Queen Extravaganza Cast To Appear on American Idol April 25 and 26?

In the same report that broke the Queen/Adam Lambert news this morning, it was mentioned that Queen members, Roger Taylor and Brian May are currently busy getting the new tribute road show, “The Queen Extravaganza,” ready for its May 26 opening in Quebec.

Part of the preparation will be a two-night “introduction” of the cast on the April 25-26 episodes of “American Idol.”, according to the report.

Could the theme for that week be the songs of Queen? Idol did a Queen theme back in Season 5. Queen songs have been a staple of Idol contestant performances over the years. Queen appeared on the Season 8 finale to perform with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

They also had Queen/Lady Gaga theme on XF UK last year. And  Queen theme during season 6 with Brian and Roger mentoring.

I hope it’s true because a queen week would be great!

The more I think about it, the more worried about this theme I’m getting. It’s the spending the two nights “introducing the cast” that kind troubles me. Might they make the Idols perform with this cast? Will the best/well-known Queen songs be reserved for the cast?  Will they have to perform two Queen songs? Queen songs are not easy to perform (to say the least) and finding two you can do credibly well may be difficult for some of these contestants.

Why is Idol signing up for this? This is clearly designed to move Queen Extravaganza tickets which might be a tough sell. Who wants to pay top dollar for a tribute band when you can find one at the local bar for the price of cover? Best to build up some buzz. And there was some sort of competition to pick the tribute members? Was it on a show or something?

I did find this video of one of the guys who was selected as a vocalist (which went viral and he was later featured on Ellen, so obviously, I wasn’t paying enough attention):

They had a Queen night on Canadian Idol with the idols performing on the stage of the musical Queen was promoting at the time, I could see something similar happening and of course a result show performance with the cast and Brian May/Roger Taylor perfoming (similar to Spiderman cast + Bono/The Edge last year).

    Nvm, I get it!

so then that would be top 5, unless they make up for the Jermaine/Shannon double elimination, then top 6. Seems like it’d be an odd addition to a Wednesday performance show if the theme wasn’t Queen.

I love me some Queen, but dear God I don’t want any of these people singing them. Maybe Elise, but watch she’ll be the one eliminated before it happens. >.< (I'm biting my tongue for even suggesting she places 7th) This is an automatic hot mess for Hollie and Joshua. And I struggle to see Skylar or Jessica finding appropriate songs either. Only one person can sing "Somebody to Love". And I don't need Colton turning Queen emo, and I'm not here for Phillip turning them hipster either.

No. Just no. Just. Say. No. Nigel.

Queen is gross to me, so I am not looking forward to this at all. I’m praying there was some kind of mix up in the article, or they will have a general rock theme instead of a Queen theme.

  • Valentin432

I think Joshua, Jessica, Hollie and Skylar could sing Who Wants to Live Forever/Show Must Go On/Somebody To Love/We Are The Champions.
Elise and Colton should have no trouble finding something but I have my doubts about P².

Well Brian and Roger just aren’t run of the mill Queen fill in band members, right?

Brian and Roger aren’t part of the Queen Extravaganza performances, though. It’s just the tribute band they cast. Brian and Roger were judges in the competition to cast the band members and Taylor is the producer/musical director, but that is it.

While I like Queen, this seems a bit much to me.

  • too-cool-for-school

What do they need a “tribute roadshow” for? I feel really bad saying this, but this is why I wish bands like Queen would just dissipate already. Without all of the original members, it isn’t the same. Making it worse is when they force themselves on everyone with these types of things. Money-making schemes. I can see why people would want to see Adam with them, but a tribute show sounds like a real snooze to me.

Idol promoting it a bigger snooze, honestly. As far as Nigel is involved, it’s these darn two hour episodes! They refuse to let contestants do full songs or more duets, performances, etc. so we get stuck with extra filler. And a Queen theme would just not work with this group. :(

I agree with gangreen about just having a rock theme for that week.  I certainly hope that’s the direction they are going in and not just Queen songs specifically because I too question the ability of in this remaining group being able to pull it off making it looking believable to the viewers.  Yep, there might indeed be some problems for P2 where that is concerned.

