American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips, is getting closer to finishing his debut album. He tweeted today that he’s got “4 more songs to sing.” When a fan tweeted back, asking when the album would be released, Phil answered, “by the end of November most likely!”

At one point, Phillip was telling reporters and fans that his album would be delayed until 2013 to give him time to work on it and make it right. But, like Crystal Bowersox and Taylor Hicks before him, Phillip changed his tune. I can only speculate, but I suspect his record label, Universal, had other ideas!

Nevertheless, it’s good for the Idols to capitalize on their success while it’s still fresh in the minds of viewers.  If Phillip can get the album out before Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving is a huge shopping day in the US) that would be a very good thing.

Just wondering what you consider his “two best performances”?

  • littleapple

PP had several best performances which didn`t follow original version last season. And everytime PP performs his own verson of Home, it`s sales  always suddenly surges on iTunes. Yes, PP said Home
isn`t his music style, but doesn`t mean he has no credit for Home. In fact his tone perfectly fits Home.
Just like someone loves playing basketball than football, doesn`t mean he can`t play football well.

Is Macklemore independent?  My daughter has seen him countless times in concert.  He does lots of festivals, is from Seattle, and I think big with high school and college age kids.  I guess that is the network/market indie artists can become very successful in.
For an artist with mainstream goals, a  typical voice, or a lack of  creativity trying out for Idol with a shot at a major label contract seems like the best route to go. In philip’s case,  I think he could have gone indie and been successful.

The song writers submitted the song to AI in hopes of it getting recorded.  They have always been very good about thanking Phillip for his contributions.  Phillip has never claim to write the song.

Happy to hear that Phil’s album will be released sooner rather than later!  Can’t wait!!!

Not Wonderstruck, but IMO, Phillip’s two best performances were Damien Rice’s “Volcano” and “Home”.

Also come to find out – “What Not To Sing” is in partial agreement with me. They record that across the Idolsphere, people liked “Volcano” and the Usher song the best of anything Phillip did – scoring both at 80 – with “Home” as his second highest score, 74.

Now he has access to writers, a producer(s), all the studio toys and session musicians one could want, so I think there will be some solid arrangements on the album as well. There’s no reason not to. Whether the fans like them will remain to be seen.

    JMO.

“What good is taking your time to write almost the whole album and
take your time if no one hears said album?”

    Creative fulfillment. Self-respect.

The album is a calling card.

    ———————————————-

When OK! asked if there were any Idols he would like to collaborate with,
Phillip confessed, “Probably Casey Abrams or Haley Reinhart – maybe
sing a duet with her or something.”

Why Haley? Well, as he explains, “[her] voice is a little jazz, very
smooth, [and has a] sexy kind of feel.”

Yes Macklemore is independent in the sense that he has eschewed signing with a label. But he is not an “indie” artist – he’s a rapper. Your daughter is lucky she has seen him a lot- he built his fanbase on college campuses and in the Northwest, but he did a sold out NA and European tour this last year. And now that his new album is projected to debut at #2 on the billboard charts this week, he appears to be blowing up into the big time.

He was the main draw at a campus event  for my daughters university this spring.  And shows up often at events around Seattle.  Hardworking I think.

Can’t a rapper be indie?  This is a term I often use incorrectly.  I use it as someone on an independent label but is it properly used as a genre of music?
    Thanks for the info roarpen.

It sounds like your daughter must attend a Pacific NW University as did my son. And they love them some Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. #prideofseattle
There is a sold out show at WAMU tonight kicking off the world tour – that’s 7500 seats. Go Ben Haggerty! (his real name)

This slow audience build of loyal fans is what the Idols don’t get. They have a fickle TV audience as their base. We have been talking about the 2nd album drop in sales for Idols. IMHO they need to keep touring and not spend so much time making that second album. It is not so much that the album takes so long to come out – it is that they are out of circulation for so long. It takes lots of time in front of fans to build your fan base. In order to do that, they need to keep touring.
