  1. Thanks for posting these clips. Crystal sounds great. I am a bit dismayed that she is taking styling tips from David Archuleta.

  2. Crystal sounds great like usual. So does that mean ” Speak now” will also be on her album? I know she recorded ” Farmers daughter” and her husband tweeted about Crystal wanting the song to be her first single, so I’m sure it will definitely be on her album.

  3. Wow. She sounds incredible. I guess we know what two of the songs will be on her album! I actually dig the flannel with rolled up sleeves; it fits her vibe to a tee.

  4. Looks to me, that Crystal will break the mold of all previous AI debuts. Many solo originals, one producer, organic (not over produced) etc, something that will come very close in representing her true self. Can´t wait to hear the end result.

  5. I actually dig the flannel with rolled up sleeves; it fits her vibe to a tee.

Same here, but I really couldn´t care less what she wears, as she isn´t trying to sell some “made-up” artificial persona. For her, it´s all about the music, not the dressing room.

  6. Sorry not diggin the flannel. She does look like a farmers daughter!

  7. I agree eriko. I hope this bodes well for future artists coming from AI. They always say ‘be true to yourself’, ‘make a song your own’ but when they are done with the show they throw u at the same pop writers n producers. That’s alright if ur thing is pop, but if u r not it’s really disheartening to see them being forced to sing such songs. Guidance n help is fine but don’t u think it should be from someone who writes or sings similar songs?? I sincerely hope the future cohorts of AI puts albums that represent themselves truly. Maybe then the people outside the bubble- radio djs, industry people n public in general will take these talented artists more seriously, JMO ofcos

  8. I think that Crystal’s attire suits her. I like “Speak Now”, but it sounds very countryish. So far, Crystal seems very different from any previous Idol. It will be interesting to see what kind of album Crystal/Jive release and how well it does critically and commercially.

  9. I think Crystal’s album will probably have critical success, and maybe commercial success will follow once she gets more promo. The producer working on her album seems to work with indie/rock type artists, so I’m sure her album won’t be overproduced or pop sounding, but will be more folk/rock/ and blues. I’m also expecting to hear some countryish type songs.

  10. as she isn´t trying to sell some “made-up” artificial persona.

Why is this considered such a “good” thing…and why looking like you have just stepped out of a feed store proof that it is all about the music. I will never understand the correlation between looking like a washer woman and having musical integraty. Are all the people in the world that enjoy good grooming and putting on the ritz and dressing up and being respectful to others by taking the time and effort to make themselves look nice and presentable to be considered talentless hacks in the music business.

I guess my dear mother was so off base when she taught me that trying to look my best and dressing for the occasion was one way to influence people. And once upon a time Entertainers felt that selling a bit of “dream dust” along with their music was a good thing for their audience. It took them away from their dreary jobs and work clothes for a few moments and gave them something grand to look at and aspire towards.

And, for me, fun personas with some “stardom” trappings just adds to my pleasure when I see someone perform. Boy do I miss those 30s movies when it was all about the beautiful and the glamorous…stuff that made my daydreams fun. Now all I seem to get is Singers who are intent on shunning the glitzy world they have worked so hard to become a member of.

  11. Sorry not diggin the flannel. She does look like a farmers daughter!

Well she is :) The key words here are “look like” People are always trying to “look like” instead of just “being” who ever they are. Must be liberating to feel good in your own skin and not worry about what others think or say.

I wonder how some of the celebrities look like when they´ve removed all of the artificial stuff they´re wearing. I like my juice 100% pure, not 50% artificial ingredients :)

  12. Well I like the honesty of Crystal, not trying to be something she’s not. Some folk’s are not going to like that, but I’m betting there are a lot of people that will. Just my opinion.

  13. Why is this considered such a “good” thing

Why is this considered such a “bad” thing? Why even label it as good or bad? It just is.

