Another Update!: Reader Chachi just got an email from DavidCookOfficial.com:

Hey guys,

As promised, I wanted you to be the first to know the name of the first single so here it is:

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be able to hear it real soon!

Stay tuned to DavidCookOfficial.com next week for more details!

Ok, so we’ll be getting “details” next week. I’m thinking, Maybe we’ll get a streaming preview similar to what David Archuleta did with “Crush”.

But, like I said below, the song is not coming out next Tuesday…

***

That information I posted a few hours ago regarding David Cook’s single via Rickey.org?

According to my source, David Cook’s new single is NOT COMING OUT on Tuesday.

I can’t get confirmation of the single name.

None of this information has been officially confirmed. More will be revealed in the very near future.

That’s all I got…

  • Layla

oh Rats! Well I’v eused up my quota of excitement for the week.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

Hey, MJ…I just got an email from David Cook official:

DAVID COOK OFFICIAL: MYSPACE | YOUTUBE
    LATEST NEWS FROM DAVID COOK

    Hey guys,

As promised, I wanted you to be the first to know the name of the first single so here it is:

It’s called “Light On” and you’ll be able to hear it real soon!

Stay tuned to DavidCookOfficial.com next week for more details!

    Thanks,

    ~D

Hopefully, that helps clear *something* up?

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

    chachi,

I was getting ready to post that and you beat me to it. :) Well, at least we got confirmation on the title.

  • Layla

Okay…what’s up? Are we gettin’ a single or what?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Yes it does. Thanks.

  • ptslittlecomment

Okay, I erased my comment about the way the news was released and the name. But I am still confused about the timing. Does “real soon” = next week or not? DC is turning out to be quite a man of mystery!

  • Trina

At least it confirms the name and says something about next week. Maybe he told whoever he spoke to day heard him mention next week and took that to mean we would hear it next week.

  • TheTruth

It’s true – email just in.

Either they planned it like this or he let slip and the web nerds went ‘danggggg…better get the email out NOW!’

    Either way, I’m smiling.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I bet we get to hear it next week. But it’s not being officially released anywhere…

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I keep re-wording my post. I think I’ve got it right. And I think we have all the information we’re going to get for the weekend…

  • Layla

checked my mails and I received the newsletter too! Light On is an “interesting” title Somehow I expected something with a bit more mystique and “word-nerdy”. I will forgive him if the single is all that.

    Cannot wait!

  • David_Cook_Rocks

That’s weird. I was at Ford Day today and standing right next to David when he was talking about it. I wish I got it on video. He told us the name of the song was “Light On” and said it was coming out mid next week. We didn’t ask him to elaborate on what “coming out” meant.

  • Jolene

OK, so let me get this straight – the single not being “out” next week – could that just mean no official release to iTunes, but still premiered on radio or somewhere else? Because I really wasn’t expecting it to go on sale yet, but I can’t figure out if the info means we don’t get to hear it either…

  • ptslittlecomment

Thank you Layla, you just helped me pinpoint my feelings about “Light On”. The title seems too easy, too generic for DC. But I will be the first to overlook the title if the song is anywhere near the greatness I know Cook is capable of performing.

  • Lisa

LOL his webteam are scrambling to cover the *oops* from this morning! :laugh_tb:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

but I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t figure out if the info means we donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get to hear it eitherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I don’t know Jolene. I posted how it was worded to me. My source would not be more specific. “iTunes or radio?” I asked and I could not get anything more specific. We may still get to hear it.

  • Jolene

David_Cook_Rocks, will you be posting a recap of the Ford Day anywhere? I’m so curious about how the whole thing went and how you and Desi got to hear the exciting news.

I guess, as always, we’ll just wait and see what will and won’t come out. I’m crossing my fingers that we do get to hear the song, which is all I thought was going to happen anyway… But I can wait a little more if need be.

  • Aileen

I don’t think the name “Light On” is simple at all. It can take on a million different meanings.

David never was one to have complicated titles for his songs.

How word nerdy are: The Truth, Silver, Makeover, Searchlights, Stitches, Let Go, I actually could go on forever ;) .

I think we all have to wait and see.

