Katharine reveled upc0ming “Smash” guest stars to MTV at last night’s Golden Globe awards, “Well, we have Uma Thurman, who’s not a pop star but a movie star. She’s actually shooting with us already,” she said. “[One Republic frontman] Ryan Tedder is a guest star. So he’s a pop star and an amazing writer. Oh god, and Nick Jonas. We’re doing pretty good for the first season.”

Smash also stars Debra Messing and Angelica Huston

I remember people writing Kat McPhee off from her Idol days.  So yes, there is life outside of the tiny Idol bubble.

Kat is gonna be a stah! Shes come a looong way from House Bunny! I was watching one of the Golden Globe post show recaps this morning and when they showed Kat heading into one of the afterparties the anchor gushed over her and how theres all this buzz around her now.

But no love for international fans …

Well, I’ve poked fun at ol’ Kat on this blog more times than I can count, and I was never a fan of that lame pop music she recorded (her post-AI CD was seriously awful).  But, I’ve always kind of thought she would do well on a scripted TV show. (She’s beautiful, has some innocent-type charm and from the few parts she’s had, it appeared she could act.)

So, color me surprised that not only did I like the show, but I was really rooting for her character.  As in, I’ll be pissed if “Karen” doesn’t get the part instead of Ivy.  LOL, I’m already invested.

I LOVE Anjelica Houston and I’ve always liked Debra Messing.  Plus, I think Jack Davenport is just yummy.  So, I probably would have given this show a shot regardless of the AI connection.  But now, I’m definitely going to put this on the DVR schedule.  That was a solid pilot, and I really enjoyed it.  I got a little bored at the beginning, but it definitely picked up afterward.

I will say that I believe Kat deserves all of the early buzz she’s getting for this role.  She really fits it perfectly.  I was impressed.  It’s interesting to have one of my least favorite AI contestants ever make me like her so much in a different context.

I’ve always secretly hoped that MJ would start covering some scripted shows here, as I only watch a few of the competitive reality shows we usually talk about.  Maybe now with this show having a former Idol as one of its stars, I’ll finally get my wish :) .

I really enjoyed the pilot, but then again I’m a sucker for this kind of thing. I’m a wannabe. This is sophisticated Glee with a real plot, and a true depiction of what life’s like trying to make it in NYC. This is why I worry it won’t work. Katherine McPhee is so good. I remember not caring for her at all during her season,  that was the year Daughtry was booted though..  She caught Steven Spielberg’s eye way back then and he promised he’d make something work for her. I do hope people like this, and I hope that NBC sticks with it as well. If you haven’t taken the time to get the free download, it’s def. worth it!

    Glee is scripted…

  • bentley1530

I am a big musical theater fan and have seen tons of musicals and I really enjoyed this.  However I do not think it will have a huge fan base.  The pool of people who enjoy musicals is not that big when we are talking about TV ratings.  Also I think many theater fans are not going to see all of the “star quality” that would be needed to open a new musical on Broadway in Katherine McPhee.  I felt like the pilot was doing it’s best to make her seem like the perfect choice but I could not quite buy it.

I was so surprised to find myself loving the pilot-Kat does have that innocent quality and she’s gorgeous to boot-great role for her-I too will add it to my DVR schedule.

Oops. Yes, my bad. I should have said “more scripted shows”. I watched the first season of glee, but bailed in season 2.

Loved it!!!  Megan is the obvious Marilyn…Kat has the depth.  If one gets cast soon, what becomes of the other girl?  Or does it take the whole season to decide which one?…like a reality show.  In any case, it’s terrific!!!

I’ve always loved her. Great post. :)

Okay, I watched about 15 minutes and then got kind of bored. Comments off the top of my head: Katharine looks beautiful, who’s dressing Debra Messing…she looks ridiculous.

It’s well produced and adult and sorely lacking in male eye candy. Will it find an audience? NBC is in such freefall even a modest ratings would be seen as a ..smash! Will I watch it? Probably not unless some amazing male lead comes on the scene. The guys who play Kat’s bf and Debra’s hubbie are both awful. But I did see Dylan Baker playing her father. Can’t he be recast as the male lead in some way? KIdding but not really. There just has to be more to this show that the girls competing for the Marilyn role.

