It appears that the Knebworth based, Sonisphere 2012 has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.  The Festival was to feature Queen with Adam Lambert fronting the band.

In a statement on the Official Queen website, the band expressed their regret at the news.

“It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012?.

Kiss and Faith No More were also set to headline the festival which was scheduled to run from July 6th-8th.

There has been no official word from Sonisphere.co.uk or festival organisers, Kilimanjaro.

Adam is still set to perform with Queen in Moscow, Russia on June 30.

Looks like you can’t buy tickets from the Sonisphere website either. Guess it is true.

  • Nele621

I’m reading that people are blaming Adam Lambert for the low ticket sales. (They didn’t like the idea of him singing with Queen.)

  • http://twitter.com/RedRoseQueen1 RedRoseQueen1

Fans of both Queen AND Lambert are extremely distressed at this sad turn of events. All we can HOPE is that Brian May and Roger Taylor will instead, do a couple one-off concerts in the USA with Lambert! They would totally SELL OUT!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

The Sonisphere in Sweden is cancelled also. Adam has a far reach! LOL!

  • http://twitter.com/RedRoseQueen1 RedRoseQueen1

That is 110% NOT TRUE Nele. The over-whelming MAJORITY of both Lambert AND Queen fans were looking forward to this! Low ticket sales for the entire 3 days of the festival are the reason.Sheesh! Times are tough, economically and the acts don’t come free.

  • Anonymous

And they are idiots.  No one is going to avoid a concert like that for one act, especially when you can just leave before it.  There were people blaming Faith No More and a lack of newer acts as well, doesn’t mean it’s true.

  • Anonymous

    Where are you reading that??

  • Anonymous

Last year, Sonisphere was held in 10 other countries across Europe. It looks like those events are cancelled also. This cancellation affects all these countries and well over a hundred individual bands.

I was just about to post that Sonisphere Sweden was cancelled also. Can they blame Adam for that too, lol?
I think the promoter is having issues. There a lot of bands affected here, not just Queen, big bands. I have a feeling Queen and a few others will book other venues. Remains to be seen.

  • Anonymous

Well there you go, it must be true.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Why blame Adam for a lack of sales, Queen is but one act.   Could be that Queen was the one people most eager to see.   Kiss and other acts aren’t getting this flak!  Obviously people aren’t buying tickets.   The world is in financial bad shape.

  • Anonymous

It’s just such a shame that there isn’t enough interest in seeing so many of these bands anymore.  I can’t believe they couldn’t sell tickets.  Sad.

  • Mateja Praznik

When the line-up was first announced, I saw many people complaining that it wasn’t strong enough. Also, supposedly there was too much rock and not enough metal.

Oh and yeah, some snobs just can’t get over the fact that American Idol reject (karaoke singer) was supposed to front Queen. It’s just sad.

Oh and there are mentiones of this other festival that supposedly has a better line-up.

It’s just a handful of idiots/haters on twitter.

  • Anonymous

That’s silly. There were over 35 bands that were scheduled to perform at Knebworth. There was something for everyone and there were tickets available for individual days where the line-up didn’t include Queen.

I haven’t read any comments like the ones you referred to. Where are you seeing all these illogical comments? Link please.

  • Anonymous

Adam obviously has a lot of power to affect concerts he’s not even going to be at. I agree with you, Queen and the other big bands will just book other venues. I’m still hoping for a performance in the States.

  • Anonymous

Boy that Adam sure is powerful to take down a three day festival with 40+ acts.

    Gimme a break.

I’m sad for him though, he was looking forward to it.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

Man, Queen’s website is so slow opening. I guess the rumor is true. I hope people don’t have trouble getting refunds.

  • mmb

Lol, really? Blaming Adam alone for the cancellation of a 3 day festival with 30 something acts many of whom are big names?? That’s completely ridiculous and I doubt anyone with a shred of common sense thinks that. I’m sure all if the acts, and fans of those acts, are disappointed.

  • Anonymous

It is a bummer, but hopefully the Moscow date will survive.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that Queen would no longer need to be exclusive to Sonisphere, and theoretically could book other dates in Europe now.

