Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Nov 21-27

The Christmas Freeze is starting to grip radio, reducing spincreases and stalling ranking changes all over the place. Already, it has managed to strangle AC and CAC is suffering. Only one non-Christmas song on AC has a bullet and that song only has a bullet of 6. So, we have just one Idol/Voice/AGT related milestone this week.

James Durbin, who finished fourth on the most recent season of Idol, had one of his lead off singles debut on the Active Rock chart. It’s not often that we see Idols make it onto this chart (all three Rock formats tend to give Idols the cold shoulder) and most of the acts that chart there are bands, so it makes it all that more impressive that “Stand Up” achieved top 50 in one of the Rock formats.

Since the milestone pickings are slim this week, I’ll also mention that Glee vaulted two Christmas songs into the top 50 on AC (“Extraordinary Merry Christmas” and “Merry Christmas Darling” – the former is an original Glee song and the latter is a cover of a Carpenter song)

Christmas songs have harsh recurrency rules. Songs go recurrent after a year, so we sometimes see songs chart at the beginning of the Christmas radio season, only to have them suddenly disappear. They are hitting their one year anniversary. That is what happened this week to Katharine McPhee’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. \

Meanwhile, Scotty’s TTWG returns to the top 30 on Country.