If you saw the sizzle reel, you would have all your questions answered. Wow, this really will be a terrific show!   Pretty sure people will be wanting to see more!  TV critics say Ep 2 is really, really good!

I’m probably going to pass on the show. I don’t think I can get into it for episode 2. It’s no reflection on the show but I rarely have the attention span for hour dramas.

Since I’m passing, who’s the hot male lead (this show better have at least one)?

  • Anonymous

I thought I would love it, since I love musicals. Didn’t. Didn’t like Katharine in this. Didn’t like Debra Messing. I really loved Megan Hility [sp?] and Angelica Huston is….Angelica Huston.  Songs are pretty good. But the script is SO weak. The characters are obvious and unshaded. Terrible.
It’s also slow. Very slow. I hope it picks up.

Darn, I was hoping it would be really good.

I love Kat, but I haven’t watched a series in a long time.

Just saw Smash on my big flat screen TV! Wow! Incredible! Kat is so adorable! Great job! Let Me Be Your Star is the bomb! So EPIC! Can’t wait for this series to start!

The show is off to a great start.  I hope the plot and the talent production stays strong.  IMO, Katherine still remains the most beautiful contestant to appear on Idol.

Okay, I normally would NOT be inspired to watch something like this, but decided to give it a robust try.  Gotta tell ya, I am hooked!  I think Kat did a wonderful job with this role and will continue to grow into her character.  By the end of this first season I’d expect her to be ruling the red carpets.  Between her and Taylor Hicks?  Puhleeze America, just admit for once……..you made a ginormous error in judgement.

Puhleeze America, just admit for once……..you made a ginormous error in judgement.

Nope – there was no contest back then between Taylor and Kat – he was the clear winner; America got it right, and he’s still doing quite well in spite of naysayers who love to make him out to be a loser.

That said, Kat is, was, and most likely will ALWAYS be the most beautiful Idol contestant ever, and I am looking forward to this series and hoping for a huge success. Happy to see her find her niche, because I always thought acting was her main goal.

    Go, Kat!

    (Love you, Taylor!)

Downloaded last night and will try to watch tonight.  I think this should be right up Kat’s alley…. acting and singing show tunes.  I hope it works out for her. The guy from NPR reviewing the new slate of mid-season shows gave it a 50/50 shot at success.   He wasn’t sure it would appeal to a broad audience.  Got no clue about that, but they have been promoting the hell out of it. That SHOULD count for something.

Regarding whether American got it wrong or not, I’d have to say that will always be a point of contention no matter the season.   America votes for their fave.  So, in that sense, American always gets it right. ;-)   In terms of musical success, it isn’t Katherine who has had the most success from Season 5.   I’d argue both Daughtry and Pickler have the edge over her.

Wow!  Downloaded Smash free on ITunes and I am blown away by the quality of the pilot. I don’t want to gush, but I can’t recall seeing quality like this on non-cable television.  Fantastic actors, great mix of comedy, drama and music, and Kat McPhee is wonderful in every way.   Can they keep it up over a season?

This show is simply FANTASTIC. What a great pilot that was! Always loved Katharine, so happy that she got this role, she definitely deserve this! Look forward to the show when it airs on TV!! Recommend it to everyone

I just watched the premiere and it was amazing! I came in for Katherine (and some Debra Messing, I’ll admit), but I ended up being invested in both Ivy and Karen. I actually like the pace of the show. It’s like a behind the scenes guide to making a musical. The format also kind of reminds me of SYTYCD or any singing competition – first episode is auditions, second ep is callbacks, etc. At least, that’s what it seems like now. And the preview for the rest of the season looks just as enticing!

Loved it!!!  They have really strong singers in Kat and Megan.  And love all the other characters too.  I hope they keep it up.  And I was stoked to see Alex Wong as one of the dancers. I’m so happy for him.  I’ve recognized a couple more from “So You Think You Can Dance”.  I’m so glad these young artists are beginning to shine!
