Daily Numbers Thread: 09/05/17

Today’s thread is brought to you by the numbers 4 and 46K.

With Monday being a holiday, the Billboard charts were not published yesterday. They did reveal the top 10 Albums and Taylor Swift’s numbers.

On the BB200 this week, there are 7 debuts in the top 10. Debuting at 4th is Fifth Harmony’s “Fifth Harmony”. Their previous album “7/27” also debuted at 4th, but with significantly higher numbers (74K, 49K in sales). The difference is likely due to the sagging market for albums and not having as successful a lead single.

Over on the single’s front, Billboard announces that Taylor Swift is number one. “Look What You Made Me Do” topped the streaming chart (84.4M) and the sales chart (353K). Those are the top streaming and sales weeks of 2017. It’s the second highest stream count ever, being beaten only by Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” which was a youtube meme. Kelly Clarkson gets a mention in the article because she still holds the record for the largest jump to number one (“My Life Would Suck Without You” jumped 97th to 1st). Taylor also becomes the first woman to top the Hot 100 this year. “Look What You Made Me Do” is the first single with a female as the lead artist to top the Hot 100 since Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” in August of last year.