  14. Well, I think it is disrespectful of Artists to show up for a charity gig in their do housework clothes. People took the time and effort to put together this occasion, shouldn’t people performing be respectful enough to them and their audience to take some time in their own personal grooming.

  15. The nice thing about Crystal’s fashion sense is that she does know how to glam it up when she needs to–I don’t think she would go to a major red carpet event looking like Kurt Cobain. But if this is going to be one of her stage looks that’s fine with me. She gave a little back story to Speak Now. It was about about her and Brian. That makes sense–they must have been a couple when they recorded “Mason” singing to the baby but then she went home. Glad they were able to get it worked out!

  16. Crystal’s look fits her, Madonna’s looks changed over the years but they fit her, Carrie Underwood has her look, etc. Fans will be fans of who they connect with for whatever reason, but either having a look or not doesn’t have anything to do with whether music is real or ‘organic’ (a term I loathe) or not. It’s just what people like. And one can argue a lack of look is just as much a look as full glamour. It’s just a look :)

  17. Why is this considered such a “good” thing…and why looking like you have just stepped out of a feed store proof that it is all about the music.

Because dressing in Top 40 hooker attire is much more appropriate for a folk singer, right? Listen, “slut chic” may work for Katie Perry and Lady Gaga, but for Crystal this look is representative of who she is as a person, i.e. unpretentious, down to earth, and unapologetic to those who want her to be something she’s not.

  18. Everyone has their own style of dress which is the way it should be. But like Tess said above just because she doesn’t dress up doesn’t make her more real of a person than someone else who may take more pride in their appearance.

You don’t have to dress to the nines but you should at least dress better than looking like you just plowed the fields.

  19. It’s just a look. :)

I totally agree. It’s about feeling comfortable in a “look” and not valuing any one look above the other. I don’t regard Crystal as lacking in personal grooming (i.e. she never looks “dirty” or “grungy” to me), which is a different issue than different attires for different artists. I remember on AI, Crystal once dressed up in a gown and wore heels, and I just had the impression that she wasn’t comfortable in that “look”, whereas that would have been a fit for some other artists. I like that Crystal’s wardrobe reflects who she is, and am fine with it, because it seems to be genuine and not an artificial attempt to create a “look” for the sake of projecting an image.

Everyone has their own style of dress which is the way it should be. But like Tess said above just because she doesn’t dress up doesn’t make her more real of a person than someone else who may take more pride in their appearance.

I agree. I don’t value one “look” over another and don’t regard artists who dress down as any more authentic than those who feel more comfortable dressing up. To me, it’s all about what fits an artist and one “rule” doesn’t apply to everyone.

  20. Reminder:

How many times do I have to remind people NOT to question the motives of posters or personally attack their opinions? Will be monitoring, deleting and putting folks in moderation as necessary.

  21. I think she looks great. I get tired of singing T & A shows all the time.

  22. I love Speak Now. I also think Crystal looks fine. This wasn’t some black tie ball lol, it was just a concert.

  23. You can find successful entertainers that are dressed in costumes most of the time and some that are never seen in anything fancier than jeans and a wrinkled shirt. There are no rules to this kind of thing. Just as long as you connect to an audience that appreciates you in the end, its all good IMO. I don’t even know what there is to argue about.

I heard Crystal singing Farmers Daughter on the radio this morning… she was fantastic! Caught me completely off guard.

  24. Wow I still don’t think Crystal has a country voice but Speak Now really does sound country when it’s acoustic like that! It isn’t the most original song in the world but it’s very pretty. Call me crazy but you know what else it kind of makes me think of? You know that song Save The Last Dance For Me? Speak Now reminds me of that.

  25. tinawina:
I heard Crystal singing Framers Daughter on the radio this morning… she was fantastic! Caught me completely off guard.

