Things that make you go Hmmm…. It was recently reported that Hip-hop/R&B artist, Nicki Minaj, is a front runner for a seat on the American Idol judges panel.

Wouldn’t you know that she just postponed her fall tour, hinting to her followers that she’s got a “secret” that will make them “spazz” when it is revealed.

What could that secret possibly be? Travelling the country with Idol to audition hopefuls maybe?

With Scotty, he wasn’t even considered a “WGWG” until he won-Paul was
the original WGWG of the season who people were so sure would win.

I am going to guess none of the people who thought Paul would win looked at DialIdol or read the crowd reports from outlets like Entertainment Weekly. Because it was pretty obvious Scotty was the heavy frontrunner and would win in a walk, by Top 11 at the most, but probably sooner, like Top 13 (and Iovine was not happy about it at first!). I think Scotty was considered a WGWG as soon as he played a guitar on the show. I don’t remember if that was after Paul left or not. Anyway, he’s just the country variation of the WGWG phenomenon. It does break up the monotony somewhat. But not enough for those who would like a woman, a non-white male or even a non-guitar playing white male to have a chance at winning this thing again.

It does the show no good if only white males have a shot at winning this show.

And it does the contestants themselves no good.  I don’t think that they’re all remotely alike, in the same way that one wouldn’t put their closest recording analogs together on an iTunes playlist, but as long as it (not unreasonably) appears that white males have an advantage, that’s all that people talk about. Not whether or not they won the sales races in their seasons (some did, some didn’t). Not whether or not they seem to write better with different respective writers and producers (they do). It just comes down to census ticky boxes. And even the ones I don’t care for deserve better than that.

    DialIdol

People still pay attention to that? Wasn’t Pia green when she was eliminated? I also remember Danny, Adam, Crystal, Melinda, and David A being consistently at the top for most of their seasons.

read the crowd reports from outlets like Entertainment Weekly

Adam Lambert, David Archuleta, Colton Dixon, and Bo Bice were idol dome crowd favorites, and they didn’t win.

We will just have to agree to disagree, but even with the press getting involved, its still mostly an idol bubble issue. The casual viewers wouldn’t be able to tell you what a “WGWG” is. My mom and dad were shocked that the last female winner was Jordin Sparks-they didn’t think it had been that long(they are casual watchers).

If its just 3000 people who notice that whole WGWG thing(which is probably actually less than that number tbh), then that really isn’t that much when you look at the big picture. Most people don’t take the show that seriously and just move on, like I said. Most viewers don’t say “I’m tired of males winning, so I’m not watching anymore!” Not at all. Only a tiny fraction of viewers really care about the WGWG thing. And I mean a TINY fraction.

It’s no longer an Idol bubble complaint. Once P2 won, the media on it was loud and negative. People outside the bubble finally took notice and it wasn’t pretty. And quite a few people began mocking the show because of it.

I didn’t think it was that bad in the media. Maybe a few mentions in Idol related media, but  that pretty much stopped when Home started to sell so well.   And mostly pointing out that there are differences between the winners.

I think the show had its credibility ruined when the same type and gender won the show year after year.   Remember Season 5 was the most popular season with Taylor, Katharine, and Elliott getting more votes than Chris.

Then we had Season 7 which had one of the best casts to appear on the show, IMO.  Season 8 had one of the most talented contestants to ever appear on the show (Adam Lambert).

I may not like the choice of Nicki as a judge, but that won’t stop me from watching my favorite show!

I may not like the choice of Nicki as a judge, but that won’t stop me from watching my favorite show!

I most likely won’t either, especially if there are contestants I like.  And that’s why I’m watching, because of the contestants.

So, it’s Monday,  I wonder what time the next rumored judge will be announced :)

Actually, the last mention of it was in a Jordin Sparks Q&A in Parade a week or two ago. Parade is included with Sunday newspapers all across the country, so “the last female winner saying she wants to see girls win again” is the sort of thing that people might notice. Home selling well got a nice writeup in EW, but that has a circulation of under 2 million to Parade’s 70 million.

Like I said, as a fan of some (but not all) of the last few winners, I think there is an incentive for those fans to make sure that there is an obviously different type of winner, or their accomplishments will continue to be downplayed after the show, and they’ll continue to struggle at radio no matter how well their songs are doing in sales. How does that benefit anyone?

Check out her twitter (@NICKIMINAJ) before she goes on a deleting spree; she’s having a meltdown.  I’m sure she’ll be perfect for AI, LOL.

I actually agree with this. But I don’t think this should be manipulated.

But I don’t think this should be manipulated.

It depends on what the definition of manipulation is. The casting of every season involves some manipulation. There is nothing preventing the producers from casting non-white males as the rock-leaning contestants. There is nothing preventing the producers from changing the voting system to eliminate power voting (in fact, I’d say that would actually allow for less manipulation than current practice). There is nothing preventing the judges from giving the “artistry” edit to contestants of all genres and performance styles (again, I’d say that would be less manipulative than what we’ve seen in the past).

I’m not saying that they need to force an outcome.  But the choices made by the production team in the last few seasons also abetted certain results, and different choices might actually make for a more level playing field for everyone.