I’m pretty sure they could fill a few venues.  I’ve been lurking on the Queen board, and some of the fans were put off by going to a festival (which is apparently muddy, smelly, and hard to get to).  They might be more into concerts that have some seating and don’t require as much travel expense.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

Moscow is completely independent of Sonisphere. Not related at all. There should be no reason for why it doesn’t go on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003538594414 Cindy Johnson

And why are 10 other festivals also cancelled?.  The world is full idiotic opinions.  There are close to 100 acts involved in this, I hardly think it can be blamed on Adam.  Has anyone heard that most of the world is on the verge of bankruptcy? People need to get a grip on reality-soon.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Adam is responsible for the cancellation of festivals that he isn’t even appearing at?  lol

  • Anonymous

I’ve actually seen a couple idiotic tweets to that effect, as well, saying that if Sonisphere is canceled, they blame Adam Lambert.  It makes me sad for him, but it’s absolutely not true that it’s solely because of Adam himself.  I read that Sonisphere Sweden has also canceled, and Queen+ Adam weren’t even scheduled for that.  The problem might be one of mixing genres, but for a heavy metal enthusiast to say they’re not going to go to a festival to see their favorite because Queen got someone they don’t like to front their band is complete crap.  The festival was two days long, and for most people, if they don’t like a particular band in a lineup, they go see who they want to see and avoid who they don’t care to see.  It’s more likely trolls on the internet excited to have been handed something negative to spew about Adam.

I hear from financial pundits that Europe is ready to collapse.  Dire predictions never (or hardly ever) come to pass.  People may be concerned that the woes of Greece will spread.  Young people especially may be out of work and out of money.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

Aw I’m sad for Adam because I know he was excited about the gig, but it sounds like it was a much further reaching problem than some hardcore fans butthurt about Queen continuing to play with a guest frontman rather than hanging up their instruments without Freddie.

I do wonder if the Moscow concert will still be on though, since it was only booked as a warm up for Knebworth. Oh well, whatever happens hopefully someday in the future Adam will get to sing with them again since he had so much fun last time.

  • milwlovesadam

    Queen will be fine.

    Adam will be fine.

Europe is entering a financial quagmire.

I say bring Queen with Adam to the states.

I could only hope to snag a ticket!!

  • Anonymous

While it may be true that the economy is in part to blame, I just read that there are two major festivals in that area each year, Sonisphere & Download Festival.  It said in one of the articles I was reading that this year, the line up at Download is considered to be better, and usually metal fans choose one or the other to go to (due to the cost).  They said this year it seems they are choosing Download more, which is headlined by Ozzy Osbourne.

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

Now I won’t get the second set of Adam-performing-Queen-songs videos. Or all of the interviews afterwards. Dammit.

PS. People blame Adam for the cancellation of the Sonisphere? Lol, he’s given lots of clout, isn’t he.

  • Ron

The official announcement isn’t going to made until tomorrow March 29th but I’m afraid it will confirm what we seem to already know.

Don’t know how poor ticket sales have been cited with 3 months to go to buy tickets.  I’m sure many people planned to buy their tickets much closer to the concert date when they were sure they’d be able to attend.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WIHKL34XDORTS2UZP4SWUUTG3U randi

It looks like the entire festival, Sonisphere, is cancelled not just Knebworth.

I’m intrigued and would love to have a conversation with anyone who believes Adam is so powerful or important that he causes an entire festival, covering multiple countries/venues/acts to be cancelled merely by being asked to sing with the band Queen.

It’s a shame because all parties seemed to be looking forward to the event.  However, no one will be so devastated that they won’t be able to continue on with their lives and careers.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure they probably know based on past years, how things are going to go.  If sales are way down already and Download Festival (their competition) sales are way up, they can probably get a pretty accurate assessment of what they are in for.  Really sad.

  • Anonymous

I saw a number of comments from people saying that they were trying to save up for the tickets. A few people even said they had taken on second jobs to pay for it, so it sounds like the price was a bit prohibitive as well.

We are really sorry to tell you that there will be no Sonisphere Festival in Sweden this year. A combination of logistics, some bad luck and so has meant that we could not collect a festival this year. Thanks for your support and we will do everything we can to be back soon.

Being from America, I had heard of Glastonbury, but never this festival. Perhaps they were hoping Queen would be a huge selling point, but Queen were never the Beatles, this whole vibe about them being the greatest rock band ever had always been a bit of hype, although surely their cult has grown with leaps and bounds since Mercury’s death but his voice is so unique, even with Adam Lambert, who can sing the hell out of those songs and would be great, it’s still not the same and you can’t expect the same excitement.  But they still have a gig with Adam in Moscow so it’s still all good, I look forward to hearing the videos because I do think Adam is the best singer to take on the songs with them.

Being from America, I had heard of Glastonbury, but never this festival. Perhaps they were hoping Queen would be a huge selling point, but Queen were never the Beatles,

Queen were involved with only one of the weekends of this event so if any band could be seen as a “selling point” it would probably be Metalica who was scheduled to headline Poland, Switzerland, Finland and Spain.

  • Anonymous

Glastonbury isn’t being held this year. They are “taking a break” due to the state of the economy in Europe.

