American Idol and Billboard Music Awards Will Compete Head to Head

NBC has announced the Billboard Music Awards will air on Sunday May 20. Likely, that’s the date the American Idol finale will air on ABC. Ironically, up until this year, the BMA’s aired on ABC.  Last year, the Awards earned a 2.6 rating with 9.6 million viewers–down from the previous year’s 3.1 and 9.6 million numbers–but still the highest rated show of the night.

It will be interesting to see how both shows do going head to head.

NBC and dick clark productions have set Sunday, May 20 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT for its coast-to-coast live telecast of the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.

This will mark the first telecast of the highly popular music awards show on NBC. The network acquired the rights to the Billboard Music Awards in a new multi-year deal signed in November.

The Billboard Music Awards showcases the hottest musical acts, biggest performances, unexpected collaborations and buzzworthy pop culture moments that will have the world talking.

Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key interactions with music fans, as well as album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound. The finalists and award winners are determined using data reflecting a 12-month tracking period. Since 1940, the Billboard charts have been the go-to guide for ranking the popularity of artists, songs and albums, and are the ultimate measure of success in music.