I can’t figure out why anyone would be interested in seeing any kind of tribute band.  Why watch a bunch of people who aren’t the real band members sing the songs?  I don’t care if it’s produced by Brian and Roger or not – it makes no sense to me and doesn’t interest me in the least.  This is only my opinion, but I feel like Brian and Roger are making a mockery of what was once a legendary band with this.  It’s starting to feel like it’s all about making money for those two, rather than paying tribute to Queen.  Like they are trying to cash in on any remaining interest in the band that there is.

I’d prefer a general rock theme over a Queen theme.

    Just like I’d prefer a general R&B theme over a Stevie/Whitney theme.  And a 70′s, 80′s, or 90′s theme over a Billie Joel theme.

    Not going to happen. :(

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

It sounds like the contestants are going to get lost in a two day commercial to promote a Queen tribute band, and looking at its website, this isn’t even an arena show, but a small theater/club show. So, huge national, TV promo in comparison to the actual “extravaganza.”

  • Anonymous

There are two Temptations bands, even though there’s only one surviving member.  Those bands make a lot of money.  For them and Queen, they can make more money playing 40 to 60 year old songs than they could if they produced new music.

Just look at how much money the Back Street Boys/ N’sync tour made, almost a sellout every night, and then look at how the album that they released last year bombed.

  • mmb

how is the Queen Extravaganza all that different from many of the jukebox musicals that have been extremely popular on Broadway??  Although I guess there is already a Queen one of those on the West End.  Some people like tribute bands.  People like these songs.  They want to hear them live.  I prefer seeing Billy Joel live at MSG, but lots of people enjoyed his Movin Out musical.  I don’t think its a mockery.  I think it is just another way to have their music played live.  I don’t understand the mentality of “only the original band members should play songs live”…i actually think that it is a testament to the strength of Queen’s musical catalog that it can spawn a west end musical, a touring tribute show, as well as Brian and Roger’s own concerts as Queen.  I view this less as a cashing in (although, heck, why shouldn’t they cash in) as a way to keep their music alive and create a musical legacy during their lifetime.

  • Anonymous

Do any of these tribute bands you are talking about have any of the original members in them though?  I don’t really like any tribute bands at all usually, but at least if they have some of the original members it’s better than this Queen Extravaganza which features none of the original members.

  • Anonymous

How about waiting until an actual theme is announced? What ever the theme, the contestants will have to find a way to make it work for them. Idol can be like a boot camp to get them ready for the real world of music.

  • Kylee

Maybe the theme has nothing to do with Queen, there have been themes that had nothing to do with an artist’s premiere. Like last week with JLO and 80s week. Or Season 9 with Lady Gaga’s Alejandro premiere having nothing to do with Frank Sinatra.

How did they do with the Queen theme in Season 5? I can’t remember that far. It could be interesting though, some interesting performances happened during Bon Jovi week, especially with Melinda.

  • Anonymous

Colton , I am telling you now, go for a lesser known Queen song such as  ”Heaven for Everyone”, “Made in Heaven”, “The Miracle”, “Jesus” but really  ”My Life Has Been Saved” to play to your base :)

If lesser known songs are unavailable, ‘Under Pressure” or “Who Wants to Live Forever”.

  • Anonymous

I suppose it’s just a matter of preference, but I looked up the ticket prices for this show and they are not cheap.  I, for one, would never want to pay that kind of money to go see a bunch of people pretending to be Queen.  Brian and Roger still touring as Queen is a completely different thing than this tribute show which features none of the original band members.  I’m sure there are people who would enjoy it, but it baffles me why. I wouldn’t want to pay that much to see a Billy Joel tribute show either. Or Beatles. Or anyone.

  • too-cool-for-school

“How did they do with the Queen theme in Season 5?”

