Jannette’s brother posted this in the SYTYCD forum at Idol Forums:

I wish there was more exciting news to tell. Not everyone was junk. But the night as a whole wasn’t too hot. I can tell you Mary didn’t scream for anyone. I don’t know if some people will view that as a positive (?)

  • suebrody

Four ballroom dances? I’m already unexcited. And since Mary screamed a lot week one, and a fair amount week two, and if she didn’t scream this week that isn’t a good sign.

I hate to say that I don’t love this group, and I know it’s early, but…I don’t love this group.

  • unique28v

I like Randi and Evan, but it does seem like they get similar styles week after week…. Philip can’t catch a break. He goes from the tango to broadway. lol I love to watch hip hop but the routines have been so blah this year. I hope tonight changes that, but after reading the spoilers I don’t think so. Based on the different spoiler reports, I have a feeing Karla/Jonathan and Asuka/Vitolio are destined to be in the bottom 3 tomorrow night.

  • smartcookie

If I were Evan, I’d be pissed that they dished out a Gene Kelly routine this week and it went to *Phillip*. I think this is the first Gene Kelly-ish Broadway they’ve done (maybe the one with Gev and Courtney where they had a map?) and it’s Evan’s season and he doesn’t get it? Bummer. Maybe they’ll give him something from American in Paris later in the season. Not that that’s really Broadway (it’s movie) but those seem interchangeable on this show.

Fingers crossed that Karla and Jason survive. I don’t care about Caitlin or Jonathan, so if the pairings are in the B3, I’m only worried about Karla and Jason.

    Philip canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t catch a break.

I know! I loved the first outing, but the tango was not great. And now Singing in the Rain. Dammit. Someone with a wider knowledge of the show correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t it seem that what are meant to be revivals of “happy go lucky” tap or Broadway numbers just don’t work on this show? Even if you do it well, the other pairs do a romantic waltz or a drama-filled contemporary number or a very current hip hop thing, and the tapping just ends up seeming corny.

Especially when it’s a comedy number meant for two guys. Evan definitely could have done the most of it, with his Gene Kelly build, but I like him as well as Phillip, so I’m happy he got contemporary. I am sort of afraid who ever had this very old school Broadway bit was destined to go home, although you can never tell till you see the competition. Ah, Philip, dance! Save yourself! Eep.

Toni Basil…as in “Oh Mickey, you’re so fine” Toni Basil? LOL!!!

Evan’s my fave but I would like to see him do something a little different. A hip-hop routine, perhaps?

I do have to agree that Phillip does appear to be getting the shaft at the moment, but I think he and Jeanine are really popular and they have the pimp spot…I’m guessing they won’t be B3 this week. They weren’t even B3 after the terrible tango last week.

I think Phillip can pull off broadway. I really thought they would give Jason a contemporary number since he hasn’t danced his genre yet and I think he needs to. From this list I am really only looking forward to Randi and Evan doing a Mia routine. Too much ballroom and bad hip/hop is painful.

Oh there’s no need to pity either Phillip or Evan. They both came into this with big existing fanbases from their ample airtime in prior seasons, not to mention what they got this season. Plus they are both very likable and have strong partners. I’ll be very surprised if either of them hits bottom 3 before the top 10.

Someone on the spoiler thread at twop mentioned this and I agree – tptb are really giving Melissa and Ade a pretty easy go of it – contemporary, jazz, and rumba? Rumba certainly requires technique, but it’s not terribly difficult. As much as people think Kayla’s a TCO, I’m starting to wonder if Melissa is too.

I’m definitely excited to see Brandon and Janette’s hip hop after the way the twop spoiler talked about it. I have a sneaking feeling that Janette’s going to be more versatile than people are expecting. Which is fine with me because I like her. :)

I’m also looking forward to Evan and Randi’s contemporary. That should be good. And I hope Jason and Caitlin are good, but it doesn’t sound that promising from the spoilers. :( Which is disappointing because paso doble can be really exciting and good, when danced well. Sigh. I guess the are my Kourtni/Matt this season.

I do think Caitlin is overrated, but I also think Kayla is. But maybe they will prove me wrong since Im’ sure neither one will go home yet, even if they are in the bottom again.