:) i remember that time, umm holywood week (gosh seems like long long time now). btw which station was this? i dont think i hrd anywhere else they play her originals except toledo…

For those people who think she came out from a dumpster heres a pic:
    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=449770543235

I think she looks appropriately dressed. she has stressed about comfy clothes which works for her i guess (and the fans don’t mind that). everything here seems to be taken out of context sigh* i guess that comes w territory. n thats that…

Absolutely loved the changes she did on both songs especially speak now. Such a lovely song which I think a lot of us can relate at one point in our lifetime (or in my case a dozen lol). Anybody else think that if they allowed originals on AI on Shania Twain week she would have sung that song instead? lol, shame on Brian for not manning up at that time…m jus kidding, must’ve been ill timed for both of ’em. well it all worked out in the end eh :) I love that crystal doesnt have a mask between her and audience…makes it tt much more enjoyable.

  26. She gave a little back story to Speak Now. It was about about her and Brian. That makes sense–they must have been a couple when they recorded “Mason” singing to the baby but then she went home. Glad they were able to get it worked out!

I actually wondered about this. Were you there last night? I’m sooo sad that I didn’t even know Crystal was in Dayton until too late. Sob.

Maybe I would have been offended by how she dressed though. LOL. ;)

She sds really good on the vids.

  27. Tess, you were raised differently than Crystal. Her parents were dirt poor bikers and they probably didn’t have much concern for what they were wearing as long as they were wearing something. Also, after Crystal left home at 17, she was living out of a suitcase (if she even had one) and at one point out of a van. She had to keep things simple. I believe that’s also the reason for the dreadlock hairstyle.

Old habits die hard and something tells me that finally having extra money and a bathroom mirror aren’t going to cause Crystal to dress much differently. I’m just glad to see her wearing a top with color instead of all black. :)

I would personally like to see her dress up a bit more (in her style, NOT evening gowns & stilettos lol)and wear a little makeup when she’s performing but it isn’t that important to me. I’m a fan because of her voice, her music and her character.

  28. I think Crystal is pretty and I would be proud to take her home to meet Mom any day. She is only female on S9 I can say that about.

  29. Were you there last night? I’m sooo sad that I didn’t even know Crystal was in Dayton until too late. Sob

I think you can hear abt it partly on the video Speak Now intro. Also it doesnt seem like she and brian were a couple that time but there was definitely an attraction between them. Michael Teach from CAU, a long time friend of both said it was bound to happen one way or another tt they were meant to be. Their closest friends seem to be happy about how it turned out :)

Crystal is such an articulate songwriter. Speak Now is just brilliant and m so glad Jive is putting this song on her debut. It is such an emotional roller coaster highlighting the different stages of a break up. The first part it seems like she is fed-up of his games then she becomes frustrated and angry with defeat and finally she comes to her senses and pleads that she wants him badly as much as he wants her. I normally dont listen to the words or lyrics in songs cos as musicians we tend to overlook them and focus more on the melodies, but i am v impressed by how much her songs keep me longing for the meanings. well tts JMO. Ok i will stop the gibberish now. You can check the lyrics here and have your own take on it if its ya kinda thing (or not).

  30. Well, I think it is disrespectful of Artists to show up for a charity gig in their do housework clothes. People took the time and effort to put together this occasion, shouldn’t people performing be respectful enough to them and their audience to take some time in their own personal grooming.

I think they are grateful when artists give their time to support their charity. Personally, if I thought a charity worried about how contributors dressed, I´d be skeptical of the legitimacy of the charity. After all, charity events are about everything else than “looks” (hopefully) not that Crystal didn´t look good.

Like negativo said, would Lee wearing a hooded sweater or Casey a similar flannel shirt also be questioned?

  31. What I love most about Crystal’s original songs is how deeply personal and open they are about her life; warts and all. She gives us a window into her soul, and makes us the listener feel she’s truly sharing her world with us. Such a powerful connection between the artist and the art is very, very rare in today’s vapid world of formula Pop 40. I truly admire her courage and honesty in addition to her talent.

