Well, that was fun. But, now that we’ve got the a). Expository season-opener and b) Ratings-grabber pop icon tribute out of the way, I’m ready for some full-on drama! And I’m hearing next week’s episode “Grilled Cheesus” is going to do just that…

Back to the Britney episode! Heather Morris finally got the spotlight she deserves. The ex-So You Think You Can Dance contestant who almost made the Top 20 a few years ago, showed some fierce moves. Plus, we got a SYTYCD bonus–Mark Kanemura performing as part of the dance ensemble.  I’m really looking forward to the Ke$ha solo next week. Heh.

Also real life–Matt Morrison was quoted pooh-pooing  Britney Spears back when the possibility of a tribute episode was still a rumor–was written cleverly into the script.  The episode was also a cool showcase of Matt’s singing and dancing skillz as he (inappropriately!) performed “Toxic” with the kids at school assembly (Here’s hoping Harry Shum Jr. is up for a spotlight soon. There’s a guy with moves!)

While the show lacked some plot development and emotion (Rachel’s teary performance of “The Only Exception” notwithstanding), there were plenty of snappy one liners.  For instance, the nonsense uttered by the kids said as they came out of anesthesia was hilarious:  “Are you a cat?” a dopey Brittany asks Carl (played by an affable  John Stamos). Principal Figgins’ deadpan introduction of New Directions at assembly, “Students who ate the ravioli today and are not up to date on their tetanus shots, should see the nurse immediately.”  And Rachel on admiring Britney Spears, “I look forward to the day the paparazzi provokes me and I attack them.”

Britney Spears’ little feel-good cameos (loved her lecturing Tina during Artie’s fantasy) gave the show a stamp-of-approval, as did her tweet-a-thon during the episode’s PDT airing.

A little goes a long way.  Reports say the next and only Season 2 tribute show will be the post-Superbowl episode in January.  No matter how high the ratings were last night, I hope Ryan Murphy sticks to that promise.  The show could jump the shark fast.  Actually, I feel a backlash coming on any minute.  Let’s not add fuel to the fire.

  1. Brittany’s hot and all, but I’d prefer her dressed with class >_>.

  2. Not me. Brittany looks ridiculously sexy. Santana looks quite amazing as well.

  3. I freakin LOVE this show. So awesome!

The quotes from this show will have me set for at least a week

  4. Aww I’m so glad Rachel and Finn got on good terms :)
Toxic was awesome! Mr. Schue was great.
Brittany and Sue both had some amazing lines this week haha.

    Next week looks intense!

I can’t believe Rachael was happy crying at the end-that was so sweet :)

Im pretty sure I’ll cry the next episode awwwwww.

    Glee is a masterpiece. Period.

  6. Glee is a masterpiece. Period.

Duh. I totally agree. I was smiling the entire time but I drink alot.

  7. “Mr. Schue, let me be your Britney” LOL I think i just have a crush on Matt Morrison… XDDD thanks Toxic

  8. that episode was… amazing/epic/ridiculous/outtathisworld/ everything i could have hoped for and more. Pretty close to being my fave episode so far. They were fantastic doing the brit songs, but paramore-only exception at the end? stellar. cannot wait to watch it again!!

    and next week? ohemgee.

  9. Well, that was fun!

Brittany’s quotes are enough to have me laughing for a while. So many good ones!

I absolutely adore Britney so this episode was golden.

    Loved Artie’s stronger!

Toxic was awesome and hilarious all in one.

Nice to see “Uncle Jesse” again. :) He’s such a good looking man.

Only thing I must say I didn’t care for was Rachel’s “Baby one more time” because well, Rachel just is too much of a singer for such a song. It just didn’t sound right.

Oh well. I was highly entertained and I’ll be laughing till next Tuesday.

  10. I seriously balled my eyes out over The Only Exception. Rachel’s voice always gives me chills. And Britney outdid Britney, IMHO.

  11. What’s wrong with me? I just didn’t like this one. Not enough Sue and Kurt, and getting sick of Rachel and her solos ALREADY! John Stamos was great though, and toxic was hot.

  12. What’s wrong with me? I just didn’t like this one. Not enough Sue and Kurt, and getting sick of Rachel and her solos ALREADY! John Stamos was great though, and toxic was hot.

I think it suffered a bit from what the Madonna episode suffered from…no plot. It was obvious the plot of the Madonna episode and this Britney episode were the two pop icons, not necessarily a story line. Story line seemed like an afterthought.

