Glee – Britney/Brittany – Recap and Videos!

GLEE: Brittany (Heather Morris) dreams of being Britney Spears in the "Britney/Brittany" episode of GLEE airing Tuesday, Sept. 28 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2010 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Adam Rose/FOX

Update: Britney Spears live-tweeted the episode as she watched in PDT!  Read them HERE.

Well, that was fun. But, now that we’ve got the a). Expository season-opener and b) Ratings-grabber pop icon tribute out of the way, I’m ready for some full-on drama! And I’m hearing next week’s episode “Grilled Cheesus” is going to do just that…

Back to the Britney episode! Heather Morris finally got the spotlight she deserves. The ex-So You Think You Can Dance contestant who almost made the Top 20 a few years ago, showed some fierce moves. Plus, we got a SYTYCD bonus–Mark Kanemura performing as part of the dance ensemble.  I’m really looking forward to the Ke$ha solo next week. Heh.

Also real life–Matt Morrison was quoted pooh-pooing  Britney Spears back when the possibility of a tribute episode was still a rumor–was written cleverly into the script.  The episode was also a cool showcase of Matt’s singing and dancing skillz as he (inappropriately!) performed “Toxic” with the kids at school assembly (Here’s hoping Harry Shum Jr. is up for a spotlight soon. There’s a guy with moves!)

While the show lacked some plot development and emotion (Rachel’s teary performance of “The Only Exception” notwithstanding), there were plenty of snappy one liners.  For instance, the nonsense uttered by the kids said as they came out of anesthesia was hilarious:  “Are you a cat?” a dopey Brittany asks Carl (played by an affable  John Stamos). Principal Figgins’ deadpan introduction of New Directions at assembly, “Students who ate the ravioli today and are not up to date on their tetanus shots, should see the nurse immediately.”  And Rachel on admiring Britney Spears, “I look forward to the day the paparazzi provokes me and I attack them.”

Britney Spears’ little feel-good cameos (loved her lecturing Tina during Artie’s fantasy) gave the show a stamp-of-approval, as did her tweet-a-thon during the episode’s PDT airing.

A little goes a long way.  Reports say the next and only Season 2 tribute show will be the post-Superbowl episode in January.  No matter how high the ratings were last night, I hope Ryan Murphy sticks to that promise.  The show could jump the shark fast.  Actually, I feel a backlash coming on any minute.  Let’s not add fuel to the fire.
