Billboard Update (Issue Date: December 23, 2006)

Billboard Update (Issue Date: December 23, 2006)

  • Although DAUGHTRY moves down the Billboard 200 chart from #3 to #7, his sales stay steady at 155, 000 for the week.  DAUGHTRY’s 3 week total is 615, 000.  Platinum status is definitely in DAUGHTRY’s future.
  • The soundtrack to the upcoming movie-musical “Dreamgirls” enters the Billboard 200 at #20.  Jennifer Hudson’s showstopping tune “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” enters the Pop 100 at #98
  • Kimberly Locke’s holiday tune, “Jingle Bells”, is #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.  Way to go Kimberly.
  • First week numbers for Taylor Hicks’ and Fantasia’s recently released debut efforts will be available next week. Hits Daily Double.com has predicted at least 300K for Taylor and 150K for Fantasia.  We’ll see how accurate those predictions are when the numbers begin to roll in on Tuesday.

As always, Ken Barnes’ USA Today Idol Chatter blog has more sales numbers and for more chart news, read Donna Reynolds’ Chart Watch at FoxesonIdol.com.

Finally, some cool Idol tidbits from the Billboard Chart Beat column:

  • Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts” debuted on Top Country Albums the week of Dec. 3, 2005. In its 56th frame on the chart, the album is in its 17th non-consecutive week in the penthouse. That beats the 16-week reign of the Dixie Chicks’ “Home” to make “Some Hearts” the longest-running No. 1 album on the country survey since the soundtrack to “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” had a non-consecutive 35-week run at the top.”
  • [Jennifer] Hudson has never appeared on a Billboard chart under her own name until this week…If Hudson does win an Academy Award, it will partially be due to her stunning rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, ” a song designed to bring down the house if there ever was one. That track debuts on the Pop 100 at No. 93…The debut of her “Dreamgirls” song makes Hudson the 25th contestant from “American Idol” to appear on a Billboard chart. Her season [season 3] was already ahead in terms of number of Idols charted, so Hudson’s appearance on the Pop 100 extends that lead.