  • smartcookie

I betcha “Light On” is about leaving one on for someone who is or is not coming home. As opposed to a more ET-like meaning which none of us wants to hear.

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for release next week. Even if it’s Friday of next week.

  • Michelle

Lisa, that was my first thought when I saw the email just now. “Ooops! deploy email!”

  • ptslittlecomment

    Aileeen

You are right, David does tend to have simple titles for his heartfelt songs.

    Smartcookie:

Whenever I hear any version of the phrase “leave the light on” I think back to my childhood and those Motel 6 commericals with Tom Bodett. Hopefully I am the only one that will be reminded of that charmingly cornball ad when I hear DC’s song.

  • Trina

LOL his webteam are scrambling to cover the *oops* from this morning!

That’s exactly what I think is going on and I would imagine anyone else connected knowing about the slip-up will try and downplay things. David himself saying “coming out mid next week” is a far cry from not coming out. If he genuinely did slip, well it happens, he’s human. Or maybe he’s confused. Where did the Tuesday rumor come from anyway?

  • sarcasticgirl

I’m in the camp thinking we’ll get a radio premiere next week but it won’t be officially release or go for adds until October. Just so long as we get to hear it.

“Light On” is an odd name. Can’t tell much about the song from it though. I just hope it is awesome.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m still keeping my fingers crossed for release next week. Even if ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Friday of next week.

iTunes singles drop on Tuesday. Official radio releases are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. And, if there was an official radio release, we would have heard about it already.

I’m betting…and this is just me guessing…the song will be premiered on Ryan Seacrest’s show or AOL or something like that.

  • Jolene

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m bettingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and this is just me guessingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦the song will be premiered on Ryan Seacrestà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show or AOL or something like that.

That is exactly what I assumed… So if what the source said doesn’t negate that, It’s peachy.

I only have Crush to compare to (didn’t follow single releases earlier), but that premiered on radio (not officialy going for adds for over a month afterwards), then took at least a week to go on sale.

I would’ve been very concerned if the single went to iTunes so quickly and with so little promotion preceding it’s release, so this makes perfect sense.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

David himself saying à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“coming out mid next weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a far cry from not coming out. If he genuinely did slip, well it happens, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s human. Or maybe heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s confused. Where did the Tuesday rumor come from anyway?

Rickey reported that the song will be released next week. I’m hearing that it’s not being released, not on Tuesday. If it’s not being released on Tuesday, that more than likely rules out iTunes, because they release on Tuesdays.

I’m betting that it’s some radio or webnet streaming deal so the fans can hear it.

  • EmmaJK

LOL, David! I know he’s a smart, savvy guy, but he’s also young and very new at all of this. I wonder if he really did just make a rather enthusiastic mistake in mentioning the single, or if he’s deliberately trying to drive all of his fans crazy.

  • s3rious

Alright! Best of Luck to David Cook. I’m sure his single will do extremely well, particularly if all his fans support it. :thumbup_tb:

    Light On!

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m betting that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s some radio or webnet streaming deal so the fans can hear it.

That would be my guess too.

  • Rickey

    Hey guys,

I updated my post as I talked to my “source” again who was at the meet and greet for Ford Day. She said that David Cook said that the new single is called “Light On” and it will be released next week. (Crowd cheered). When asked for details he said “midweek”.

It’s possible that he just misspoke, but let’s hope that a “Crush”-like preview happens next week. Waiting for an “announcement of when it comes out” sounds kinda lame when he already said that there is going to be a single.

Just wanted to drop in so you guys don’t think I’m giving wrong information. That’s what David said, so we’ll see what happens.

    Cheers!

    Rickey

    Not any more. :wink_ee:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

One more thing: When I hear that a song is going to be “released” I think iTunes and radio. Playing a song on the radio once is not “releasing” it in the strict sense of the word. David may have a looser meaning of the word “release”. LOL.

  • Rickey

    “Coming out”?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Coming outà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

    What?

Ricky, I wasn’t necessarily doubting what you heard. But when I repeated it, and then heard it might not be true, from an excellent source, by the way, I had to update my prior post. Lots of people had the idea they’d be able to get their hands on the song next week, and that may not be the case.

