Taylor Hicks was recently interviewed by ABC News Radio.   Check it out here:

Taylor talks about: Why he chose to make his new record stylistically diverse, cross-promoting the record with the Grease tour, recording a duet with Season 5 contestant, Elliott Yamin, and meeting all his fellow Idols at Disney World. “I loved being with all the winners and all the Idols” said Taylor “It was really cool being under the same roof.”

    Good luck, Taylor . :)

Geesh… I can only imagine how fun it would’ve been to have seen Taylor and Elliott recording in the studio together. I’ll bet they had a blast!

These songs get better with each listen – Taylor has done himself proud with these fabulous studio musicians and songs. Can’t wait to see him perform these live because as all Taylor fans know, that’s when the songs come alive !!!!!

What Taylor said about he and Elliott both being students of the music and artists is precisely what first attracted me to them. One of the things that drives me crazy about some of the Idols is that they seem to have no knowledge of the history of what is supposedly their “passion”. In music, particularly, it seems to me that knowing what came before you serves you well and gives you a base to build your own sound from.

Taylor is right that his voice blends very well with Elliott’s. That song is one of my favorites on the cd.

    TAYLOR HICKS: Yà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢all know I love à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the season he was on was one of the best. His career has taken off since winning, and today heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll sing his new hit, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Right Is Rightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from his CD, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Distanceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ !

    Great interview, TY MJ

His album is in the Target ad today and it list extra song so I guess I’ll go there Tuesday. I usually watch Ellen most days but I’ve got Wednesday marked on the calendar. She is a big Daughtry fan and I know at the end of season 5 she cushed all over him and was a little bit distant with Taylor. She maybe from New Orleans but she’s more into rock than soul. I realize soul is not a real popular genres and maybe that’s why he mixed this album up some adding some other flavors. Can’t wait till Tuesday as I need something new in my life and car CD player.

I can’t remember when I last heard Taylor as confident and articulate (for him) in an interview – print or otherwise. None of his answers seemed calculated or targeted to a particular market. Right after Idol I know he was inclined to push away from his connection to the show in order to be a “serious artist”. He seems at peace with his place in the business and I hope there is still enough interest to help him move a few hundred thousand units.
I am one who always enjoyed his covers of others material – and have seen him live twice. For some artists – it seems simple to formulate a hit…for others near impossible. I enjoy what I’ve heard of the new disk – but it doesn’t compare to his live performances.

I was always attracted to his story more than his music – struggling artist standing alone with little support…persevering and finding a way for his voice to be heard…and it’s still a great narrative.

Thanks, MJ – very nice interview. I am looking forward to his new CD and am pleased that Tuesday is almost here. :-)

i think taylor will be lucky if he sells 50K on his first week

  • bestboy

You can look at Bo Bice’s second release as a guideline…think it topped out at around 50K.

  • judy

Bobbi, the lack of history and knowledge of music by some of these Idols drives me crazy also. This year’s final 13 doesn’t look too promising in this department.

bestboy, very expressive. You have a way with words and should be a writer!

Taylor does have a compelling backstory as the struggling musician. He gets no respect from AI and is often the brunt of jokes, which makes his story ongoing and even sad at times. He is enjoying a career and doing modestly well in it, but I would love to see him triumph over those who so thoroughly enjoy writing and speaking of his “failures.”

In case anyone is interested, I’m watching Idol Wrap and they just said that Taylor was going to be on on Wednesday.

  • beachn

Taylor dj’d on an LA radio station tonight for an hour playing and commenting
on some of his favorite songs. Here’s a link to his set list. You can hear some of the musical influences on his new album. One thing about Taylor, he stays true
to himself. I hope The Distance has respectable sales for him.

Love the relaxed Taylor I’m hearing in this interview.

Love Elliot and Taylor together – their live performance of Tied to the Whipping Post was smokin’ hot. Always been one of my post-AI Taylor favorites.

  • chewsday

I can’t imagine Taylor’s sales being anywhere near 50k. I would guess closer to half that figure. The album is much better than his first post-Idol album, but the hype isn’t there, nor is the big label money. I don’t think the early numbers will tell the story of this music; we will have to look at the numbers after a year or so and then we’ll know if it was a monetary success or not.

I think Taylor will do great on selling this cd. Some of you forget that he starred in Grease on Broadway and is starring in the road tour of Grease. On this Grease tour he sings his single after the show. ‘What’s Right is Right’. I think this will sell a lot of cds. People are already asking to buy them after the show. Go Taylor!!

  • calimari

I like what I’ve heard of this CD (with the exception of the single) much more than the last CD, and I think he will be killer in concert with it. I mean, there were only a few songs on the last CD that I really liked, but his live versions of all of them were great. So these songs should be fantastic live. He’s always indicated he’s more of a live performer – I just think he hasn’t found a producer that really knows how to bring that live experience to tape, although this is much closer. I have no expectations of him having a triple platinum CD or anything like this -I just want him to have a nice, solid showing & earn enough from the CD and shows to keep going on to the next CD. Keep the good stuff coming.

  • Easy

I don’t give a rats behind what it sells. It’s good music.

If you judge music on sales numbers, I feel sorry for you.

  • bestboy

Sales don’t necessarily equate to good music…but sales allow the artist freedom to continue booking more shows and to put out more music…dismal sales will lead to less and less exposure.

  • Paula

Taylor may not have huge sales the first week, but I think with his touring and shadow tours, the CD will sell well. Plus, since he owns the company, he gets more for each sale.
