I agree, MJ.  Ruben sounds the best that I’ve heard him on these songs.  He has an amazing voice and singing style.

Pure old school R&B. Love it!

lol, i can’t stop laughing at the album cover. from afar, it looks like a mugshot. i was curious, click the thread. rotflmao, it look more like a head shot of a man in a coffin. is he serious? he’s cracking me up.

Hmm.  I will listen when I get home, too.  Go Ruben!

Considering that Ruben is dead to most Idol fans, I suppose the assessment is a fair one.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, cause we know how faithful idol fans are.  Maybe it’s time to look to new fans.

I suppose so.  Didn’t mean to come off so snippy.  But last I checked, no one is put into a coffin facing sideways!  *chuckles*

He sounds great, I’ll be buying this :)

He’s not dead to me. After Taylor Hicks, Ruben is my favorite winner/contestant in all 10 years. He’s up there with the best singers from the show, IMO. I don’t base my opinions, listening or buying habits on record sales – ever. Never have. In fact, most of the music I buy is not what’s selling. I find the top of the pop chart staples as some of the most banal and uninteresting – and manufactured.

    Talent is never irrelevant.

Yep, but then I wasn’t the one who ran with the whole dead thing. I too didn’t mean to come off snippy.  I love Ruben, I’ve spent more money on him than on any other idol.  Cds, concerts, etc.  It’s been money well spent.  I think he has the best R&B voice to ever appear on Idol, quite possible the best voice period, imho.  He can sing anything, from opera, to standards.  Jazz to Hip hop inflected pop.  He’s far more talented than the bubble gives him credit for.  So no coffin for him, but just following the chain of the conversation.  Instead of just calling it silly outright.  LOL!

sorry, i was just commenting on the photography, no more, no less. don’t wish anybody dead nor their career. i take back my ‘man on a coffin’ statement. that was silly &  insensitive.

I’m digging it too.  I have to say, he’s the first person on Idol I ever voted for.  Not because I watched his season, but because I tuned into the finale because it was so hyped.  I really didn’t watch Idol seriously until season 4.

Gotta say… not sure if it’s deliberate, but when I read “Letters from Birmingham” I can’t help but think  “Letters from the Birmingham Jail.”

If i see him playing here anytime soon, I am so there.

PJ, it was deliberate.  He says he was inspired by MLK’s Letters.

You must see him in concert.  He’s awesome.

Ruben will be performing in the 25th anniversary gala concert for the David Foster Foundation in May in Victoria, Canada.

No hard feelings.  I like Ruben, too.  Wish he got more credit.  :-)

Thanks for posting this MJ! Wow…there are some great songs here. It makes me long for a great R&B singer on Idol again. The truth is…there hasn’t been anyone with the smoothness, swag, and confidence needed to sell a good R&B song since Ruben. Aaron Marcellous showed promise is Hollywood but only ended up bringing just the voice to the Top24, no star power….so sad…he has an awesome voice.

    Anyway….Good Luck Ruben!
