ETA: More from the FOX press release:

Next week, the Top 7 finalists à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Kris Allen, Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Lil Rounds à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ take the stage Tuesday, April 14 (8:00-9:01 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) to perform songs of the cinema under the guidance of director Quentin Tarantino in an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idols at the Moviesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ -themed performance show.

Tune in the following night Wednesday, April 15 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) to find out if the judges use their save or if America sends another finalist home. Also, Season Three finalist Jennifer Hudson returns to the IDOL stage to perform her new single, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If This Isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Love,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and Miley Cyrus will sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Climbà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hannah Montana: The Movie.”

Quentin Tarantino was a guest judge for Season 3′s Top 8 movie theme.   He’s a total American Idol geek, so this should be a lot of fun.

I just got done watching American Idol Extra and Jillian Reynolds just announced that next week’s theme will be:

Songs from the Movies

What do you think?   Any ideas on what the Idols should sing?

  • Jackfan143

Matt needs to do something from the big Chill or a slow romantic song. He hasn’t done that yet.

  • laura11383

Ooh, fun theme! I’ll have to think about that. Should be a good week for Adam.

  • MissM

If Adam doesn’t do “Is Anybody Listening” from his movie with Val Kilmer, I will be shocked.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvwcJUhIa0U

  • http://airincaol.com coco

I want Adam to do Viva Las Vegas……Adam are you hearing me????

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Adam or Kris…”Scarlet Tide” from Cold Mountain. This was a Grammy nominated song written by Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett. Deep, Haunting Lovely

  • http://www.youtube.com/thenovicepianist TNP

Hmm who knows how broad this theme will actually be..

    Regardless, I’m super excited.

  • Michelle

Aw, no Jason Mraz? Oh well… Fun theme, if broad. (not as bad as “whatever you want that has been downloaded” week, though)

  • colette

There’s a lotta drek in this category, kids. watch out.

some of the better recent (as in the past 30 years or so) Oscar winners/nominees:

    “Take My Breath Away”

    “The Time of My Life”

    “Things Have Changed” (Bob Dylan)

“Mean Green Mother From OUt of Space” (paging Adam!)

“Let’s Hear It For the Boy” (fun tune!)

“On the Road Again” (Willie Nelson)

“The Look of Love” (anybody up to that???)

and hey, if you get creative and bypass the Oscars there’s:

    “Mrs. Robinson” (Simon & Garfunkel)

“Yellow Submarine, Help, You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away and everything from Hard Day’s Night, which is a gold mine of great Beatle tunes

and everything from musicals galore, including: “Hairspray,” “Rent,” “Evita,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Footloose,” “Dirty Dancin’……”

  • lakerchristinee

Someone suggested My Heart will Go On for Adam. If he picks that, he will be the winner. Actually, he is already the winner. Let me reiterate: Adam will be the guaranteed winner of this season.

  • Trina

I’ll lay $20 down on Lil singing one of the overdone Whitney/”The Bodyguard” songs.

  • Hoppy

If Lil does something from Dreamgirls, I will drive to Los Angeles and slap her myself.

  • jtgraffix

adam – uninvited – alanis morisette – city of angels
    danny – i believe i can fly – r kelly – space jam
lil – wind beneath my wings – bette midler – beaches
allison – it must’ve been love – roxette – pretty woman
anoop – go the distance – michael bolton – hercules
matt – canned heat – jamiroquai – napoleon dynamite
kris – everything i do – bryan adams – robin hood

  • hypertwink

This is going to be fun, a trainwreck or most likely, both. I hope Adam goes for a song from Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Little Shop of Horrors.

Points to anyone who sings The Working Song from Enchanted. Speaking of which, Kris should go all romantic and sing So Close.

And Danny should sing It’s Hard Out There for the Pimped, or whatever it’s titled.

  • imatter

Anoop sings the Oscar winning song from “Hustle & Flow”.

Lil Rounds might go for the James Bond soundtracks or Dianna Ross or Disney’s Lion King book or Prince of Egypt.

Alison should rock Bette Midler’s “The Rose”. Imagine her going Janis Joplin on a song about Janis Joplin??!!! She’d kill it.

Will Danny Gokey please do “Wings Beneath My Wings”?

  • karrahbrooke

I know when people think of Rent they usually think of the Broadway show rather than the movie, but I would love to hear someone do “One Song Glory”. Particularly Kris. If Lil sings “My Heart Will Go On” or “I Have Nothing” I think she should be sent home automatically. I’d like to hear Allison sing “Stay (I Missed You)” by Lisa Loeb, from Reality Bites. Or maybe “Right Kind of Wrong” from Coyote Ugly. Although it’s not really AI appropriate, “Dancing in the Sheets” from Footloose would be cool for Adam. I think it’d be kinda cool to hear a guy do a really stripped down version of “Only Hope” from A Walk to Remember.

  • Dlynne

I’d love for Adam or Allison to sing Decode by Paramore from the Twilight soundtrack.

Actually, I hope they all choose songs from more current movies, say the last five years or so. Otherwise, I’m afraid it will be a major trainwreck.

I have a feeling that Matt won’t be able to refrain from picking a song from a Disney movie. I just hope it’s not painful to watch.

  • Kirsten

    Songs from the Movies

Well, from past experience from AI seasons of yore, this theme means “Any Song Ever Written”. Because, sooner or later, maybe in just some indie film uploaded to youtube, every song known to mankind has been featured in a move somewhere. And given the leeway there was for “Top Downloads”, I suspect that anything goes this week too.

OOO! Triple bonus, “Against All Odds”, one of the AI instant trainwreck songs will be definitely be in play this week. It made an apperance during movie night during S1 and S2. The Idolettes avoided it during birth year, will the producers trick anybody into selecting it this year? Stay tuned.

“I have Nothing” from the Bodyguard and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from Armageddon are also popular movie songs from seasons past. I pity the fool that decides to tackle those.

Someone suggested My Heart will Go On for Adam.

We know it’s been cleared. Diana DeGarmo sang that for movie night in S3.

  • Tracy

Does anyone if the songs from Rent have even been cleared? It would be interesting to hear one of them on the show.

  • Kirsten

Does anyone if the songs from Rent have even been cleared?

Last year, on the Idol Gives Back show, they sang “Seaons of Love” from Rent as a group song: Seasons of Love

  • maracaibo

I actually think Matt could do very well with this theme.
I think this week he should go back to the piano and do a slow romantic song.
That would be perfectl! Go Matty G!

  • haruhi

Please, I just hope no one sings, “My Heart Will Go On.” :)

  • Tracy

Thanks, Kirsten. Shows how much I pay attention. D’oh!

  • hypertwink

Since Matt is a Disneyphile, I hope he knows the perfect song for him in their repertoire. But if I was doing the choosing, I want him to do:

    I Don’t Dance (HSM 2)
    Kiss The Girl (Little Mermaid)

Points to anyone who sings Winnie the Pooh’s Little Black Rain Cloud or The Jungle Book’s Bare Necessities. That would be awesome. And why do I sense that someone is going to sings Mulan’s True to Your Heart? Danny’s voice would probably be good on Mulan’s I’ll Make a Man Out of You. Adam should sing Poor Unfortunate Souls, and he has to wear black and a cape that simulates tentacles.

  • haruhi

…and just to add another song I hope nobody sings, please, no “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from Grease.

  • mastriod2000

Even though its predictable I don’t think Lil will go with Whitney. A good choice for Lil would be “Not Gon Cry” by Mary J. Blige from the “Waiting To Exhale” soundtrack. I think that song is perfect.

I love movie theme week. I would only say 3 people IMO have done well with “I Have Nothing” and thats Jennifer, Treynce, and Vonzell. I liked Lakeisha but just not her version. Lil I hope stays away from this song and just the whole “The Bodyguard” Album period. I love Lil but I really don’t want her to attempt Whitney when she has other great songs at her disposal.

If Lil wants to do Whitney I think a slow song like “Count On Me” from Waiting to Exhale is good too.

I’m not a fan of Matt but I think “Patience” from Dreamgirls The Movie soundtrack would be great for him.

“Love You I Do” I think would be okay for Lil.

  • Anastasia72071

ROFL to Trina and Hoppy’s comments!!! I’m totally with you.

Lil drives me nuts (and not in a good way). Okay, to be fair, they all do except for Allison. Adam on the other hand, drives me to distraction, in a *good* way. I love it all – the hair, the eyeliner, the ‘Eye of Horus’ tattoo (& not only because my one tattoo is nearly identical, lol), the quiet low-key performances and the craaazy way-theatrical performances. Glam rock, punk rock or floppy-haired jeans-n-tshirt – It’s ALL good.

I agree that ‘songs from the movies’ is likely to have a large trainwreck element – mainly because nearly everyone seems to be floundering like fish tossed up on shore in the wake of Adam’s seriously-superior talent. Am I the only one who thought that on Tuesday a lot of them seemed to be attempting (very badly) to emulate Adam’s vocal style?

  • Daytripper73

Diana DeGarmo did “My Heart Will Go On” during season 3 and talked about it during AI Rewind. She basically said just before she went onstage the reality hit her that she’d picked a huge, iconic song and was only going to have a minute and 30 seconds to try to do justice to it. She said she knew even before she hit the stage that she’d made a BIG mistake.
Hopefully nobody stumbles into the same trap, although Adam might be able to get away with it.

Allison is almost going to have to “lighten up” in order to avoid another ridiculous critique from Simon, who will surely pound on that subject until she acquiesces. That Footloose song suggested upthread, “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” might not be a bad choice if she can switch the arrangement up enough so that it doesn’t sound too dated.

  • hypertwink

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and just to add another song I hope nobody sings, please, no à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hopelessly Devoted to Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from Grease.

But if Allison sings Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee or Grease 2′s Cool Rider, I will be a fan for life. Oh that reminded me, I would wish for Lil to do Making Whoopee or any of the sexy songs Michelle Pfeiffer sang in The Fabulous Baker Boys but I don’t think she can give it justice.

  • RemusL

I expect Adam to stay far away from songs that come from actual movie musicals, unless the musical in question is derived from a collection of pop songs. Which means no to Phantom, Evita, Rent, Hairspray, etc. but possible yes to Mamma Mia since it’s essentially a collection of ABBA songs and Across The Universe (Beatles). Another exception to the no songs from musical rule for Adam may be Hair, the original rock musical.

