Watch Adam Levine and Maroon 5 channel Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in their new music video for their latest single, “Sugar.”

In it, the band surprises random brides and grooms with impromptu performances of the song at the couples’ respective receptions. Wedding Crashers director, David Dobkin directed.

“We’re gonna drive across L.A. and hit every wedding we possibly can,” The Voice coach  says at the beginning of the video. “It’s gonna be awesome.”

At each reception hall, the film crew rushes in and sets up a massive white staging area in front of guests who obviously have no idea what’s going on. The band is suddenly revealed in mid-performance. The reactions are pretty bonkers–from shock to jubilation. The confused older folk gave me the biggest chuckle.

“It was an out of body experience,” Adam described the shoot in a press release. “I had no idea I would be affected by the overwhelming reactions we received from the couples and guests. Being able to create an unforgettable experience for several people was the highlight of it all.”

The director is an “old friend” of Adam’s and said the duo had been planning to collaborate for over a decade. “It was one of the great experiences of my career making the ‘Sugar’ video with Adam and the boys,” he said. “Literally lightning in a bottle.”

The video was shot in a single day on December 16. I’m surprised they could hit so many weddings, considering the set up and break down required at each venue. It must have taken a massive, practiced crew to accomplish the shoot. Also, I kept waiting for a gay couple to pop up. That would have been a nice touch. Although a broad cross section of colors and ethnicities are represented.

“Sugar” is the third single from Maroon 5’s fifth record, 2014’s V.
