Fourteen performances plus voting and an elimination were squeezed into a two hour show. Too much? I think maybe. Some singers rose to the occasion while others cracked under pressure. And in this short season of Idol, there is NO room for forgiveness.

Specifically, Catie Turner, could not overcome a bad performance tonight. Actually, I think a few things were going on. I personally loved her Winehouse flavored version of “Oops I Did it Again.” But then, I literally could not care about the original version. So I had no issue with Catie’s radical reimagining of the iconic song. And I think the key word here is ICONIC. When a hit is beloved, it’s very dangerous to mess with its DNA. I took a peek on twitter and Catie was trending. The reaction to the performance was VERY mixed. And then she forgot the words to “Manic Monday” at the top of the song, and never really recovered. I thought Catie would get some pity votes. But nuh uh. Tough crowd. It doesn’t help that Catie has her fans (she’s got a big social media following) but she has her detractors as well. Polarizing. I really thought she had a shot at the final. I was wrong. At this point, I hope Scott Bradlee of Postmodern Jukebox has taken note of a singer who could be his next chanteuse.

The annoying thing? Is how cute male singers are graded on a curve. If the Top 5 were based on the best performances, Cade Foehner would be heading back to his cowboy ranch. He’s a good guitar player and a charismatic performer. But his vocals are weak sauce. Let’s just say he would NOT get a turn on The Voice. Nevertheless, I would not be surprised if he made it to the Top 3. Prior to this week, I would have put Caleb Lee Hutchinson in that category as well. But dang it–that boy did step up to the plate with an original and risky take on “When Doves Cry.” He put his whole heart into that. Finally, Caleb sings as if his life depended on it.

If I were the queen of American Idol? Maddie Poppe would take the crown. She’s consistent, original, talented. And she’s one of the best singers remaining. She could be a pop star. But nah. Gabby Barrett is probably going to win. Not that she wouldn’t entirely deserve it. Her performance of How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore was a pro turn and a vocal tour de force. Leaning on her gospel roots to deliver that song was genius.

So long to the talented vocalist Jurnee who never quite connected with viewers, although she had some stunning vocal performances, especially early on. Jurnee peaked early, I think. And she never got comfortable in front of a live audience.

Oh well–at this point the entire Top 7 is going on tour. So it’s all good.

I am pretty thrilled season 4 winner Carrie Underwood will be mentoring the kids as they take on her catalog. I mean, NBC built their entire season of The Voice around poaching Idol talent. Bringing aboard American Idol’s biggest star to mentor the kids just had to happen! I expect Carrie will be a thoughtful and kind mentor. She’ll have some real wisdom to impart to those contestants. Speaking of mentors, Nick Jonas has made his rounds of the singing shows–X Factor in 2012 and The Voice in 2015. It’s no wonder he seemed full of good advice for the contestants.