Otherwise, we’re looking at movie theme songs, of which there are a ton.

Danny already did Kiss From A Rose (Batman Forever) during Hollywood Week so that’s out.

    Here are some possibilities:

John Parr – Man In Motion [St. Elmo's Fire]
Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings [Beaches]
Tina Turner – We Don’t Need Another Hero [Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome]
Duran Duran – A View To A Kill [A View To Kill]
Survivor – Eye Of The Tiger [Rocky III]
Bryan Adams – Everything I Do, I Do For You [Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves]
Vanessa Williams – Colors Of The Wind [Pocahontas]
Elton John – Can You Feel The Love Tonight? [The Lion King]
Peter Cetera – Glory Of Love [Karate Kid II]
Yvonne Elliman – If I Can’t Have You [Saturday Night Fever]
Bee Gees – How Deep Is Your Love [Saturday Night Fever]
Olivia Newton-John – Hopelessly Devoted To You [Grease]
Bryan Adams – Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman [Don Juan Demarco]
Whitney Houston – I’ll Always Love You [The Bodyguard]
Huey Lewis & The News – The Power Of Love [Back To The Future]
Glenn Frey – The Heat Is On [Beverly Hills Cop]
Berlin – Take My Breath Away [Top Gun]
Irene Cara – What A Feeling [Flashdance]
Sheena Easton – For Your Eyes Only [For Your Eyes Only]
Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle – A Whole New World [Aladdin]
Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram – Somewhere Out There [An American Tail]
Celine Dion & Peabo Bryson – Beauty And The Beast [Beauty And The Beast]

  • avakaran

adam – uninvited – alanis morisette – city of angels

Wow! That would be fabulous. I wonder if he will do something more uptempo to follow Mad World…

    How about Purple Rain?

  • Kirsten

That Footloose song suggested upthread, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hear it for the Boyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ might not be a bad choice if she can switch the arrangement up enough so that it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sound too dated.

Oh, if she sings something from Footloose, why not “Holding out for a Hero” ?(Fantasia sang it for Disco night not movie night. No it is not a Disco era song, but the rules, they are flexible). Great 80′s cheese and she can sing the crap out of it.

Movies like Wayne’s World, High Fidelity and Reservoir Dogs allow for a lot of diversity in this theme. Really, anything goes. BTW, “Springtime for Hitler” (The Producers, 1968) for group song? j/k

  • Grammie Kari

I would love to see Lil get away from pop Divas and do an opposite gender number. No, Celine, Whitney, Tina, Bette, etc. Maybe Huey Lewis’ The Power Of Love [Back To The Future].

It’s time for Allison to do a fun number reflecting her age. Something light and fluffy.

Anoop neeeds a cool, upbeat number.

    Adam can do anything.

  • Tracy

    BTW, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Springtime for Hitlerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (The Producers, 1968) for group song?

OMG! I’m cracking up at the mental image I’m getting.

  • Madcap Jester

Because I am determined that there needs to be at least ONE Disney song next week:

Adam Lambert: “He’s A Tramp” from Lady and the Tramp, because it would be FABULOUS. But really, Adam could probably take any of the Disney ballads – Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Bella Notte, Whole New World (although if he chooses this one, he is very stupid), etc – and turn it into gold. Honestly, as long as he stops singing like a GIRL (a very talented girl, but a girl nonetheless) and avoids those godawful screechy notes, I’ll be happy.

Allison: Should totally rock out to an awesome villain song, like Poor Unfortunate Soul or Cruella DeVil. Or how about “Can’t Wait to be King”?

Matt: Any Phil Collins song from Tarzan will suit him nicely – You’ll Be In My Heart, Strangers Like Me, Two Worlds, etc.

Kris Allen: Phil Collins works for him too, but unlike Matt, he’s got that sunny personality that could pull off a cheerful song, like “You’ve Got A Friend In Me”.

Lil: Power ballads are a go! Colors of the Wind, Reflection, Part of Your World – all of these songs have huge glory notes, but also require a more subtle feel, which Lil hasn’t been displaying at all. The song I’d like to see her do, though, is I Won’t Say I’m In Love from Hercules, because it’s a lot more modern (although I’d rather see Allison sing it, now that I think about it . . . .)

Anoop: Kiss the Girl from Little Mermaid is perfect for him – upbeat, and would probably sound really cool with an R&B interpretation. (Yeah, I don’t really care about Anoop anymore; unless Kris or Matt severely fuck it up, the guy’s totally going home next week.)

Danny: Disney tends to not create musical numbers when a character tragically dies, so he’s out of luck. He Lives In You has enough of a Christian undertone to it, but it’s no Jesus Takes the Motherfucking Wheel. That being said, if anyone’s going to do My Heart Will Go On, it’ll probably be the guy who chose Mariah Carey’s Hero during an unrestricted week.

  • hardkandy

I want Adam to sing My Heart Will Go On… that would be my guilty pleasure for forever. But I’m pretty sure Adam can do well with this theme, this is totally right up his alley, he can use his acting chops on this one.

  • Sasha1

    Some suggestions:

Danny, Everything I do, Bryan Adams, Robin Hood: Prince of thieves; I don’t want to miss a thing, Aerosmith, Armageddon, “Arthur’s Theme” by Christopher Cross from Arthur (1981); Try a little tenderness, The Commitments

Adam, Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen, Waynes world, We are the champions, Queen, The Mighty Ducks; Putting out the fire, Cat People, David Bowie, … For humor only – “I’m just a sweet transvestite”, Frankenfurter, Rocky Horrow; Elton John, ‘Tiny Dancer’ (‘Almost Famous’ 2000); The Knack, ‘My Sharona’ (‘Reality Bites,’ 1994); Iris, Goo Goo Dolls, City of Angels

Matt, All for love, Bryan Adams, Sting, Rod Stewart; “It’s In the Way That You Use It” by Eric Clapton from The Color of Money; Eric Clapton, ‘Layla’ (‘Goodfellas,’ 1990)

Lil, Do you know where you’re going to, Mahogany; Flashdance…What A Feeling (Theme from Flashdance), by Irene Cara; Fame, Irene Cara, Fame; Mary J. Blige, ‘Not Gon’ Cry’ (‘Waiting to Exhale,’ 1995)

Anoop: Unchained Melody, Righteous Brothers, Ghost; Twist and Shout, The Beatles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off;READY TO TAKE A CHANCE AGAIN by BARRY MANILOW, FOUL PLAY; ‘Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head’ (‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,’ 1969)

Allison: Lady Marmalade – Christina Aguilera, Lilà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Kim, Mà ½a, Missy Elliott and Pink (Moulin Rouge!); Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler (Beaches); Audrey Hepburn, ‘Moon River’ (‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s,’ 1961)

Kris: Glory Of Love (Theme from The Karate Kid, Part II), by Peter Cetera; Peter Gabriel, ‘In Your Eyes’ (‘Say Anything’ 1989);Seal, ‘Kiss From a Rose’ (‘Batman Forever,’ 1995)

  • Sasha1

I should add that the song “All for Love” was from the Three Musketeers.

Add to Anoop’s list: Lady in Red, Chris De Burgh, American Psycho

Add to Adam’s list, Light my fire, The Doors, The Doors

  • krazykristy

    My choices for each:

Adam – Super Massive Blackhole (Twilight) – he will kill on this plus get millions of girls voting… or Unchained Melody (Ghost) I want that!!!!!

Allison – I Want You To Want Me or Cruel to be Kind (10 Things I Hate About You) totally her age/style and Simon may give her credit for the innuendo.

Kris – She’s like the Wind (Dirty Dancing) – he could do something with it. Iris (City of Angels), or Two Steps Behind ala Def Leppard (Last Action Hero). Or a song from Once Soundtrack.

    Matt – I’m a Believer(Shrek) or You’ll be in my Heart (Tarzan)

Lil – My Immortal (DareDevil) – major change – she can’t scream it or go all crazy R&B Diva. I Know Where I’ve Been ala Queen Latifah (Hairspray)

Danny – Life is a Highway – Rascal Flatts as he is a fan (Cars). If God will Send His Angels – I think he may attempt Bono and go all Evangelistic on this. I see the Choir already…..(City of Angels)

Anoop – Poor Guy. I Can Fly?? (Space Jam). Really no idea…will it even matter??

  • NOLA

Adam – Anything from “Jesus Christ Superstar”

  • Layla

If Lil does something from Dreamgirls, I will drive to Los Angeles and slap her myself.

    :lol_tb:

  • http://supermeklot.livejournal.com supermeklot

sorry for this being too lengthy.

    1) Matt Giraud – “Your Song” from Moulin Rouge

Matt was easily the first one that I had a song to suggest for when I saw the theme spoiler. His piano skills and soulful voice could easily match with the fabulous lyrics and awesome melody of this song.

    Do: Choose this song. Seriously.
Don’t: Try to be like Elton John. Make it your own (don’t exaggerate the suggestion please). Give it your soulful vibe.

    2) Kris Allen – “Crazy for You” from Vision Quest or “Melt with You” from 50 First Dates

I’m not entirely sure about “Crazy for You” but due to the numerous acts in the Philippines that have covered the song, I have come to realize that the song is good no matter who sings it. It will be an easily likable performance.

As for “Melt with You”, I’m craving entirely for something Jason Mraz from him. This song not leaning towards the more “Mraz-y” Mraz songs is a good thing since there is a less tendency to sound copycat.

Do: Stick to the guitar this week. And I mean the acoustic guitar. I miss that Kris Allen.
Don’t: Do a song that will require too much playing up on the arrangement. Learn your lesson.

    3) Danny Gokey – “Power of Love” from Back to the Future

Aside from the fact that BttF is my most favorite movie in my entire lifetime, I do believe that Gokey can pull this off because it is this kind of stuff that would suit his voice more. In fact, it sounds like he originally sang this song! Haha! I don’t like cabaret-sounding Gokey. It’s even worse than normal Gokey.

Do: Keep your dance moves to yourself.
    Don’t: Overdo the song.

