  1. I don’t like Brielle’s song choice. If Simon was still judging, he would say the song is too old for her. I expected an upbeat country song from Chelsea. Hopefully, she puts her own take on Carrie’s song because she probably can’t sing as well as Carrie.

For some reason, I think the shocking decision will be to bring back a 13th girl. There were already spoilers saying this could happen & it would be fair since the guys had 13 contestants.

  2. Why isn’t Erika singing soul/r&b/pop? She needs to keep her future album in mind…

  3. Well, there goes the shocking decision. Hope it is a good one. :)

  4. I would love that song choice if it was done by someone else. I would love if someone could do the Sara Braelies (sp?) version of the song, since that version kicks ass.

  5. I agree. I wouldn’t have a problem with the song choice if it wasn’t picked by a teenager.

  6. Quite excited to hear Jessica Sanchez tonight. After the horribleness that was the Boys last night, the girls better bring it. :)

  7. Chelsea’s my favorite voice in the whole competition and should sound great on a Carrie song but I don’t know about inviting that comparison. I’m interested to see which one she’s picked.

Pretty good choice for Erika but I’m not gonna lie, I haven’t thought about that song the same way ever since those Swifffer commercials.

I LOVE Haley Johnson’s choice. Really hoping for a breakout moment for her.

Brielle’s choice: I like the song, meh on her singing it.

  8.  I hope that the shocking decision is to bring Lauren back but I’m losing hope for that.

  9.  Same here about Haley’s choice. If she does something original with it, it could be a HUGE moment for her.

  10.  I have a feeling that the “shocking” decision is to bring back a girl. I’m leaning towards it being Colton’s sister…

  11. Yay! Spoilers. I love spoilers.

    > Brielle Von Hugel will be performing “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” by Otis Redding

Does not matter what she sings because she is going home. That said, terrible song choice. It’s been done to death.

    > Chelsea Sorrell will be performing a song by Carrie Underwood

Singing Carrie actually seems to work on this show. Never sing Kelly. That said, kind of a boring choice. I think one should stay away from songs originally recorded by previous Idols. I want to see the new things you bring to the table. We already have a Carrie.

    > Erika Van Pelt will be performing “What About Love” by Heart

It’s a great song, but I think a safe choice. It’s predictable. Erika needs to come out swinging to differentiate herself from the pack

    > Haley Johnsen will be performing “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This” by The Eurythmics

Haley is a total “Who?” at this point. She needs a strong performance more than pretty much any other girl. This is a great song, but it’s an atmospheric song. I’m not sure that it works well in a singing competition.  Lots of repetitive lyrics and if it’s not recorded, you have to let the back-up singers take over chunks of it. And how to you change it up to avoid a karaoke charge?

I’m uninspired by all these choices so far.

  12. Oh, Hollie C… WHY XTINA????

Yawn. Unless she does something with the arrangement, this is gonna suck.

  13. Hollie and Jessica are the two girls that I am rooting for. I too am wondering why Hollie picked “Reflection.” That was a poor choice.

  14. I can’t remember who is who because too many of them have similar-sounding names. And none of these song choices seem like they’re gonna help anyone stand out. Yikes.

Now who wants to bet there’s a Whitney Houston song show this season?

  15. Jessica doing Jennifer. This could be good. Jessica is definitely in my top three this season. If she picks a good Jennifer song, she could have a moment tonight.

  16. The Shocking Decision is probably that somebody foolishly decided to sing a Whitney Houston song!

  17. I’m with you on Chelsea – think her actual voice is better than Carrie’s – but she seems a bit tentative – hoping she can pull it off.

  18. Oh, geez. Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay and the Mulan song. Oh, well, I guess it could be Happy Feet.

  19. These “shocking twists” are annoying and smell desperate. Quit it.

  20. I believe the producers are forgetting that two people have sung the same songs in the past…  Maybe not Adele, but in season 4 I remember Carrie and Anthony singing the same song, top 4ish if I am not mistaken.

Things like this make me question whether or not the Idol Producers are sipping a little (or a lot of) something in their meetings.

