Today’s theme is Billboard Charts. There are 7 billion BB Charts, so if your favourite on the “Top 50 Shopping Mall Songs” chart missing, please feel free to post it. Sadly, it seems that all the fine folks at BB are currently at the Mall making sure that the Music biz moves more CDs, so there is no update yet on the chart.

  2. Over at Adam Official, here’s what RCAEd has to say about how Adam’s acoustic cd is selling:

Also, physical copies are about to SELL OUT, but don’t be alarmed if you get that message before Monday rolls around. We already started preparing to order additional quantities to cover everyone who wants one, probably making a slight variation to the artwork that’ll designate this batch as a 2nd edition/run/what have you.

  3. Actual Soundscan numbers:

Yay! I’ll update the numbers thread. Depending how Black Friday goes, Taylor should be close to going double platinum.

probably making a slight variation to the artwork that’ll designate this batch as a 2nd edition/run/what have you.

Good idea. Then the “collector” will have to get both copies (whilst also ensuring a final run on the “1st edition”).

  4. Great (not unexpected) that the Adam CD EP is almost sold out. But I am very pleased that they decided to modify the CD for the next run of CDs. Very respectful of fans.

I imagine it will insure that the “1st edition” will sell out quickly — not to sure that a minor cover variation will sell too many copies. There are so many FYE album versions that I think most Adam collectors are no long total completists. But just a guess.

I actually think that there are so many Adam fans who love the stripped down acoustic versions of these songs that the music is driving the sales vs. fan “scrapbooking”. And that is a good sign for continued sales.

Very strong opening for Jackie Evancho. Not my fav but pleased for her. Just placing my bet that Michael Grimm will also have a strong opening week (although doubt it has any shot at being >200,000 — hoping for >50K — but that will not be until March.)

Somehow in this context (SuBo and Jackie showing that reality TV stars have real sales power) the Lee numbers just hit me as being so low.

Kristen, kudos for nailing Josh Grobin’s big numbers — because I really am surprised he came in at #4.

Finally, surprised that Chris Tomlin has two albums on the Billboard 200 Top 20 — #17 and #20. Has an artist marketed as a Christian artist ever done this before? Seems like it could be a first to me.

  11. WOW! RCA Ed posted that 7,000 Acoustic Live EPs have been ordered on the presale so far. No split for how much is from the US, but if it is half, it should make the Billboard 200 when it releases in mid-December! :)

    RCA Ed:
Re: Will the Acoustic EP be sold on iTunes?

The EP pre-sales carried out here on AO (already topping 7,000 units!) will be reported for the Soundscan week ending on 12/13, and thus will be ADDED to the sales numbers attained on iTunes and other digi retailers that week.

Each song from the EP will likewise also be eligible for iTunes’ Singles chart beginning on 12/6.

Isn’t Chris Tomlin considered a “superstar” in the realm of Christian music?

    Yes, he is.

But two Top 20 albums in the same week is very impressive for any artist.

“Glory in the Highest: Christmas Songs” was #19 last week but seems to be selling more this year than last year when it was released. I was expecting it to drop a bit lower this week because there are so many new Christmas albums this year.

He has had a Top 10 album before and another Top 20 album — so the fact that the new release is #17 isn’t so surprising.

It was the fact that his 2009 Christmas album came in at #20 this week that surprised me. It is #1 on the Billboard Catalog Album chart (second week), #4 on the Holiday album chart (#3 last week), and was #19 on Billboard 200 last week.

Maybe it doesn’t take much to impress me!

They are producing a limited number of the Poster Edition, but he posted that they would produce as many CDs as needed to fill orders before the release. Here is his post on the subject:

Re: Adam’s Acoustic Album – Can It Be Pre-ordered?
We will press as many physical copies as we need to satisfy your orders, so have at it, and we’ll take care of ya.

There are three options available for Acoustic Live — the $12.99 Limited Edition poster + CD, $4.99 CD and the $4.99 digital EP. The news today is that they are changing the cover for the next run of the CD — apparently slightly — but that is new. Also that they have sold over 7,000 copies already. This is, of course, Worldwide — not just US sales.

It has more airplay on HAC than this although not gaining traction there either.