    4) Allison Iraheta – “Iris” from City of Angels

My suggestion might be weird for some but I truly believe in the red-haired kid’s rocker-girl capabilities. This song is not only easy to like but also would help to further exhibit her awesome vocal prowess that we all should be familiar with so far.

Do: Sing your heart out. I don’t see any hindrance to make this performance fail if you choose this song.
Don’t: Wear something weird. The judges will focus on that again.

    5) Anoop Desai – “My Girl” from Father of the Bride

I have been enlightened, as well, that there’s this “something” that the song has to have for Anoop to make it work. I don’t know what this thing exactly is but I know that this song has it.

Do: Make it your own. Play it up a little so that you won’t sound too old-school for American Idol.
Don’t: Look like a stiff pole. Loosen up.

    6) Lil Rounds – “If You’re Not the One” from Maid in Manhattan

Weird suggestion again, I know. But Lil really has to prove herself worthy of actually being here instead of Felicia Barton. To pull off a guy song is only part 1 of the job. Part two which is nailing the high notes is something we know that she can do.

Do: Choose a good modern song. Please.
    Don’t: Sound copycat-ish.

    7) Adam Lambert – “Stay (I Missed You)” from Reality Bites

Since the start of the top 13 episodes, I’ve been craving for something unique from Adam Lambert–something he wouldn’t normally do. The Tracks of my Tears thing was something I sort of expected so it doesn’t count. I want Adam to go acoustic-y. I think he will still sound good and it will show that he can be not too showy when the situation calls for it. If he actually chooses this song or something from this genre, he will just nail his win for sure.

    Do: Surprise me us.
    Don’t: Deafen me us.

  • hypertwink

Yay, Quentin is back. I liked him when he guested in AI before. He even outdicked Simon, in some critiques.

  • idealistic03

oh my God this is the theme idol should consider because it is obviously a broad category…

i have high hopes for matt this week and for poor anoop..yes anoop is not my fave as weeks go by but i do want him to last atleast top five..

i wonder if matt can do mandy moore’s only hope from a walk to remember?i mean he does piano very well and that song is so good in piano and would surely bring really good moments…i can still remember how good mandy make that song so heartfelt and so desperate…please matt choose only hope…

or what about can you read my mind from superman?that is a very good song…

will someone please do sing crush by 3Gs?its from princess diaries i dont know if lots of peepz are aware of this song and dont know who could do this..maybe allison?if she does then i might lyk her..hehe

    anoop-jai ho from slumdog?just kidding..lol

  • idealistic03

    adam lambert-lady marmalade… :lol_tb:

  • Valentin432

    Quentin Tarantino directing Adam Lambert???
Why do we have to wait a week for that…

  • Sasha1

Tarantino, eh? Maybe one or more of the contestants will want to engratiate themselves by doing one from Pulp Fiction?

Matt could do “Lets stay together”.
Allison could do “Son of a Preacher Man”.

Not related but I thought maybe Adam could consider “Good Times” from The Lost Boys?

  • Layla

Holy shit! Tarantino…I am totally geeking out here. I flove his ADHD mannerisms- I am always impressed by his vast knowledge of past and present pop culture.

Adam and Tarantino- well I’m sure Quentin won’t treat him like he’s a freak from another planet like Randy Travis did.

Love the idea of this theme but damn…it’s pretty wide open.

I really hope Adam stays away from “Purple Rain”…too obvious.

Does the theme really mean any song frm any movie?

Hmmm.. gonna have to give this some thought.

  • msmoore27

idealistic03 – hahaha…I’m not such a huge Adam fan though I respect his talent but that would be great. Think O’Reilly would cover that for sure!! Stupid O’Reilly…

  • smilepretty

I think lil has been picking these big ballads to prove she has this big voice, which obviously she does, but never the right ones. I’ve been waiting for her to find a song she can connect to and put on a great performance. I think it if she does “listen” by Beyonce, from dreamgirls that could be it. It’s R&B like they want her to be singing and I think if she puts enough passion into it and makes it her own, she could nail it.

I would love for Matt to sing “you’ve lost that loving feeling” by the Righteous brothers from topgun. I think he could rearrange it and go back to the piano.

I want Allison to sing “Can’t fight the Moonlight” by Leann Rimes, from coyote ugly. It’s fun and upbeat and she could bring out her personality.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Oh yay! I loved Quentin Taratino as a “guest judge” on season 3. I thought he was hilarious. Even if he’s not a musician, he at least loves the show. Should be a lot of fun!! :)

Too bad Adam already did “Mad World.” :) Now I guess the question is, what can he pull out of his hat next? Hee.

  • msmoore27

If Adam did “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” (it was in Mrs. Doubtfire), I would become a fan of his right there on the spot. I mean, he’s got the Steven Tyler voice, right?

  • flicker

Yay!!! Tarantino! He was the best guest judge ever! I was shocked at how invested he was in it!

This should be tons of fun. I bet he’ll be an awesome mentor.

  • http://myspace.com/arcadata arca

I wish Adam would do “Wicked Game,” but he’s already done a slow song this week, so I expect he’ll choose a fast one for next week (since he’s been alternating those this season.)

  • KrazeeK120

I’d love to hear Adam do something from “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I know technically that is a musical, but it was made into a movie! The first time I heard Adam, I thought he would make a great Judas…his look and voice suit that character well.

Note: In no way am I saying that Adam is evil…I think quite the contrary of him. I just think he could play the character well.

As for the rest, I don’t really know…I just hope that my 3 faves, Kris/Allison/Adam, do well and that Lil or Danny bite the dust this week.

  • TopCatDC

Songs they should NOT do under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES:

Lil – I Will Always Love You
Anoop – It’s Hard to be a Pimp (Oscar winning song from Crash)
Allison – You Light Up My Life
Adam – Take My Breath Away
    Kris – Chim Chim Cheeree
Danny – When She Loved Me (the heartbreaking song from Toy Story 2 that Mr. Potatoe Head sings when he loses Mrs. Potatoe Head)

  • yeahyeahsure

Woohoo! I was right! I so predicted this when I heard that Miley is performing (and it will likely be aired with Jennifer’s performance). Yay me!

  • savgal

Can’t wait for this theme! Yeah, it can be really broad.
Kudos to the one who mentioned “A Walk to Remember”. Would actually love to hear Kris do Switchfoot, was even thinking of “Dare You to Move”, although Cook did that last year. I had been hoping he would do “Power of Love” this week from “Back to the Future”, so that is still open, too. Just thought of “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” from “Top Gun”…. the background singers out on stage with him could make that work.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Yes! Quentin Tarantino! He was the best guest judge…ever.

  • idolnut

I don’t know if this is allowed but I would love:

    Adam – Bohemian Rapsody
Matt – Georgia on my Mind (Ray)
even tho they both did these songs during the Hollywood auditions. Anybody know if AI allows this?

Anoop – You Can’t Always Get What You Want (The Big Chill)
Lil – Say A Little Prayer (My Best Friends Wedding)
Kris – Moon River (Breakfast at Tiffanys)
Danny – Up Where We Belong (Officer and a Gentleman)
Allison – Any Janis Joplin song that has been in a movie.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Something tells me Scott would have sung “A Whole New World.” :sick_ee: Whew!

I’m thinking “When a Man Loves a Woman” for Danny. I read somewhere that he wanted to sing that on the show.

  • calimari

I think it would be hysterical if Anoop did Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire. I don’t think Ricky and the band could handle it though…

  • Duke

This is Adam’s chance to sing either Queen or Aerosmith:

    My hopes:

    1) Dream On - Aerosmith – “The song made an appearance as the closing theme to the Disney movie Miracle, as well as the trailer for Miracle. Dream On was also used in the closing credits of the movie Last Action Hero.”

    2) Bohemian Rapsody – thats got to be in at least ONE movie, right??? right???

    3) I heard someone else say Dude Looks Like a Lady- and that would be unreal.

    4) Pink – Aerosmith – Again, i would imagine that had to be in ONE movie. Could you imagine Adam coming out decked out in all pink? Woah. Idol history.

***I think there is a strong chance he might do Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing from Armageddon. It would be a good choice for him too, tho the song has been done. If not, I’m sure Clive will make him sing it in the Finale.

  • Kylene

My current vote for Matt – because it just came on my ipod – is Down to Earth from Wall-E, by Peter Gabriel. It’s a great piano song, and I just sorta love it. :)

(Of course, it’s not exactly a show-stopper, which is maybe what he needs…so, Matty, don’t do it just to please me. Even though I’d love it. You need votes.)

For purley selfish reasons, I wouldn’t mind Music of My Heart done by any of the guys…except for Gokey. I’d vote for that guy all night if they did an *NSYNC song. Except for Gokey.

Obviously I suck at song suggestions and choose them solely based on my own leanings with 100% disregard for whether or not they’re appropriate to make an impact on Idol.

  • sunchick

Tarantino? That’s kickass. Reservoir Dogs=love. Wonder if anyone will kiss up to QT and do the Urge Overkill version of “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon…”

Actually, when I read “songs from the movies,” my first thought? Four words (ha ha, I’m so Kara)…

    Velvet Goldmine, Adam Lambert.

    Oh, I have a dream….

    Baby’s On Fire
20th Century Boy (movie version)Live performance featuring Placebo AND The Bowie
    Ballad of Maxwell Demon

QT would so eat that shit up, too. AI audiences? Not so much. Do it, Adam. You know you want to.

Note: In no way am I saying that Adam is evilà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦I think quite the contrary of him. I just think he could play the character well.

In the play, Judas wasn’t evil. History just painted him that way. Tortured and confused and misguided, but not evil.

Anoop – Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hard to be a Pimp (Oscar winning song from Crash)

LMAO, I would totally throw Noopy some votes if he did that.

  • NOLA

What movies have Queen done the soundtracks for?
Flash Gordon and Highlander are the only movies in which Queen has had a part in the soundtrack. However, many individual Queen songs have appeared in movies (ie, One Vision in Iron Eagle, We Are The Champions in Revenge of The Nerds, etc. etc.). A file in archives called ART_rc.video lists many of the movies containing Queen songs.

