GAME ON! The two couples who were in danger last week–Asuka and Vitolio and Karla and Jonathan gave standout performances this week.   The couple in trouble?   Ashley and Kupono who danced a weak Shane Spark’s Hip Hop.

My favorite dance of the night was the equisitely beautiful contemporary from Karla and Jonathan.   So glad they weren’t eliminated last week!   But once again, another fine week of performances from this really talented crop of dancers…

Live Blog After the JUMP…

Randi and Evan – Jive by Louis Van Amstel – “Shake a Tail Feather” by Ray Charles – Neither of them have ever done Jive.   The dance is FUN! Heck yeah they look like they’re having fun. Brother Ryan in the house! Lil C says, “Outside the box with a bang…Evan I will say…it looks a little too smooth…feel a little more explosive…Randi? Firecracker! Good job. Solid beginning to the show” Lots of repeating of the word fun in order to use the counter from the video package. Ha. Mary says, “If there were two contestants I thought were built for the jive, it would be these two. You both are little powerhouses, but it fell short a little bit…but I thought you guys were really good.” Nigel says, “You are built for the jive…Evan I thought you would be better than you really were…Randi you were a little bit better.” 1-888-836-7601. – VIDEO

Melissa and Ade – Jazz by Sonya Tayeh -   “24 Hours (the Ashton Shuffle A-Bomb Remix)” by Terry Poison – The piece is about a high maintenance girl that’s hard to get. Another strong, impressive showing from Melissa and Ade. I love love love Sonya’s choreography. She’s so punk rawk.   Lil C says “That was Buck!” He tells Ade he’s everybody’s competition. He tells Melissa that she looked timid in rehearsal, but submerged herself in the performance.   Sonya in hot pink!   Mary gives them some tough love, “It was tough to find anything I didn’t love about that!” Psych!   “Phenomenal” says Mary.   Nigel says, “It allows you to show off your technique….congrats to the pair of you.” 1-888-836-7602. – VIDEO

Caitlin and Jason – Hip Hop by Shane Sparks -”Missin you”   by Trey Songz -   Wow. These guys have tons of personality.   Lil C says, “I did not love that….I think it kind of became a nightmare for you guys…it came off corny.”   It was kinda like MJ and Britney…it didn’t seem in synch…the chemistry didn’t work…you didn’t really nail it.”   Nigel says “I think we expect a certain hard hitting hip hop…I think what Shane’s done was a completely different style to make you look good and you looked really good doing that routine.” I’m with Nigel on this one. 1-888-836-7603.- VIDEO

Janette and Brandon – Disco by Doriana Sanchez – “Loving You is Really My Game” by Brainstorm   – Awesome lifts!   What fun.   Lil C says, “Right now I just saw the birth of progression in two amazing dancers…that was extremely amazing…Brandon…phenomenol job.”   He complimented Jeanette, despite her trip at the end. Mary says, “I have never seen a disco done that fast…the two of you just nailed it…you were gettin’ down out there.” And then Mary screamed! Nigel said, “I thought it was tremendous…one of the best disco routines we’ve ever had on the show.” 1-888-836-7604VIDEO

Asuka and Vitolio – Waltz by Louis Van Amstel – “Dreams are More Precious” by Anya – Louis says were going to see a completely different couple this week. Louis suggests Vitolio taps into the pain he feels as an orphan.   The dance is very emotional and afterward, Mary is just overcome. She tears up, “It was just painfully beautiful.”   She tells Vitolio he was the most honest he danced since the first time she saw him. “Asuka, the passion on your face tonight was so endearing…you went to another level.” Lil C says, “The choppy steps were made up for in your sincerity…you unfurl yourself for everyone to see…Asuka, you could have taken the lead…”   “The lines were sensational…you both brought a quality to the routine rarely seen…a different couple this week than I saw last week.”   They credit Louis for helping the dancers realize a beautiful routine. 1-888-836-7605. – VIDEO

