Nigel Lythgoe Twitter Party Details! Favorite Idols, “Where Are They Now” and More

American Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe, held a twitter party during the Charlotte auditions tonight. It was a pretty long one! He answered a lot of questions. There was no big news to come out of the discussion, but there were a few notable tidbits:   Click to read the entire twitter discussion.

  • Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sancez and Colton Dixon will return to Idol to perform.
  • He liked the suggestion of using Phillip’s new single, “Gone Gone Gone” as the boot song. (I bet this happens).
  • One judge breaks ties in each audition city.
  • Idols Nigel namechecked as some of his favorites: Jessica Sanchez, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert
  • When Nigel was asked if there would be a reunion show, he said there will be a “Where are They Now” segment with ex-contestants on the results show!
  • Very strong female talent this year, says Nigel.
  • Kellie Pickler has the most winning personality, says Nigel.
  • Nigel would love: Jlo, GaGa, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake on the panel, if he could have anybody.
  • He would love to have Bruce Springsteen for rock, Al Green for xoul and Garth Brooks for country, Barbra Streisand for ballads  as mentors.
  • “Personally, I’d like some R&B” is how Nigel answered a question about the type of singer he is looking for this season.
  • Nigel’s favorite seasons are 4 and 11.
  • Ruben Studdard is his favorite Idol
  • Nigel feels Long Beach and San Antonia had the best talent this season

  • fantoo1

I like the “Where are they now” idea.

Nigel might want an R&B winner this season, but Idol voting demographics will be stacked against him/her. I don’t think Mariah and Nicki will influence the voting demographics THAT much to get a different kind of winner.

  • b_james

Gaga, Katy, and Justin really would be great judges.

I wish that former idols would come back and mentor the contestants more often…

  • Ratchet13

I think Nigel is going to have a hard time trying to get more music celebs on this show. The play up on the Nicki/Mariah feud is going to keep a lot of people at bay. I’m sure the legends feel like the producers are playing Mariah (that bacon montage knowing Mariah’s weight issues wasn’t cool). And, the younger artists probably don’t like the blow back they’ve seen directed at Nicki. This feud and all it’s bad publicity will definitely keep other celebs away

  • maymay

Give us Justin Timberlake next season.

  • blackberryharvest

    I doubt that.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick ??

YAYY FOR AN R&B IDOL! I’m for that, I’m for pop too. Anything but Country or Rock! Make it happen Nigel, we know you can lol.

  • Axxxel

Looking at the TV audience,,,, I don’t think it is going to happen but R&B runner up that will shine until the end of the finals ? Why not ?

  • tomr

    Sooooooo agree about Kellie’s personality!

  • Anny_nanny

Idols Nigel namechecked as some of his favorites: Jessica Sanchez, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert

Back in the spring here Nigel confessed that his favorite Joshua.

  • Jaejae1

He can take Randy’s place. :)

  • KelseyW

Weren’t they supposed to have a special 10th anniversary segment/show last year? I’ll believe the “Where Are They Now?” thing is legit when I see it. :P

It’s still a great idea of course, and one I’d love to see happen. Even though it reminded me of the “Where Are The Now?” specials TV Guide did(along with their plentiful and fan gratifying supply of Idol coverage in general)that doesn’t exist anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Back in the spring here Nigel confessed that his favorite Joshua.

They were probably the only names he could remember at that moment.

  • http://twitter.com/happylittlefish Amy Beth

The mentors wouldn’t need to interact with the judges. They would work with Jimmy Iovine (he’s back, right?) and their segments would be filmed, not live.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

The mentor has to be an INterscope artists….is Streisand on Interscope?  Hey Nigel, when you cast for the FAME show, hire Jennifer Hudson!

Nigel wasn’t being asked about his favorite Idols; he was asked who he felt was the best Idol singer. And if they were “probably the only names he could remember at that moment,” it strikes me as a nice compliment to those artists.

  • YankeeFan08

I really like the idea of a “Where Are They Now” segment.

I still stand by my comment. Heh!

  • Jordana33

Justin Timberlake would make an awesome judge, but I doubt it would happen, because he’s focussing on the “acting thing”! Actually, a panel with Keith Urban, Justin Timberlake and Nicki Minaj would be my idea of a dream panel.

  • MV007

I have to be honest, the idea of Philip’s new single being the swan song makes me think that Philip either has pictures of someone doing something unseemly or he’s providing sexual favors in exchange for promotion.  The guy is simply getting every break possible.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I remember Nigel mentioning Ruben and Kellie as favorites.  I also remember something about Brooke White and how she would lead the group in prayer before each show.