***I think there is a strong chance he might do Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Wanna Miss a Thing from Armageddon. It would be a good choice for him too, tho the song has been done. If not, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure Clive will make him sing it in the Finale.

Highly doubt that, as it was the producers choice for David Cook last season.

  • NOLA

    2) Bohemian Rapsody – thats got to be in at least ONE movie, right??? right???

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was re-released as a single in 1992 after appearing in Wayne’s World.

  • bean99

I wonder how wide a range of songs they have to choose from? I just know this will be a week that I’m gong to have to turn down the volume when Adam sings. There’s just too many songs from movies that he’ll want to throw the glory notes in again and again. I guess it’s too much to hope for an understated performance again this week.

I don’t know what Anoop will pick but he knows he’s on the plank just waiting for someone to push him off so he should go for it and perform his heart out.

  • NOLA

Matt should do a slow piano ballad like “Only Hope” (from A Walk to Remember) or “You’ll Be in My Heart” (from Tarzan). I hope the Disney freak in him doesn’t make him choose something really, really dumb. Actually, now that I think about it, his song choices—on paper–have usually scared me. Hopefully, he’ll keep his confidence and not screw up!

Anoop should stick to what he’s good at. That is, he should sing a ballad.

I hope Lil finally buys her ticket home.

ETA: “Georgia on My Mind” was in the Ray! movie soundtrack! An obvious choice for Matt, but it could be his “A Song For You” and buy him another week on the show.

  • stardust462

Wow, a lot of awesome suggestions posted so far. Here are the ones I really would like to see:

    Kris – Footloose
Lil – Say a Little Prayer
Allison – Nobody Does It Better, or any James Bond Theme
Matt – Don’t You (Forget About Me) or Hungry Eyes
    Anoop – Your Song
Danny – Wind Beneath My Wings
    Adam – Moon River

I really want to see someone do That Thing You Do. Maybe the group song?

AI should definitely do a James Bond Theme night and a Disney Theme night in the future.

  • Kylene

Prime, I won’t mind if Matty gets the boot after singing a dumb Disney song choice. The fact that he gave me a personal shoutout by choosing a dumb Disney song (because, clearly, that’s what he’d be doing) would be enough to keep me happy. :) If it’s Disney, it’ll be my favorite.

Especially if it was, like, Under the Sea. Since I distinctly remember a certain someone in chat who shall remain nameless promising me and Matty a night full of votes if he did a Little Mermaid tune.

EDIT: Holy crap, can I put in a write-in vote for someone to sing something from Newsies? Cause if someone did, I would 100% change all my votes to that person. EVEN Gokey. The World Will Know? King of New York? Seize the Day? Lovey Dovey Baby? SOMETHING?

    ( – Kylene…aka kmh303)

  • Skylark

HYPERTWINK, I am 100% behind your suggestion of
    “So Close”for Kris!!

  • bridgeymah

As long as NO ONE sings “my heart will go on” I am fine with pretty much anything!

  • bridgeymah

(And that isn’t because I love the song)

  • Victoria

FUN! Sounds like a great theme for this group. I didn’t watch the season Quentin Tarantino mentored but he sounds like a good mentor from the comments. I’m too lazy to think up songs for the Idols right now, but I like the suggestions I’m seeing… this should a good week!

  • Jlyn

When someone mention Peter Gabriel upthread I immediately thought of In Your Eyes. First I wondered which boy would do it justice (I think Matt or Kris would be good), but then decided it is what Lil needs to do. It’s a great, very recognizable song that I think she could do really well without verging into copycat territory.

  • t2

Tarantino as a judge was pretty darn hilarious, but he’s such a fan that he walks in with a lot of built in biases on the contestants. I can’t remember who it was (DeGarmo?) that his comment was “That was soooo great unlike most of the time when you are dull and feel no emotional connection.” So even though his comment was good, he took the time to remind America why he didn’t like the contestant in the first place.

NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR A MENTOR when your biases are that strong. His favorites (and no, I don’t know who they are) are golden and his non-favorites are toast.

Anoop is toast either way because he is the Castro of the year — although he will not go as far in the competition as Castro.

  • ericalina

Anoop – Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hard to be a Pimp (Oscar winning song from Crash)

LMAO, I would totally throw Noopy some votes if he did that.

It’s actually called It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp, and it’s from HUSTLE AND FLOW (but both had Terrence Howard in them).

  • piperlily

Oooo cool theme! I also wonder if their choices are narrowed.

All I can do is think of some songs off of soundtracks I love…

How Soon Is Now (The Craft)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrZlPppOrVk

    Supermassive Black Hole (Twilight)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwJm-i3_O5s

Of course I’m thinking of Adam…. I’ll come back and add more if I think of anything else…

  • Tess

You guys absolutely amaze me…either you spend all your time watching movies or you are just the greatest trivia players in the world.

I know it would never get cleared…but if Adam could sing something from Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’, preferably ‘Comfortably Numb’ I will die happy.

Now it’s off to you tube and the songs in movie lists to see what really obscure song and cover I can find to recommend to Adam. The guy must be more of a song nerd then even David Archuleta to come up with the choices he’s made.

  • t2

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s actually called Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hard Out Here for a Pimp, and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s from HUSTLE AND FLOW (but both had Terrence Howard in them).

Also from the great classic flick “Office Space”…heh…

  • Skylark

Maybe “Brown Eyed Girl” for Matt? It was in at least two movies that I know of, and who doesn’t like that song?

  • primeminister

Maybe à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Brown Eyed Girlà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for Matt? It was in at least two movies that I know of, and who doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like that song?

I don’t think Van Morrison clears his songs for Idol anymore. He did once with an audition in the early seasons, but not anymore.

  • lovecert

Here I was thinking of “Happy Working Song” for Megan with the bird chirping.

Lil’s so doing “Listen” from Dreamgirls.

ETA: Mary J Blige did a cover of “Natural Woman” for the New York Undercover soundtrack. QT, please talk her out of it.

  • stardust462

Holy crap, can I put in a write-in vote for someone to sing something from Newsies? Cause if someone did, I would 100% change all my votes to that person. EVEN Gokey. The World Will Know? King of New York? Seize the Day? Lovey Dovey Baby? SOMETHING?

ITA. Love Newsies. I could totally see Gokey sing Seize the Day. The World Will Know would be a good group song.

  • pj

I didn’t watch in Season 3, but this seems like a wide open theme. So, I looked up what they sang that week and wasn’t impressed:

George Huff – “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” from Against All Odds, by Phil Collins
Jennifer Hudson – “I Have Nothing” from The Bodyguard, by Whitney Houston
Jon Peter Lewis – “Jailhouse Rock” from Jailhouse Rock, by Elvis Presley
Diana DeGarmo – “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, by Celine Dion
Fantasia Barrino – “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess
Jasmine Trias – “When I Fall in Love” from Sleepless in Seattle, by Celine Dion and Clive Griffin
John Stevens – “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca
LaToya London – “Somewhere” from West Side Story

Let’s hope we get some better selections from this group.

  • Valentin432

This theme is just wide open, almost any song with some success has been on a movie soundtrack, the problem is that the actual list given to the idols is probably much shorter than we think.

NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR A MENTOR when your biases are that strong. His favorites (and no, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know who they are) are golden and his non-favorites are toast.

I don’t know, he seemed to genuinely care about the contestants and he must be following this year very closely if he is a mentor.

I think that he is the first mentor that doesn’t work directly in the music industry, I wonder if he will focus more his advices on how to perform the songs that the contestants will chose.

I actually have a very good idea who could be his favorite contestants based on his films and taste of music.

  • rp9882

I have some song choices for my 2 favorite contestants:

    Adam – Uninvited, Alanis Morrisette
    The Crying game, Boy George
    Bring me to life, Evanescence

Allison – We don’t need another hero, Tina Turner
    Hero, Nickelback

  • piperlily

Oh yeah, Allison could do some Bonnie Tyler, off the Footloose soundtrack or something.

Adam’s going to love this theme. I still think Muse would be awesome for him.

  • holeighannie

    1. I haven’t read all the comments yet but I like where you guys are going with the suggestions.

    2. This should be limited to the more iconic songs…I know such a thing can’t be labeled/policed, but there are certain songs everyone associates with a certain movie. (“Take My Breath Away”, for example.)

    3. Whoever suggested Adam singing “Uninvited” is a GENIUS. Now I will have trouble accepting any other choice he may make, haha. jtgraffix, yes, awesome idea.

    4. Kris singing “In Your Eyes” = OMGGGG. Seriously, that would be fabulous.

    5. I’m really going to have high expectations for this week. Movies, and especially the music used in them, are definitely some of my favorite things! ;)

  • weareallinnocent

As good as the choice may be, Adam SHOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER something from Jesus Christ Superstar unless he wants to go home. Did we learn nothing from Carly’s fantastic performance last year? You know, the one that sent her home?

I know it’s not true of everyone, but more than a few folks in this country have no appreciation for that play/movie. It’s wholly misunderstood and Judas’ Jesus Christ Superstar is fairly often considered total blasphemy.

As good as Adam is, like everyone else, he still very much needs the casual voters. So just say “NO” to Jesus Christ Superstar! (Actually, that goes for everyone…)

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I love Quentin Tarantino. To Diana DeGarmo, after her performance of the heard-to-death “My Heart Will Go On” – “You pulled off the song, but so what? There couldn’t be a song that we’re more sick of hearing…. You pulled off the notes and stuff, but I don’t care. I thought there was glass between me and you.” Hehe.

Who will he say that to next week? Can’t wait.

    4. Kris singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“In Your Eyesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ = OMGGGG. Seriously, that would be fabulous.

    Perfect, I think.

I wonder which direction Allison will take this week?

  • Jayd

    I know it would never get clearedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦but if Adam could sing something from Pink Floydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹The Wallà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, preferably à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Comfortably Numbà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ I will die happy

Unfortunately, you’re probably right about the c learance on that song, but it would be so good. He usually likes to mix it up a little so….

    Supermassive Black Hole (Twilight)

This is another one that I think would be hard to get clearance for because it’s still right up there (soundtrack) on the charts. But Adam has the pipes to nail it. To most people it’s an immediately recognized movie song which is what I think a lot of people will be looking for. In some ways that’s a good thing, but not always.

