Thursday Ratings: CBS Wins the Night

Welp. With the mega-hit show, The Big Bang theory back from hiatus, American Idol took a big hit in the ratings, as predicted.  Big Bang knocked Idol back under a 5.0 rating in the key 18-49 demo.  And with Person of Interest returning to the schedule, Glee took a hit too. It was an all around win for CBS last night. Via TVByTheNumbers

On FOX, American Idol  earned a 4.5, down seven tenths from last week’s 5.2 adults 18-49 rating. Glee scored a 2.1, down from last week’s 2.6

I’m actually sad about how poorly the 30 Rock series finale did. Oh, Liz Lemon!

  • TheGreatXL

I’m surprised to see Glee is down to 5 to 6 million viewers. Yeah, it’s not as good as it used to be, but much worse on TV gets rated higher. I’m guessing Season 5 will be it’s last for syndication purposes. :(

  • mjsbigblog

Season 4, and its dual story lines, is a great improvement over the clustereff that was Season 3. But Glee’s time as a pop culture phenomenon has come and gone, and no amount of tinkering with the formula will bring it back to its once dizzying heights.

Still, the show has an extremely devoted following of largely young people. Their teen ratings are pretty good. And the show does decently in DVR and VOD.

I post a lot of Glee stuff here not only because I like the show, because that stuff gets hits. Don’t let the small number of comments fool ya. :).

  • mjsbigblog

Oh…that’s right! The Office has fallen hard since its glory days too.

The big Bang Theory is as much as a part of the culture now as AI (and Glee for that matter) once were. Everywhere I go I hear people quoting “Sheldon” or referencing a BB moment, just like it used to be with Idol.  So, BB is doing remarkedly well for a show in its sixth year, but Idol is holding up pretty well for a show twice as old. i doubt BB will be here for another six. Even How I Met Your Mother, still a joy to watch after eight years, is wrapping it up at nine ( by choice). To come in second in that field – one where each show has it’s devout fanbase- is no small feat.

(and I also know of a large group of local 30 Rock fans who taped the show to watch en mass on Saturday night – the days of having to watch live – especially when it is something so emotional as the end of a favorite show – are long over!)

Does the Voice get better rating than AI or is Idol still #1 for singing shows?

  • Kitwana

A real test of Glee’s continued appeal is its continuing ability to attract “A” list guest stars. That will depend on how much appearing on Glee can boost a career. Jessica Sanchez and her team appear to be relying on her multi-episode arc on Glee to launch her career. I wish her the best but I just don’t think Glee has the juice to launch careers or create real buzz anymore. If sales are lower than expected, I think her fans can reasonably blame Glee.

MJ: High hits for Glee posts are good but it may also show that people are no longer invested enough in the show to watch full episodes. The lack of comments also shows a low level of fan investment in the show.

So far, AI has gotten better ratings.  It’s still early, so who knows what will happen as the season plays out.

The Big Bang Theory and AI hurt one another, even though TBBT drew better ratings.  It’s last original broadcast scored over a 6.0 in the demo.

AI’s rating will probably go up, even if it’s just by a tenth of a point, and based on the half hour numbers, Glee will be adjusted down.

  • justmefornow

They shouldn’t blame Glee. If it happens, then they should blame the album delay. She should have had her album out in the fall.
I think when P2 took off like he did, she no longer became a priority for Interscope. Now they’ll just bank on Glee and if her album takes off, good, if not they’ll cut their losses quickly like they did with Haley.

    Pia, Haley, and possible Jessica.
Interscope treats it’s AI female Idols like sh!t.

  • sweetmm

At last we see “real” numbers with no more AI vs. re-runs; its not that bad.  I would say if AI maintains above 4 till the end, it can consider the season be great.

  • mjsbigblog

The lack of comments also shows a low level of fan investment in the show.

Glee fans are PASSIONATE. There is a very intense Glee fan base. I get SEO hits on my glee posts, meaning, there are fans out there searching for this stuff. Conversations about Glee are happening where the kids hang out. On Tumblr and Twitter. I literally have a Tumblr account JUST to track Glee news.

Glee fans are numerous and intense enough that they are able to trend Glee topics on twitter, sometimes daily. And it an international phenomenon. Those kids are famous , literally, all around the world.

An intense fan investment, driven by a desirable demo, is what will keep Glee on the air, maybe even for a few more seasons.

AI is still with better ratings, but The Voice had a lot of episodes with 4.5 against DWTS, CSI and their 20 millions viewers, winning only in the demo.

This episode yesterday was like an average episode of The Voice, but Idol will probably continue to reign on Wednesday.

  • HermeticallySealed

Yep yep.  #SantanaLovesBritney or somesuch was trending worldwide last night through a good portion of the show.  It’s hard for me to really trust Neilson’s accuracy for the simple fact that there are just too many other ways that young people watch shows that don’t involve tv’s.

  • Larc

Glee probably has another season or two left in it on FOX.  It it were on CBS instead with those numbers, its future would likely be in doubt.

  • Joystickenvy

I’m sure glee still has its devoted fans, but I’ve gone from nervously watching the ratings to almost hoping it gets canceled so I won’t feel compelled to watch it anymore :/  I’m no longer sure the show was ever good lol

Idol will be on until Fox can no longer squeeze an ounce of ratings out of it.  I mean look at how long The Simpsons has been on the air.  They haven’t exactly got a ratings monster to replace it with anyway.

  • mjsbigblog

Yes, the fact that FOX is pretty much tanking ratings wise, will also help Glee. And Idol too–which is still FOX’s superstar show–other than football, of course.

Relative to the network’s other scripted series, Glee’s ratings are OK.

  • mjsbigblog

There is definitely a contingent of people who hate-watch Glee. lol.

  • chillj

Idol is actually doing substantially better than I think they ought.

  • Hazehel

I get SEO hits on my glee posts, meaning, there are fans out there searching for this stuff.

I’m curious, do you get breakdown of the hits you get for Glee and Idol by country?  Is Glee still popular in the US, say, or is it mostly outside of US?   I don’t watch Glee, just curious about the the international fans of shows like Glee and Idol.  What about the popularity of Idol inside vs. outside US?

Idol’s ratings dropped a fair chunk compared to last year (5.5 to 4.5, although Idol may be adjusted up to 4.6 later), but that is expected.  Interestingly TBBT also fell a little compared to last year (5.5 to 5.3), not sure if that means TBBT has peaked.

  • Kitwana

MJ: I see the Glee trending topics. It is impressive but it’s all relative. At its height, Glee had multiple trending topics per episode. David Archuleta’s Philippines mini-series Nandito Ako had 59 worldwide twitter trends over its month long run, frequently with 3 twitter trends per episode. That is without the killer promo Glee inexplicably continues to get. Like Glee, there were multiple Tumblrs and youtubes dedicated to the mini-series with young people debating which of two young women David’s character Josh should pick. I do agree, however, that mjsbigblog is unlikely representative of Glee’s younger demo and that the lack of comments here may not indicate lack of interest.

Tina Fey said to record Big Bang Theory and watch the 30 Rock finale.  People didn’t listen to her.

  • bahogbugan_simj

yay person of interest.  the only show that matters that night.

  • Shoriagirl

Big Bang Theory is the only show on TV that I watch live, so go BBT!