Kayla and Max – Pop Jazz by Brian Friedman -”Hot Like Wow” by Nadia Oh – The dance is about a princess, and a prince who comes in with an ulterior motive–he wants to steal her throne.   Very cool dance. They were both really good.   Lil C says “Dancing is a language…I know how hard it is to pick up Brian Freedman’s vernacular…You did good Max….Kayla you were amazing.”   Mary says, “Max, you were quite a surprise tonight….Kayla you are just a beast out there.”   Mary puts her on the Hot Tamale train.   Nigel is happy to have Brian Friedman back and tells Kayla she is a front runner.   He tells Max his character kept up with Kayla and that the pair bring a lot to the program. 1-888-836-7606. – VIDEO

Karla and Jonathan – Contemporary by Stacey Tookey – “Falling Slowly” by The Frames -   The piece is about two stranger that have an accidental meeting that have to deal with temptation. Wow. This is sensational. Beautiful. They almost got eliminated last week!   The choreographer is new from SYTYCD Canada. Mary says, “I have never said this in 5 seasons…Jonathan you did that style better than your own…that is crazy!   The two of you are the underdogs…tonight the light is right on the two of you…I’m dizzy.”   Mary is spellbound! Nigel says, “I couldn’t believe it…there was no false moves…incredible…what a performance…last week you were both this close to being cut.” Nigel compliments Stacey on her routine.   “I thought you two danced it beautifully…I thought it was Buck!” – 1-888-836-7607. – VIDEO

Jeanine and Phillip – Tango by Tony Meredith -   “Violento (Up Mix)” by Bailango – Jeanine kicked Phillip in the nuts during rehearsal. Oops. That was a little rough.   Phillip looks totally out of sorts here. Mary gives Phillip an A plus for attitude, but a C- for technique.   “Jeanine, You’re a hot mama out there.”   Lil C says, “Phillip I’m a fan…you had no confidence through that whole routine…there was some disconnect going on…your knees were bent.”   Mary and Lil C get into a little tiff about Phillip’s bent knees.   Tony confirms that yes his knees needed to be bent. Nigel says “Phillip, you have an incredible following…it really is a tough technique…it wasn’t good technically but good entertainment.”   Nigel gives him a pass for being a popper who’s never done a Tango. 1-888-836-7608. – VIDEO

Ashley and Kupono - Hip Hop by Shane Sparks – “Imma Be” by the Black Eyed Peas” – Ashley plays shadow to Kupono in this routine. While I was watching this I was thinking, “These two are in danger tonight.”   The routine wasn’t hard-hitting enough or synchronized.   Mary says, “It was Ok.   I didn’t hate it and I didn’t love it…it wasn’t memorable to me.”   Lil C says, “Kupono you struggled throught that…it made it hard for Ashley to mirror you….Ashley I wasn’t mad at you at all, you had some nice moments.” Nigel says, “I felt that that stopped just at the point that I started to enjoy it…I was underwhelmed at the end of the day. I didn’t feel the four dancers brought out his best…you didn’t sit comfortably tonight. – 1-888-836-7609. – VIDEO

I love Ade. I think that he is a fantastic dancer and has a nice personality. I agree with Lil C about him being really good competition. I look forward to seeing what else he does in this competition. I thought that he and Melissa did a good job tonight, and I really enjoyed their performance last week.

I also really enjoyed Max’s and Kayla’s performance tonight. I thought that their performance was great and interesting. I thought that they both really bought it in that performance.

  • dhunken

I loved Evan and Randi and think they were judged to harshly compared to the rest of the dancers that followed. Maybe because they were first and the judges are expecting too much from them. MJ what did you think you did not comment on Evan and Randi.

  • unique28v

The top couples tonight for me were Janette and Brandon, Asuka and Vitolio, and and Melissa and Ade.

Everyone else was forgettable. Both hip hop routines were AWLFUL, which I think says more about Shane Sparks choreography than the dancers….

If it was up to me, the bottom 3 couples would be Jeanine and Phillip, Caitlin and Jason, and Kupono and Ashley.

For the boys I would send Jason home, and either Ashley or Jeanine for the girls.

  • fwtx

The show tonight was one of worst in the history of SYTYCD.