  32. She gives us a window into her soul, and makes us the listener feel she’s truly sharing her world with us.

ITA. For me, it needs careful listening without distractions before it can be fully appreciated. After a few of those, it´s easier to also appreciate it under other circumstances

  33. Holy Toledo is up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s3q0QG4_QE

The most impressive thing about crystal for me is how well she relates to the emotions and the feeling of the song. Its like she takes every single word to the core emotion behind it, which is a very rare talent amongst artists nowadays. The anger, the frustration, the happiness, the sadness she can relate any of those in her performances and deliver it to near perfection. It really comes from a very honest place.

    Eriko:
ITA. For me, it needs careful listening without distractions before it can be fully appreciated

I agree the crowd need to be in silence to appreciate her songs, which i might add the crowd in this show seems to get :)

I think Crystal is pretty and I would be proud to take her home to meet Mom any day. She is only female on S9 I can say that about

I’m a heterosexual female and I would totally take Didi home.

  35. To get back on topic, I think Crystal looks fine. I haven’t seen the vids, but I wouldn’t expect a lot of Gucci & spangles at anything Melissa Ethridge puts together. (and that’s a compliment)

  36. To get back on topic, I think Crystal looks fine. I haven’t seen the vids, but I wouldn’t expect a lot of Gucci & spangles at anything Melissa Ethridge puts together. (and that’s a compliment)

The above charity event wasn´t with Melissa. During the Pink okt. fest, Crystal wore a black elegant dress suit

  37. Love Crystal – she’s absolutely wonderful. She’s actually the first AI contestant who really caught my attention since AI3! Very talented. Thanks for the clips!

  38. At the Idol concert I went to, Crystal had a lot of screaming fans when she was on stage. Also had a lot of signs made for her.

I think people tend to feel concerts are a scream-acceptable event, but probably not charity events.

Also, I think plaid shirts for women is kind of a popular look right now.

  39. Just noticed “On The Run” got posted…. Thanks, MJ! Now that song definitely has some country-folk flavors….almost a little touch of the early Judds sound. Man, I am really loving what I’m hearing so far!!

  40. Eriko:

The above charity event wasn´t with Melissa. During the Pink okt. fest, Crystal wore a black elegant dress suit

Ohhhhh. See, this is what happens when you can’t watch the videos. Well, anyway, she looks good in red. :)

  41. Reminder:

Please keep the posts focused on Crystal’s performance? I’m deleting all off-topic posts.

  42. Bold prediction:

I’ve heard it before, but this performance of Speak Now really got me thinking.

I think on her album it’s going to be a piano “ballad,” maybe not exactly a ballad per se but kinda a bluesy change of tempo sort of song. And I think it’s going to end up being released as a single – not the first one, but I think it will be one. And it’s going to be Crystal’s breakout song (think “You Were Meant for Me” by Jewel, I could see this song being very very similar). Other people have mentioned how the lyrics are so relateable to almost everyone. I could see it crossing over to several genres of radio.

  43. Bold Prediction 2:

    1. Title of album: “Farmer’s Daughter”
    2. First single: “Farmer’s Daughter”

  44. Bold Prediction 3:

She keeps the “fuckin’ sick and tired” line intact, and the radio stations bleep it.

  45. Bold Prediction 2:

    1. Title of album: “Farmer’s Daughter”
    2. First single: “Farmer’s Daughter”

I could see it. I’d said before I didn’t know if they’d make that the title of the album because it’d sound country and I didn’t figure Jive would want anything that sounds country. But I’m getting the feeling that Jive is going to basically release the album and let it sink or swim on its own merits, plus whatever Crystal does herself to promote it (touring, public appearances, etc). I have a feeling they may just put her success more or less on her, and if she fails, they’ll be quick to pull the plug. Thing is, that could work out perfectly for her.