  21.  I don’t think the producers are billing it as a shocking twist. The spoiler person is doing that.

  22. The big Idol twist: “Producers decided to have Elise Testone and Jennifer “Jen” Hirsh perform the same Adele song!”.

This seems designed to ensure that only one of them (whoever has the better performance) gets voted through.  Which really sucks, because I really like both of them.

  23. But we already heard Jennifer Hudson last night. I was hoping for a feisty song.

  24. you’re going to have TWO girls sing the same Adele song?

I wonder if this is supposed to be exciting.  It just looks like another silly stunt that will fall flat.

  25. One of the early seasons saw 4 or 5 Idols sing the exact same song almost back to back…that is when they went to the draw system.  I can’t remember Carrie and Anthony singing the same song the same week….maybe the same song the same season.  But…dementia, ya know.

  26. Not a wise choice for Chelsea I think. She wouldn’t get away from all the comparisons they’d make between Carrie and her. Plus, it is really hard for anybody to out-sing Carrie. But I really do hope she’d nail it since she is my favorite girl this year.

  27. I have high hopes for Bailey Brown. Hope she sings a song that will allow her to shine. She really is quite a remarkable story. Rarely does someone wait 5 years to come back for another shot. Probably a very smart move on her part and it really is awesome to see how developed she is as a singer compared to when she was 16. I think it was great that she tried out at a young age though just for the experience and now she has a fanbase to build on.

  28.

“Having Jen and Elise sing the same Adele song…. Wow. Kind of annoying.”

Highly annoying, and completely artificial – and makes a mockery of “Song Choice” is sooo important. Don’t tell me they both had this on their list of ten songs? One of the rules ‘used’ to be that contestants could Not sing the same song on the same night. But then, there used to be a rule that TPTB could not dictate song choices. (Of course they manipulate, but they used to pretend it was the contestant’s choice – now they just blame them for a choice they didn’t make.)

Gee, sounds more like a Faux Battle Round, to me. DNW.

  29.  Singing the same Adele song? That’s the big surprise?

Now I just think Nigel is sabotaging the show since Fox pulled SYTYCD results out from under him, lol. I’ve never seen a hit show sink so fast.

  30. In S2, Clay & Josh both sang “To Love Somebody” during Bee Gees week. In S4, Carrie & Anthony both sang “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” on Top 4 week.

  31. One of the early seasons saw 4 or 5 Idols sing the exact same song almost back to back

There have been a couple of instances of two contestants choosing the same song during the semi-finals. The producers ok’d it because the performances were on different nights.

This is different. The producers are purposely setting up two contestants to go head to head on the same song on the same night.

  32. There’s going to inevitable comparisons of Elise and Jen even if they do really different takes on the song. It might inspire their fans to vote extra hard for each since they may feel like they’re marked for elimination by the producers.

I’m interested to hear what Jessica chose. I can see her singing Spotlight though I don’t know if that’s going to translate well on the Idol stage.

  33. I thought the big twist was they are bringing another girl back.  I hope that is the case.  Two girls singing the same Adele song, it will probably lose votes for each of them, not a wise decision, I thought they said last night the contestants actually chose the songs, not the producers.  I am guessing Jessica will sing “and I am telling you” and will blow it out of the park.  I don’t see her singing Spotlight, Where You at? or I got this.

  34. I know it’s always like this in this round, but these song choices are so BLAH. The producers could stand to give us a little originality and freshness with their picks. I don’t like the idea of two people singing the same song because it has been done before, but WHY ADELE??! That especially grates on my nerves.

Eben was an unusually bad situation, but I would like all of her songs to be retired from Idol. No one can sing them like her.

  35. Singing the same sound could work if one of them switches it up.

But I am concerned about 2 things so far:
    1. The songs we know are all pretty slow.
    2. So many of the stronger female singers picked songs by some of the best female voices out there. That is a good way to get yourself compared unfavorably even though you can sing. Bad move. The only person I who I think can pull that off is Jessica.

  36. I don’t think this “Idol twist” is really going to be promoted as one tonight. I think the producers & Idol will bring up that they both chose the same Adele song, but won’t promote it as a twist.

I think the person who is spoiling all this is saying it’s a twist.