  • anovich

So not a fan of the show tonight – really disappointing after last week and the phenomenal show it was.

My one comment that I just have to make is about Karla and Jonathan. Nigel called them the underdogs which made me smile because they danced to “Falling Slowly” a song brought back to the mainstream by the ultimate AI underdog, Kris Allen. How interesting and fitting would it be if this song became a benefit to underdogs on both these shows.

  • KrazeeK120

I can only get through about 1/2 of the time voting. The other 1/2 I get a network error!! Argh!!!!!

  • unique28v

I agree that the show tonight wasn’t very good. Hopefully the dance styles and choreography picks up next week.

  • DCH4444

The show was a huge letdown after last week.
I had high expectations for each of the Top 18, and only 3 couples reached them.
Asuka and Vitolio & Karla and Jonathan & Randi and Evan.

  • dhunken

I agree with you DCH444 my top three tonight were Karla and Jonathan, Randi and Evan, Asuka and Vitolio. Melissa and Ade were good and the rest were fair to not so good. Janette and Brandon were great at the lifts but I thought the dancing in between was way to sloppy or overdone. Not sharp enough. Just my opinion. I love Brandon as a dancer and think that Mia is way to critical of him but tonight he tried to hard and it showed almost desperate. I think the dumb judges who criticized him last week when he did not deserve it is getting to him. I agree with everyone tonight all around was not as good as last week.

  • danceinsidex3

Jeanine reminds me of Emmanuelle Vaugier for some reason.

Shane was kind of a disappointment. I’ve enjoyed a lot of his work in the past, but I didn’t like either of his routines this week (or last week for that matter). I don’t know if it’s him or the dancers or a combination of the two but I was underwhelmed.

I think the bottom 3 couples should probably be Ashley and Kupono, Caitlin and Jason and Jeanine and Phillip. I kind of having a feeling that Randi and Evan will end up in the bottom 3. That scares me, because I love Evan. I’m seriously worried about him this week.

  • sunchick

BFree was the best part about tonight. What was he wearing? :laugh_tb: His choreo was FIERCE, as usual. And those costumes. I love him, the end. Yay, he’s back! Kayla and Maks did an admirable job, especially Max. Kevin Spacey indeed. I think Kayla’s awesome, but I’m already sick of the gushing.

I didn’t love the Sonya piece like I ususally love Sonya pieces, but I think that’s because Ade and Melissa were brilliant technically, especially Ade, but they didn’t quite get the attitude and vibe. They simply did not inhabit Sonya’s choreo with the transformative, authentic quality that her stuff requires. It was missing the Sonya-ness. Too bad. Still really like Ade though. Lil C sure has a favorite, doesn’t he? Mmmm hmmm.

The Stacey Tookey piece was allll Karla and Stacey’s gorg chroreo. I did not get the Jonathan praise. A wise person pointed out that he was basically a pretty prop. ANd I’m not impressed that he’s better being a prop in this piece than his sad attempt at hip action in his speciality. Karla, though, was totally brilliant.

Evan was better than they let on, but I also think he was helped beause he sold the spirit of the jive and it played really well on TV. It *was* super fun. Hope they’re safe.

The disco….eh. I don’t get disco, though, on a good day. Without the overload of crazy crazy lifts and tricks that Doriana usually throws in, it was boring.

Sniff, Kupono and Ashley, Jason and Caitlin. I don’t think it was horrible, but yeah, not a wow moment for either of them. Kupono, sadly, is no Mark when it comes to hip hop, but he was better than Tony last week who is actually a hip hop dancer. Hope K&A advance because the Wade piece from last week is still the best thing I’ve seen all season so far, but I’m not holding mah breath. Shane was off his game. Was not thrilled with his choreo for either couple, but they didn’t elevate it, either. I think either Jason or Kupono will be gone tomorrow, and I believe the judges prefer Jason. *is sad*

For my money, anyone but Max and Kayla could be B3 and I wouldn’t be outraged.

  • Grammie Kari

Hip Hop is probably my least favorite dance style tonight. I was not impressed.

