When was the last week that Kelly didn’t achieve a radio milestone? Well, it’s been a while and she continues her streak this week. Milestones this week from Seasons 1, 3, 5 and 10.

First up, is Kelly Clarkson of course. Her second single from her fifth album (both titled “Stronger”) achieved top 5 in HAC and top 10 in Pop. The song is top 25 in 3 formats and she as 4 entries in the top 10 across Pop, HAC and AC. “Stronger” goes for adds this week on AC, but that didn’t stop the song from already charting top 30 in that format.

Next up is James Durbin with his first single in the top 40 of HAC. James released two debut singles from his album. “Love Me Bad” is the HAC single.

Also achieving top 40 this week is Jennifer Hudson over on Urban. Her “Think Like a Man” went for adds last week on that format and features Ne-You and Rick Ross.

Finally, we have Elliott Yamin. This third place finisher from season 5 has released a new single and hit has achieved top 50 on AC. The song is called “3 Words” and it is the lead single off of his third studio album.

How long has LMB been out?  It seems like it is starting to get some traction.

  • Anonymous

Hmmm…that’s a good question.  I think maybe mid-November – before the album came out Thanksgiving week.

  • tomr

    No Kellie :(

  • Anonymous

LMB has sort of crept up on the HAC chart. It’ll be interesting to see if it gets any adds today. It can’t go much further without new stations play it.

    Finally Go James

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

I’m going to try and highlight as many of last night’s performers as I can with today’s i-tunes and HDD updates. With last night’s spotlight at the Grammys being on Whitney, I’ll do the same again as I did yesterday with the i-tunes update today for the last time.

  • GS61

James, get your butt to a few more radio stations!
Let’s see how high this can go.

He toured radio all January. It looks like it paid off.

Thanks Pan, I just checked All Access and noted that Love Me Bad moved up to #36 on HAC.

  • LVD

It seems like Cumulus are allowing their auto adds on the country addboard this week.

  • Alexia Katrantzis

It was officially released Nov 22nd. Looks like the recent radio tour is paying off. I hope it continues to climb for the remainder of this month so that Wind-up will finally release something else next month. And I think it’s time for a new rock single, now that Football Season is over Stand Up has lost all its appeal.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

It seems that if James is going to play something on American Idol, it’s gonna be LMB….

  • GS61

Hopefully by then he’ll have a new single to promote.
    We’ll see.

  • Alexia Katrantzis

That’s looking like the most likely scenario at this point but I really hope by the time that happens he’ll have a new single out. I’m so over that song and I bet he is too.

  • Anonymous

For people like James and even Adam, they have to personally sell themselves by going to radio stations.   Adam starts visiting east coast stations today so hopefully we will see some movement on his single.    I am glad to see LMB move up the charts.   Unless you are an idol called Kelly, it is a slow climb up the charts.

Wouldn’t that be a total of 4 songs so far released off this album which hasn’t even sold 100K copies to date?  That seems like a big investment in something that doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere.

Also why do they need to release a different song on different formats.  Isn’t there one song that can be played on both?

I think they should stick with LMB. Lauching singles is very expensive for an indie label.

Can someone explain to me what these figures from Idol Chatter are?  For example, Adam is #25 – last week #29?  And James #45 – last week #48?  On what charts?  I’m sorry I can never seem to keep this stuff straight!

  • Anonymous

The Idol Chatter chart is just something put together to compare airplay by only artists who’ve been on Idol. The numbers don’t really mean much. They just give you a general idea of whether songs are gaining or losing spins. For example being 4 on the list doesn’t actually mean ythe song is charting #4 on any Billboard or Mediabase chart.

  • Alexia Katrantzis

I would personally prefer it if Wind-up would concentrate exclusively on only one format before trying to crack others, starting with rock radio.

Off the top of my head I can think of one song on MOABD that is suitable for rock and pop radio – Deeper. Back For More can also make it on both formats but it’s not on the CD so it won’t generate as many album sales.

  • Anonymous

Oh…thank you for explaining that to me!  That seems like a waste of time for Idol Chatter though.  What difference does it make how they are doing compared to other Idols?  I’m only interested in how they are doing out in the music world.

  • Alexia Katrantzis

Well Kelly has a decade of hits behind her so it’s not surprising. James is a new artist and Adam needs to prove that he’s not a one hit wonder.

  • Anonymous

The only songs released from Memories of a Beautiful Disaster are LMB and Stand UP. Stand UP was released without radio support, sort of as an afterthought since it was being promoted by the NFL.