Really don’t expect much in the way of airplay unless Jive gives it an add date and starts to work the song. I don’t see any evidence of either happening right now. Maybe after the holiday freeze? Has Jive indicated anything about doing some promo for this song?

Great to hear it’s selling well. I just wish there was more songs on the album. I would love to have an acoustic version of Sleepwalker and Broken Open. I guess I shouldn’t complain, I was hoping he would get a acoustic album, just wasn’t sure they would actually let him have one this year. But obviously the guys in charge realized that his fans wanted this and they could make a profit off of it. I am hoping that RCA will allow David Cook to put out an acoustic some where down the line. He would sound great and his fans will buy it.

if it hasnt happened by now… dont expect it to later… lol

  18. Billboard 200 is up, Lee in at #19, #10 on the Digital Album Chart.

  19. Do only the pre-orders that are shipping to the US count for US sales or do all orders that originate through AO count for US sales?

  20. I am hoping that RCA will allow David Cook to put out an acoustic some where down the line. He would sound great and his fans will buy it.

The music business has not been very creative with product development in the past. There is clearly more experimentation going on now — more super-deluxe editions, more EPs, etc. But the EPs are mostly being put out only by two types of artists — new artists as an inexpensive alternative to a full album, and artists who have high album sales and very committed fans. The super-deluxe editions seems to be really reserved for mega stars — Gaga, The Beatles, etc. Most of the other attempts to succeed with these have not done too well.

I think there is a better chance for Cook to have more product based on his second album because that is an overall trend. But unless there is some unusual strategy in the works for his next album, the will release a lead single, then an album. And if/when it is a hit, they will produce product versions. And I can’t see why they would do anything unusual for David’s next album launch. He has an established fanbase, he is well known, he just needs a hit on the radio and a good album — I expect to see both.

For Adam, I believe that RCA has underestimated the US/Canada Adam market a lot with the failure to release a Glam Box for Holiday 2010 here. Thankfully, we will get the DVD beginning of 2011 and the new album is in the works. And, I wish Adam/RCA had released the Zurich Sleepwalker and Fantasy Springs WLL on the EP. They are my fav Adam acoustic performance — has been since I heard them. But, as far as I can tell, there are no high-quality recordings of either performance. And the fan videos are not clean enough to use as master recordings.

Do only the pre-orders that are shipping to the US count for US sales or do all orders that originate through AO count for US sales?

Only the direct orders shipped to US addresses are supposed to be counted as US Soundscan sales. But since RIAA is wholesale sales, international sales sold by a US retailer count toward certification — based on the retailer’s location, not the buyer. The same think applies to the FYE CE that is sold on AO.com internationally — counts only toward RIAA.

Since Acoustic Live is now over 7K, it should safely hit 5K in the US — may be there already. That should be enough to get it on the Billboard 200. Now I am getting greedy and want it to make the Top 100!! :)

  22. There are three options available for Acoustic Live — the $12.99 Limited Edition poster + CD, $4.99 CD and the $4.99 digital EP.

Oh I didn’t bother to check and see if they had the digital EP on sale there, I was waiting for iTunes. I may just go and buy today then. :)

  23. The fact that there are already over 7000 pre-orders makes me wish it had been sent to Walmart, Target, etc. instead of just available on AO. I think they could have sold a lot more.

Doesn’t Kesha’s EP have new songs on it? If so, then not comparable.

7,000 doesn’t seem like a lot of sales for Adam.

ETA I just checked at iTunes – Bieber is number 1 in Canada with his acoustic EP. Just released today. Can anyone tell me where he sits in the Armerican iTunes? Thanks in advance

  27. ^^ keshas cannibal is all new music and is available everywhere and being heavily promoted. It aLso has a top selling lead single. Can’t compare at all. Adams is a five song Internet and website only product with no new songs. I believe biebers acoustic cd has at least one new song and is a wal- Matt exclusive for the hard copy.

  29. HDD predictions for this week’s sales:

“With Black Friday hitting, our margin of error could be a little wider this week, but expect between 10-12 titles to hit six figures on Tuesday’s chart, topped by the current King and Queen of hip-hop, as Kanye West’s magnificent My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday go 1-2 on the Top 50.”