After listening to all 4 recordings, I can hear influences of co-writers. It’s subtle, but there’s changes to a few chord progressions (especially in Farmer’s Daughter) and a couple melody tweaks here and there. Compared to how she’d originally written them though, they’re like 98% the same. Something tells me that most of her songs will be “co-writes” but the biggest influence the co-writers had will be in the full arrangements – what they record in the studio. Not that Crystal wouldn’t have had input there but I’m thinking that’s where the real collaboration took place. The lyrics and melodies I think are going to be almost entirely Crystal’s, probably for the whole album except for any songs she might do by another writer entirely.

How soon will Crystal’s first single actually be coming out? It seems like a long time until “mid-December” but Lee’s first single has been revealed and I guess played by a few stations now already too, and it sounds like Crystal’s album will be not quite a month after his so could we be talking 2 weeks or something before we might hear word of her first single?

  46. She keeps the “fuckin’ sick and tired” line intact, and the radio stations bleep it.

Lol. I don’t know. I almost feel like this is one of those minor issues that really, she should give in on and if nothing else for the single version, change it. A pop station might bleep the word in an established artist’s single, but I don’t know if HAC (which will probably be where her music will be going mostly) will do the same. I could see some stations especially in more conservative areas just passing over it, because the bleep doesn’t hide the intent, and some people are really that anal retentive.

Not that I feel it should even be an issue, but that’s another story.

  47. Somewhat related (because it’s about Crystal)…her album is #92 on the Amazon top 100 albums, based on pre-orders.

And really I still believe that most of her fans will buy in person, not online.

  48. negativo/eriko

I would like to commend you both on your postings. Sometimes humorous, sometimes profound, alway insightful! Thank you both for your comments, I’ve enjoyed reading them. And it appears that Crystal is fortunate to have fans like both of you, “Got her back!”

And as for as Crystal’ attire, I really appreciate Crystal for her clean, decent, and less revealing look. i.e. Not wearing her undies over her outer garments or performing in her underware. If I wanted a peek show, I’ll go to a strip club.

It’s okay if some people are entertained by the Hair-helmet and Meat-dress look, the visual experience the American Music Industry has become. “The Bride of Frankenstein in her Li’l Abner boon-dockers, blood drooling out of her mouth while swigging the pop culture Kool-Aid, and riding off in the sunset on her one trick pony!” It’s not for everyone!

Crystal’ music has spoiling me and it’s getting harder and harder to listen to pop radio anymore. The lyrics to Bowersox’ original songs are genius and her voice is beyond description. Listening for just a few moments you don’t even think about what she is wearing. I pre-ordered 2 of Crystal’ CDs, one for my sterio and one for my car. I was going to wait to hear them first but then I thought about it and realized, “Crystal’ CD, can’t be not Great!”

I just hope that Farmers Daughter, Holy Toledo, Don’t Leave, Speak Now, Cry No More, On The Run, Finally Got It Right, Saved by Grace, and Sandman are all on the album. Have I left anything out here?

One last thought. Crystal said she has a cache of approximately 120 songs and she has given the aboved mentioned songs basically away for free. How great do you think the songs are going to be that Crystal is going to sell us?

Mozart, wow you have quite the ear to pickup on these subtle changes, especially since the sound quality is bad, so much echo in that hall. Anyway, if any of these songs end up on the final product, I don´t believe any of them will have a co-write to them. They´re Crystal all the way, hers and hers alone. Anything else would just be so wrong and screwed up IMO. She´s probably trying different things with them in the studio along with her producer, but that wouldn´t make him a co-write, surely.

Just before AI, Chicago Underground recorded a 40 min podcast that´s free for downloading. Lots of chit chat, but the 4 or 5 songs there, have the best audio quality I´ve heard when performing originals. “Saved by Grace” heard in this quality gives you goosebumps, you or anyone else interested should download if you haven´t already, and listen in a stereo or ipod or good computer speakers. To download go to:

    http://www.chicagoacoustic.net/podcasts/download?file=podcasts/Crystal_Bowersox.mp3

mj, this is a perfectly legal download if you´re wondering

  50. Interesting about Crystal being at #92. Lee is at #172. Now I’m not fanning any flames here because I don’t believe that’s ANY indication of how they will sell, and I don’t think they’re in competition with each other.