I love seeing Louis Van Amstel working with the couples. Nice that Nigel acknowledged ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ I hope we’ll be able to see Dmitry and Pasha on the show.

I loved the high energy of Randi and Evan and Janette and Brandon. Why would such a difficult fast Disco routine be presented so early in the season? Melissa and Ade remain a favorite of mine!

I agree…the bottom 3 couples (for me) were Jeanine and Phillip, Caitlin and Jason, and Kupono and Ashley.

Is it just me, but does Jonathon remind anyone of a younger Jason Castro? He doesn’t have Jason’s charisma, but there’s something about him. Kind of adorable.

  • butte009

I agree it wasn’t as good a show as last week but does anyone really think that last week’s routines were randomly picked?

    My favorite performances tonight
    Karla/Jonathan – wow… just fabulous…,
    Ade/Melissa – awesome jazz,
Asuka/Vitolio – one of the most gut-wrenching waltzes I’ve seen in a long time,
Brandon/Janette – holy sheet that was one fast Disco! there was no way to get something like that cleaned up in such a short time, what was Doriana thinking?!

    My so-so performances
Kayla/Max – I don’t see what’s so fabulous about her yet and he’s definitely not Artem, Dmitry, or Pasha,
Ashley/Kupono – I didn’t think this hip hop was as bad as the judges made it out to be, I liked Kupono
Randi/Evan – jive didn’t seem so much “fun” to me, cute couple though.

My “Oh Oh this will get you in the bottom” performances
    Caitlin/Jason – I don’t think it was a problem with Shane’s chore. They didn’t perform it.
Jeanine/Phillip – Gotta be real. I love Phillip though.

It’ll be interesting to see who America puts in the bottom. I’m not vested enough in anyone to pick up the phone.

  • Alencar9

He is my favorite, but if Kupono lands in bottom 3 I think he is a goner. The judges have already called him out about being too effeminate when he dances. The first chance they have to get rid of the gay(ish) guy they will hop on it.

  • Miss Chaos

I saw the Jason Castro in Johathan too, put dreadlocks on him and vola, Jason! And theirs was my favorite dance too.

  • sunchick

I agree it wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t as good a show as last week but does anyone really think that last weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s routines were randomly picked?

It hasn’t been random since season 1.

  • SpenserJ

For me tonight, Melissa & Ade and Janette & Brandon were the stand-outs. I thought they were fabulous.

I like Randi & Evan a lot too. But, while I thought she was great in the Jive, he was just passable. That style of dancing is just really not his thing. He moves so smoothly, it was probably impossible for him to hit those kicks hard. Hopefully, they can get past this little bump and do a great dance next week.

  • butte009

I agree it wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t as good a show as last week but does anyone really think that last weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s routines were randomly picked?

It hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been random since season 1.

Right.. which is why I don’t understand why people were disappointed in tonight’s show. It’s the luck of the draw. Most dancers have to move out of their comfort zone.

  • stelladallas

Evan and Randi are the best couple overall. They have the personality, technique, and chemistry that most of the couples haven’t shown yet.

My favorite choreography of the night was Stacey Tookey’s “Falling Slowly” for Jonathan and Karla…and I usually don’t like contemporary.

All the love and goodwill for everyone from the judges last week came to a screeching halt tonight. ( And just wait until Mia judges…yikes!) Favoritism on this show has historically existed, and it is going to become more apparent over the next several weeks. Last season, Joshua could do no wrong because they wanted a hip hop guy to win, and the season before Nigel made it clear he wanted a girl winner, hence Sabrina’s eventual win. She was a fantastic dancer, but I don’t think she would have been “America’s Favorite Dancer” without all the support from Nigel.

  • LisaE

Overall, the performances last week were so much better, but this week I was really able to figure out my favorites.

Ade is awesome! But Kayla and Max may be my Katee and Joshua this year. They’ve got chemistry and that intangible something. I look forward to seeing what they do each week.

