  1. I can’t believe the feller with the odd glasses.. three names.. didn’t make it. (sorry, I’ve only seen MJ’s videos) I haven’t really gotten into it yet. But that kid has unreal talent, maybe they didn’t want to many guys with crazy range.. They have at least three, but he is so talented.

    Go James!

Edit: I went and checked cuts.. it’ Clint Gamboa (I thought he had three names).. he’s so talented. Paul has zero range, and nothing else (just my .02)

  2. I think a few things happen with Clint, Lorenzo.

    1. His reputation after the group performance did not help him as he was the one who kicked young Jacee out of the group he was in.

    2. He sang first and singing earlier rather than later in this large group is not always a good thing.

    3. His song choice could have hurt him. I thought the judges really loved this guy and he would get a chance at wildcard. But they preferred Stephano, Robbie, and Jovany obviously for chances at wildcards.

  3. MayMirabella – I agree. I think reason 1) is the most relevant, though. His Hollywood week edit was very bad, so there was no real chance of him winning after that.

  4. I think Clint should have been given the opportunity to sing instead of Giovanny. I am not of fan of either person, but based on the previous night’s performances and comments from the judges, Clint should have been given the opportunity first.

  5. Sorry to have to say this but it seemed like the wild card round was an affirmative action round meant to up the # of black contestants. The top10 only included 1- Jacob Lusk…and then they had 3 picks and used them to pick 2 African American girls – w ho really werent all that great. They left at least one real talented girl out of the running to even compete. People forget African Americans are only 12 percent of the population and in competitions like this are often over represented. 3/13 is almost double that percentage. At least this year they have a Latina though she wont win and is taking her Hispanic price too far. Its gonna turn some folks off. (Now why is it racist to say things like this or ask about African American’s superior athletic skills wh en the majority of the NBA, NFL etc are black when only 12 percent of the American population is? This probably wont even get posted…broadcasters get fired over comments like this but there is something to be said about it….and why is R&B only for black pple?

Not true. But you know what? For the past 3 seasons, there haven’t practically any black singers on Idol…the same with Latinas. I can’t think of anyone in the past 3 seasons. The last black singer to win (she’s really biracial) was Jordin in a very weak year — the year of Sanjaya. And if you look at the music charts, Blacks are high on the chart as music makers, producers, writers, rappers, etc. I think Idol wants to represent what is happening in the music scene. We can’t continue to have a C&W Idol / soft country every season…or else it should be called “Country Idol.”

These top 10 will go on tour and they will make money. There’s no guarantee any of them will be hit makers. It’s all a cr**ap shoot.

  7. Sorry to have to say this but it seemed like the wild card round was an affirmative action round meant to up the # of black contestants

I agree….they were definitely not the best two who were left after the top 10 was chosen.

  8. For the past 3 seasons, there haven’t practically any black singers on Idol…the same with Latinas. I can’t think of anyone in the past 3 seasons.

Just off the top of my head…
S8 Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud (biracial), Jasmine Murray; Allison Iraheta, Jorge whatever his name was from the top 13, Danny (lol, by marriage, still very close to wife’s Puerto Rican-rooted family)

S9 Michael Lynche, obviously. don’t remember the rest of them too well :?

  9. I think a few things happen with Clint, Lorenzo.

The sound mixing was also off during his performance. Nigel actually tweeted that he was very frustrated about the sound problems that happened on both nights. He screamed most of his performance, which is never good, especially when he needed a spectacular performance to overcome the whole Jacee issue, but the sound engineer didn’t help him.

You are reaching with the last one. I think the issue is that other than Matt, who most people probably don’t know is biracial, Lil, and Allison, over the past few years, the singers who aren’t white have not been viable contestants, they’ve been nothing more than fodder, who tptb knew couldn’t compete.

Sorry to have to say this but it seemed like the wild card round was an affirmative action round meant to up the # of black contestants.

