…more to come

  • camis

tessanne – redemption song (bob marley)

  • chillj

I kinda wanted James to do the entire Joni Mitchell catalog.

  • Guest

If the X-factor can make a 50 something Lillie look like in her 30’s, then why does The Voice keep styling Tessanne to look like she’s middle age?

  • twodollars

When a Man Loves a Woman and a One Direction song? Is Christina trying to make me hate Matthew? Those are atrocious choices. The Voice Within is Jacqui’s choice but Christina’s style of music just isn’t popular now. It could hurt her.

But, James’s song choice is by far the worst with the Meatloaf tune.

  • twodollars

I love the Hey Brother choice for Will. Wish one of the contestant’s I like got that choice instead.

  • Adrian Sewell

I think Will has great song choices

  • cheese

Adam must have picked Meatloaf, I think – WTF. James’ version of Fell in Love with a Girl is cool, though. Love the instrumentation.

One Direction is a bit weird for Matthew, but it’s probably smart and of course he’s going to sound better than at least 3/5 of them.

  • twodollars

I think James may have picked that song. He has a love of cheesy rock songs and that Meatloaf song fits that niche perfectly.

One Direction is a bizarre choice. Maybe they are hoping Matthew will be able to pull it off like he did with Miley’s Wrecking Ball?

  • Miss Blue

I love the choices for Will and Jacquie. Like the White Striped choice for James, undecided on the Meatloaf tune. Not a fan of the choices for Matthew.

  • Matthew Kitson

Awful choices for James, could be in trouble

  • Blirel

  • jpfan2

Wow, I love Hey Brother. This must be the first time the song is getting much exposure because it hasn’t been released as a single anywhere. Fantastic choice.

  • Amy Beth

    Last 4 songs:

    Redemption song–Bob Marley
    Unconditionally–Katy Perry

    Better Man-James Morrison
    Rich Girl–Hall & Oates

I’m assuming the 1st 2 are Tessanne and the 2nd 2 are Cole.

  • twodollars

That’s my favorite song choice of the night by far. Cole’s Better Man is my second. I think Cole and Will will be safe and we’ll lose Matthew and someone else I like better (Tessanne or Jacquie).

  • Matthew Kitson

Jacquie is positioned to do very well with those choices

  • Jake W.

I love Jacquie’s choices. Matthew has a good choice with that One Direction song.

  • girlygirl

Were the contestants required to pick one old song and one current (ish) song?

  • EAP

When did Cole sing “Africa”? Because that’s the one I saw on iTunes

  • Blirel

and here is my final itunes predicts/preview

Tessanne Chin – Team Adam – “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley,- sounds good love stripped reggae sound- itunes ranking # 12 “Unconditionally” by Katy Perry- great sound first commercial given song great job Adam genius pick= itunes ranking of # 5 According to itunes performances this week she will have a monster night

Cole Vosbury – Team Blake – “Rich Girl” by Hall & Oats,- sounds good on itunes cheezy and boring just like ray last week so it could make him go home imma say for- itunes ranking # 55
“Better Man” by James Morrison- not on itunes but great choice that finally fits him makes another top ten as tess i think will crack it so imma say – #10

  • twodollars

Is Better Man the only song you are predicting to crack the top 10?

  • Amy Beth

That was the song from his montaged Battle round.

  • Blirel

no i also predicted unconditionally but i think will can crack the top ten too but tess and will sounded the best i m not even sure about cole becuz better man isnt on there yet but i listened to original and it sounds good

  • Tom22

Jacquie could have trouble with the softer quality of christinas song. It will say a lot more about her talent if she pulls it off. It would be great to see her do a super job with it

  • carola99

I love “Story of My Life” and I hope Matthew´s sings it well and makes it his own.
But I am worried that Christina chose “When a Man Loves a Woman”.
Sigh…That song is too old fashioned and could send Matthew home tomorrow for good.
I am predicting a James, Will and possibly Matthew bottom three with these song choices.
    The rest will move on..

  • Blirel

  • Tom22

I think Coles songs will be amazing. Of course if his voice doesn’t excite you on his prior performances these won’t either. I haven’t found his songs boring because they have been about how special things are more than the feeling of loss … even if the words dont say that his tone and caress of the syllables do for me

  • ealbino

OMG what is wrong with Christina giving Matthew those song choices??? Damn it she’s killing his chance of winning…grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • ealbino

    I hope you’re right about Matthew :(

  • Lori

She might be trying to appeal to two different audiences. Not sure if that’s the best strategy though because it confuses the audience as to exactly what kind of artist Matthew will be.

  • Valentin432

Cry Baby (and all the Joplin tunes) are tough to pull off, she needs loads of passion to deliver this song because I think it could feel very flat. Reading Slezak’s reaction will be fun given his love for Jacquie and Allison (from Idol S8)
I don’t like the Xtina song, but it isn’t a bad choice for getting votes.

James is continuing his trend of cool indie songs paired with some strange cheesy classic rock tune. I think he will do very well with the WS song but what will make him succeed or not will be how well he pull IWDAFL.

I love Matthew’s song choices (in the context of the show), I think he’s going to have a great week on Itunes and on the votes.

I can’t imagine Will pulling off convincingly ACIGC, after all the (great) versions I’ve heard in these shows. Hey Brother is a great choice but for some reason Will seems to have more success with the songs out of his genre, hope he bucks the trend with this.

Tess is at risk, very hard to pull off Bob Marley, saw a lot of horrible versions of his songs on these shows. Katy songs is a big pop ballad that she can pull off but won’t be very exciting.

