  1. There was also the Ruben Studdard/Frenchie Davis nomination for Best Musical Show Album in “Ain’t Misbehavin'”

  2. Congrats to Kelly and Carrie. I was disappointed that DC didn’t get nominated for BNA, but maybe next year. He’s already working on his next cd and sounds very enthused about it. I really hope that next year will see DC and Allison nominated :) (my two faves right now)

There are a lot of good artists competing for these awards, I’m glad to see Taylor Swift, U2, Pink, Dave Matthews, and lots of other worthy people being nominated. This year isn’t a big one for Idol alumni, but maybe next year.

  3. I’m really happy to see Mandisa getting some real recognition for her hard work. She is such a great singer and I’m so happy with how well she has done. And of course, congratulations to Carrie and Kelly! Hoping they all win.

  4. Yay Carrie!!! I think female vocal is tough, but I think with her pull and Randy Travis’s pull they should win.

  5. Congrats to all three ladies!

I thought Daughtry may have scored a nom or two. I don’t know if any of the Idols will win, though. Carrie has that little artist named Taylor to contend with. Kelly may have a better shot, but BEP I’m guessing will be the favorite.

  6. Taylor Swift being nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal when Kelly submitted Already Gone is a big WTH??? for me. But at least Kelly got nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album.

I would be soooooooooo happy if Carrie and Randy could win a Grammy together for I Told You So but Brad and Keith have been sweeping for Start A Band. Which is a fun song but hardly awardworthy. I love Brad and Keith and they are capable of much MUCH MUCH better.

Congratulations to Mandisa, Kelly, and Carrie on their nominations!

  7. Looks like Carrie’s got some tough competition in the Female Country Vocal. It would sure be nice to see her take home that trophy four years in a row!

Oh, and Here Comes Goodbye got nominated for Country Vocal by a Group, but not Country Song. So Sligh can’t quite call himself “Grammy-nominated” just yet. Heh.

  8. Frenchie Davis becomes the first non-finalist to get a Grammy nomination (if you take out those who just auditioned, were snubbed and became big later).

  9. Ruben and Frenchie info:

  10. LOL i would love to see Kelly reaction to Halo getting a few noms. Record and Pop Vocal.

  11. I think this one goes to the artists, but Rascal Flatts was nominated for best duo or group performance for Clint Lagerberg and Chris Sligh’s song “Here Comes Goodbye.”

  12. I’m kinda annoyed that Kelly was snubbed for Best Pop Vocal but at least she got a Pop Album vocal. Congrats to Carrie for yet another year of Grammy nominations.

  13. I think this one goes to the artists, but Rascal Flatts was nominated for best duo or group performance for Clint Lagerberg and Chris Sligh’s song ‘Here Comes Goodbye.’

Correct. It would only go to Chris Sligh if it was nominated in a songwriter category, which it isn’t.

  14. There was speculation that David Cook might be nominated for Best New Artist, but it was not to be.

Poor David! And he was one of only 3 new artists to go Platinum this year :( Maybe next time David, maybe next time!

Personally these nominations and the state of music in general suck!

  15. Congrats to Kelly and Carrie. Would have like to see Kelly nominated instead of Kate Perry for best female pop vocal

  16. The only reason Carrie wasn’t nominated for more is because she has been off for the last year. Her new album wasn’t able to be up for nominations.

and I am so sick of Taylor Swift.

Carrie has FV in the bag for sure.

    thankfully these aren’t fan voted.

  17. Congrats to Carrie, Kelly and Mandisa!

Carrie has gotten at least one Grammy nom every year since she entered the biz. She has a total of 7 noms now and 4 wins.

  18. I wonder what Leona and Simon are thinking about Halo being nominated… considering she turned it down

  19. Congratulations to Mandisa, Kelly, and Carrie on their nominations!

Kelly should have gotten that Best Female Pop Vocal. I don’t see Taylor Swift as that strong of a singer. There’s simply no comparison.

Personally these nominations and the state of music in general suck!

I feel a lot of people would agree with you.

  20. Go Kelly! I’m still disappointed My December didn’t get nominated. This sort of makes up for it. Hopefully she’ll get to perform “Already Gone” on the broadcast. I’m not at all surprised by Carrie’s nomination. She’s a machine at these awards shows.

Congrats to Mandisa, too. She doesn’t perform music I like listening to but it’s always nice to see an AI alum nominated.

  21. Gaga all the way! She’s worked hard for it all year and deserves to finally be recognized. So over the Taylor Swift competition steamroller!