Totally disagree. They took both of those girls because they were really good. I liked Lauren T and would have been ok if they had picked Lauren T to sing but Naima and Ashton are stronger singers than thin voiced Kendra. And Kendra totally didn’t do great in her final death song. No one is calling you racist just questioning your musical ear and you reasoning. And as for your population statistics, most of the people who buy music by the top black artists aka rihanna, lil wayne etc, guess what, they aren’t black. The majority of those buyers are young white teens. So whites and hispanics and asians buy urban/hip hop music as much as other demographics. The Idol viewing crowd is old but Idol is trying to attract younger music buyers. So they have really done a great job of casting a more interesting and talented group of contestants than they have in the last 2 years or so.

  11. Of course they would pick black girls – they don’t want to alienate a large part of the audience right off the bat. It was obvious to me that that would pick Ashton if she didn’t make it in because she has the commercial look – cute black girl. Kendra didn’t make it because she looked too much like Haley, who was already voted in. Lauren T. was really robbed since she would have been the quirky one added instead of Naima, if Naima had made it on the vote.
And I think they did “pull an audible” here. They never said how many wildcards will sing or be picked ahead of time, although any more than 13 would have resulted in a rejiggered TV schedule. Just looking back at some notes at hand I see Season 2 Top 12 was on 3/11/03 and Season 3 Top 12 was 3/16/04, Season 4 Top 12 = 3/15/05, Season 7 = Top 12 3/11/08.

In the early days there was loads of competitive black presence on Idol. Not so much since Season 3.

  12. Sorry to have to say this but it seemed like the wild card round was an affirmative action round meant to up the # of black contestants. The top10 only included 1- Jacob Lusk…and then they had 3 picks and used them to pick 2 African American girls – w ho really werent all that great.

Either way they picked, Ashthon/Naima or Kendra/Lauren T, the outcome would have been the same because none of these ladies are probably going to win. So they could have stuck two white girls and have absolutely no female black contestant represented in the finalist group, or do what they did. As for which duo are the most talented, sure Kendra and Lauren had nice voices, but Ashthon was clearly a better performer then both of them. As for Naima, she’s a fan favorite, a lot of people loved her because when she sings, you can tell she’s singing from deep within. So I’m especially happy that she made it. I also suspect that she was the Top 6 vote getter for the girls after Haley or Karen.

  13. Sorry to have to say this but it seemed like the wild card round was an affirmative action round meant to up the # of black contestants. Rush, is that you? LOL! That’s all I got! Maybe it these questions weren’t posed in such an offensive manner it might start a decent discussion, but you sorta loss me at the Latina price thing.

ETA: I will say two things though, first there was loads of black male contestants who truthfully could have been chosen for the top 24, but were inexplicably not chosen, as is the case year in, year out. Instead we get Jacob, who though very talented can’t win this contest. There also were more talented black women who were rejected, but I consider Naima especially capable, and Ashthon isn’t any less talented than imho Ms. Alaina or the girl who growls constantly. So even though you are entitled to your somewhat one sided opinion, and frankly I am sure it’s held by many that won’t admit it, I think it’s not really that valid. Every year some talented contestant gets short shrift. Happens. Can’t help to be a bit offended as one of my favorites was called the affirmative action winner at one points by butt hurt opposing fans. Not cool in a pool of such talented people.

  14. During season 7 there were 3 minorities in the top 4; David Archuleta, Jason Castro and Syesaha Mercado; all were Latinos and one was African-American/Latina. I can’t remember the rest…sorry

During season 8 there were several minorities; Adam Lambert (Gay and Jewish) Allison Iraheta (Latina) Matt Giraud (bi-racial) Anoop Desai (East Indian) Lil Rounds (African-American) and one disable blind person. That is 6 out the top 10.

  15. Plus Karen Rodriguez, Thia Megia and Pia Toscano were in the top 5 five

  16. Actually Country Western and Hard Rock singers are a minority in the American Idol competition, yet that type of music is very popular in the USA.

Every year there is only 1 of each. There more Pop, Soft Rock and R/B singers represented than other genres of singers and many times they are over represented.