I thought something was said about using one of Colton’s songs as a “goodbye” song.  Must be losing my memory!

  • girlygirltoo

I don’t see Gone Gone Gone as being a great fit for the boot song unless they tweak the lyrics. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they use it, given P2 is (rightfully) the golden boy of the moment for Idol.

Nigel also responded to someone who tweeted  she’d like to see Kris perform on Idol this season by saying he’d like that too. But I’m not holding my breath — I think many of his responses on this twitter thing are designed to just placate the fans of particular ex-Idol(s).

So I’m gonna take a whole “wait and see” attitude about what Nigel said here.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QXISMF77FUTM37Y5Z2CGBNSBQU Aaron

That’s because they were overpimping him back then.

  • Montavilla

I love the “Where Are They Now” segment.  I hope they focus on the alumni who don’t make headlines.  Like Anoop Desai or Elliot Yamin or Brooke White.  Or even people like Sarah Sellers, who didn’t make it through Hollywood, but made an impression during auditions.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QXISMF77FUTM37Y5Z2CGBNSBQU Aaron

Phillip has grown on me a lot after the season ended, but the way he responded when he was asked if he was gonna watch this season came off a bit rude and douchey.

  • blackberryharvest

Yeah I agree. Here is his answer:

    Q. Will you watch season 12 of American Idol, which starts Jan. 16?

    A. Probably not. The show’s just very pop and I’m just kind of not.
And everything just happened in a strange way. I’m thankful for it but
I’m probably not going to watch it this year.

Most of the winners aren’t “pop” but they still watch.

  • standtotheright

And I thought the PR lessons had finally taken.

The answer, P2 is this:  “I would love to, but I’m going to be so busy promoting my single and preparing for my opening slot with MB20 that I’m not going to be able to keep up regularly. I wish them all the best.”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/HWRPW434YQTROZ3J5E4BSLWEYM H.A.

Nigel would love: Jlo, GaGa, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake on the panel, if he could have anybody.

This would have been an amazing panel.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I would hope so, but I think that would be the point of a “Where Are They Now” segment.  To focus on the idols who aren’t household names, but who are all still working in music and successful in their own smaller ways.  Since Idol clearly wants to brand themselves as the only US reality singing show with successful alums, they’re not going to touch the non-success stories or bitter ex-Idols with a 10 ft. pole.  So I could seem focusing on the Brooke White & Jason Castro types.  The Elliot Yamin & Melinda Doolittle types.  Though now that Nigel put this out there they better follow through with it.  It’s a good way for some of the mid-tier idols who are not likely to score performance slots to get a little promo and air time.

  • Liteasy

I don’t think Phillip ever watched Idol before he won.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I have grown to like P2 well enough as well and I don’t think he meant anything by his comments really, but does he realize that many in his own season weren’t actually pop?  They might not have been in the same genre as him, but I’m not sure how many of those folks I’d exactly call pop.

Even if P2 never watched Idol before his season, I think there is a nicer way to say what he was trying to say. Especially since he likely knows several of the people that tried out for this season, make it to Hollywood and etc.

I’d wondered. I don’t feel comfortable holding newbie Idols responsible for thinking about the whole music industry in every statement… but it seems reasonable that P2 might have been aware of the people actually performing and living side-by-side with him.

Apparently not. Fortunately, P2’s brand rests on a sort of happy-go-lucky cluelessness, in which he just stumbled into the Idol studio one day, played whatever was in his heart, and these strange people gave him prizes for no reason that was ever adequately explained to him. Otherwise, he’d have to absorb the PR lessons.

  • Incipit

…it seems reasonable that P2 might have been aware of the people actually performing and living side-by-side with him. Apparently not.

It does ‘seem’ reasonable. I will conclude that we are expecting a minimal degree of awareness that just doesn’t exist. IMO, It’s the self-involved state of mind that leads to sound bites like that one, where a listener/reader face palms on a regular basis. (Between Phillip and Colton, practically every time they open their mouths.)

Phillip already changed the answer on if he’ll watch idol. The last interview I saw, he answered yes, I’m going to try to….lol

In the video i watched, he said he’ll watch

But they won’t.  They’ll focus on all the “stars” they made or people they’ve tried to manipulate the public into believing are “stars”.   They won’t focus on those who   are earning good livings because of the show unless they are the chosen ones.  I think someone brought up Jason Castro.  He is doing very well…but I’d eat my hat if they focused on him.  Or Michael Johns or anyone else who are making decent livings because of that show.