  37. ” The big Idol twist: “Producers decided to have Elise Testone and Jennifer “Jen” Hirsh
perform the same Adele song!”. Are you f*cking serious. Dear God.
First of all, you guys were complaining about having to listen to Adele
songs over and over again in auditions, now, you’re going to have TWO
girls sing the same Adele song? KILL ME NOW.”

Well, I guess Nigel really has paid attention to the competition. First he pulls a Melanie-Amaro-is-rescued joint, with Jermaine. And now he’s imitating the Battle Rounds of The Voice. Maybe we’ll be really lucky and he’ll go the whole hog — have the two of them sing the song at the same time. (a feature of The Voice that I really hate, by the way.)

  38. The producers probably aren’t going to make a big deal about it at all-it was just the spoiler site making a “twist.”

  39. “The big Idol twist: “Producers decided to have Elise Testone and Jennifer “Jen” Hirsh perform the same Adele song!”.
I think it’s their response to the Battle Rounds from the Voice. Idol is TOTALLY desperate. What a trainwreck this season.

  40. Actually, before her YouTube videos were taken down did sing “Spotlight.” She did a pretty good job. On YT, she covered a lot of songs including some upbeat songs from Beyonce & Rihanna & she did them pretty well. So I think she has the range to sing “Spotlight.” I’m just unsure how good are her performance skills.

  41. tinawina: 2. So many of the stronger female singers picked songs by some of the best female voices out there. That is a good way to get yourself compared unfavorably even though you can sing. Bad move. The only person I who I think can pull that off is Jessica.

I was definitely hoping some of the girls would take songs originally sung like guys, just to avoid the obvious comparisons. Though I didn’t necessarily like the results, I thought some of the performances that worked best last night were the ones where guys chose songs originally sung by females.

I can see Chelsea pulling off a Carrie song. It might be better if she chose an album track like Lauren did last year instead of a single. Lauren didn’t perform Flat On The Floor anywhere near as well as Carrie does but people still liked that performance and it became a tour song for Lauren.

  42. I hope you are right because I really like Chelsea’s voice. When I watched those group rounds back on YouTube she really stood out. I am pulling for her.

I also hope she picked something upbeat!

  43. they want to pit them against each other so only one is voted in the top 5 i guess.  I find this so ridiculous and unfair

  44. These song choices…oy vey.

Can we please retire Reflection? Please?!

And I can’t believe they’re pitting two girls against each other by having them sing the same song.  Ugh.

  45. It’s obvious that the Idol producers are making decisions on the fly from week to week and in the process are  “stealing” some of the more useless ideas from their competitors. If this is their strategy, I wish they’d come up with something more original. Like a weekly guest judge who is willing to tell it like it is.

  46. Actually, its not at all….in the earlier seasons I think it was Ruben and Josh who performed the same song then Anthony and Carrie in Season 4.

  47. Carrie and Anthony sang the same song Top4 night in season 4 and in season 2 we had two instances with Josh having the same song sung twice..Bee Gees night he and Clay sang To Love Somebody and Motown he and Ruben sang Aint To Proud To Beg. This is nothing new. HOWEVER PLEASE BAN ADELE FOR GODS SAKE!

  48. Okay, NOW I’m getting a serious Season Nine vibe from the show. I’m calling it. This is a DOOMED season.

  49. Producers decided to have Elise Testone and Jennifer “Jen” Hirsh perform the same Adele song!

Say what???  That is just insane!  This just has Ken’s fingerprints all over it.  ;) The ones I’m most interested in hearing tonight are Erika and Jessica.

  50.  ” If this is their strategy, I wish they’d come up with something more
original. Like a weekly guest judge who is willing to tell it like it
    is.”

Now there’s an idea. They could steal good judging from The Sing-Off. And that would be the first thing worth stealing!

  51. looking forward to Elise, Jen, Erika & Jessica!