Just to be completely selfish, I wish someone would sing, “Baby Now I” from The Cutting Edge (The original).

  • holeighannie

Ooh, you know what else would be awesome for Kris? Gin Blossoms’ “Til I Hear It From You”, from Empire Records. Actually, my mom and I were in the car the other day and it came up on my iPod and she asked if it was Kris! Haha. Now I’m torn…

I need to think about Allison, let me go through my iTunes.

    Gin Blossoms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CU0LO1gFRA

  • janerazor

I feel it in my bones that someone is going to do “Against All Odds” and will suck hard. If TPTB want Anoop gone next week, they will saddle him with this one. Or maybe “Jaan Pehechan Ho” from Ghost World, though I would kind of adore that. I think he’d kill with “As Time Goes By,” but I’m thinking he needs to go upbeat this week. Maybe “In Your Eyes”?

I could hear Danny doing “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman.”

One song I haven’t seen mentioned is “She” from Notting Hill. Maybe Matt could take that one on.

Kris could sing “Northern Sky” from Serendipity.

Would love for someone to pull out “My One and Only Love” from Leaving Las Vegas. I’ll toss it to Adam, as I think he could do just justice to pretty much any genre.

I could hear Allison doing “A Kiss from a Rose,” oddly enough.

As for Lil…truly couldn’t care less…but I have a feeling it will be completely predictable…bring on the Whitney!

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Krazeek YES for Adam and with Tarantino directing him, I bet it will all kinds of amazing!! Oh and I am super duper happy happy that Kris is stilllll thereeeee!!!!! YAY

  • Layla

Gwen…love that quote from Quentin :lol_tb:…I can just hear him saying that. Think Ill tube it. If I remember correctly he loved Fantasia but wanted her to bring back the funk the following week. Wonder what he thinks about DC?

I know ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not true of everyone, but more than a few folks in this country have no appreciation for that play/movie. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wholly misunderstood and Judasà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Jesus Christ Superstar is fairly often considered total blasphemy.

That was the only time I felt sorry for Carly when I read so many negative things about her choosing a song from JCS- which is a fantastic musical..I still listen to the music, but from the version with Murray Head…brilliant.

But you are right. Adam should stay away JCS, as well as the: The Doors, Purple Rain, Rent, Boy George, Velvet Goldmine, Whitney (hee) , Celine, The Beatles and the song “Summertime”.

Ye gods this is so hard…there are so many great movie songs out there. I agree that “Comfortably Numb and Supermassive Black Hole would be good choices.

    Have to think about this….

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

“Anoop is toast either way because he is the Castro of the year à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ although he will not go as far in the competition as Castro.”

Castro – yes, thats what he looked like last week – in that one instant – I have been trying to put a face on it, oh wait you mean JASON Castro

I have absolutely no ideas on movie songs for any of them, the last movie I saw was with my kids and it was High School Musical III, so hmmmm – something from that? No way – before that it was something with Demi Moore getting sold for a million dollars many moons ago – but I am so looking forward to this

  • weareallinnocent

Yikes on Quentin’s judging comments for DeGarmo! He made Simon look sweet, warm and fuzzy. *Shiver*

  • soccerboi

ooooo….Uninvited IS genius! This would be amazing! We need to get to Adam and suggest this to him….seriously!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Gwenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦love that quote from Quentin à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦I can just hear him saying that. Think Ill tube it. If I remember correctly he loved Fantasia but wanted her to bring back the funk the following week.

Yeah, and that was after she sang “Summertime.” Talk about keepin’ it real.

But you are right. Adam should stay away JCS, as well as the: The Doors, Purple Rain, Rent, Boy George, Velvet Goldmine, Whitney (hee) , Celine, The Beatles and the song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Summertimeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Oooooh…I actually like the thought of “Purple Rain.” Prince is selective about his music on Idol, though. Hmmmmm….

If Lil sings “I Will Always Love You” from The Bodyguard…pack the bags, leave them on the edge of the stage. That’s it.

  • pj

I wonder if they’ll have to chose from a list like AFI’s 100 top movie songs.

  • motherofautumn

EDIT: Holy crap, can I put in a write-in vote for someone to sing something from Newsies? Cause if someone did, I would 100% change all my votes to that person. EVEN Gokey. The World Will Know? King of New York? Seize the Day? Lovey Dovey Baby? SOMETHING?

I was totally thinking the SAME THING!!

  • annabelina

If Adam did à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dude (Looks Like a Lady)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (it was in Mrs. Doubtfire), I would become a fan of his right there on the spot.

Lol! I wish, but that’s way too obvious for him.

Whoever said “Decode” for Allison … omg! I know they told her to “lighten up”, but I’ve wanted her to do Paramore since forever (i.e. the beginning of the competition), but maybe she would be too “sound alike”?

I don’t want anyone to do anything from a musical movie, especially Rent. I still haven’t forgiven them for messing up “Seasons of Love” at IGB last year. Also, no Titantic and no Bodyguard please.

  • Layla

Yea..maybe you are right about Purple rain Gwen, but don ¨’t you think that is too obvious of a choice for him? I love the song but…

    Some maybe choices for Adam:

“What a Wondderful World” (Good Morning Vietnam)
“Layla “(hee) the acoustic version (Good Fellas)
“Old Time Rock and Roll (Risky Business)
    “Tiny Dancer” (Almost Famous)
“Try a Little Tenderness” I think Adam Could Kill With This!
The Gospel Song that Queen Latifah sings the hell out of in HairSpray

    Tarantino might appreciate someone singing:
“Stuck in the Middle With You” (Resevoir Dogs) The Dylan Version

No One, not even Lil, should sing ANY of the following..No!NO!NO!

    I will always Love you
    Anything from Dream Girls
    anything from Grease
    Anything from Saturday Night Fever
    Eye Of the Tiger
    Love Lift Us Up
Don ¨’t wanna miss a Thing
    Wind Benath My Wings
    Unchained Melody
    I believe I can Fly
Everything I doTime of My Life
    Take My Breath Away

This is fun..now I gotta think of some songs for Allison.

  • Layla

    Gwen,

did you just put up tat link to the De Garmo/Tarantino clip or did I miss it before? In any case-thanks:)

  • holeighannie

Allison: Cat Power à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sea of Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , from Juno. It would be so different from what sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s done and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s happy! Haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbMeAOTPJzM

    Kris: Gin Blossoms à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Til I Hear it From Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or Peter Gabriel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“In Your Eyesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Adam: Alanis Morrisette, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Uninvitedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Purple Rainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would rock my face off too.

Matt: Tony Bennett à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Way You Look Tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“, from like 12 movies, but I always think of My Best Friendà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Wedding. Solomon Burke à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Cry to Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , from Dirty Dancing. THAT would be hot, haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEu8DrO9PbY

Lil: Blah, I know sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gonna go straight to The Bodyguard place. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hard to pick for herà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Al Green & Joss Stone do a duet of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How Can You Mend a Broken Heartà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the Sex and the City Movie OST, she could cut out the Al part, haha. Or, if she really has these mad singing skills we keep hearing about, Billie Holiday à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll Be Seeing Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , it was in The Notebook.

  • janerazor

    I wonder if theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll have to chose from a list like AFIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 100 top movie songs.

I hope not, PJ, as that list is pretty limited to older songs. However, there could be a few creative possibilities. How cool would Allison sound with “The Man That Got Away” or even “Ol Man River”?

I effing love the song “I’m Easy” and think any of the guys would do well with it, but I’m not sure how that song would translate on the AI stage. And, hee, “Springtime for Hitler” is on that list! Could we do that as a group number? Or anything from the South Park movie? (Not on the list, but I believe two of the songs were nominated for Oscars.) Also non-list, someone could give QT a nod as mentor and do “You Never Can Tell,” the song that Travolta and Thurman dance to in that diner in Pulp Fiction.

  • savgal

“The Man That Got Away”?????? If Allison could pull that off, would have to split my Kris votes with her. She has the kind of voice that would sound great doing Judy Garland!!! Great suggestion, janerazor.
Made me think of “As Time Goes By”– “Blues in the Night” — all those great old songs from the movies.
ps – pj, thanks for the AFI link. As a movie buff, I LOVE reading the list and hearing those tunes in my head.

  • msmoore27

    Adam –
“Call Me” (was the theme from American Gigolo) would be genius! I’m not the biggest Adam fan but I would consider being one if he did Blondie!
“Don’t You Forget About Me” another good choice.

    Allison –
“Lady Marmalade” could be risky, but could pay off due to the popularity factor.
“Son of a Preacher Man” would suit her voice and also fit well with her age
“Must Have Been Love” would be great, it’s such a great song, but people might be too creeped out by a 16 year old singing lines like ‘touch me now’

    Anoop –
“Kiss From a Rose”. It’s a popular one.

    Danny -
“Old Time Rock and Roll” would be fun from him
“Iris” would be a very safe, popular choice

    Kris –
Would love to see him break out the acoustic guitar and do something from ONCE, either “Leave” or “Say It To Me Now”
“Your Song” would cause the mass swooning of teenage girls all of the country…

    Lil –
“Take a Look at Me Now”? Honestly, I she will probably completely ignore the judges’ advice and pick a Whitney or something.

    Matt –
“Roxanne”, slowed down and made more bluesy. He couldn’t try to imitate Sting’s falsetto, though, that would be suicide.
    “Tiny Dancer”?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I love Quentin Tarantino. To Diana DeGarmo, after her performance of the heard-to-death à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Heart Will Go Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You pulled off the song, but so what? There couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be a song that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re more sick of hearingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦. You pulled off the notes and stuff, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care. I thought there was glass between me and you.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Hehe.

I thought she was sooo going home that week. But noooo :dry_tb: :thumbdown_tb:

Here is Adam singing “Heaven in their minds” from JSC

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0r7FOW68wE

I like “Dont you forget about me” for him too.

  • star

I love “Supermassive Black Hole” and the fact that it was used in the best scene of the Twilight movie, but eh. It’s a pretty stylized song…I don’t think it would work as an AI performance. I think “Tiny Dancer” is a good choice for Adam, and I know a few people said “In Your Eyes” for Kris, but I think that’d be a good one for Adam too. I’ll have to think on this one a little more.