It was a very unremarkable night, in my opinion. They all picked the big hits and ended up being extra karaoke with them. Chris Daughtry was my favorite that week, but he was the only one that did an obscure song of theirs. The title of it escapes me.

By and large it wasn’t a great theme. Just my two cents.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

Aren’t we all watching a show that has unknowns singing other artists songs every week, and don’t quite a few of us go see them do the same thing on tour in the summer?

Not sure that we’re in the best position to throw stones at tribute bands LOL.

With Idol we usually watch the show all season or hit the tour because we get invested in the contestants themselves, although them singing proven hit songs is also  a nice bonus if they pick ones we like. But with tribute bands, I think it’s more a matter of people loving the music so much that while I’m sure they’d rather see the real band it’s still fun to just enjoy the music itself.

how is the Queen Extravaganza all that different from many of the jukebox musicals that have been extremely popular on Broadway??

QUEEN already has a jukebox musical , “We Will Rock You” which has played in London’s West End (their equal to Broadway) for 10 years. It has a thin plot and uses the band’s songs as a musical would.  ”Queen Extravaganza” employes singers who are putting on a QUEEN concert.

  • Anonymous

Ehh I’m not too sure about a Queen week. Didn’t really like the what the singers did to Queen back in season 5. Anyone remember Kellie doing Bohemian Rhapsode? Or Ace with We Will Rock You? YIKES. Maybe Rock week even though it’s been done almost every year.

  • Anonymous

Well that’s completely different to me because when I am watching Idol, I am thinking of the performers in terms of what original music they themselves will be putting out in the future.  I wouldn’t want to watch any of them do cover songs forever either.  And I do get invested in them as individuals.

The fact that this Extravaganza is going to be on Idol, although I find it to be completely uninteresting, isn’t really what baffles me.  It’s the people that will be paying $30, $40 and $60 to see this show when it’s on the road. But like I said, to each their own.

  • too-cool-for-school

Yeah, it wasn’t pretty, IMO. Thinking of this group doing Queen is equally painful for me. It wouldn’t be good. I just know it.

Plus, oh, oops!!! The one person with killer falsetto that could maybe do a Queen song well left last week. *sigh*

Elliott was the best that night, and he landed in the B3.  Both Kellie and Ace were awful.
My guess is that Skylar, Hollie, Colton, and Phillip will have the toughest time.  The first three because they have “thin” vocals and aren’t spot-on with their pitch.  Phillip because he has no range – how the heck do you do a Queen song without range?

  • seashellz51

Many bands have tribute bands. Queen isnt the first. Several years ago I attended a Beatles tribute band concert and it was fantastic. (if you are a Beatles fan) There is a reason for them and a market for them.
Queen has a huge catalogue of music. It may very well turn out to be a general “Rock Week” also. Which is no different that the other over-used themes AI has been employing for the last 10 seasons.

  • Nele621

There are a bazillion cover bands and some tribute bands. I just saw a Beatles tribute band. I think most of these tribute bands are on their own. I think Queen’s tribute band will be quite a bit better than the standard ones. Martel sounds so much like Freddie, and I’m sure the musicians are top notch. The music will be good, and it should be entertaining. Not quite the same as seeing Brian and Roger, but it still could be fun. I personally would rather see Brian and Roger and some frontman, but I can’t knock this tribute band since I’ve never heard or seen them. They might be pretty impressive.

Chris did Innuendo, it was good

  • too-cool-for-school

Thanks! That was the one! I thought it was a cool performance. :)

Tribute bands are just that a “tribute” (something that you do, say, or build to show that you respect and admire someone or something).  They have been around as long as “original” bands have a body of work or a style that appeals to people.  Tribute bands “usually never” have original band members and are almost always billed as a tribute band whether they have a distinct name of their own or not.  They may just play for the local crowd or they may play in entertainment meccas like Las Vegas, New York or LA.  Many times these bands are endorsed by the originals and often are used to play the original music for things such as TV shows.  Do a search for your favorite band as: Pink Floyd Tribute band, and you will probably find dozens of bands in all areas of the world that make a living playing songs from their heroes.  These are what keep most rock music alive and well and what brings in succeeding generations into the fold.  I’ve been in out of the way towns half way across the globe and been entertained on a Saturday night at the local club by a bunch of non-english speaking kids who bill themselves as Beatles Too or The Greek Rolling Stones.