Cole and Blake are definetly playing it safe. I guess it’s wise considering his success so far.

  • Landon Cox

Do people really care about that on this show though?

  • carola99

I agree. It´s a shame though if Matthew goes home tomorrow. Christina might not be as good with strategy.
There is a reason why Blake has won this show so many times and she hasn´t.

  • Chucky333

Trevin’s When a man loves a woman sold well on Itunes and I believe Matthew’s version will do better and his Story of my life will sell well as well because there are a lot of One Direction fans who would buy it.

  • wonderings

Seems that way, doesn’t it? I thought it was supposed to be contestant’s choice and “mentor’s” choice….

  • Guest

    Christina Aguilera ?@xtina42m
Hey @OneDirection! Hope you’re watching @NBCTheVoice tonight. @MSchulerMusic’s doing great version of #StoryOfMyLife. Go #TeamXtina!

  • Guest

    YES.

  • Blirel

u know this is not twitter or any social networking website right?

  • wonderings

Jacquie: I liked these choices on paper, but much less after listening to the itunes previews. Her tone suffers when compared with Christina and Janis and Allison Iraheta, imo. Overly ambitious choices — you’re not going to improve upon the original by singing it straight (which it sounds like she’s doing here)

James: White Stripes: yes, Meatloaf: no. But I’m looking forward to some entertaining staging & drama on the Meatloaf selection! Saleswise the Stripes win.

Matthew: The One Direction choice is evil genius & I think this will be the highest charting Voice tune on itunes this week. Uber popular boy band, album released just last WEEK, romantic theme, plus he sounds great on the preview. As for “When a Man” – I’m going to compare him to Joshua Ledet on this which is basically an automatic loss.

  • wonderings

The 1D choice is *money* & I think it wlll get him another week on the show. I do feel a little bad that Matthew doesn’t get to go with his indie leanings this week….

  • ealbino

    I agree

  • ealbino

He does pick songs that showcase his people but also he has that HUGE fan base that may vote no matter what they sound like.. LOL

  • wonderings

Evil genius, I say. If this gets tweeted to their followers, Matthew’s itunes position could skyrocket.

    Reminder:

Let’s keep the convo focused on tonight’s song spoilers. Thanks.

  • straycat108

Rich Girl by Hall and Oats for Cole? NO, NO, NO! Blake what are you thinking?

  • Blirel

    may i ask u a question @mjsbigblog

  • crackinthewall

You can say the same for Adorn which was another seemingly WTF choice from Blake but surprisingly it worked well for Cole. It charted really high so I’ll wait and see what Cole will do with Rich Girl.

  • straycat108

These tired song choices, like Rich Girl, A Change is Gonna Come, and When a Man Loves a Woman, are what has killed American Idol. The Voice has been succeeding because it is current. Don’t start following the American Idol formula. You’re going to start losing viewers.

  • Blirel

may i ask @mj or @sirmac a question or someone from the blog i will be back at 10 30 eastern to ask u

  • crackinthewall

Or it could also backfire. Matthew needs to be terribly brilliant with that song or it would just boost One Direction’s album or single sales.

  • Nicholas Vandeloecht

This night is going to come down to the performances, but based on the iTunes songs this is what I’m calling for the Top 6 (and I’m also calling that one singer will be eliminated instead of two):

    1. Matthew Schuler- He sounded great on both recordings, and while one song choice gives him a soulful approach (When a Man…), the other will allow him to dig into that emotional side of himself. He won’t have the number 1 song of the group, but he bounces back in a big way tonight.

    2. Will Champlin- The element of surprise won’t carry on with Sam Cooke’s song (given its similarities to At Last), but obviously that bluesy style works really well for him. And I’m not too crazy about the Avicii choice but I think he will deliver a solid performance. All in all though, he comes down a little bit from that Cloud 9/

    3. Jacquie Lee- She killed it on the Joplin recording (and I’m predicting that will be the best-selling song on iTunes) but The Voice Within sounds like another Clarity disaster in the making. I think the latter song will sink to the sewers while the former keeps her in this competition.

    4. Cole Vosbury- Solid choices on both ends, and he can deliver that same ol’ Cole soul. My only worry is that the song choices don’t showcase as much variance as the other contestants’ decisions.

    5. Tessanne Chin- Bob Marley sounds great, but the Katy Perry not so much. Fortunately for Tessanne, only one singer is going home (I’m presuming) and so her more contemporary choices (compared to number 6) will keep her in the hunt.

    6. James Wolpert- James, you are my favorite, and I love you, and I still think you’re the best vocalist as far as raw emotion. But no matter how perfectly you sing Meat Loaf, there is no way in the world that you can sell that to America. I hope to God I’m wrong, but that’s way too campy this late in the competition and because I don’t think the other choice is strong enough to keep him afloat, this is where you end your road and crush my soul. (ELIMINATED)

  • crackinthewall

To be fair, Story of My Life is one of the Mumfordsy songs on Midnight Memories so it doesn’t really stray that far from Matthew’s indie roots.

  • wonderings

It could, but I don’t think it will. Ah, we shall see soon enough!

  • Matthew Kitson

Well, shame on me, because James owned it

  • Madilo

    That’s what happened

  • Madilo

Looks like their fans did not watch the show or they did not care for Matthew’s version.

  • wonderings

    Yes, I was wrong!

Matthew has lost some of his mojo (vocal & otherwise) lately…