  • http://twitter.com/xsailorvenusx Jackie Vanwoert

They’re called Krisberts/Idolberts. No one performer has enough power to not only have one festival shut down, but all the other ones they’re not even performing at either.

  • Anonymous

So… this data makes it appear that these organizers took a big gamble trying to stage this year’s festival and lost… big.  *shrugs* Oh well, it happens. Not a good look though, these across the board cancellations.  I believe poor tix sales and poor planning were huge factors, coupled w/the declining economy. A perfect storm that resulted in this fustercluck of cancellations.

  • Anonymous

I believe all sonisphere concerts are cancelled this year due to poor sales in general.

Just heard this news about Sonisphere cancellation.  What a shame!  Well, I can’t see why the Moscow gig won’t go as scheduled even if it was mostly a warm up for Sonisphere.  Russian fans have bought tickets and are no doubt looking forward to this.  Since they are set to perform there anyway, I can only hope maybe Queen will be able to book another show closer to the U.S. now that they don’t have this commitment and are all ‘warmed up’ from Russia!

I am very disappointed right now, but life happens, and I hope that Queen and Adam very seriously consider adding a couple of concerts (near my home town).

After the EMA’s, Roger/Brian said the phone was ringing off the hook – would think from this that a number of possibilities/offers were in the mix.  Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Queen/Adam collab pop up in one or more other places.  Looking forward to that – Adam singing Queen is pure dynamite.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, as excited as I was about Adam being asked to do Sonisphere, I actually think I’d be even more excited were another opportunity to come up at a different venue.  We saw Adam at the EMAs, so we know he would perform well, but no matter how great he did there, being the last place Freddie performed put added emphasis on the event, I think, with expectations being that much higher.  I really, really hope Moscow is still a go, and I hope they come up with some other gig, and actually one that will have greater visibility for Adam here in the US than Sonisphere would have given him.

  • Anonymous

Yes – the USA would be fab – can you imagine the reaction of Adam’s fan base if that happened?   Woah!

Sure, we knew some purists hated the idea,  but also on Twitter are a lot of people disappointed that they won’t be doing the show.  No matter who Queen has front them draws some controversy because there are those who think no one should ever “replace” Freddie, and, with Adam, you have the added stigma of having been a contestant of a karaoke show.  Some people will gripe and complain no matter what decision is made.   But, like I said, I’m seeing a lot of sad people out there, and we know much of the media, both here and in the UK, thought it was a good match.  I really think something else will come up for them.  Brian and Roger obviously didn’t give two hoots about the naysayers, and they seemed hyped about doing another concert together.

I’m sure there are many festivals that will still take place this summer, but there are many that are cancelling or changing their prices. One of the festivals last summer, where the headliners were Muse and MCR, had to offer their tickets for less than face value. It’s simply a sign of the current economic climate.

That said, I also know that everything happens for a reason and that a ‘delay is not a denial’ … it just means that something even better is coming.  I’m sure this is how ‘evolved’ Adam sees it too.  There is always something positive to take away from what appears to be a negative situation.  I believe it’s a blessing with a definite silver lining even if we don’t know what that is yet.

Indeed, he is very admirable to pattern my way of thinking and believing after since I’m already inclined.  That’s why I was drawn to him beyond the music … how he lives his life.  I just wish that more of his fans would see it as he does without so much over-reaction at times.  Oh well, if it was a perfect world …

I’m firmly in the boat that discussions are going on behind the curtain right now. No telling what will happen but I have no doubt that Queen and Adam’s peeps are talking with “others” who I’m sure are looking at alternatives for them to perform this summer. This gig was too good for all of them and the Moscow one is still on so why not find another venue and do a concert.

If you have plane tickets I would wait an see for a bit. For a fee you should be able to change the tickets to fly another time. If you cancel the money is just gone (unless you have refundable tickets).

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

Yeah they may or may not be able able to put something together at this point, but it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that they are trying. Heck the cancelation announcement hasn’t even been officially made, that blurb from the Queen site was not officially posted yet, it’s only a quirk in their site design that allowed ninjas to spot the first sentence of a potentially impending press release.

If I had plane tickets I would wait a few days before canceling to see how it all shakes out just in case. It might be for nothing, but it can’t hurt.

  • cwm

It’s official. I just received this email, moments ago:

    Dear [ ]:

It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012.

Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar.

Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect.

We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment.  We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can’t fulfil what we set out to do.

A full refund will be processed back onto your card, please allow 5-7 working days for the refund to clear.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact See Tickets at http://www.seetickets.com/CustomerService.

    Kind regards,

    Team Sonisphere.

    Sigh. :(

Sounds like deep financial troubles for the promoter. In fact, it sounds like they were concerned whether they could pull off the festival before they even announced it a month ago.