    *Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/IDJ) 525-575k
*Nicki Minaj (Cash Money/Universal Motown) 375-400k
    Susan Boyle (Columbia) 275-300k
    Jackie Evancho (Columbia) 175-200k
    Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 175-200k
    Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 140-160k
*Justin Bieber My Worlds Acoustic (Island/IDJ) 140-160k
    *My Chemical Romance (Reprise) 120-140k
    *Ne-Yo (Def Jam/IDJ) 120-140k
    Glee Cast Christmas (Columbia) 100-120k
    Josh Groban (Reprise) 90-100k
    Kid Rock (Atlantic) 90-100k
    *Ke$ha Cannibal (Kemosabe/RCA/RMG) 60-70k
    Keith Urban (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 60-70k
    Rascal Flatts (Big Machine) 60-70k
    *Debuts (11/26p)

  30. Frankly I’m not surprised that Kesha is not selling more albums. I understand why people buy her songs, they are catchy as hell thanks to the dr Luke production and some clever writing. But her performances live suck bad, she has no voice and very little of other intangibles.

Looking at that list, it also points to me that pop radio really doesn’t matter that much when it comes down to selling albums. Rihanna has a ridiculous amount of top 10 singles and she is being badly outsold by Susan Boyle and Jackie Evancho
Kanye is also not getting much airplay but he is selling based on name recognition and critical acclaim.

  31. What is Susan Boyle going to put on her THIRD album which most likely will come out on Xmas 2011?? More Christmas songs? Or the novelty will wear off at that time?

Adam’s EP is not equivalant to Bieber or Kesha’s new releases.

Bieber’s Acoustic Album released his 10-track acoustic album on 11/26/10 — but it is a Walmart exclusive in the US.

Kesha’s mini-LP released on 11/19/10 and is a 9-track mini-LP similar to Fame Monster — with all new songs and radio promo. Currently #10 on iTunes. (Seems low to me.)

There have been a few 5-track acoustic EPs derived from albums in the past but they don’t usually sell a lot — usually just of interest to highly committed fans. I am shocked that Acoustic Live sold over 7,000 units in 4 days of presale only on AO.com. I would have guess it would sell 2,000 or 3,000 units in the first presale week — because a lot of fans will just buy the digital version when released.

Bieber is gonna sell loads of his acoustic CD. Perfect christmas gift.

  38. Lees SS looks to have a pretty easy path to the mid 20 s on hac as all but one song ahead of it is falling. I think it has a very good chance of making top twenty. BUT unless it gets some big market adds and increases it’s ai it’s not gonna help it sell. Mid teens on hot ac and no other format usually doesn’t spur much in the way of sales. Interesting also that SS video did not make at least the low end of top twenty countdown it’s first week out. Idol videos ( other than fantasia for some reason) usually get on the cd immediately. He will probably get on next week but if not, that is not a great sign

I think that Kesha will just do OK with this mini-LP strategy. Clearly not going to be as big as Fame Monster.

Regarding Bieber — he’ll sell a ton. With the Walmart-only strategy, though, it will be a bit like that Miley Walmart-only album — it will not sell as much as it would have in general circulation. But, limiting the distribution would make this a guaranteed profitable venture out of the gate. It must be great to be the king of pre-teens! ETA: This could be a strategy more like Gaga Remixes — structured to get some US sales, but make a huge impact internationally where it is in general distribution.

  40. I think that Kesha will just do OK with this mini-LP strategy. Clearly not going to be as big as Fame Monster.

I think her single “We R as We R” sold over 200K the debuting week (or maybe it was some week after) so I am sure she is doing more than fine. Though she is way behind Gagas album sales, I think the combined sales of Gaga EP and EP+CD was around 300K?

  41. Bieber is gonna sell loads of his acoustic CD. Perfect christmas gift.

Did you all know that Bieber has a movie coming out? “Never say Never?” It looks like a documentary. The previewed it this weekend before the showing of “Tangled.” I know Miley had a movie and didn’t the Jonas Brotheres? It should do well.

The votes don’t count on VH1 until next week. There’s a week lag.