But it does indicate that there is strong interest in Crystal, especially since the PR channels haven’t been working overtime on information about her album.

  51. I just hope that Farmers Daughter, Holy Toledo, Don’t Leave, Speak Now, Cry No More, On The Run, Finally Got It Right, Saved by Grace, and Sandman are all on the album.

Only those! You´re too modest, I´m shooting for a double CD release at least! :) Yeah, she has plenty to choose from, but I´m hoping for a few I haven´t heard before that will surprise

  52. Lightspeed’s list sounds good except I fully expect kiss ya. It really rocks and is usually her closer. Fantastic version at golden gate park on you tube.

  53. Interesting about Crystal being at #92.

A few days ago, she went all the way up to #39. I have no idea if or what kind of indicator that is regarding her fan base out there. But hopefully this is a good sign

Gray Haired Rock Star immediately comes to mind.

  55. Not surprised by Amazon ranking on sales. (Update: Both out of Top100 Bestseller now — Crystal #108, Lee #169.) Crystal have more older fans and they tend to buy hardcopies. I think the ranking will reverse when it comes to digital sales.

  56. Mozart, wow you have quite the ear to pickup on these subtle changes, especially since the sound quality is bad, so much echo in that hall. Well I tend to actually listen more to music than I do to lyrics (although once in a while an artist’s lyrics catch my attention, and Crystal’s have as well), so yeah I notice little things like that. And while, yeah, they’re “her” songs originally I’m sure they’re recording them in a different instrumentation – if someone else comes up with that instrumentation I’m sure they’ll list them with writing credits. Not a big deal really in the end, and I doubt Crystal will mind all that much either. Of course, I see no reason that Crystal herself couldn’t come up with those arrangements but I’ll bet we’re going to see some collaboration involving her pre-Idol material – it won’t sound hardly any different except for having expanded instrumentation, but that addition will be where the “co-write” took place.

A few days ago, she went all the way up to #39. I have no idea if or what kind of indicator that is regarding her fan base out there. But hopefully this is a good sign

It’s certainly not a bad sign if she’s showing up on those charts. I’d just skimmed through the list but I noticed that the albums I was seeing on the list at least all had titles if they were pre-release – many of them were already released even. I kinda laughed because the title is just “TBA.” There’s at least a picture now but it’s just the one that was used for her single coming off AI.

  57. I just hope that Farmers Daughter, Holy Toledo, Don’t Leave, Speak Now, Cry No More, On The Run, Finally Got It Right, Saved by Grace, and Sandman are all on the album. Have I left anything out here?

Just Want to Love Ya Before I Leave. I really want to hear that be the final song on the album – it’s a real tear jerker. A re-recording but done exactly like the demo would just sound beautiful. As I said, I don’t usually get that into lyrics, but it’s one of those songs I can’t even imagine people not getting drawn into…

…We are all just moments, passing by one another in this life, and sometimes these moments find each other, don’t dare let that go…

Sorry not diggin the flannel. She does look like a farmers daughter!

omg poor Kris has anyone told him yet?

seriously for a concert it really doesn’t matter but I do agree that as a charity event MAYBE it would have been respectful to dress up just a tad more, not talking heels and mini dress but a nicer top or something.

    Re: the music
Plesantly surprised didn’t much care for what I heard on idol but this stuff isn’t bad….very 60’s hippie.

  59. I think Crystal is really pretty-she looks great in dreads. I understand that she wants to maintain an alternative vibe, but that doesn’t mean she has to wear dowdy clothes, like she did on the Idol tour. I loved her wedding dress-maybe that designer could make some things for her when she does want to dress up.

  60. Reminder:

This is the THIRD time I’ve had to come into this post today to remind people to DIAL BACK THE DEFENSIVENESS and lay off the personal attacks. So, that’s it. I’m closing the thread.