For me, I loved it, but I also think I prepared myself for the worst based on how I thought the Madonna episode came over.

  13. I thought the Britney songs were just okay.

But the Sue quotes had me laughing out loud, and the Paramore song killed. By far, by far my favorite of the night. And like others, I’m tired of Rachel getting all the good stuff. Do fans really love her or something?

And John Stamos is a George Clooney clone. I never noticed that before.

  14. ^I love Rachel (and Lea Michele’s voice). The more songs she gets, the better IMHO. I feel like she’s that much better then some of them especially, when it comes to vocals, so I’m never disappointed to hear her sing.

Even you said the Paramore song was the best of the night. Well, Rachel sang that. Would it have been as good if Quinn had sang it?

  15. Oh I like Rachel’s singing fine, I just like variety more. I thought the new girl from last week was an amazing singer. I didn’t expect that, but wish she was there to do more.

  16. I didn’t watch the show, but is the picture above of Britney??? What a gorgeous woman! I think I have my answer! Wow! Very pretty!

    oops, maybe I’m wrong!????

  17. “Fresh off their last place finish at regionals…”

LOL Loved the principal’s introduction of the glee club!

  18. Brittany did an amazing Britney….Actually in some ways better. After seeing Brittany do her versions of the Britney inspired songs, This girl could be a Pop princess too….but I guess its all about perception. Also shows how truly talented this Glee group is with much much depth. Also must say those two songs that Brittany did where HOT, Sensual, and sexual without being crude. (Especially I’m Slave 4 U) I’m gay but that was Hubba Hubba WOW Sizzle! Really enjoyed the whole episode.

  19. I actually really like this version of Toxic. The full version is pretty good. Though I will say that Will looked really out of place in that performance and the cutting back and forth made it hard to focus on the performance. Is it weird that I noticed they cut out the part of Quinn grinding on Puck from the promo?

  20. I actually didn’t like Mr. Shue in that Toxic performance. I just wanted the kids. I thought he being in it was awkward and sort of weird. I just wanted to see the Glee kids. It would have made it better. But for him, it was a great version. I loved both Brittany’s numbers. She killed Rachael’s Britney performance tonight. I am now like;; More Brit! Who knew that girl could dance like that??? I like Rachael’s voice but i am tired of every ep ending with some weepy solo from her. I really hope she isn’t the focus this season. So many more interesting characters to explore! And more voices!

  21. Only thing I must say I didn’t care for was Rachel’s “Baby one more time” because well, Rachel just is too much of a singer for such a song. It just didn’t sound right.

Totally agree. That song is so rudimentary, I can hardly believe it launched Britney Spears’ career. I still recall hearing for the first time in ’98. Oh, the waves of horror that passed over me!

  22. Mr. Schue being in the performance was SUPPOSED to be weird, that was the point of him being there.

  23. Wow, nonstop Britney, sensory overload. I like it!! Toxic is hilarious! Lol, at the hats-over-boobs dance moves.

Funny, I came across “Joan of Arcadia” in the net, was wondering what happened to Amber Tamblyn & the show. I remember loving Joan Osborne’s “One of Us” so I bought the song two nights ago. And then there it was, in their preview for next week’s episode. :)

  24. I loved the episode. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was better than I was expecting.

My favorite moment? Seeing the look between Quinn/Puck during “The Only Exception”. *squee*

  25. Not a fan of the show but I watched the ‘Slave 4 U’ clip. Wow, Heather Morris is smokin’ hot.

  26. Totally agree. That song is so rudimentary, I can hardly believe it launched Britney Spears’ career. I still recall hearing for the first time in ‘98. Oh, the waves of horror that passed over me

The video had everything to do with the success of that song, imo. Pigtails and a schoolgirl uniform anyone? ;)

  27. Check this out- Glee songs totally dominating Itunes. Have any of them reached #1 yet? Because I think it’s about to happen. And THREE versions of The Only Exception in the top 50. WOW! ( the other songs are new music Tuesday songs- Weezy sure is making the most out of jail time!)

    Toxic- Glee #2
    Only Exception- Glee #4
    Gonerhea- Lil Wayne- 7

    The Only Exception- Paramore #30 & #50
We Speak no Americano-Yolanda Be cool- #54

  28. I actually didn’t like Mr. Shue in that Toxic performance. I just wanted the kids. I thought he being in it was awkward and sort of weird.