Maybe they’ll bring in a “tribute Idol.”

  • Axxxel

As Adam Lambert will perform with Queen in 4 events (2 in England, 2 in Russia)… does this mean that he will also perform on 25 or 26th April  to create more buzz for these 4 events ?

Agree, better Rock week than Queen week.. Or a Queen/Bon Jovi theme week.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

I’m pretty bleah on this idea. I was never a Queen fan to begin with. They’re fun once in a while, I suppose. But the idea of 2 nights to introduce their Queen Extravaganza tribute show on AI? I hope the Idols get good seats in the audience.

  • Axxxel

I smell duets of the Idol hopefuls with the Extravaganza team

  • judes

I love Queen but I would prefer a general Rock Week Theme. Michael Johns did a great job of We Will Rock You/ We Are the Champions in Season 7
[ plus a great short version of Bohemian Rhapsody in Hollywood Week] but not all Idols voices could cope. I love Queen’s songs so I don’t mind having the tribute band as long as they do the songs justice.I loved the musical We Will Rock you as the cast was fabulous -so it really does rely on good performances- which is why I hope they stick with a general theme for the idols.

Doesn’t matter if they have a rock week or a Queen week, it will be the same thing: Joshua will take a rock song to church, Jessica and Hollie will find a way to transform rock songs into a big boring powerhouse ballad, P2 will transform the song into the same song he has been playing over the 3 last months, Colton will “emolyze” it, adding whines and saying that Born To be Wild or Fat Bottomed Girls is his worship song, Skylar will countrify it (she can countrify Iron Maiden) and maybe Elise will do something good. Being said that, I’d rather know these kids are singing a generic overused rock song than butchering any Queen’s material, but the results would be the same.

Well i will pay to see QE with Marc Martel for sure , love him . ;) and Idol themes are always a way to promote something so not news there , many good songs to pick for the contestants.

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

I don’t think so. Drawing attention to Queen+Adam would dilute the product which is Queen Extravaganza.

  • koshka

Have you heard Marc sing any of Queen’s more rock songs? The only ones I’ve been able to find on YT are “Somebody to Love” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”.  It would be interesting to see if he can handle songs that require the ‘performance’ aspect as well.

No way Adam will be here, they want to promote the tribute cast in the US, not the 4 gigs in Europe.

  • http://aquayers.blogspot.com aquayers

I don’t want Queen’s theme. It would be trainwreck karaoke. Unless, the contestants pick more obscure songs from Queen, which I doubt that.

  • Axxxel

Just wondering because 26 April was one of the dates mentioned by one poster on one of the threads in this blog that did not feature an Idol alumni yet. And it is exactly one week after Kris Allen (winner Season 8) appears on American Idol (AI) . Adam Lambert will perform on AI but no idea when. But  you may be right.

But if the original members of Queen are coming, then Adam Lambert has to come… at least to sit in the audience. Public relations… Public relations…

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

It’s pretty much trainwreck karaoke every week and that’s what people like, why would a Queen week be any worse than any other. And I’m speaking as a Queen fan. I wouldn’t mind hearing if Jessica/Hollie can pull off Who Wants To Live Forever.

Actually I think just the opposite is true, that Adam in the audience would just muddy the waters with what they’re trying to promote with this appearance, the tribute band tour. I would not expect him to be there at all.

  • http://aquayers.blogspot.com aquayers

Because Queen songs already been done so many times. I don’t want to hear another We Are The Champion or We Will Rock You ever. Unless they want to sing the less known Queen songs, then that’s fine with me. I don’t remember any Idol alumni in the past who knocked Queen song out of the park with their performance. CMIIW.
