Smash: Katharine McPhee Covers “Redneck Woman” (VIDEO)

On next week’s Smash, Karen (Katharine McPhee) travels back to Iowa to attend a baby shower where she performs karaoke at a bar to Gretchen Wilson’s country hit “Redneck Woman.”

Watch it below. What do you think of Katharine singing country? Maybe she should stick to the cabaret and Broadway?

Smash airs on NBC Mondays at 10 pm.

“Maybe she should stick to the cabaret and Broadway?”

Definitely. A nice performance, but not very authentic.

Country is also pretty far removed from broadway … perhaps Smash is casting their net too wide with song selection? (Something idol was never able to do, I might add)

She said “Get out here YOU GUYS!”

I love that Smash is allowing Katharine to sing alot of songs!  The girl can sing!!!!!!!!   She goes back to Iowa for a friend’s baby shower at a karaoke bar!
Thank God this show is not ALL Broadway!   :))))

As she sings, “people may look down on me, but I don’t give a rip!”

I love to hear Kat sing, but I absolutely detest this particular song.

This could be great for the show. Showing where she came from, because it’s something famous people usually talk about, how they struggled leaving their home and making it but it’s not a story that we are used to actually seeing.

Broadway encompasses all types of music, including country! Ever seen Big River, Big Fish, or Million Dollar Quartet?

I think this program is on it’s way out unfortunately.

I love it !!   I am officially on the Smash and Kat McPhee bandwagon.

She may be singing with an exaggerated twang but you can’t take the Sherman Oaks out of the girl. Do people in Iowa have a twang?

Loved it and the show!  Hope the show continues.  So much bettere then all these canned laughter, non-funny sitcoms.  Saw her mom om idol.  Still don’t like that woman lol.

Kat did a great cover! That was fun! I really LOVE the show. It has so much potential, so hopefully the people who are enjoying it stick with it.
It´s getting pretty interesting as the episodes go by. Can´t wait to see what happens between Karen and Derek. I ship them so hard, even though he slept with Ivy. Will see what happens.

So is Smash going to be one of those shows, like Glee, where we read/hear every performance that is going to take place weeks before it happens?  That’s a real turn-off to me for some reason.  It really takes the fun and mystery out of watching.

Nobody is forced to read spoilers.

    Amazing!!!

It’s true that I didn’t have to open this article, but I read/hear info about Glee everywhere, without any effort on my part.  I heard them talking about the Ricky Martin episode on the radio weeks before it aired.  I see headlines on EW.com weekly, and I don’t even have to open the article to read exactly what’s coming up in the coming episodes.  I don’t even watch Glee but I feel like I do!  That whole Modern Family article about the “f-bomb” episode came out a few weeks before the episode aired as well.  I just think it takes away a lot of the fun of watching if we always know exactly what is coming up.

Is that so? I’m not interested in Glee or Smash and so I don’t even read the blurbs here and I haven’t the finest idea what’s going on in those even though I’m on this blog every day. Perfectly doable.

Keep doing what you’re doing Katharine, keeps the naysayers busy and the positive remarks coming, but in the end you will be the star who is destined to be where you were meant to be…. Love to see a different side to Kat and this song she showed that…. Love her….

The show reeks of CA-NY snobbishness. This doesn’t help.

So you didn’t read the Smash article that you’re here commenting on?  You just came here to tell me to ignore spoilers?

  • Moria Polonius

Actually, I didn’t. I saw your comment in the side panel on the main page and yes, I just came here to say that not reading spoilers is really simple.

Smash rated higher than Glee did this week. And most TV critics just LOVE SMASH!

this scene looks so fun! katharine keeps impressing me more and more as this show goes on, and after being a fan for 6 years now, thats ridiculous that she STILL impresses me. She can sing everything. Cant wait for this weeks ep!

Sometimes anticipation can be even stronger than the experience itself… Therefore it can be interesting when performances are spoiled in advance.  And even though we know about every performance, it is not always clear what the context is of the performance… e.g. for Glee’s most recent episode… we knew that Amber Riley’s character is going to sing ” I will always love you”  and therefore we look forward to it, but it was not revealed to which male character she was going to sing it… Therefore the interesting anticipation and speculations long before the episode starts…

I finally watched SMASH Episode 2.  Shows how wrapped up I am in this show.  I really liked it, except for the ridiculous adoption.  Such stupidly written filler could derail the whole show.  I hope not.  The other subplot, the divorce, is a bit of a stretch, but it doesn’t bother me.