  • Sunshinegirl

I thought that tonight was still pretty good, even if not the near perfection that was last week. I’m guessing that they had more time to rehearse the first week perhaps. But the two that absolutely gave me chills tonight were:
    1. Falling Slowly – Jonathan and Karla
    and
    2. Dreams Are More Precious – Vitolio and Asuka

Breathtaking and GORGEOUS! I now really “get” the song Falling Slowly and appreciate Kris’s interpretation and choice of singing it even more than ever before. He really did the original justice!

The Tango and the last Hip Hop were a hot mess! And everyone was else was good or at least decent. I did like the Jive that Randi and Evan did as well as the Pop Jazz routine that Kayla and Max did…those was pretty sweet!

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

The first 4 routines were damn hot tonight. Then I was kinda “ehh”

  • golcook

First… I cannot believe this post has 21 comments and the Jeff-prostitute post has 245, hilarious!!!

Second, I think last show was overall better, but tonight had many stand-out performances, My favourites were:

    >>Janette and Brandon, I love love this couple, they have so much chemisrty and she is so gracious and he so strong, I think they’re here to stay.

    >>Randi and Evan, I saw and feel how much fun they were having, good performance.

    >>Melissa and Ade, another great chemistry couple, I loved the choreography and execution, awesome performance.

    >>Karla and Jonathan, great connection, they really surprised me. Stacy is brilliant at contemporary, she was in SYTYCD Candada and choreographed the dance for Allie and Nico with the song Permanent by David Cook, it was phenomenal.

    >>Kayla and… who?, kayla is just awesome, sorry to soy it but she overpowers Max so much, you can tell in the critics like “kayla you were brilliant!!! and… oh max… you were fine”.

Vitolio and Asuka were good, lots of feelings but I didn’t like the dance so much.

My B3: Jeanine an Phillip (My early favorites, no!!), Ashley and Kupono and Catlin and Jason. Going home… Ashley and Kupono.

  • reeboks1

i love this show more than AI but i was definitely bored tonight. i was already bummed that paris and tony are gone, and then nothing really caught my attention tonight! i think it had more to do with choreography than with dancers though. oh well.

  • May

Not as good as last week but my four favorite performances were:
    Melissa and Ade: Very cool.
Vitolio and Asuka: That was beautiful. No other words.
    Karla and Jonathan: Great chemistry.
Kayla and Max: Kayla is amazing. I had to watch it three times.

I also liked Brandon and Janette’s disco but not as much as their foxtrot last week

  • fres2027

I must say that I am a huge Kayla fan.
Her movements are so clean and sharp and pure, I am sorry for some of the people here that can’t see that. I really liked the peace she danced, the music was great and the coreog. was exiting…
I think we have a winner here :)

  • sillypraguer

So I actually like most of the performances. I didn’t expect to based on the comments :) Enjoying seeing some variety in the choreographers, Stacey Tookey was great. Brian Freidman, you make me laugh in a good way. A gal on X Factor said that he changes clothes something like 5 times a day. Lol. His piece was excellent.

  • geekygirl

I am easy to please, I didn’t think anyone was terrible, I just love this show!

Well, I don’t know who to pick. One thing I will say is there is all the hype about Kayla, and she is a brilliant dance but I don’t even remember her in that routine because I couldn’t take my eyes off Max. He’s better than they give him credit for.

  • Dr. Tracey

Last week was a hard act to follow but I thought most couples did well with the routines they had.
Randy and Evan – ‘fun’, their personalities will carry them when their dancing doesn’t.
Melissa and Ade – I like him but don’t think she’s all that special.
Caitlin and Jason – I didn’t think it was that bad, I liked him but she was better last week.
Janette and Brandon – Crazy good and i’m really happy Lil C gave Brandon the kudo’s he earned.
Osuka and Vitolio – I just didn’t get any of it, not the story, not the passion so according to Nigel i’m heartless…..whatev.
Kayla and Max – I am SO glad Brian Friedman is back! Best performance of the night.
Johnathan and Karla – Really liked this, think i’m gonna like Stacey Tookie routines.
Philip and Janine – Thought Janine was better than Philip, I hope he can do better with other styles but I think his huge fan base will carry him through this week.
Ashley and Pono – I’m with Mary, it was just meh for me.
Shane Sparkes was a disappointment this week, I always like him better as a choreographer than a judge but those routines were lack luster.