  • cheese

I never thought it would be available for purchase next week. I bet they were planning to announce the title, a radio premier date (similar to the Z100 premier for “Crush”) and maybe an “official add” or download date early next week. I hope we get info on who wrote it, too (I’m assuming David, but I’m curious about any co-writers)

Playing a song on the radio once is not à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“releasingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ it in the strict sense of the word. David may have a looser meaning of the word à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“releaseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . LOL.

That’s probably what’s going on. Although, I doubt it would be played only once – didn’t z100 and a bunch of other stations add “Crush” beginning on the premier date, weeks before it officially went for adds?

I still think it’s weird that the song isn’t listed on allaccess yet, but maybe it’s because the title was shrouded in secrecy.

  • CathyMK

David’s mentioning the title may not have been an “oops”- probably they had already decided to send out the emails today and told him it was fine to mention it. “Coming out” could easily just mean that we would finally get to hear it. Are radio premieres always on Tuesdays too?

  • Jolene

I actually think the web nerds (hey, that’s what Dave’s calling them!) are the ones who made the “Oops”.
I think they were supposed to send the e-mails earlier, and David probably thought they were already out when he talked to the girls.
That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it!

  • leome

Why is everyone assuming David let it slip out? I bet he said it because he was supposed to say it. He knew the email was going out today so he shared it with those that were there.
Remember that last week we got the news on the site on Friday but the official word was just out on Monday?
I think this is the case too. He shares with the fans a few days before.
So, I’m sure there’s no “ups” moment here. It was planned.

I think what Rickey and MJ are saying actually coincides. Maybe David used the word release, but what he means is that we’ll get to hear it.

Makes sense if he’s going to be on Ryan next week. Plus, David said the single would be released mid-october, if it debuts on radio next week it’s the perfect timing to be released 3 weeks later.

So yeah, i think everyone is right.

  • Kirsten

Official radio releases are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

I’m totally Miss Pedantic today, but radio add dates are Monday and Tuesday. AC/HAC/AAA and Country add on Mondays. The rest add on Tuesdays.

I agree that it is probably too late in the week to announce an offical add date, but they might just have a premiere. “Crush” premiered on Z100 on August 1st which was a Friday. Who knows?

  • David_Cook_Rocks

I definitely remember David saying it’s “coming out” mid week rather than “released”. Don’t know exactly what that means.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Thanks for the correction.

    I definitely remember David saying ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“coming outà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ mid week rather than à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“releasedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know exactly what that means.

David may have his own special meaning for that phrase. LOL. We’ll find out next week what it means. :) .

  • CathyMK

    “à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crushà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ premiered on Z100 on August 1st which was a Friday.”

Thank you Kirsten- I thought I remembered that Crush premiered on a Fri., but I couldn’t remember the actual date. So, if Light On is premiering next Friday, they’ve just given us the info 1 week ahead of time. Given how closely guarded virtually any info about Cook’s record is, that doesn’t seem unreasonable.

  • maturin

IIR, these were the steps for the release of Archie’s tune.

First, there was an announcement that said “Archie’s new release is called Crush and the first time we will play it publicly is on x radio show on x day.”

Then, with fanfare, Archie was on the radio show and they spun the tune. The song was also streamed (but not downloadable) from the radio station web site on the same day.

The record co also announced the date they would start selling it on iTunes, which was 3 to 4 weeks later.

In the interim, naturally, the tune became widespread around the web as an mp3 “in the wild.” And entered many of our iPods.

Maturin writes a long pedantic post here about the fact that record execs don’t seem to realize that 1 public play means the song is now digitally available for free, which is why I disagree with their strategy of delaying the date you can buy the tune so long after the first public spin. But do they listen to me? No. :-0

Crush is released to radio and soon begins to chart.

Finally, about a month after it’s first online debut, the single becomes available for purchase via iTunes. And does terrif! We all bought it despite having a free copy because failing to pay Archie would be like clubbing a kitten to death with a baby seal.

Single aside, the name and release date for Archie’s album as a whole remain in play (contradictory dates mentioned, no name).

So, I would think we just don’t know yet which, if any, of these steps will happen next week for Cook. Could be one, several or all (thought the last seems unlikely, because of precedent and because iTunes and radio release dates are usually stated in advance as described by MJ and others upthread).