  • GS61

Standup and LMB are the only singles released off the album. What other two songs are you referring to?
Windup promoted LMB, but the NFL was behind most of Standup’s promo.

As for one song for both Rock and HAC, that’s really hard, they’re very different formats. I’d personally like to see Higher Than Heaven or Outcast as the next single. Neither is suited for HAC.

  • Tess

Idol Chatter is part of the bubble and in the bubble competition amongst Idols has and is still very important….song play helps to keep the competition aspect of American Idol alive and well.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

I don’t have time to do the complete rundown of adds so far but So far TTWG 2 auto adds from Cumulus stations.

    Addboard

  • Alexia Katrantzis

I would be happy with that scenario too. TBH at this point anything will do, EVERY other song on MOABD (except maybe Screaming) is better than both LMB and Stand Up.

  • rihannsu

Sigh, contrary to what the Idol bubble wants to believe Adam has already proved he is not a one hit wonder.  IIHY went top 20 on Pop radio and #30 on the Hot 100 which constitutes a “hit” even if not a huge one.  However I do agree he is not at the level where radio will automatically play his songs.

  • Trina

And yet even with LMB moving up the chart, the song isnt selling, because its mediocre at best. Performing that on Idol=fail.

The chances of Wind-up releasing another “one HAC, one rock” single is slim. If they release another single it will be for one format. As noted above, theyre an indie label, and major labels dont even continue socking money into multiple singles unless they see money is being made. IMO the only reason why they did it this time was because with the NFL tie-in they figured SU would get some free publicity.

  • Anonymous

Glad to see that some Cumulus stations have auto added TTWG. But does that mean they’ll play it more than once or twice a week–on the weekly countdown show or stuck in the wee hours of the morning? Oh well, I guess you can’t have everything…just happy it got added!

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

BITM’s got a good bullet on HAC ahead of the video starting on VH1 and a round of radio promo.  I think that song will be fine on that format. :)

Didn’t see LMB coming! Let’s see if they can get that to go any higher.

Good for Kelly – song and album still hanging in there through what is sure to be the Grammy & Whitney onslaught on ITunes. Yay Civil Wars getting a boost even though they didn’t do a whole song!

  • Anonymous

Idol Chatter compares all Idols which could be considered a waste of time. Top 40/Mainstream music will always get more spins & be higher on that chart because according to Mediabase it has about double the spins as the 2nd best spun genre chart.

Here’s the numbers in terms of Mediabase. The #1 song in top 40/mainstream had 13,700 spins last week. In comparison, for last week in spins, the #1 song in top 40/rhythmic had 5,200 spins. The #1 song in the country genre had about 6,400. The #1 song in urban had 3,700 spins last week. The #1 song in rock had 2,000 spins last week.

So an Idol that even has a top 20 hit on Top 40/Mainstream will always be at the top of Idol Chatter charts because of the amount of spins in that genre. An Idol who stays in the country genre & doesn’t crossover like Kellie Pickler or Scotty will usually not be #1 on Idol Chatter even if they’re in the Top 5 in country because country still has only half of top 40/mainstream spins.

Billboard article on sales for Whitney:

    http://www.billboard.com/news?utm_source=most_recent#/news/whitney-houston-poised-to-re-enter-billboard-1006171752.story

    Excerpt:

Though Nielsen SoundScan’s sales tracking week ends at the close of
business tonight (Feb. 12), sources suggest that the album could
sell over 50,000 copies in the day-and-a-half after her passing on Feb. 11. That sum would enable the set to re-enter the top 20 of the chart easily — if not the top 10.

Love me bad wad on ryans show at the end of Oct I think

  • Anonymous

Love Me Bad has been out at least since November. It has had a slow climb to reach the Top 40 and I would be surprised if it gets much higher on the chart, although you never know.

Congrats to all the ex-Idols who reached milestones this week!

James certainly knows how to sell himself. That’s a great asset for him because as we’ve seen, Wind Up promo budget is, well, let’s say very limited to be nice. :(

LMB was basically on its way to the morgue just a couple weeks ago. It’s thanks to James charming the pants off of all the local radio PDs he’s visited since January during his extensive radio tour that LMB is back from the dead. I don’t know if this boost is temporary or not, but I’m happy for James that he has the personality it takes to overcome his label’s limitations to a degree.

As for the next single, I hope it happens, and since Wind Up can’t handle 2 singles, I hope they stick to one format this time, rock preferably. Not as lucrative obviously, but that’s the one James wants. Mick Mars hinted that Outcast, the track he played on, might be the next single. I’m fine with that, and the Mick Mars association could give James needed cred for Rock radio.