  17. I can’t believe that Scotty McCreery and Justin Bieber are the same age…lol

  18. Sorry to have to say this but it seemed like the wild card round was an affirmative action round meant to up the # of black contestants.

They deserved it, so I don’t see a problem. Had they picked Julie or Ta-Tynisia after their disasters, or Jordan, I would be suspicious. But these two did a good job.

The top10 only included 1- Jacob Lusk…and then they had 3 picks and used them to pick 2 African American girls – w ho really werent all that great.

That’s your opinion, of course. Many people liked them.

They left at least one real talented girl out of the running to even compete.

They have to leave some out. Too bad you liked a person left out more than one in. Here’s a tissue.

People forget African Americans are only 12 percent of the population and in competitions like this are often over represented.

Who says a singing competition has to mimic the population mix?

At least this year they have a Latina though she wont win and is taking her Hispanic price too far.

I think you meant “pride,” I sort-of agree with you on that point. She is milking that. But hey, if that is a very important part of her life, maybe she is just being herself. The same way Paul is being himself by wearing a white blazer with red roses and moving like a drunk while signing, or Lauren A teasing and moving like a stripper.

  19. Something about Lauren and Haley seems really off…. I can totally picture this conversation.

    *on two sides of river*
Haley: How do you get to the other side?
Lauren: You are on the other side!

I have no idea why, they just look…. really unintelligent o_O.

Speaking of Season 9, it had 3 minorities in the Top 10: Aaron, Siobhan, and Katie never played guitar. ZING!

Well, I thought it was funny (if not really stupid), although I think Siobhan was the only non-guitarist there, as Aaron and Katie both knew how to play.

Nevertheless, a really good Top 13. Just out of curiosity, how many of them have been shown to play instruments? Scott, Paul, and Casey are the only ones who come to mind.

  20. I’ve got to say this is the most entertaining blog mj – whenever anyone tries to go over the top you have all these wonderful respondents who are just so witty and clever e.g. Rush, is that you? – so first came the groan but now I have a smile on my face!

  21. Speaking of Season 9, it had 3 minorities in the Top 10: Aaron, Siobhan, and Katie never played guitar. ZING!

    LMAO!

    jammasta, never change. :D

I want Karen to sing in Spanish every damn week. There are American citizens who like Latin music and/or speak Spanish! Imagine that. They get to have an American Idol to vote for too. Plus, the girl can sing. She just need to pick a non-cornball song to sing next time. Heh.

  22. I don’t get the bashing on Karen because she sang in Spanish. What is so awful about that? She’s proud of her heritage, and she’s showing people what kind of artist she wants to be, and she clearly wants to be able to crossover into latin music.

  23. I want Karen to sing in Spanish every damn week. There are American citizens who like Latin music and/or speak Spanish! Imagine that. They get to have an American Idol to vote for too. Plus, the girl can sing. She just need to pick a non-cornball song to sing next time. Heh.

I don’t know if every week. If she is in it to win it, she must seriously consider whether doing the half-and-half every week is wise.
That said, I think she sings better in Spanish than in English. But that just me, because my Spanish is better than my English :-).
She can bring her inner Latina some other ways. Rearrange Selena’s I Could Fall In Love with a Latin flavor (no Spanish necessary there).

  24. I don’t know if every week. If she is in it to win it, she must seriously consider whether doing the half-and-half every week is wise.

The pragmatic part of me says you are right, but the idealistic part of me wants her to do it anyway. :D

Anyway, I think you are right. She’s clearly aiming for Gloria Estefan/Selena territory, so as long as she makes everything she sings sound like something they would do she can find a balance.

  25. Paul’s teeth are blinding me to distraction.

They’re whiter than Randy’s. Veneers? Those can’t be real.

  26. They are all so talented someone was going to be left out. There’s someone for everyone’s taste. Kendra was great but it was clear to me that Niami really moved Steven, and Randy has always liked Ashton’s Sass. Some people really like the sassy “diva” singers.

I do have to smile at Scotty’s pictures. Ha, I love him a ton. But you can really tell he’s the “rawest” of all of them and really just a 17 year old new to all of this. The rest seem like pros all ready. I’m going to enjoy watching him be the one to get the most out of this show.

On Kendra though, I think she made more of a statement last night and hopefully will get some work and attention out of it. She wasn’t going to be able to stand out of the strong and/or quirky personalities of the top 13 and would be lost anyway.

  27. BTW I just wanted to add that Jennifer’s outfit is awful. What was she thinking?

  28. Just off the top of my head…
S8 Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud (biracial), Jasmine Murray; Allison Iraheta, Jorge whatever his name was from the top 13, Danny (lol, by marriage, still very close to wife’s Puerto Rican-rooted family)

oh dear lord, you really will try to shoehorn Danny into every thread, regardless of how little it has to do with him. He’s close to his PR in-laws and that equates him with Hispanic artists on the show? Oh hell no, that’s just silly.

  29. This conversation is hilarious.

And not that it matters, but I keep seeing peeps referring to Stafano and Pia as belonging to a minority. I thought they were Italian. Wazzup?

  30. This conversation is hilarious.

And not that it matters, but I keep seeing peeps referring to Stafano and Pia as belonging to a minority. I thought they were Italian. Wazzup?

They are Italian. Are we in the 1800s lol? Do only WASPS count as white?

  31. For the past 3 seasons, there haven’t practically any black singers on Idol…the same with Latinas.

Season 7’s Top 12 was pretty diverse (and it already started out quite diverse even at Top 24). For example: Syesha Mercado and Chikiezie were both African-American. Syesha, as we know, also has a hispanic background. And then, let’s not forget Mr. Archuleta, Mr. Castro and Mr. Hernandez. And, of course, the one-Pinoy-a-year spot was taken by Ms. Malubay. How is that not diverse enough?

And yeah, I didn’t know that Italians were considered ethnic minorities in this country. How?

  32. They are Italian. Are we in the 1800s lol? Do only WASPS count as white?

LOL. I think people were assuming they were hispanic because JLo is a judge? I have no idea. Plus Setfano and Jovanny sorta blend together, so I can see peeps getting confused there. But yeah, Tuscano is pretty Italian sounding to me. Oh well. **shrugs**

We have had a lot of diversity in the past 3 seasons, but unfortunately the minority contestants have tended to ride the bottom 3 for their whole stay, fighting tooth and nail to even stay in the contest. The one exception may be Archie – who a lot of people didn’t know was hispanic. So it does feel different to me. Hopefully this will be the year to break the trend.

That said, it may have everything to do with casting, especially for black male contestants. Why they can’t ever put one likeable, current one through lately is beyond me. This group has some solid people who seem like pretty good peeps otherwise, so yay for that. Overall this is a great top 13 IMO.

  33. I see the despisal of Lauren A. on the blogs and such as nothing more than the typical online geekdom hatred of those with early frontrunner status. Same thing happened to Archie and Danny. Same old shit every year.

I think Clint should have been given the opportunity to sing instead of Giovanny. I am not of fan of either person, but based on the previous night’s performances and comments from the judges, Clint should have been given the opportunity first.

Really? It must be April fool’s day, because this sounds nothing but a bad joke. Lol! Clint deserved 0 after his heartless attitude with Jacee! Many Idol fans are not over the incident that took place during Hollywood week and I’m certain neither did the casual voter. And probably never will. His performance on Tuesday was nothing short of exaggeration with his karaoke vocals. Its one thing to believe in yourself and go for your dream, its another to hurt someone’s feelings, because of the way they sound or look. He’s mean and had plenty of opportunities to apologize. It probably would’ve helped him. I’m super glad Gamboa is gone, for good! He can never audition for Idol again, he is 28 and this was his last chance. Hurray!

  35. I’m super glad Gamboa his gone, for good! He can never audition for Idol again, he is 28 and this was his last chance. Hurray!

That and the fact that he made the Top 24 disqualifies him from trying out again. Sucks for people like Kendra and Lauren Turner though :(

  36. Just off the top of my head … Danny (lol, by marriage, still very close to wife’s Puerto Rican-rooted family).

    Seriously? LOL.

That just tells me he is insane. What was he thinking? LOL.

    * Just kidding, I am Puerto Rican and my wife is Puerto Rican. Actually, I’ll take that back, he is batsh!t crazy.

** I know the tragic story. Lighten up.

  37. That and the fact that he made the Top 24 disqualifies him from trying out again. Sucks for people like Kendra and Lauren Turner though :(.

Well, as we just saw, 25 million people tuned in, and most critics, and blog posters, agree that Kendra should be in the top 13. So, particularly this season, my guess is that she’ll make something out of it.

  38. That and the fact that he made the Top 24 disqualifies him from trying out again. Sucks for people like Kendra and Lauren Turner though

That’s right! Thank you. *doing the Happy dance*

After Kendra’s performance of ‘GOMM’ last night, I was certain the judges would choose her (instead of Naima) for a Top 10 spot. Although talented as well and she nailed her performance on Wednesday, I never cared for Lauren T too much. Lol. BUT, I would’ve preferred Lauren T over Haley.

  39. I never got the love for Lauren T. Seems like a cool and funny girl to hang out with though.

  40. I never got the love for Lauren T. Seems like a cool and funny girl to hang out with though.

You must not have heard her sing.

  41. My lily white teenage boys LOVE Naima AND Karen! And they loved the singing in Spanish (which they study in school). What’s the big deal? And Pia Toscano is an Italian name. (As is Stefano Langone.)

Lauren T. was “minority” too. Not skinny and not particularly pretty. But DAYUM that girl can sing.

  42. Since they put coke cups on the judges table, at least they did last year, wouldnt it make sense to put Paul teeth whitening of choice on the table, so other contestants that need it can have an idea what to use and that they need it? Im lookin at you Casey love, then you can trim or cut your beard a little.
I just wish Paul would disclose his secret teeth whiteing secret, then I can rest easy. I have a feeling they are not his teeth, and the lab tech screwed up on the coloring process. I love you Paul!!!!!

  43. You must not have heard [Lauren T.] sing.

Well, I heard her for the first time on Wednesday and wasn’t impressed.
Plus, I hate to say, she looks like a man.
But, I will go back and listen to her performance. Just for kicks.

  44. Ok. I admit, Lauren T. can sing. I wasn’t impressed because I couldn’t get past the song. Not my cup of joe. Plus, she should have chosen something else to wear to accentuate the pros and hide the cons. I am sure that her shape was distracting me also, and not in a good way.

  45. Plus, I hate to say, she looks like a man.

when jlo said she reminds her of bette midler…we all knew jennifer was not talking about just the voice :)

  46. i dont care if paul’s teeth are white, red or blue…..he does resemble Alias era bradley cooper. not a bad thing in my book.

  47. I just wish Paul would disclose his secret teeth whiteing secret, then I can rest easy. I have a feeling they are not his teeth, and the lab tech screwed up on the coloring process. I love you Paul!!!!!

I dont care what language they sing in (even if i dont understand) just pick one per song please!

  50. Lots of nice photos from the AI10 group. Paul’s teeth really are quite white, lol.

Just off the top of my head … Danny (lol, by marriage, still very close to wife’s Puerto Rican-rooted family).

My sense of humor seems to be debatable, it was supposed to be light

But for what it’s worth, a reference to Danny’s ongoing association with his wife’s family isn’t anything about a tragic story. They just are close, and he’s pretty much adopted into that family.

Danny lived with his wife’s sister and her husband in Nashville for most of the first year he was in Nashville. His BIL from the beginning has played in Danny’s band as his bass player, touring with him from the radio tour a year ago through today. And there’s also the Sophia’s Heart connection, which is an effort of Danny with his wife’s family. Sometime later this month, Danny is off to Puerto Rico to attend a wedding within his extended Puerto Rican family.

  51. Have any videos of the contestants (blue-carpet interviews and such) shown up anywhere? I haven’t found any. Anybody know?