  22. Hey, Adam managed to get a cameo while the Black Eyed Peas performed ‘I Got A Feeling’ at the nominations night!

I didn’t expect to see Adam there!

Daughtry was there too, almost right after Adam. heheh

  23. Grats to Kelly, Carrie, and Mandisa! It really is a shame that David Cook didn’t get a nomination.

It will be interesting to see if Taylor Swift beats out Carrie … or Miranda Lambert beats out them both.

Looking through the full list, I was surprised to see so many from my era(s) nominated – Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan (sort of cracked up at best solo vocal), Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, John Fogerty, AC/DC, Bono, etc.

  24. So over Taylor Swift. It should be GAGA’S year at the Grammy’s. She has totally deserved it. And she can actually SING.

  25. Looking through the full list, I was surprised to see so many from my era(s) nominated ‘“ Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan (sort of cracked up at best solo vocal), Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, John Fogerty, AC/DC, Bono, etc.

And yet, in the media, the women fans of that era get ridiculed. (“cougars” and “frau” anyone?)

  26. It’s weird about “frau.” To me it has positive connotations. It’s the German word for woman. Young women are fraulines. As in Ricky Nelson’s “Traveling Man” …

Oh my sweet Fraulien down in Berlin town
Makes my heart start to yearn

It’s too bad that people (media and whomever) want to denigrate women as they get older. We all get older, male and female. No sense taking a good word and making it negative, don’t let them do that.

Re Taylor Swift, she deserves all her nominations. She had an amazing year. It’s a great cd. I love both of her cds. Love her songs. They’re great. She’s very talented and also very popular and successful. So I think she doesn’t have to worry about what non-fans think of her.

Funny that I am aghast that rap and hiphop artists get so many nominations, while others are aghast about Taylor Swift. It all comes down to what you like and what you admire I guess.

  27. Well, definitely happy for Kelly and Carrie!

But um, since when is You Belong With Me > Already Gone? SMH. Did they not nominate the song ’cause they were nominating Halo? And Katy Perry? REALLY?! Um….

  28. For all you David Cook fans that are dissapointed…my heartfelt condolences. It sucks when your fav isn’t recognized for their obvious talents….hopefully the New Year will bring good tidings to David and that he will have new opportunities with his second album. He has worked really hard this year to perform for his fans and to develop more of them. Good luck to you all in the future.

  29. The cast album for Ain’t Misbehavin’–featuring Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis–is also nominated in category 80.

Oh–and Keri Hilson will likely win the new artist award, but in that crowd, it’s pretty surprising that David Cook isn’t in there.

Could there be more categories? Jasmine Trias should release an album of traditional Hawaiian music–that should maximize the odds of getting nominated. (Some of these categories are so specific.)

  30. i think Taylor deserves all her nominations. it is her year. hers and Gaga’s. stop all this “cant sing” rhetoric. let me mention a name: Dylan. there are others if you think about it. its all about the songs not the voice.

cant wait for Gaga’s performance. her live performances are always provocative and very entertaining w/o resorting to overtly sexual.

im disappointment that DC did not get a nomination. but hopefully this will give him more inspiration for his next album. maybe next year he will catch the big ones.

  31. Hey, Adam managed to get a cameo while the Black Eyed Peas performed ‘I Got A Feeling’ at the nominations night!

Ha! I loved that for so many reasons. First – yes, I’m lame – but I really do love that song. And, Adam & Chris D both amused me there. But, most importantly, just happy to know that the imaginary 20 year love affair that LL Cool J and I have had only in my head is still going strong :)

  32. For all you David Cook fans that are dissapointed’ ¦my heartfelt condolences. It sucks when your fav isn’t recognized for their obvious talents’ ¦.hopefully the New Year will bring good tidings to David and that he will have new opportunities with his second album. He has worked really hard this year to perform for his fans and to develop more of them. Good luck to you all in the future.

    Thanks for saying that :)

i think Taylor deserves all her nominations. it is her year. hers and Gaga’s. stop all this ‘cant sing’ rhetoric. let me mention a name: Dylan. there are others if you think about it. its all about the songs not the voice.

Hear hear! (Or is it “here here!”? I am never sure.)

  33. i think Taylor deserves all her nominations. it is her year. hers and Gaga’s. stop all this ‘cant sing’ rhetoric.

Yes she does deserve all her nominations EXCEPT for female vocalist. If she wins, that would be FOREVER unfair to the other nominees. Period. But I agree, she deserves all the other nominations that she’s got, she’s the best selling artist this year other than Michael Jackson. And You Belong With Me is brilliant.