Lil – “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” from Footloose
Allison – “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson (from The Princess Diaries)

  • sunchick

I had totally forgotten about the QT vs. DeGarmo stuff. If ever I wanted to reach into the TV and high five a judge on American Idol, that would have been the time right there. Classic, and he so nailed her on everything. She annoyed the bejesus outta me, and yes, that’s when I stopped watching.

Adam should stay away JCS, as well as the: The Doors, Purple Rain, Rent, Boy George, Velvet Goldmine,

Hush your mouth. You’re killing the dream. :smirk1_ee: I want one, just one crazy ass jaw dropper from Glambert, and then he can be a good boy the rest of the season and do what he needs to do to win. If ever there was a golden ticket to take a brief trip to Freakytown and Bowieville, it’s the week Tarantino is mentoring, is all I’m saying. Cuz you know QT would have his back.

I absolutely hate My Heart Will Go On, but I love Come What May from Moulin Rouge. Now tell me, does that make sense? Heck, if everyone did songs from Moulin Rouge it would be a good night…Roxanne, Your Song, Come What May, Lady Marmalade, Nature Boy….

Since they have the rights to the McCartney/Lennon songbook, anything from Across the Universe is most likely on the table.

  • sma11ie

    Allison – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakawayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Kelly Clarkson (from The Princess Diaries)

Personally, I think that’s a little cheesy and I’d rather hear something cooler from Allison, but this might be a great strategic choice. Allison needs to “lighten up” with something young and happy, and even though it’s losing a little cred doing a Princess Diaries song, it’s not really because it’s a Kelly Clarkson song. Which means it’ll suit her voice.

Heck, if everyone did songs from Moulin Rouge it would be a good nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Roxanne, Your Song, Come What May, Lady Marmalade, Nature Boyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

WORD! I will vote for anyone who does any Moulin Rouge song!

RE: QT, I understand he was a guest judge before, but I don’t see musical qualifications he could have to offer the contestants as a mentor? I can see a director who’s helped put together great soundtracks could help with song choice, but that’s not what mentors do. How will QT be able to give them tips on how to sing their chosen songs? Weird.

  • hollygo9

    Allison – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakawayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Kelly Clarkson (from The Princess Diaries)

I’d rather hear Kris do Breakaway in an earnest acoustic performance. Kris needs a big win this week. Showcase the voice and that cute face.

Adam needs to do something uptempo that sounds contemporary. He’s crushing the ballads but ‘wtf’ing the upbeat numbers.

  • Layla

    To you Sunchick

Hush your mouth. Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re killing the dream. Cuz you know QT would have his back.

I’m feelin’Â ¨you Sunchick…I honestly am but people’s heads would spin, children’s eyes and ears would be covered, and there would be a giant hush over the land … and then villagers would grab the pitchforks and storm the stage en masse!

I love Velevet Golmine too but Dayum girl…we want him to at least reach the final 3 :shock_tb: :lol_tb:d

I absolutely hate My Heart Will Go On, but I love Come What May from Moulin Rouge. Now tell me, does that make sense? Heck, if everyone did songs from Moulin Rouge it would be a good nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Roxanne, Your Song, Come What May, Lady Marmalade, Nature Boyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I have to admit that one of my musical guilty pleasures (besides Flashdance :redface_wp:) is Celine’s My Heart Will go on. Heard a street violinist play it when we were in Berlin in the Autumn and I burst into tears…that song always brings the tears..and I don’Â ¨t want anyone singing it except Celine.

I love every single song from Moulin Rouge…Ewan McGregor is wonderful.

  • weareallinnocent

While brilliant lyrically, I think Uninvited would be a disaster for Adam. Too much like this week, and oddly, too messagy (new word.)

I vote something a little upbeat for Adam this week. And I worry a little about his choice too since, for whatever reason, peeps seem to pale during their wheelhouse week. Take Cook during rock week, by way of example.

  • melmay32

Someone already mentioned this one but I’d like to reiterate just how amazing it would be:

Matt – Cry to Me by Solomon Burke from Dirty Dancing

So good. Or one of my own thoughts, Matt singing When You Say Nothing At All, the Ronan Keating version from Notting Hill.

  • phaynes1

I’d like to see either Kris or Matt do “Undercover” by Pete Yorn from Spiderman….thatd be cool

I think he’s just as qualified as Simon. Most of the mentors are there to promote their own stuff and really do jack shit for the contestants.

  • TwigLA

Someone will HAVE to sing Unchained Melody from Ghost (Righteous Bros). It will either make them or break them.

There are so many great songs that have been used in movies over the years and a banquet to choose from. They really need to try to stay away from anything overdone or cliche, though. I’m betting on a night of ballads.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Sunchick I am totally with you on the Velvet Goldmine thang. I would LOVE for Adam to do Virgina Plain. As for Moulin another good one for him would be Children of the Revolution.

  • colette

Can we possibly beg for a Whitney Houston-free, Disney-free,Diane Warren-free zone???

The amount of shlock in just those three songbags is enough to max out a very large landfill.

Kris should so something with a great melody, some soul, some swing. Nothing mooshy.

    Matt, the same advice.

Anoop, a ballad but with a little strut in it so you don’t become Mr. Woosy.

Adam. I don’t know, knock yourself out. your fans are going to love it whatever you do, and the people who haven’t warmed to you (ie, me) will say nice job and vote for someone else.

Lil, at this point I can’t imagine what will save you, other than an invervention by Spider Man. Why not go out in diva flames, with Shirley Bassey or something equally histrionic?

Danny, keep it sly and smooth. Like you much more in uptempo, breeze mood than in ultra-sincere Michael Bolton mode. “Power of Love” would be great, jaunty and fun.

Allison, yeah you could do great with “The Rose,” but are you sure you wanna invoke the wholes ad Janis Joplin story? There’s lots of other stuff for you, baby….

JAI HO from “Slumdog Millionaire” just HAS to be the group song! And they need to bring in the “So You Think You Can Dance” dancers to dance in the background in bright colorful Bollywood clothing.

By the way, has anyone seen more shameless pimping than what they did for Adam last night? Yeah, it was rushed after his number on Tuesday night’s show, so all Simon had time to do was give him a standing ovation (on behalf of all the judges).

But was that enough? Nooooooooooo. Wednesday we needed a full-court slobber. How much do you adore Adam — Kara? Paula? Randy? Let us count the ways! Take as long as you like — no worries. not the usual two minutes allotted, just praise all you like! And Adam, what do you think about how much they worship you? Any thoughts on that?

They didn’t even pull this crap for David Cook or Fantasia……

^^^Colette, many stations cut away from Idol due to their local programming….and a rush of people called Fox and complained. If it had been your favorite who was cut off in mid song or before his/her judges comments and the reiteration of their voting number you’d be damned pissed. The reason they had Ryan do his little thing with Adam was to give him the credit that was his due, not to pimp him. Besides, the voters had already voted and it wasn’t going to change any results!

  • mandalay

Since Allison is supposed to lighten up and act her age, Sixteen Going on Seventeen from Sound of Music. Just kidding – I would hate that. Simon would probably love it.

    these are my suggestions:

Kris: Dare You To Move (Switchfoot – from A Walk To Remember)
    Adam: Unchained Melody
    Danny: Go The Distance
Anoop: Your Song (Ewan McGregor – from Moulin Rouge)
Lil: Listen (Beyonce – from Dreamgirls)

Allison: Life Is A Highway (Rascal Flatts – from Cars)

Well, AI at its core is a tv talent show. While singing well is important, coming across well on the screen is pretty vital too. And, Quenton sure knows how to make visually compelling film and to direct people on how to come across in their most interesting light. So, he may not have a lot to say about pitch, but these kids could surely use some advice on how to make their performances a tad bit more visually interesting.

    And also, because this:

To Diana DeGarmo, after her performance of the heard-to-death à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Heart Will Go Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You pulled off the song, but so what? Man, I hate Twilight (but like Muse), but if Adam did SuperMassive Black Hole – awesome. It would certainly prove that he can be a current recording artist.

Though, at this point, I have given up on predicting what Adam will sing – much as I did with Cook last year. Adam is a constant surprise.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Falling Slowlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Once.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Someone mentioned Matt’s love for Disney… what about Jon McLaughlin’s Oscar nominated song from Enchanted– wait, that wasn’t Disney =P. Oh, and if Anoop does “It’s Hard out There For a Pimp” (I think that’s the name) from Hustle & Flow per someone’s recommendation up top, I’d LMAO and throw him a few votes. That song rocks!

Yeah, I recorded and fast-forwarded right through it. I don’t know. The judges seem really dramatic and over-the-top this season. They’re over-compensating for something. Nigel’s absence, perhaps?

QT, I understand he was a guest judge before, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see musical qualifications he could have to offer the contestants as a mentor? Interesting thought. But, I kinda think the fact that he’s in the entertainment industry with no music background gives him a fresh, impartial perspective that isn’t colored by your past career (Paula), the career you wanted but didn’t have (Kara), your limited musical knowledge (Simon), or thinking that those you’ve brushed shoulders with somehow qualifies you (Randy).

  • weareallinnocent

Yeah, I get the backlash point of view. But seriously, they didn’t talk any longer than they did with the others Tuesday night. Tess makes good points above, I agree.

Plus, if you go back, you see they gave comments in the very slot that Ryan would normally read back the judges’ comments anyway (complete with that ridiculous, ahem, suspense-building game show music) to the contestants as they await their fate. (You’ll noticed they immediately followed with Ryan reading what the judges said about Kris and then Anoop.)

So, having no comments to read in that slot, what should Ryan do for Adam instead? Say, “This is normally where I’d read back comments, but given the circumstances let’s instead have a moment of silence in awe of Adam and the standing O he received from the judges?” :-)

I’d have been ok with that, but I doubt many others would. LOL

ETA: Not to mention, this way, they got to debunk (uh I mean clarify for) the naysayers who insisted the standing O was not genuine but only a reflection that they ran out of time….