    I’m think of chillin’, chillun!

  • cheese

I think “Crush” was available to buy on 8/12, 11 days after its “premier” and well ahead of its official add date. I hope there’s a similar pattern for “Light On”

  • Kirsten

Somebody shoot me now. I’m totally Miss Pedantic.

“Crush” was available on iTunes August 12th (11 days after first appearing on the radio). It may have felt like a month for his fans, though.

    MJ’s Crush Notice

ETA: Phew! Cheese beat me to the Pedantic Button first. The official add date was in September.

Maturin, I think they may have been listening to you. :) . Because the announcement of the iTunes release was kind of abrupt…early reports/rumors, I believe, had “Crush” being released to radio on 8/11 or 12 and the release to iTunes on 9/2. Then the dates switched. And there wasn’t a lot of time between the iTunes announcement, and when it was actually released. I think they figured it would be a good idea to release it to iTunes sooner rather than later because the demand was there.

In my opinion, “Light On” will be released to iTunes rather quickly after it’s debut.

Ok, I went looking and the first mention of Archie’s iTunes release date on the blog was August 8, only 4 days before the actual release. There was no giant announcement in the media of the impending date, it just seemed to happen. In fact, I questioned it, because I was still working under the assumption that the radio release was August 11.

Unless a huge piece of news escaped me for several days, there sure wasn’t much lead time for Archie’s iTunes release. Not that it mattered.

  • spritely

Cook doesn’t usually slip and say things. He seems to know exactly what he’s doing most of the time, and even when he reveals (as someone elsewhere said today), he conceals. I love it. Mr. Mysterious. I also love the name of the song. Can’t wait to hear it!

Man, it’s nice to see him looking happy, relaxed, and young.

  • EmmaJK

Man, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nice to see him looking happy, relaxed, and young.

Word. Just wanted to agree with this. He seems to have de-aged about 10 years in the last week. He’s adorable in the hat, vest and sneakers.

  • tigervixxxen

From what I understand the reason to delay iTunes release after a radio premiere is to build up radio audience. In doing so they time the release of the sale of the single while there is already a radio audience and it drives up the Hot 100 number because its comprised of both sales and radio audience impressions. Releasing them all on the same day would have resulted in Archie premiering a lot lower than #2. We all know that even though Crush didn’t go for adds until the 2nd it was already getting decent spin on the radio right after its premiere. I would see a similar strategy working for Cook: premiere the song, iTunes sales, radio adds.

I understand the why wait to offer the single for sale when people are going to rip the song off the internet for free argument, but it seems like a great majority of people who took the free file did go on to purchase a single, so it seems like it made little difference in the long run.

Anyhow, its interesting to keep track of and thanks MJ for providing the information!

Hearsd the rumour that Chris Cornell wrote “Light ON”…has anyone heard anything to substatiate this rumour?

Hearsd the rumour that Chris Cornell wrote à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light ONà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦has anyone heard anything to substatiate this rumour?

Layla, where did you hear that?
I did hear that Rolling Stone had a blurb where it was said there will be a CC song on David’s album, but who says it’s Light On? Curious…
I’d actually rather have a song David wrote all on his own as a first single, personally.

  • Layla

Hey Jolene, it’s really being talked about on the new official site where former TWoP “refugees” (as they call themselves) now have a new hang out.

The rumor is that it was either written by CC or for CC.

  • Layla

    I don’t know Jolene,

I too would rather hear a DC endeavour, but CC has a LOT of cred in the music world, so having an AI sing a song of his would be kinda cool.

  • Jolene

Hey Jolene, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s really being talked about on the new official site where former TWoP à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“refugeesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (as they call themselves) now have a new hang out.

Thanks Layla, just saw the source for the info on the new TWoPer board (BTW, Yay! It’s awesome) and it seems legit. I can’t imagine how DC would have a song called Light On when CC was said to have one, if it’s not the same song…
As long as it’s good and has potential as first single, I’ll make my peace with it not being written by DC.

  • Trina

I posted about the CC rumor in the other Light On thread. It doesn’t appear that CC actually wrote it – I got the impression it was written for him.

  • Layla

    Thanks Trina,

we need to consildate where we can find the rumours! :tongue1_tb:
