Dancing With The Stars Season 9 – Top 13 Results – Tom DeLay To Quit Due to Stress Fractures

UPDATE: The producers decided to go with a double elimination this week, in light of the departure of Tom DeLay, due to injury.

Debi Mazar and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were eliminated. And, as expected, Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke will be leaving the show. Doctors advised Delay to leave due to stress fractures in both his feet.

I can’t say I’m sorry to see DeLay leave. But he should have bowed out yesterday, before viewers wasted time voting for him. Ugh.

According to press reports, Tom DeLay will announce that he’s dropping out of the competition on tonight’s results show.

via EW:

Former Republican congressman and current ‘Star’ Tom DeLay will announce his departure from season 9 of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars on tonight’s 9 p.m. results show, according to E!’s Malkin and People. Stress fractures in both of DeLay’s feet had recently turned serious enough for the show’s producers and medical staff to advise him not to perform in Monday night’s show; DeLay danced the samba with a sparkly elephant on the back of his jacket anyway. An ABC rep declined to comment to EW.

There’s no word yet how the producers are planning to handle DeLay’s departure. There might be no elimination this week, or the producers could turn this week into one of the planned double elimination shows. I’ll update this post when I know more.

  1. My favorites are Cheryl Burke and she’s out, Alec Mazo and he is still looking very hot, Dimitry and he has a dynamite partner this season, and Derek who is at this moment in jeopardy. I am hoping none of my favorite guys get eliminated. I like Donny Osmond, too.

  2. Watched SYTYCD instead and forgot to switch over to see who got eliminated (besides Tom).

  3. I figured Maks and/or Cheryl were out when they got that lovely spotlight dance together. *is bummed, especially for Maks, that poor Debi never got a grip on her nerves*

  4. But he should have bowed out yesterday, before viewers wasted time voting for him

    .

I totally agree. That seems kind of unfair. I’m probably still in the minority of liking Tom though.

  5. I don’t agree with the fact that Tom should have bowed out yesterday if he didn’t want to. I’m not a fan of the guy or his politics, but what harm was there in Tom dancing last night? Any person voting for him knew that the guy already had two stress fractures in his feet and wouldn’t be able to dance much longer, if last another week. That was their choice.

We’re also not talking AI here where people power vote over several phone lines for hours on end. Here you get a set number of votes and it’s pretty easy to get all your votes in no more than a minute or two.

Beyond that, I’m willing to bet the production didn’t want a decision made last night. I realize the show ended up eliminating another couple anyway, but if they had announced Tom going home last night there would have been no drama. The show thrives on the cheese and the drama.

Besides, Tom practiced that dance all last week and Cheryl spent the time to choreograph and teach it to Tom, so maybe he felt performing was a way of not letting Cheryl down.

  6. Sad to see Maks and Debi go. I know she wasn’t the best dancer, but you could tell she wanted to be there. I like her. Plus, Maks is hot.

Glad Tom is gone. Don’t care how it happened.

I wish Vince Van Patten and that bitchy model had gotten the boot.

  7. I only caught a couple of the performances (via MJ’s–I did not watch the show), but there seems to be a serious lack of talent amongst the celebs this season. I only keep up with the show via recaps–I can’t bear all the shenanigans and rehashing on the show. But I don’t seem hear a lot of buzz this season. Tom Delay? Really? Okie dokie.

  8. MJ,

Longtime lurker, primarily for the Idol stuff, but also into politics, and yes a big fan and admirer of Tom DeLay.

Is there some reason why his name is being spelled/typed as “Delay?” It’s not a huge deal, but it seems like it might be intentional. I like the fact that you have always strived to be fair in coverage to all the Idols, whether they were your personal favorites or not, so I just am wondering about why he isn’t getting the extra capital letter in his last name, like anyone from Diana DeGarmo to Drake LaBry gets here.

In any event, congrats to Tom DeLay on a great run! Especially as the oldest contestant by a good amount and probably the person doing something most unlike anything they had ever done in their career.

Also, he has continued his streak of never losing an election nor any sort of voting competition (such as DWTS.)

  9. It hasn’t been fair to those who love both DWTS and SYTYCD, but at least MJ provides the video presentations. Thank you!

I am happy to see Tom DeLay leave the show, but I will miss Cheryl. This was a great time to turn this week into one of the planned double elimination shows. Yes, there was more drama to handle it the way the show did.

Maks is a wonderful dancer with an amazing body, but at times his ego can be annoying!

I have found myself supporting the former SYTYCD stars. It seems like I “know” them personally. All three are terrific dancers and this could make for a GOOD competition.

  10. Tom DeLay grew on me.

I find it inspirational how he went on a dance show where half the cast including his dance partner probably hates him and he was made a fool of, and yet he always kept positive and happy about it. From Majority Leader to DWTS’s comedic character, but he embraced it.

There you can see the confidence and go-get-it attitude that got him such a successful career in politics, regardless of whether he made good decisions with his power when he had it.

  11. i’m glad DeLay is out. hope he gets convicted for money laundering soon. and as for maks, i don’t know, he’s a really great dancer but personality wise he’s a douche from his fat comments about lacey & cheryl to his “i can’t be friends with karina”. maybe he should try being professional and then he might last longer in the competition.

  12. maybe he should try being professional and then he might last longer in the competition

If he were to stop being a diva, all of the female fans infatuated with him would lose interest. Maks is there to be a Maks. Jonathan–as close as I can get to Maks’ opposite– is there to be a Jonathan. You need the hot jerk AND the kind, patient, professional teacher, to make the show interesting and varied. That said though, I think Maks is losing some of his spark. I can’t explain it, but he just isn’t exciting the way he used to be, and I never even was a Maks fangirl.

I’m just going to assume your aren’t serious, and leave it at that. lol.

  14. Did Maks really call Cheryl and Lacey fat? Really???? They’re gorgeous! As is every other woman on that show. From pretty petite little Chelsie to long-limbed Edyta – gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! What must he think of some of his partners then? Did he think Mel B. was fat also? No one will want to dance with him if they think he’s belittling them.

    What a prick!

  15. Jonathan’“as close as I can get to Maks’ opposite’“ is there to be a Jonathan. You need the hot jerk AND the kind, patient, professional teacher, to make the show interesting and varied. That said though, I think Maks is losing some of his spark. I can’t explain it, but he just isn’t exciting the way he used to be, and I never even was a Maks fangirl.

I’d like a change-up, please. Let Jonathan be the hot guy with the strong partner for a change! Perhaps Maks has lost some spark. IMO he was robbed of a win with Mel B.
Tom DeLay may be the worst person in the world, but he wasn’t the worst dancer on this show. I think he was entitled to dance as long as he felt able. I’ll miss Cheryl. This years celebrities are not really good dancers, so to me, this season is one of the least interesting.
I’ll still watch, though. For Louie and Chelsie and I’m looking forward to see Sabrina again. (Another person who was robbed).

  16. glad delay is gone, ugh, dont have to see that hip thrust again! Sad about Maks but Debi, who I liked at first but her ole sourpuss just did him in I think, he looked crushed to be leaving so soon. Lovin little Louie and Chelsea, Donny, Natalie and Kelly –

“”Did Maks really call Cheryl and Lacey fat? Really????””

He did? Where does it say that? and if so, that is not very nice at all!

  17. ” Did Maks really call Cheryl and Lacey fat? Really????’ ”

He did? Where does it say that? and if so, that is not very nice at all!

He said it last year some time. Cheryl has definitely put on weight since she started on the show. Lacey has always been the way she is.

Here is the US Weekly excerpt (it references an earlier TV Guide story)…

The professional dancers on DWTS are not pleased that Cheryl Burke and Lacey Schwimmer packed on a few pounds this season.

‘If you want to gain weight, it’s your prerogative,’ dancer Louis van Amstel says in the newest issue of TV Guide. ‘We all put on weight because there was no summer tour,’ he adds. ‘But you have to deal with the consequences.’

Pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy is also complaining.

‘When I first saw these women this season, I said, ‘Guys, you know the camera adds 10 pounds,” he says. ”You have to do something about this.’ Burke and Schwimmer have gotten slimmer since the season’s premiere, but van Amstel says the damage is done.

‘[People] look at this show to be inspired and think, ‘If I just work hard enough, I can look like that,” he says. ‘If they watch someone who’s dancing her butt off and she’s still heavy, they can be discouraged.

‘You have to take responsibility,’ he adds.

  18. What a hateful site this turned into. I used to read it often during American Idol.

Maybe if DWTS didn’t do the same thing and become hateful about a non issue for the show – politics, more people would tune in. Democrats have used that midas touch and destroyed this show too.

Just what does Delay’s politics have to do with anything. Or for that matter, snide remarks from judges about Palin? I guess THE ONE has ordered you all to be so hateful – you know – get in their faces. Maybe you all can get ABC to get the newest Democrat victims POlanski and Letterman to participate so you can cheer your kind of people.

I watched clips of Delay and he looked like he was enjoying himself dancing. How dare he!

Way to go MJ hosting a web full of haters – you included. Way to go ABC you managed to tell 50% of your audience to go to hell. Watch the ratings drop on this show dramatically.

  19. I’m really sorry that we won’d see Maks or Cheryl any more this season. Well, I guess they still have their professional dancer numbers each week. Maybe we’ll see more of them then. I liked their duet a lot this past week with Queen Latifah. They are two of the pros that I really like. Still rooting for Alec, but his partner sure is tall plus there is just something very likeable about Donny Osmond. I am still going to tune in and enjoy the dancing.
