(ABC/Eric McCandless) ARTHUR GUNN

American Idol season 18 premiered on ABC Sunday (Feb 16) with its usual mix of aspirational, heart tugging stories, joke contestants, judges antics and more. The judges traveled to Savannah, Georgia; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles, California; and Sunriver, Oregon looking for talent. Tonight was the first taste of what is to come.

Favorite performances: Louis Knight and Francisco Martin are both passionate and connected to what they sing. Just Sam shows promise, but she could use a few more years experience. Why do I have this sense she’ll fall apart in Hollywood? Arthur Gunn’s vocal delivery feels authentic, but if I close my eyes, I mix him up with season 11 winner Phillip Phillips. We have one of those already.

So far, the show hasn’t strayed from the formula ABC has established since taking over from FOX: That includes the obligatory joke rock n roll screamo contestant, and off the wall female hopeful. If Idol sticks with joke contestants, the producers need to introduce new tropes.

The bottom line is that although I enjoyed the premiere, I’m reasonably sure I have not found my favorite singer yet.

Now it’s time to VOTE for your favorites. Have at it!