  • lilbrusc102

Oh no, Toni Basil is the third judge? I didn’t really like her last year…she talked alot and was kinda loopy, but not in a fun Paula way….

aw, yay for The Veronicas performing….they’re probably my favorite teen pop/rock group, although I guess they probably aren’t teenagers anymore…

Gev the b-boy did great with Broadway, both in the number he did with Courtney to “New York, New York” (a Gene Kelly number from “On the Town”) and in the Nigel-choregraphed “Five Guys Named Moe.” Twitch and Joshua, both billed as hip-hop dancers even if we all know Joshua was cross-trained, also did very well in “Five Guys Named Moe.” Phillip should be fine.

I don’t think contemporary is a problem for Evan — it’s just that I selfishly would rather see him do the Gene Kelly piece than Phillip. I prefer to see the people who are good at something do that style, rather than make Phillip stink up a tango or Evan have to krump or something.

It was a fox trot, not called Broadway, but Danny and Anya dancing to “It Had to Be You” is my most favorite SYTYCD performance that really could work on Broadway (or on film). Very Fred and Ginger. I also loved the “Five Guys Named Moe” thing. Nigel did a great job on that one.

  • Dr. Tracey

I’m looking forward to the hip hop tonight because I usually enjoy Dave Scott’s routines.

  • smartcookie

Yeah, I think both Kayla and Caitlin are overrated, as well. I liked Ashley a lot, and I like Karla. But we still have four brunettes and three blondes, so probably another brunette will go before any of Nigel’s beloved blondes. Sigh. I think Karla and Janette are probably my favorites of the girls left. Janette has Brandon, so I don’t think they’re going anywhere, but I’m afraid Karla is not long for this show. Karla, Asuka, Janette (lucky to be with Brandon, a much-pimped guy) and Jeanine (lucky to be with Phillip, an even more pimped guy) are your remaining brunettes. Because of their partners, the two Js are going nowhere, so Asuka and Karla will be on the chopping block sooner rather than later, I think.

Among the guys, Evan and Phillip got way more focus than anyone else, with Brandon right behind. So they’ll stay awhile. Ade is getting pimped now and he and Melissa keep getting styles they’re suited to, so I don’t think they’re in any trouble. That leaves Jonathan, Jason, Vitolio and Kapono fighting it out for the last spot in the top ten. If they get their way, I think they’ll boot Jonathan, Vitolio and Jason, in that order, with Kapono and Kayla both in the Top Ten and on tour. But if K & K hit the B3, Kapono may be the sacrificial lamb to get Kayla a partner who can present her the way Nigel wants her presented.

For the girls, I think Janette and Kayla are the only ones you will definitely see in the Top Ten, although Caitlin strikes me as a possibility, too. I think the bootees will be Karla, Asuka and whoever paired with a good guy hits the bottom three first (Jeanine or Randi, in other words). Could be Caitlin if she doesn’t perform well and Nigel decides he doesn’t like her anymore. He’ll boot whoever he needs to boot to keep Kayla at the top of the heap.

Last weeks Hip/Hop was so bad that I am forgetting how great it is when someone you don’t expect to really hits it. I forget who choreographed last week but he sure didn’t do his dancers any favors. They can play to these kids strengths or expose their weaknesses and there is no hiding in hip/hop.If you are bad everyone can see it.

  • sunchick

    Toni Basilà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦as in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Oh Mickey, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re so fineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Toni Basil? LOL!!!

Oh yeah, THAT Toni Basil. And if you haven’t had the pleasure, let me tell ya, girlfriend will bring the crazy. To her credit, she did have a well regarded career as a choreographer, Oh Mickey one hit wonder status notwithstanding. But she considers herself a pioneer of street dancing, and, well, I’m guessing she didn’t get the memo that street dancing was the meme for last season. Should be fun.

Smartcookie, that’s a fairly astute analysis. I do enjoy Kayla, though, pimping and all…girl just has….something. I am hoping the partnership with Pono is good for her without it being another situation where they have to pimp Kayla at the expense of her partner, cuz that shit gets old. Karla has a good shot at outlasting Asuka and Caitlin, I think, if the judges realize how much she’s being held back by her partner. Jonathan really is the weakest guy left. After he’s gone, they all have various strengths and weaknesses.

I’m excited to see Brandon’s hip hop and whether Kupono and Kayla have any chemistry. Sounds like they got a sweet, romantic piece, and I’m a sucker for a waltz. And, of course, the triumphant return of Mia (go Evandy!)

  • Lexus

I have a feeling I’m the only Jonathan fan. I thought he was amazing last week!