I know this won’t be the case, but if they limited it to songs actually used in Quentin Tarantino movies, it would be a lot more interesting. And yes there would be more than enough good songs to go around. Can you picture Adam doing “Girl You’ll Be a Woman Soon” or Kris doing “Stuck In the Middle With You”? The Jackie Brown soundtrack alone has enough for everybody. Matt could do “Strawberry Letter 23″ and Anoop could do “Natural High” And I would love to be the one to tell Gokey, “here bud, the only song left is Hooked On a Feeling by Blue Suede”

Great choice for Kris, Tess, if he can re-arrange and make it his own! Though I do like it when he swings, and I’d kinda love to hear him rock out on something out of left field like this old bing crosby tune from a movie (sung, unbelievably, by Aretha Franklin):

Tess: I do stand by my impression that they were giving extra hype to Adam. Yes, he deserved some feedback due to their time screwup. but it just seemed over the top to me. probably my grumpy cumulative reaction to how scantly they’ve praised Kris and Allison. He could come out in a retro suit and croon away. Of course, the judges comment would be “we don’t know who you are as an artist” but they’re not going to offer him a straight compliment no matter what he sings.

Heck, if everyone did songs from Moulin Rouge it would be a good nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Roxanne, Your Song, Come What May, Lady Marmalade, Nature Boyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Moulin Rouge is my absolute favorite movie EVER. E.V.E.R. I would vote at least a little for anyone who did a song from it (except Gokey. Heh.).

I like this theme. I hope the songbook is more wide open than other weeks. And as I said earlier, I’m excited about the prospect of QT as a “mentor”, “guide”, whatever… even if he’s not qualified musically-speaking. I can’t wait to see what he has to say about everyone!

  • Tess

With all the GREAT STUFF everyone is coming up with for this theme…if any of the Idols pick a song that has been done before (unless they change it up drastically) they need to be sent packing!

  • Layla

But was that enough? Nooooooooooo. Wednesday we needed a full-court slobber. How much do you adore Adam à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Kara? Paula? Randy? Let us count the ways! Take as long as you like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ no worries. not the usual two minutes allotted, just praise all you like! And Adam, what do you think about how much they worship you? Any thoughts on that?

It’s not like he didn’t deserve it considering the show ran over and he did an effin ¨’ brilliant job.

I do wish, however, that they would save some of that slobber for my girl Allison.

  • WinkyDink

    My two cents, for Adam:
No JCS. Too many easily-offended viewers.
    No ballad.
No song ever sung on AI by Clay, Taylor, or Cook (for different reasons).
    No Celine, no Freddy.

I hope that leaves some good songs! :)
“Gimme a head with hair, long, beautiful hair…” Hee!

  • cincyforanoop

End of The Road by Boyz2Men from the movie Boomerang would be my pick for Anoop!

  • lovecert

JAI HO from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Slumdog Millionaireà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ just HAS to be the group song! And they need to bring in the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“So You Think You Can Danceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ dancers to dance in the background in bright colorful Bollywood clothing.

    It would be EPIC!!

Oh yes! With Anoop at the front doing the cheesy moves!

  • karenw

    Ooooohà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦I actually like the thought of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Purple Rain.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Prince is selective about his music on Idol, though. Hmmmmmà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I would absolutely love to hear Adam sing Purple Rain, one of the female contestants on the X Factor sang it last year and blew people away with it and she went on to sing it on the X factor tour.

My dream song to hear Adam sing from Purple Rain would be The Beautiful One’s (complete with screaming while lying flat on his back at the end) but I know that’s not going to happen …lol

I’d also like to see him do 20th Century Boy from Velvet Goldmine .. I’d love him to have a chance to sing anything by Bolan or Bowie.

I like the suggestion of a Bowie like version of Nature Boy from Moulin Rouge but it’s probably too similar in tempo and emotion to this week’s performance so I think he may avoide the simple ballad types this next week.

How about some songs from Bond films?

View To A Kill – Duran Duran
    The Living Daylights – A-ha
Live and Let Die – A real rocked up version

Also Bowie’s Wild Is The Wind was originally written for a 1950′s film of the same name and recorded by Jonny Mathis (and apparently nominated for an oscar that year) .. or is that clutching at straws? …lol

  • kiwifan

End of The Road by Boyz2Men from the movie Boomerang would be my pick for Anoop!

While I think B2M would be a smart choice for Anoop, I can already hear Simon refusing to use the save by saying “I’m sorry Anoop but it’s the end of the road for you tonight”, lol

  • cheese

Yeah, I agree that B2M would be a poor choice for Anoop. The best thing I can come up with for him is Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” which is on the soundtrack of He’s Just Not That Into You. (Not sure how deep they can dig with their choices though). Anoop is a Keane fan and has performed “She Has No Time” before. The song was well-received when Blake sang it, IIRC, but it’s not one of those overdone on Idol songs. It would be something different for him.

I wonder if Kris will be safe this week and sing “Upside Down” or some other Jack Johnson song from the Curious George soundtrack. It’s right up his alley.

  • jersey

I haven’t read all the suggestions yet, you guys are verbose! That said, why do I have a feeling that we’re in for a week of all power ballads? I don’t want to be “treated” to a whole show of Aerosmith, Bette Midler, Celine Dion, etc. etc. etc. Hopefully someone will pick something more restrained. Otherwise, I think I’ll have a headache by the end.

ETA: And the only person who should even contemplate doing “Unchained Melody” is Adam, since we all know it’s Simon’s favorite song. If you don’t nail it, you’ve lost Simon for good!

  • cincyforanoop

Kiwifan, I thought of that and if Simon were to pull that lame response, Anoop should get On Bended Knee, and sing

    Simon, We belong together
    And you that I’m right
Why do you play with my head,
Why do you play with my mind?

Jersey, Adam would rock Unchained Melody, but I think Anoop could do it justice as well. He has the range to nail it. And just think if Simon were to love it?

This week should be fun. So many songs to choose from!

  • Sasha1

Quentin Tarantino and American Idol seems like an odd fit to me but maybe I’ve never seen any of his PG work! I kinda hope they give him free hand in directing the idols. At the very least, I expect Lil to channel her inner Kill Bill when she next confronts the judges.

In the meantime, why hasn’t anyone suggested “Can’t stop the music”? There are some songs from that movie that no one has touched on American Idol and I can just see Paula grovin’ her thing to The Milkshake and Kara shouting “The Artistry. Oh my gosh, the artistry” and Simon pretending he doesn’t love it. Can’t you.

And what about Jaws? Think laterally folks. This is Tarantino remember. Can’t you see Anoop doing this? Da dum. Da dum. Da da dum dum. Da da dum dum.

Yeah this could be interesting. Group song. The Van Traap kids from A Sound of Music turn into vampires from Dusk to Dawn while high on a hill with a lonely goatherd. Yep, I think this week could be really interesting!

  • grakky

What do you think of this one from the Bourne Trilogy for Adam, “Extreme Ways”? Change it up ala Mad World, could be a winner.

    How about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Pin Ball Wizardà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from the movie à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tommyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for Adam. That would rock!

    Wellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ I suppose now that Scottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s goneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ But, still maybe, no. :-)

I would have loved to have seen Scott do “Pin Ball Wizard!”

Here are my belated suggestions for Adam:

The obvious choice for Adam is “Come to Me, Bend to Me” from Brigadoon, which he performed here. But I don’t think it’s necessarily the best choice, as it will seem obscure to most of the audience and comes off definitely as musical theater.

I think the perfect choice would be Jeff Buckley’s “Last Goodbye” from Vanilla Sky. Yes, “Hallelujah” was in Shrek, but it’s too soon since Jason Castro’s rendition. Also from Vanilla Sky is Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill,” which Adam would do quite nicely.

My second pick,”God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys, was featured in Love Actually and Boogie Nights. I think AI already has this one cleared and Bowie recorded it, too — double bonus!

I would flove to hear him cover Matt Bellamy of Muse, but “Supermassive Black Hole” is not much of a vocal showcase. If Adam wants to break out some Axl, there are “Paradise City” (Can’t Hardly Wait) and “Sweet Child o’ Mine” (Big Daddy).

We have not seen the classic, retro side of Adam yet. If he wants to prove that he belongs in the company of true American idols like Sinatra and Ella, there is no better showcase than Cole Porter’s gorgeous “Night and Day.”

  • TheRealLife

    Here’s my choices for Matt

Elton John à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Your Song (Moulin Rouge), Tiny Dancer (Almost Famous)

Bruce Springsteen – Streets of Philadelphia (Philadelphia)

Peter Gabriel – In Your Eyes (Say Anything)

Aimee Mann à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Wise Up (Magnolia)

Alanis Morissette à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Uninvited (City Of Angels) I know strange choice but it could be really good stripped down on the piano. I also think it would pay off because it is so out of the box and if he pulled it off it would be very impressive.

Seal à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Kiss From the Rose (Batman Forever) He should be just on the piano without backing band or maybe he could throw in some strings with it.

Anything but Footloose, Everything I Do I Do It For You, or I Believe I Can Fly

  • kyliefan

I think all of them should sing something like these :

Allison: Maybe she should sing “This Kiss” (Faith Hill – from “Practical Magic” movie), that’s a fun song and I think it’s really suitable for a young girl like her! Other choices: Crazy For You (Madonna – from “The Vision Quest”) or Perfect Day (Hoku – from “Legally Blonde”) or even Then You Look At Me (Celine Dion, from “Bicentennial Man”)

Adam: Crazy (Alanis Morissette – “The Devil Wears Prada) or Uninvited (also by Alanis, from “City Of Angels”), Identify (Natalie Imbruglia – from “Stigmata”), Lady Marmalade (from “Moulin Rouge” – this will be an interesting choice for sure!) :lol_wp:

Matt: Music Of My Heart (Gloria Estefan & ‘N Sync – from the movie with the same name), Angel (Sarah McLachlan, from “City Of Angels – he should sing this the way Westlife did but I doubt anyone here know Westlife LOL) or Again (Janet Jackson, from “Poetic Justice”)

Anoop: True To Your Hearts (Stevie Wonder & 98 Degrees – from “Mulan”), For U I Will (Monica – from “Space Jam”), You’ve Got A Way (Shania Twain – from “Notting Hills”) or Can’t Fight The Moonlight (LeAnn Rimes – from “Coyote Ugly” – don’t know why I think he should sing this hehe!)

