Boy Band Episode 6 Soundtrack Night Recap and Live Blog (VIDEOS)

Boyband episode 6 airs tonight on ABC at 8 pm ET. With Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), Emma Bunton (Spice Girls’ Baby Spice) and Timbaland producer, songwriter, rapper), as “architects”  hopeful 14 to 24-year-old singers compete to become a member of what producers hope to be the next great boyband. Rita Ora hosts.

It’s “Soundtrack Night.” The remaining 13 boy band hopefuls perform iconic songs from the greatest movies of our time. Then we follow three new bands as they learn new songs, new harmonies and continue to build new bonds with their bandmates.

Gee. We’re already halfway through this thing. TWO singers will be eliminated tonight.

First up, the Top 13 take the stage for a group number, “Earned It” by The Weeknd from 50 Shades of Grey. The violin playing dude is performing with the string section to open. The guys wear casual suits with ties untied and buttons undone as they warble through the performance. All the remaining boys are teens, by the way.

Host Rita Ora is THISCLOSE to a wardrobe malfunction,. Shiny boobs for the win.

Leveled, All In and Undivided are this week’s groups. No bands are safe tonight! One boy from each group will be put up for elimination. Two boys go home.

Music director Tim Davis is on stage for some reason. Oh. Video package of “behind the scenes shenanigans.” It’s a “Breakfast Club” takeoff set to Simple Minds “Don’t You Forget About Me.” Judges and professionals up to no good….or something. Rita Ora is Ally Shields. Other than that, I’ve got nothing.

All In – Brady Tutton, Marcus Pendleton, Sergio Calderon, Mikey Jimenez, Chance Perez – How Far I’ll Go from Mauna – Nick coaches the boys on how to play individual “roles.” IT’S VERY IMPORTANT he stresses. There must be a “Sensitive” one, a “Bad Boy,” a “Cute one” etcetera. OUCH THAT KEY CHANGE didn’t go so well. Throwing these kids together and rehearsing them for a week doesn’t turn up great performances. Rita keeps gushing about how the girls in the audience are going crazy. Sure that’s all spontaneous. “That’s how you start off with box office hits!” says Nick. He calls Chance a “hero.” Aw. Somebody from the audience brings Chance’s little girl, Brooklyn, to him on stage. Emma says they made the song their own. She feels Sergio “smashed it.” Emma calls out Marcus for the “crack” in his voice. Timbaland calls Brady the most “technical” singer in the competition, but says he needs to be more soulful.

ASTEROID SONG IS NEXT I REPEAT ASTEROID SONG IS NEXT.

Undivided – Devin Hayes, Drew Ramos, Andrew Butcher, Jaden Gray – Don’t Want to Miss a Thing from Armageddon – Emma mentors the group. Jaden is blowing the rest of these guys off the stage. He’s the only singer with any charisma. No comparison. Honestly, someone with a hook should enter stage right and pull everyone else off. “YOU HAVE PLANETS ON YOUR STAGE,” gushes Rita.  Calm down girl. It’s just the solar system. “I didn’t want to close my eyes, I didn’t want to miss anything,” says Nick. Erm. He calls out Andrew Butcher’s stage presence “You were outperformed by the others,” he says. Emma tells Jaden that he’s found himself. She also compliments Devin. “You fully committed to being a vocalist.” Timbaland agrees. He tells Devin that “He’s killing it.” Whoop I think Andrew’s in trouble…

Leveled – Cam Jackson, Andrew Bloom, J Hype, Michael Conor – See You Again from Furious 7 – Timbaland mentors. J Hype has been working on his vocals. He was almost eliminated last week. But since there’s rapping in this tune, he might squeak by again. Andrew has a nice falsetto, and the rap is solid. But otherwise, this performance is bland. Cam is woefully off key. Nick felt the boys connected. He compliments Andrew’s voice, although he’s still a little stiff. Emma thought the song was in the wrong range for Cam. She feels there’s a “bit of a barrier.” Timbaland compliments J Hype for hanging in there.

RESULTS.

Bottom 3 from All in: Mikey Jimenez. From Undivided: Andrew Butcher. From Leveled: Cam Jackson. Mikey’s bottom 3 appearance seems  to be a little controversial. There is BOOING when Nick insists that the others were better.

OK. It’s time to vote. Go to ABC.com/Boyband

Andrew Butcher and Cam Jackson are ELIMINATED. Mikey Jimenez is SAFE. That was predictable.

Next week: It’s “Break Up” week and Boyz II Men perform.