Hee, I think it was supposed to be awkward because of the whole Matthew Morrison begged the producers not to force him to sing Britney rumor. Supposedly the producers thought the Matthew vs. Britney Perez Hilton-esque thing was funny, and they wrote Mr. Shue’s anti-Britney-ness into the script. So, yeah, awkward, but hilariously so IMO, especially the OTT instastan offering to have Mr. Shue’s baby. I’ve always appreciated Britney more for her excellent taste in choreographers and one night stands (WADE ROBSON, whassup) than her, um, “music”, but Toxic is one of my favorite guilty pleasure songs. The covers are usually better than the original, and this was another good one. (Not as good as A Static Lullabye’s cover, though. I freakin love that cover.)

Heather Morris rocked the hell out of that choreo and that snake, and oh hai Mark Kanemura!

My favorite part though was the whole AC vs. pop undertone thing they wrote into the script, and the ending with Only Exception. That was rock totally giving pop the hand and saying, whatever.

  29. one of the best shows! heather really killed it and it was great to see mark. everyone is so talented.

to me, rachel has to have a solo in every episode. her singing and emotion always turns me into one big chill. she is amazing.

    love love love finchel!

  30. Toxic ( Glee version) is now #1 on Itunes! Maybe someone can confirm this but I think this may be the first time one of the songs has hit #1.

  31. I guess I’m in the minority here. I usually enjoy “Glee,” but I didn’t like this episode at all. It was really boring and it felt forced. The musical performances were very good, but the writers must have had the week off because there was no plot at all. Sue didn’t even appear until the second half, and her objection to Britney Spears didn’t make sense after she had perviously championed Madonna.

I also hope that in the future the show doesn’t spend so much time on that annoying idiot with giant white-boy afro. He’s not funny at all.

I have never been a fan of melodramatic songs, I don’t care who is singing them. It could be my favorite artist and if it is on there CD that will be the song I will skip.

So I couldn’t agree with you more about Rachel, is she going to close every show. So the who premise of Glee is based on Rachel, not the whole Glee Club???

  33. So it’s a fake Britney in the photo?????

Yes, lol that is the Brittany (Heather Morris) on Glee. She really does look like Britney Spears in that photo. Heather was terrific! You can watch the whole thing on the internet today. Toxic was really fun.

  34. I loooooove this episode, especially Brittany’s performances.

And yeah, I echo the sentiment about Rachel closing the show every week. I’m sorry, but everyone I know HATES her. And her voice isn’t even that good and her character is really annoying. Glee will be better with less Rachel, IMO.

  35. Ok, we’re only 2 episodes into this season. Two. Plus, Rachel closed the show twice ALL of last season, and one of those times was the 2nd episode. Usually they ended on a group number. So I don’t think it’s fair to say “Rachel closes the show every week.”

She’s going to get her solos, because, whether you agree or not, most people think Lea Michele has the best voice in the cast. That being said, they still can spread songs around a little more, since obviously everyone can sing. Group numbers are always fun – I think we’ll start seeing more of those now. Probably some duets.

And, “The Only Exception” is #2 on iTunes right now…so…I don’t think too many Glee fans are sitting around this morning saying “Why’d they have to go make Rachel sing that?” Personally I bought just Toxic (I need to save money lol, you never know what’s down the road..plus then Idol).

  36. one of the best shows! heather really killed it and it was great to see mark. everyone is so talented.

to me, rachel has to have a solo in every episode. her singing and emotion always turns me into one big chill. she is amazing.

I totally agree with you. I love Rachel’s solos too. She pulls a lot of faces and her character is deliberatly ridiculous and can be very unlikeable but HELLO…she’s vying for attention and affection that she didn’t get from her mother. She’s very vulnerable and honest and I like that a lot. She always gives me chills. When she sang that Barbra Streisand song last season I was floored. The girl has pipes and LOTS of drama!!! Brittney (not Spears) looked so amazing last night singing “Slave”. How fun!

  37. Since there is much better TV on when Glee is on I don’t watch it…and after trying to watch the snippets I can understand why. This show is so bad. It seems to be all about a bunch of sorta talented mimics making buck by imitating the real thing. There is no story line or character development or interest. And the lines aren’t fresh or funny…they are over-done and trite.

The original premise of glee was great…but caricature is just not character…and glee has really lost its way for me.

  38. Darn it. Just when I give up this show they have my all-time favorite SYTYCD dancer (Mark). I so love the internet for reasons like this.

I agree exactly with everything you said…as a matter of fact I was pretty much going to post it verbatim lol.