  34. Really? Are we comparing Taylor’s songwriting to Bob Dylan’s now? She can’t even use Romeo and Juliet properly. There seems to be a general consensus that Taylor is far from being a great singer. (And no, I don’t accept the excuse that she’s only 19. LeAnn Rimes was a brilliant singer at 14.) Taylor gets praised instead for being a brilliant songwriter. (And she’s only 19!) Miranda Lambert is a much better songwriter. Sure, reward Taylor for selling a LOT of albums and a LOT of concert tickets, but come on, the overhype and overexposure is getting too much. It’s probably because I’m not in her target audience, but I really don’t see what other people are seeing. Her songs seem so immature for me. Maybe I’m just getting old. Or feel old. “She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers”… makes me go huh.

ETA: I feel weird commenting without any mention of the Idols. Um, go Idols!

  35. Funny that I am aghast that rap and hiphop artists get so many nominations, while others are aghast about Taylor Swift.

Rap and hiphop may get nominted but they don’t clean up at awards shows the way other artists do. They win within their categories but not outside. I think the Black Eyed Peas may be the closest thing to hip hop that has done very well in many cagtegories and I think they more than deserve it. Not only do they have a very good and unique sound, but they have Fergie, who has more stage presence than 10 Taylor Swifts combined. People forget that while great lyrics may be important, there are a lot of genres of music that have their foundations in dance (or inspiring people to dance). That is just as important, IMO.

Personally I think there are a lot of rap artists that are far wittier when it comes to lyrics than Taylor Swift and deserve to be there just as much as everyone else. The generalizations about rap being substandard and only about killing cops etc is a broad generalization based on ignorance. The rap songs that do become immensely popular are very good. Some have very funny lyrics and some are just unbelievably catchy. And just like a lot of other top40 songs, some just plain suck but no more than any other genre. Interestingly when artists such as Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake or Kevin Rudolph want to revive their career…they frequently turn to peole like Timbaland or L’iL Wayne or Missy Elliot. I’m not a country fan at all, but I can appreciate the talent of artists such as Keith Urban or Carrie Underwood. Don’t see it in Taylor Swift. She’s more talented than the average teenager and I can understand her appeal to teens (sort of), but it’s almost a travesty for her to get awards over artists like Carrie and Beyonce.

  36. Sad that DC wasn’t nominated, but I wasn’t expecting it, so wasn’t surprised.

Onward and upward, to quote the man.

  37. But I agree, she deserves all the other nominations that she’s got, she’s the best selling artist this year

Well, if sales was the criteria, then Cook for sure should have been nominated for BNA. He has the highest sales for any new artist this year. Oh well, I’m sure Cook is looking forward to next year.

  38. Oops I forgot.. BIG congrats to Kelly and Carrie and Mandisa (although I’m not familiar with her). Glad Kelly wasn’t overlooked. Bummed of course about David Cook, but hopefully next year will be different. It’s hard to see such talent and soul go unrecognized. However, I don’t think this last album represents his best work yet, so maybe it just wasn’t the right time. Thanks for your words, Tess.

  39. leilamaurizia, word. The thing for me, is that it’s kind of like the industry patting themselves in the back for her success.

See, I like Taylor. She seems like a sweet kid…and she has sold extremely well. It will be interesting to see how she develops. I mean, she can’t sing about being “cheer captain” or whatever forever. Right?

  40. I think TS hasnt had the same life experiences of other teens her age. True, she is 19 but when you see her at awards, etc. she comes across as much younger. At country awards shows, she actually skips to get her awards. I think her younger personna will keep her in good stead with the teen/tween crowd a few more years. She has just moved into her own place and said she had a tree house built in her living room. huh? Her label has been genius about her promotion and handling, cutting her album on itunes to 3.99 for a week when released, rereleasing it again to prop the numbers up even more. I can agree with all her awards except vocalist, no way, no how. Shes had a vocal coach for at least one year because he was on the first year of Can You Duet and told it. I doubt it brought him any new business.

  41. Maybe I’m just getting old. Or feel old. ‘She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers’ ’ ¦ makes me go huh.

Well, I’m old too, and I think that’s a good line.

  42. Well, I’m old too, and I think that’s a good line.

Why? No really, I’m curious. There are times when I want to have a good discussion with Taylor supporters… but I guess this isn’t really the place to do it. I feel like that little kid in The Emperor’s New Clothes where everyone’s ooohing and aaahhhing and I’m confuzzled as to why. Anyway, it really all boils down to mileages varying so… go, Taylor?

I’m not a Twilight fan, but I can think of Rob Pattz right now. On one of the morning shows before, fans were screaming “I love you!” and he asked: “Why?” That got him points with me right there.