Absolutely agree.  Joshua Ledet was awesome.  Yet he came in 3rd (I think).

    here.

Agree. I’m not holding my breath either but then again, I don’t care if he’s on Idol.  What good is it if they don’t introduce him or talk with him after he’s done singing?  I’d much rather see him on a show that will treat him with dignity, like Fallon or Leno or Ellen or even Kimmel.

  • Karen C

I think if this is to happen, it will have to be someone that really creates a buzz in order to pull in new viewers, and be such a gamechanger that a portion of the current demographic will want to vote for them.

LOL, I was the one that asked him that question too.

  • Karen C

I had asked them about doing a reunion series, and someone else did too, which prompted the answer about the Where are they Now.  I think it’s a good idea, but hope it focuses on more than the ones that are the most famous. Maybe do one season a week and say what happened to the top 10 and other memorable contestants.
I think if they did a reunion show, though, like as a summer series it would do very well. Like focus on a different season every week, and have the top 10  come back, and have them perform.

  • iani

makes me think that Philip either has pictures of someone doing
something unseemly or he’s providing sexual favors in exchange for

Lol, it is indeed a big surprise for many, including me, a good thing coming after another for P2 and going on, it’s like he would have a magic sack with good luck inside and he’s getting out portion of it when he needs.

I don’t see Gone Gone Gone as being a great fit for the boot song unless

And that would be an happy exit song for the elimination-montages while live on stage many would have maybe misty/teary eyes, “Gone Gone Gone” quickly, it sounds like a “shoo-shoo” song.

Phillip has grown on me a lot after the season ended, but the way he
responded when he was asked if he was gonna watch this season came off a
    bit rude and douchey.

And that reminds me why I didn’t have any viewer-contender connection with P2  last year on the show, amongst other things, his way to speak/articulate the thoughts lacks a lot. Smart, talented guy, but sometimes his mouth speaks first ahead he to think, it reminds me of the spoiled, privileged, smart guys who care for themselves  because they can. Well, over the years I’ve known and like artists like P2, I’ve learned that for me music should come first for my sanity, lol.

  • DragonFly

“Lol, it is indeed a big surprise for many, including me, a good thing coming after another for P2 and going on, it’s like he would have a magic sack with good luck inside and he’s getting out portion of it when he needs.”

Myself, following nothing of him except reading about the success which is “Home”–even that above scenario doesn’t fit.  It’s obvious he hasn’t had to lift one finger to “reach” in any sack w/good luck inside–don’t think even he’s had time to fully comprehend this whirlwind.  He doesn’t come across as  pompous.  His comment re. being busy to watch Idol may be legit w/the realm of all that unmistakably “lucky luck” of an uncontrollable hit.  Ironically he seems laid back enough to look at this all as “work” that needs to happen in follow up to BAM–Success!

    this whirlwind.

The “good luck” and having  “sack of good luck” don’t necessarily come because you work constantly hard for it, heck it is seen every day around with multiple examples. I’m personally thinking of the luck of having a guy like Jimmi, in connection with the reception of the AI in the last years as one of “worst reality show”, the WGWG meme, the attention he got with Home on the perfect time when folk music has gotten more attention, otherwise it would have been left in the same condition as the mediocre song of some UK guys(? not sure here), to enumerate some fortunate situations from his sack, other than the “guy is talented, leave him alone he’s too busy”.

He doesn’t come across as  pompous.  His comment re. being busy to watch

So were the other winners same time around their years: busy, tired, on the rode, laid back and maybe more respectful with the answers show/competitors related from some expected questions with the AI new season . But he seems to be in the category I know from some words(maybe it is said abroad also)- ” where is too  much intelligence, the stupidity might be in equal amount”. His answer(I can’t find it exactly now) as something like “I’m too Alt to be Pop and watch” is pretty a “laid back” one.

  • DragonFly

    Liked your intelligent/stupidity quote.

Re. Phillip:  Just wondering if maybe he’s being misread.  Seems like there’s a debate what exactly his statements are saying about him.  Could it maybe be overwhelming or….

The 1st part is saying that “””WOW”””” KIND OF LUCK doesn’t seem to even REQUIRE him/anyone to reach in a bag of magic (lol)—it’s that good!  Wouldn’t all Idols want for that situation!