The performances were okay and all but it’s like they’re trying to hard. Brittany’s character became less appealing after the episode, I usually love her one liners but it was all too weird. They need to come up with a better plotline than all these couples (especially since I think most of them are boring anyway), as much as I hated the pregnancy stuff last year at least it was something they could work with.

  40. The episode played like an hour long music video with commercials, but I still had tons of fun watching. I always knew Heather was the best dancer of all the girls, but man that girl has GAME!

Ready for next week’s “Grilled Cheesus” to have tons of plot and drama.

  41. I missed the episode but I enjoyed the clips. WOW who knew Brittany could move like that!!! She was awesome and what a body. And she killed me with her little lines – Finn can fly? I thought I was getting all the solos from now on. Next week I will be performing Ke$ha. LMAO!!!

  42. I really love GLEE and this ep was no exception (heh), I enjoyed just about every delicious minute of it. I’ve admired Britney Spears (the real one, not Brittany S.Pierce. WOWW, that was hysterical) for a long time and loved that the show gave me an hour to relive some of my teenage memories. She IS pop culture! ;)

I was thinking afterwards of just how much plot they did try to squeeze in last night. Maybe it wasn’t developed, but it was introduced.
-No joke, maybe I shoulda had more caffeine last week but wasn’t this the first genuine problem for Finnchel’s relationship since Regionals?? Rachel revealed that she felt more secure that they were now 2 losers in love… If I’m the best u can do, certainly u won’t leave?!
-Schue is back to pining for Emma, yet Terri the ex is trying to pull him back into her web of ridiculousness.
-Emma is in like with Carl the dentist. “Is this real life?” Yet Emma sees that Will is trying to be someone he’s not to win her back.
-Kurt helped Mr. Schue see that he needs to loosen up with the kids and trust their instincts. Maybe not grind with ’em, but HEY!?
-Finn and Artie are on the football team. Bieste will probably have to pit Finn versus Sam, the new kid, to get quarterback rank.
-Will is again on Sue Sylvester’s sh!t list, neckbrace and all.
-The newspaper kid with buttsweat (eewwww) may be Sue’s next pawn to bring down GLEE/Schue.

I’m really glad they didn’t touch Womanizer, they spared us from a Quinn solo. It took two weeks to erase Papa Don’t Preach from my brainfile.

  43. can’t believe Rachael was happy crying at the end-that was so sweet .Im pretty sure I’ll cry the next episode awwwwww.

    Glee is a masterpiece. Period.

    -luvadamlambert

Agree, I was impressed by Cory Monteith as well. His little hiccup/lip quiver thing during the Paramore solo was touching, I think it was his best acting bit in awhile. Probably the only thing from him that could be classified as above average. (And I do love the guy).
They had great one-liners, Santana stepped it up, I didn’t expect to like a guy’s version of any Britney song, but Artie did a great job with Stronger. Puck and Finn doing a body roll made MY YEAR. :)
Cheesy goodness all-around. Keep it up Ryan Murphy!

  44. WOW, that’s what I call a great episode. Brittany was hot, I mean HOOOTTT. It’s great to see secondary characters shine in their own light. Santana looks like the sexy one, but Brittany overshadowed her in Me Against The Music, she can really move and has a tremendous body.

  45. I tend to think that Glee is mostly about the music, so it makes sense to me to make the songs the main focus. Yes, plot is necessary, but as I watch each episode, I wait in anticipation for the next great song.

Lots of people, both fans and characters, hate Rachel, but I think she’s the character most can relate to. She’s insecure and makes mistakes because of that. Her insecurities are common ones; she’s jealous, and who wouldn’t be in her position? She has an incredible voice, but she knows she’s unpopular, so she works harder to come out on top. The good thing about her, other than her voice, is that she’s so driven, yet that’s a quality that people often put down. We all think Brittany is so cool; she has her ridiculous, funny comments, but when we praise her, we turn her into a role model. Cluelessness is put on a pedestal, but ambition is scorned. I have a feeling that we’ll see Rachel grow up and become more likable; she’s a dynamic character.

On a lighter note, I want to hear John Stamos sing! Can he please do a Beach Boy’s song?

  46. The title of this episode is absolutely perfect. It is a tribute to Britney and a chance to capitalize in the (I think) unexpected popularity of Brittany. It worked great in both levels.
I don’t think it is a “jump-the-shark” situation, but it felt like a disruption in the flow of the show. I think it worked.
