The Amazing Race: All Stars Episode 5 Discussion and Recap (UPDATED)

Tonight the remaining teams traveled to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Read on to find out how teams fared in fishing, spinning plates, and sewing shirts.

The episode kicks off at a Hindu shrine in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Jet and Cord are the first team to depart, and they are informed that their new destination is Colombo, Sri Lanka. They must proceed to the Gangaramaya Temple, and they will receive their next clue after they are blessed by a priest. The cowboys go to a travel agency to book tickets for a direct flight to Colombo. Every other team gets on the same flight, except for Brendon and Rachel and Margie and Luke. Brendon and Rachel take a risk by booking tickets for a connecting flight in Singapore with only a half hour layover. Margie and Luke, on the other hand, wait at the airport on standby.

Luckily, Brendon and Rachel make their connecting flight and are in the lead by the time they arrive in Colombo. The rest of the teams are behind them in the direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Colombo, except for Margie and Luke. There are still no available seats for them, so they are now way behind the other teams in a huge disadvantage.

Brendon and Rachel are the first team to arrive at the temple, but it doesn’t open until 5:45am in the morning. They sit on the steps outside while all the other teams (except Margie and Luke) arrive one after another.

Margie and Luke are still at the airport by the time the Gangaramaya Temple opens. The rest of the teams enter, and they have to take off their shoes and wear special white garments inside the temple as a symbol of respect while they are being blessed. Afterwards, the teams must proceed to King Coconut Stand by train. So all the teams travel to Fort Train Station and take the ride to the coconut stand. While on the train, Caroline admits she is a huge fan of Jet and Cord and was adamant about becoming friends with them.

Margie and Luke are finally boarding a plane to Colombo, but all the teams are getting off the train by this point. They drive through crazy traffic with speeding vehicles honking at one another before Dave and Connor are the first team to arrive at King Coconut Stand. The clue reveals that there is a Detour to complete: Fishing Pole or Spin Control? Fishing Pole requires teams to sit on a perch in the ocean until both members of each team catches a fish. Spin Control requires teams to perform a dance while spinning plates on sticks. Dave and Connor, Jet and Cord, and John and Jessica choose to go fishing, while Caroline and Jennifer, Brendon and Rachel, Flight Time and Big Easy, and Leo and Jamal choose to spin plates.

Connor is the first to catch a fish, and Dave catches one shortly afterwards. Dave and Connor are now in first place as they open their next clue. They must now proceed to Trendy Connections Garment Factory. But right behind them are Flight Time and Big Easy, who complete the Spin Control Detour on their first attempt. They are in second place as they make their way to the garment factory.

Leo and Jamal soon complete the Spin Control Detour too, putting them in third place. Cord then catches a fish and must wait for Jet to catch one too. The wait isn’t long as the cowboys are in fourth place by the time Jet catches a fish. And after numerous attempts at the Spin Control Detour, Caroline and Jennifer complete the task to be in fifth place. And right behind them are Brendon and Rachel in sixth place, after fourteen attempts at the Detour.

Margie and Luke finally arrive at Colombo while John and Jessica are the only team still working on the Detour. They have had no luck in the Fishing Pole Detour, so they switch to the other one. Margie and Luke are getting blessed while the teams in the lead arrive at the Roadblock.

The Roadblock requires one team member to sew a shirt, and their next clue will be pressed onto the shirt after it’s stitched correctly. Connor, Jennifer, Big Easy, Jet, and Leo attempt the Roadblock for their respective teams. Jessica does the Roadblock after they finish the Spin Control Detour, and Brendon does the Roadblock after he and Rachel complete their Speed Bump (they had to put the final layer of paint on fifteen shirts that creates the image of the Sri Lanka flag).

The rest of the episode is pretty much just the teams working on sewing their shirts. Connor and Jennifer help each other out, as do Brendon and Jessica. To help pass the time, as well as entertain the workers, Flight Time gets out his basketball and performs some tricks. But after all is said and done, all the teams complete the task and check in at the Pit Stop (Colombo Rowing Club) before Margie and Luke even arrive.

Connor was the first to complete the Roadblock, so he and Dave arrive at the Pit Stop first and are Team #1! They win $5,000 each. And right behind them are Caroline and Jennifer as Team #2. And the rest of the teams arrive one after another: Jet and Cord in third, Leo and Jamal in fourth, John and Jessica in fifth, Flight Time and Big Easy in sixth, and Brendon and Rachel in seventh.

Margie and Luke check in at the Pit Stop much later than the other teams; it’s already dark outside when they finally greet Phil. We also don’t get to see them working on the Detour or Roadblock since it was so obvious they were way behind the other teams. Phil informs them that they are indeed the last team to arrive at the mat and are eliminated from the race. Margie and Luke take the news well. Luke is just appreciative that they are one of three teams that got to participate in the race for a third time.