Kris: (Everything I Do) I Do It for You (Bryan Adams – from “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”), Turn Back Time (Aqua – from “Sliding Doors” but he must re-arrange it), You Are My Home (Vanessa Williams & Chayanne – from “Dance With Me”) or Kiss Me (Sixpence None The Richer – from “She’s All That”)

Lil: Are You Ready For A Miracle (Originally sung by Patti LaBelle but LeAnn Rimes covered it for “Evan Almighty” movie) (this song really needs a big voice but I’m afraid she will shout it!) or “I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You” (Tina Arena & Marc Anthony – “The Mask Of Zorro”), maybe even “Just Another Girl” (Monica – from “Down To Earth” but I’m not sure she can be good with an upbeat song like this)

Danny: don’t like this guy at all so I don’t know what he should choose, maybe I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman by Britney from “Crossroads” ??! LOL :lol_tb:

Anyway, I’m a newbie here so hi everyone! :biggrin_wp:

  • Sasha1

    But wait, there is more!

Adam: from Marie Antoinette, “Hong Kong Garden”, Siouxsie and the Banshees, “I want candy”, Bow Wow Wow; from Purple Rain, “Let’s go crazy” or “When doves cry”.

Matt: from American Graffiti, “That’ll be the day”, Buddy Holly

Danny: from Easy Rider, “Born to be wild”, Steppenwolf.

Allison: from Cabaret, “Cabaret”, Liza Minelli.

Bit left field but so is Tarantino!

  • spacebarshift

My picks are mostly Oscar-winning or nominated songs at http://idolatoz.blogspot.com

  • allisynk

    hmmmmmmmmmmm….

first of all, GREAT theme idea; I love movies and I love Idol so it’s a perfect combination! :D

can’t think of songs for Anoop, Kris or Lil at the moment but I would love to hear:

Adam: “Live and Let Die” from the James Bond film with the same name, BUT the Guns N’ Roses version of the song…OMG that would be so amazingly fantastic!

Allison: “Tomorrow Never Dies” from the James Bond film of the same name…I thought of this when I was thinking about Adam’s song; I don’t know if it suits her lyrically (the judges might say it’s too old-fashioned or whatever crap they always say), but Sheryl Crow kills it when she sings it and I know Allison could as well.

Matt: Since he’s a Disney fan, he could do something like “Go the Distance” from Hercules, lol

Danny: a very, very obscure song by Sister Hazel from the 10 Things I Hate About You soundtrack, called “Your Winter.” Listen/watch it here, even though the youtube vid is a bit strange and SUPER emo lol

That would be a good choice for Allison, too, as she could show her sweet, winsome side. Flove Leigh Nash!

My guess is that the Idols will have a list of songs to choose from and something tells me it has to do with AFI’s (American Film Institutes) Top 100 Songs from Movies. That being said here are my predictions (mostly from that list)

Anoop – Christopher Cross “Arhtur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do)” Arthur

Danny – Phil Collins “Against All Odds” – Against All Odds

Matt – Joe Cocker “Up Where We Belong” – An Officer and a Gentleman

Lil – Whitney Houston “I Have Nothing” The Bodyguard

Adam – Harry Nillson – “Everybody’s Talkin’ Midnight Cowboy

Kris – “Rainbow Connection” The Muppet Movie

Allison – Vanessa Williams “Colors of the Wind” Pocahontus

I like “Live or Let Die” for Adam. I think he would be terrific in this. Also, I think he would do good on “Would” by Alice in Chains from Singles. And “Behind Blue Eyes” , but I think I would like this for Kris also.

  • colette

Anybody ever do “Change the World” on Idol? Love that song, and as others suggested it would fit Kris well.

“Everybody’s Talkin’” was what I sent a link of earler — great tune, especially for anyone who can ace some high notes

Kris should do something he can rearrange tho and make his own. some of these songs don’t have much wiggle room

OK, kids, Randy Newman was mentioned: so who should do “You Can Leave Your Hat On” from that old Mickey Rourke movie? Would that be just a teensy risque for Idol? I can hear Matt on that one…

  • The Genius Predicts

Kris could do the Jason Mraz acoustic version of Rainbow Connection and knock it out of the park. That is why I suggested that song for him.

Oh, 9 1/2 Weeks. Pretty creepy movie, but a fabulous soundtrack. I’m not sure of the Randy Newman connection (although he is awesome), but “You can Leave Your Hat On” was sung by Joe Cocker (equally awesome).

Nope, nope. Copy/Paste/Delete error. I originally had Death or Glory on there for her, but she is such a mushmouth (as much as I love her!) and decided to go for the other one instead. Didn’t highlight enough to paste over. Epic Fail.

  • jaylynn

A great song for Adam would be Fuel’s “Won’t Back Down” from the 2003 movie Daredevil. He’d probably have to do away with the background lyrics, but he’d still be able to nail it…homerun for sure!

  • Margaux

As many of you have already noted, there isn’t a song that hasn’t appeared in a soundtrack.
Today while I was going about my business I was thinking about Adam and Danny.

Danny needs to tone down the cheese to move me out of the neutral zone. Someone who has his range and tone but is dairy-free is Mr. Elvis Costello, and I just happened to hear his cover of Nick Lowe’s “What’s So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding”, which we remember from Bill Murray’s classic Karaoke scene in Lost in Translation. Danny should rent the movie, sing the song, and score cred points.
More likely he’ll do anyone of the Bryan Adams movie themes.

When I heard Adam’s Mad World, something about the singing reminded me of Chris Isaak. His best soundtrack contribution was “Baby’s Done a Bad Bad Thing” from Eyes Wide Shut. “Wicked Game” was in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart. Either would work for me.

And when I think of Chris Isaak, I can’t help but think of his musical mentor, Roy Orbison. Someday before we’re done with season 8, Adam NEEDS to do Roy Orbison, because almost nobody can. “Pretty Woman”, “Only the Lonely” both inspired movies, or at least movie titles. Put on the Elvis hair, the throwback suit, assume some rockabilly swagger, and middle America will love Adam Lambert.

Matt Giraud: Any Randy Newman theme, from “I Love LA” to “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”.

that’s as far as my inspiration carries me tonight.

  • SpenserJ

    Few more suggestion:

Adam: Into The Groove (Madonna – from “Desperately Seeking Susan”), Turn The Beat Around (Gloria Estefan – from “The Specialist”)

Anoop: Where You Are (Jessica Simpson ft. Nick Lachey – from “Here On Earth”) or Let Me Let Go (Faith Hill – from “Message In A Bottle”)

Danny: There You’ll Be (Faith Hill – from “Pearl Harbor”) or American Pie (Madonna – from “The Next Bext Thing”)

Matt: I’m Alive (Celine Dion – from “Stuart Little 2″) or For All We Know (The Carpenters – from “Lovers And Other Strangers”)

Allison: We Can (LeAnn Rimes – from “Legally Blonde 2″) or Beautiful Strangers (Madonna – from “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”)

Lil: One Day I’ll Fly Away (Nicole Kidman – from “Moulin Rouge”) or The Way We Were (Barbra Streisand – from the movie with the same name)

Kris: Need To Be Next To You (Leigh Nash – from “Bounce”) or Foolish Games (Jewel – from “Batman & Robin”)

Anyway, I think the group will sing Lady Marmalade on the result night

  • PokeSmot

I wanna hear Allison sing that song from Pulp Fiction, “Son of a Preacher Man”.

I wanna hear Anoop or Gokey sing “Original Sin” and/or Adam sing “Devil Inside” (INXS). :devil_tb:

I wanna hear Lil sing “If you should lose me” (Etta James).

Kris would be great on (I don’t know what it’s call exactly, but it’s also from Pulp Fiction)…that song that Bruce’s singing; it has the words “Captian Kangaroo” in it.

Wait, do Disney movies count? Cuz Matt can do something from Aladdin or maybe “Kiss the Girl” from Little Mermaid…oh, the possibilities are endless…must go watch some Disney to refresh….I’ll be back, y’all.

Oh, and I love y’all hair this evening.

Anybody ever do à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Change the Worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on Idol? Love that song, and as others suggested it would fit Kris well.

Chris Richardson from season six did it during inspirational songs week. Not that your average viewer would remember this. So I still think it’s a good pick for Kris. I love that song and I love Eric Clapton.

Somebody could also do “Have a Little Faith in Me” which was also on the Phenomenon soundtrack.

What about Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing from the Armeggedon Soundtrack for Adam. He’ll do that song amazingly!

I don’t think I’d want Adam to sing anything by Queen. Obviously he’d nail it but I don’t see how he could sound sufficiently different to the original not to attract the “karaoke” or “not-as-good-as-Freddie” comments.

I’d think I’d died and gone to heaven if he ever sang a Muse song on the Idol stage – I practically worship the ground Matt Bellamy walks on – but Supermassive Black Hole wouldn’t be ideal as the vocal line is to my mind a relatively minor part of what makes the track great. (If he ever gets a chance to sing “Unintended”, however, he should leap on it – that track is all about the soaring vocal and could have been written for him!)

Oh, and if he sings “My Heart Will Go On” I will be on the next plane out to L.A. to wring his silly neck. :O

I’ve discovered that “Dust in the Wind”, one of my favourite of his YouTubes, was featured in a film in 2003 (can’t remember which one now) so I suppose technically that would be within the theme, but it probably wouldn’t be good to do two slow, “spotlight” songs in a row. I’d still love to hear it though, if only to get my hands on a great studio version :D

I like the idea of him singing “Wicked Game” but if he gave it the Ring of Fire sensuous treatment I’m not sure A.I. the family show could cope :O

I don’t actually know what I want him to sing but I’m hoping he goes uptempo and vibrant. I think he should have reeled in enough dedicated supporters by now that he can afford to cut loose and let his freak flag fly for a week without coming to any harm – the judges would save him anyway if the unthinkable happened – because though subdued Adam is great he does need to keep those who like his more theatrical performances on board too.

I just hope the list they have to choose from isn’t as crappily narrow as I suspect…:(