I would love to know where your glaring headline about lack of ticket sales comes from, in everything I’ve read in the last 24 hours including the
official’ statement, no where has the ticket sales, or lack of been mentioned as a factor.
And wow to Adam for having all that power to get concerts across Europe cancelled…
As somebody who was going I’m pretty disappointed, but I’m keeping everything crossed that Adam and Queen come up with something, heck they could still perform at Knebworth the same night, afterall  the venues available now. That would be great as I was only going to see them, none of the others that were performing. So maybe this will have a silver lining…

There is a statement from Queen on the Queen website, under the official Sonisphere statement:

    Statement from Queen

“We are disappointed to hear of the cancellation of the Sonisphere
Festivals as we were very much looking forward to performing with Adam
Lambert and particularly as the venue was Knebworth, our last stand with
Freddie. We apologise for the disappointment to all those who were
looking forward to seeing us. We are working to see if we can redress
the situation at some other venue.”

    Roger Taylor and Brian May

    There’s still hope!

MJ, only the UK leg is confirmed to be cancelled. European tour (which is mostly headlined by Metallica) is still on. Don’t freak out Metallica fans.

Lol, I wouldn’t exactly call it a glaring headline but I wondered where that ticket sales statement came from also. From the Sonisphere statement and what I’ve read elsewhere it seems the promoter was having some financial crisis for quite some time. It seems strange to cancel with 3 months still to go for sales.
However, it doesn’t matter now and I feel bad for you and others who had planned to go. There is hope from that Queen statement though that this situation could have a silver lining and an exclusive Queen gig might be in the works in the UK. It sure sounds like Brian and Roger are very disappointed but are working it out so I remain hopeful!

I think Roger and Brian are working on something, because they seem like they were looking forward to it and excited about performing with Adam again. I think Adam has a good idea of what’s in the works, but has to wait for Queen to make an official announcement. Please, let there be a performance in the States.

” Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very
challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have
spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the
    calendar.”
Damn, it just hit me that it looks like they were in trouble way before they even announced the line up. Wow, I would imagine all of the bands involved here are pretty upset. I am sure all these artists who signed up for this were totally unaware that Sonisphere was struggling. Queen could actually put together something on a smaller scale with a few of the other bands that were scheduled. This could still turn out to be lemonade, yay.

I’m not a promoter or an organizer, but I do question the assumption that “poor” ticket sales is the main reason for the cancellation. It sounds like the UK organizers have had some trouble. Could be sponsors, could be other event expenses were more than what was projected and ticket prices couldn’t cover it all. Could be something legal. Anyone who has ever pulled together an event like this knows the headaches that can come up. Some things simply can’t be dealt with.

There were still more than three months to go before Knebworth specifically, and didn’t tickets only go on sale a month ago? That is WAY too early to pull the plug if low sales to date were the only factor. It’s likely a combination of many things.
I’d love to know when and how Adam found out this news. I’d love to know the behind-the-scenes discussions that are happening right now even more.

Sonisphere Sweden announced on Facebook their festival was cancelled so it’s not just UK specific.

Agreed, Greece’s Sonisphere has it directly posted on their webpage that their version of the festival has been canceled.

Thanks :-) I slept on it and talked to some friends and colleagues and decided to proceed with the vacation. I could have spent another $300 and gotten the whole thing cancelled but I am overdue for a EU trip anyway. The excitement is gone and I’ll be just aimlessly walking the streets of London for 4 days wandering what to do with myself. But the real pain is that since I am sinking all my money and credit card debt into the aimless London stroll, I won’t have any $$ left in case Adam decides to do an one-off show somewhere in North America. Unless of course it is in LA, in which case I’ll just walk to the venue.

Thanks. I’ll be visiting other friends I have in France and Germany so hopefully it would still be a good trip. I am just royally angry though.. the adventure and excitement part of it is gone.

Wow. According to the Guardian, Greek, Turkish, Italian and Swedish Sonispheres are canceled, along with the UK festival, due to “touring problems, a weak economy and some bad luck” http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/mar/29/sonisphere-2012-festival-cancelled-queen?newsfeed=true

My condolences to everyone who bought tickets to fly to the UK :( otoh, a European vacation is an enviable thing, with or without Knebworth, so I’m also a bit envious. The UK is a great place!

I am confused about “The entire Sonisphere European tour has been cancelled.” because looking at the Sonisphere Festivals International website, it appears that Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and France are not cancelled.

Some of the locations are cancelled, some are not. The locations that aren’t cancelled may fall victim to the same type of problems or they may not. We will have to wait and see.

It would seem that they’re trying to keep open as many commitments as they can – logical.  The UK one is gone – that’s all I cared about – and, I presume, most people.  Never heard anyone talk about the other venues before now.