  • http://archulove.wordpress.com vickyvicks0

    JONATHAN…OMG!
I agree with everything that the judges said!
    it was beautiful.. gosh!

  • movin2thabeet

I think the main fault with both of Shane Spark’s pieces lies at his feet, especially with the second number, Imma Be. I loved the concept and elements of the dance, with the whole shadow concept. But the second part was just too much of a disconnected mess. All that time spending taking off the jackets and rolling on the floor, for what? To end in an abrupt, unsatisfying manner. That wasn’t the dancers fault. All this concentration on the choreographers, leaves the problem of living or dying by it, and in Spark’s case, it was the latter, leaving the entire show feeling weaker for it.

I thought Ashley and Kupono did a decent job with the dance they were given. Could they have been better? Sure. But the choreography put a spotlight on any weaknesses they did have while other dances, like Asuka and Vitolio’s waltz did the opposite. As long as A&V emoted and kept their lines, it was all beautiful. They didn’t necessarily execute better though. In fact, I don’t think Vitolio, Evan, Jason or Max truly hit their dance any more than Kupono did. All these guys, in my opinion, were just ok last night.

  • flaminghead

I am really annoyed by so many little things with the show this week. In total agreement with the comments about the hip hop from Shane Sparks this week… 1) That was NOT good choreography, too abrupt and not very exciting at all to watch, as opposed to the fine history this show has of great hip hop routines. What happened Shane? Even you look bored with yourself??
    2) These couples tried their damnedest, but you could see how they were TRYING, and that is just no good… They definately did try to put their own thing into it, it’s just that they had nowhere to go!
As for Randi & Evan’s Jive, i thought it was SO MUCH FUN!! Adorable, effortless, and what was the word again?… oh yeah, FUN.
Asuko & Violio had beautiful lines and it was sad, and it gave me chills… but holy crap, could Asuko be any less emotive? Can she be any more of a wet blanket? Not attracted to that beautiful sculpted man, eh? Well it shows sister, and the sad thing is, you give him NOTHING to go off of. A poor connection and a hinderance to them both.
I thought the routine for Max & Kayla was cute and somewhat entertaining, but i don’t know why they she is so good… i don’t think she is any better than any other girl on that stage really.
Best routine of the night for me, and i can’t even believe i am saying this because i don’t like the genre or the dancers per se, but it was Brandon & Janette’s Disco… of all things. It was so smooth so fast so fantastic… and that hot damn eagle split above his head!!!!! smokin’.

  • s0x_prisoner

Wooo Karla and Jonathan were incredible!

  • lilbrusc102

Loved Ade & Melissa, Brandon & Janette Liked Vitolio &Asuka, Karla & Jonathan, Randi & Evan, Max & Kayla. I usually adore Shane Sparks, but something was off about his numbers last night, so for me the bottom three couples would be the 2 hip-hop numbers and the tango, which is sad since Phillip and Kupono are my favorites (along with Ade/Melissa….)

  • Grammie Kari

I saw the Jason Castro in Johathan too, put dreadlocks on him and vola, Jason! And theirs was my favorite dance too.

Thanks for your response, Miss Chaos. This almost makes me like Johnathan even more. I was surprised he is 21. He looks about 18 years old.

I enjoyed the show because of the outstanding performances by several couples, but the Hip Hop dances left me feeling a void.

I hope we’ll see another Disco routine with a less hectic pace. I love the dance and the music. Well, I danced to it a long, long time ago…

  • Qcloud9

I loved Karla & Jonathan!! First time I ever thought about buying a SYTYCD performance on iTunes! Love the song too.

  • hcpoirot

The reason last week was better than this week:

    1. Majority of the dancers got their own style. Like Max got latin, Jonathan got latin, Phillip and Tony got rap etc etc.

    2. Most of choreographers give out their best routines.

This week almost all dancers got different routine from their style. Lost of lame choreos.

And yes Napoleon and Tabitha out choreo Shane Sparks. (GASPPPP)
