on the Fuel network. I like Jon Stewart and love [Stephen] Colbert. He’s the funniest human being on the planet. And for shameful, guilty, torturous pleasure is ‘Rock of Love’ with Bret Michaels. I do watch ‘American Idol, ‘ sometimes. That kid that’s on there — Adam [Lambert] — hitting those high notes? Pretty badass, man.

You were actually on ‘American Idol’ a couple of years ago.

We played [John Lennon’s] ‘Working Class Hero.’ It was interesting because we had the “F” word and their show is live, so we had to pre-record our song so that they could bleep out the “F” words. We almost got thrown off the show before it even started because they didn’t trust us. It’s like, “Man, we’ve done [live TV] so many times. We can do this.” And finally they’re like, “OK, you guys have to record it before.” So we played to a completely empty room.

You performed on the show, but would you go on as a mentor?

Oh, no way. Not in a million years [laughs]. There are two things I would never do: One is I’ll never do my own reality TV show, and two is I’ll never watch ‘Titanic.’ I live in Oakland, not Hollywood.

Love Adam Lambert? Then don’t vote for him

Jennifer Hudson. Chris Daughtry. Kellie Pickler. Clay Aiken. Bucky Covington. Even William Hung.

None of these people won their season of American Idol. Hung didn’t even get to Hollywood, but ended up making a name for himself. Jennifer Hudson has been on the big screen in “The Secret Life of Bees, ” “Dream Girls” and “Sex and the City.” Fantasia has been in “The Color Purple” on Broadway and is apparently going to be on some new reality TV show. Big deal.

‘Idol’ star Giraud plans to be ‘humble’

American Idol star Matt Giraud has vowed to keep his feet on the ground as he progresses through the competition.

The 23-year-old singer remains in the running for victory after the judges used their one-off veto power to save him this week.

Discussing his new-found fame, Giraud told KSFM-TV: “I don’t think any of us really think that we’re celebrities or anything like that. That’s why we still feel honoured to be at the premieres and for people to want our autographs.

Helio Castroneves Acquitted in Tax Fraud Case

Helio Castroneves probably feels like dancing. The racecar driver and former Dancing with the Stars winner has been acquitted on six counts of tax evasion.

A federal jury in Miami has found the Brazilian-born Indy car driver and 2007 winner of DWTS not guilty on six counts of tax evasion. Since the 12-member jury remained deadlocked on the seventh count of conspiracy, U.S District Judge Donald Graham called a mistrial on that count.

After he was booted, Grier lashed out at the judges, telling Access Hollywood: “I am proudest that I didn’t climb across that table and slap the **** out of every one of those judges and that’s my proudest accomplishment.” Referring to judge Carrie Ann Inaba (a former fly-girl on Grier’s In Living Color), he added: “She’s definitely the first in line to “kiss my a**.”

First Look: ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Season 5

As “American Idol” slowly starts to wrap up underwhelming year seven, “So You Think You Can Dance” gears up to launch its fifth season and my heart has already started to beat a little faster. While the audition rounds of “Idol” tend to be a mixed bag of nuts, “SYTYCD” manages to fill their first few weeks with a wide array of talented dancers, each showcasing unique styles.

Whether it’s the Lindy hop, West Coast swing, tap, jazz, ballet, crazy krumping or whatever Robert Muraine was doing, the audition rounds are an awesome platform for the different genres this competition embraces.