Hate the fact the producers are making Elise and Jen do the same song. WTAF??? (in fact if no one ever covered Adele on any reality singing competition ever again, I’d be so happy)

  52. Well all of the songs sound crappy to me, it is going to make for a loooooooonnnnnnngggg boring show tonight.  I am so glad I have a DVR.  I watched AI when I woke up this a.m., and I FF’d through most of Colton, and parts of others, but the judges I didn’t listen to at all (oops, exception, I accidentally heard ST singing to Heejun, and thought, boy oh boy he really can still sing in snippets)…I really, really, really hate this regurgitated song list.  There are so many other artist that have songs, and I know permission is necessary to sing their songs, but I am sick of the choices, it has been the same darn songs for 8 seasons.

  53. you guys would find something to bitch about no matter what…ever heard of just enjoying the show for what it is…entertainment!  Either stop watching the show if you hate it so bad or say something positive and stop trying to kill the best show on tv that you know you would miss if it was gone. I gotta stop reading these blogs, making me nuts. The boys were not that bad last night for first live show, how soon we forget the year before…

  54. Reflection…REALLY Hollie? This season is really starting to feel like a bust.
Eh, at least we got Haley last season and her new single is all kinds of awesome.

  55. Yes Idol, GREAT idea! Take two of your best female vocalists and have them sing the same song-basically ensuring that at least one of them stands no chance of making the top 10; this is one of the dumbest moves in the shows history and I personally will be very upset if either of these girls go home Thursday night because both of them can SANG!

  56. I guess they don’t want both Jen and Elise in the competition, because I don’t think the general audience is going to enjoy hearing two contestants sing the same song on Idol. They may do it on The Voice, but *everyone* does it on The Voice. On Idol, it’s supposed to be about standing out and apart from the others.

  57. I look forward to the girls performance.  They seem stronger than the guys.  I don’t know half their names though – especially some of the blonde ones.  (its like the first time I don’t know all the contestants already in all 11 seasons.)  I like Chelsey Sorell’s voice and she is good enough to handle Carrie’s song.  Jessica Sanchez is a good singer and her voice has a Beyonce and Jeniffer Hudson vibe, so that song should fit her.   So 2 contestants are singing the same Adele song.  That should be interesting.  I think once in previous season two contestants did the same song too.

  58. Or neither if they split the vote.  Great singers (especially Elise…she actually made me turn and look at the TV when she sang) but not conventionally attractive.  That’s low, Idol.  Those poor girls.

  59. I really don’t get this! If both girls wanted to sing Adele, why not have them choose different songs of hers? It’s not like she doesn’t have several recognizable songs! Adele’s 21 is packed with good song choices for a vocalist that can handle one of her songs.

Which Adele song do we think it is? I’m thinking that both of them are going to do SLY, except for that doesn’t seem like a good choice for Jen.

ETA: Correction! I just figured out who Elise is. In my mind, I was thinking of Erika. (too many blondes this year) I now think they are going to have both these girls sing RITD. Nigel is so effing unimaginative. He will think that this song will be good for Elise this year, since it was good for Haley last year.

  60. ….my bet is that WHATEVER Jessica Sanjezz(SP?) sings will be stella! …JUST GO LOOK AT HER YOUTUBE SONGS…wow…AND, WHO CARES THAT 2 sing ADELE-only the good will survive and that might be BOTH!??…blogs are just full of drama seekers…lol..

  61. if haley sings the version of sweet dreams from sucker punch and the judges praise her for being original and unique, i will scream.

  62. “only the good will survive”

you’re new to Idol aren’t you?

If the contestants TRULY picked their own songs, Elise and Jen singing the same song isn’t a big deal. It’s happened before. But if the producers picked for them, it’s just desperate and shows how worried they are of the competition. But I guess if they pawn it off like the girls picked that, it’s no harm no foul.

  63. How will two singers performing the same song help the ratings? Idol’s done it before way back when and it’s really not a big deal. Is this supposed to be stealing the thunder of the battle rounds on The Voice? If so then Idol needs to try (a lot) harder.

  64. There you go, Elise will probably be the one to survive between her and Jen. Unless she really messes up, of course, but I cannot see a vocalist of her caliber doing so. Hope Jen can go through too, but I’m not sure.

  65. dose anyone know where to find the dress Brielle Von Hugel was wearing?????? and was it a maxi dress??