    HDD Sales Chart

  • Anonymous

Wouldn’t that be a total of 4 songs so far released off this album which hasn’t even sold 100K copies to date?  That seems like a big investment in something that doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere.

Also why do they need to release a different song on different formats.  Isn’t there one song that can be played on both?

Stand Up was being played in some football stadiums, so I’m sure that the thought process was to release the single to rock stations, so that they could take advantage of the cross promotion.  It’s not unusual to release more than one single, especially to when someone’s genre is rock, both Nickelback and Daughtry did it.  But, it’s always been clear that the main song, the one that was getting the bulk of the promotion was LMB.

As far as how many copies those songs have sold, these aren’t pop songs, and neither song has gotten the amount of exposure that’s going to result in them selling a lot of copies.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

Wonder why HDD is coming in at 37%?  It’s definitely hard to extrapolate/interpolate whichever term we decided upon:)…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Actually Lexie, it did come in at 36.20%.  The post is a little further down but Whitney didn’t come in until the 2nd update.  My guess is that the 2nd update is i-tunes but that’s just a guess.

Nice to see Elliott get an add in a decent sized market – Milwaukee.

  • Anonymous

I would personally prefer it if Wind-up would concentrate exclusively on only one format before trying to crack others, starting with rock radio.

The only problem with this is that it’s going to be extremely hard to get rock stations to play a song from anyone who has been on American Idol.  Since Howard Benson was involved in James’ album, it’s a sure bet that the songs were meant to be pushed to HAC and Pop, and not Rock stations.

I think that James’ label and management have the right idea about how to ingratiate him to the rock crowd.  They can’t rely on rock stations, so just continue to send him to rock festivals and promote him to print and media outlets that cover rock acts.  He has to build a solid reputation first, before they are going to give him a shot, and that’s something that will take a while to happen.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, there’s nothing like making the DJs laugh to get on their good side, and James can be really funny at times with his impressions and stuff.  I follow my local radio station on twitter and after they had James in for an interview they tweeted that if you missed the interview you could check it out on their website (as they always do after they interview someone), and I tweeted back thanks, I would check it out because I had missed it.  And they actually tweeted me back again saying they really enjoyed having him there, that the interview was really fun and they were sure I would enjoy it.  It was one of the interviews where he had them all laughing, so it seems like he made a good impression with them.  I’ve tweeted them about other interviews they had with other artists and they never replied to me like that before.

  • OffLeash

Looks like James must’ve made a very good impression for them to reply to you! James is a born entertainer, whether on stage or in interviews, just like he must be a hoot behind closed doors too. I wouldn’t be surprised if his new reputation as a fun guest earns him a SNL spot in the future. :D

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Glad to see that some Cumulus stations have auto added TTWG. But does that mean they’ll play it more than once or twice a week–on the weekly countdown show or stuck in the wee hours of the morning? Oh well, I guess you can’t have everything…just happy it got added!

I doubt that they will increase their spins. For some reason Cumulus just allowed all of their auto adds this week for every artist. Usually they block them.

As for making friends with djs and pds, Scotty wowed two of the haters this past weekend in Seattle..they had been vocal about not liking him, now they both are saying he’s one of their favorite country artists, he was unreal in concert:)))

That is really good to hear! And it was about time.

I think radio promotion can really help some artists a lot. Casey for example has only been doing radio promotion for months now and most of these radio stations plays his song more after the visits, this week alone he will be doing 7 different stations. I think all of this radio promo that has helped Casey to get into the top 30. It is what most new artists do. If you have some good skills live (singing or in Casey’s case guitar playing) and you have an agreeable personality then it can be really be helpful.

Maybe it’s not all that unusual, but  though LMB was available for purchase before the album dropped (Nov 21),  it didn’t “go for adds” until the day after (Nov 22)

Not sure where the stats are coming from, but LMB’s supposed to be #36 HAC now. ?? Can anyone confirm?

The AllAccess report at this moment for HAC is showing LMB at #36 on the rolling report, #38 on the published report. I think that’s where the confusion is lying.

Yeah, I remembered those DJ´s from last year. I had to grind my teeth because they were really provocative to listen to, when talking about Scotty, and they  also gave Hunter H. a hard time . That´s why it came as a pleasant surprise now to see them vocal their mind change and send several tweets with super positive words about Scotty as a person (from the interview) and performer in Tacoma. It´s nice to see them change,  especially when it´ll lead to them playing Scotty´s music a lot more.

Those Kelly adds are significant because kamp rarely plays her stuff. Don’t know her history with xrk. But I think the fact that these 2 added along with kiis indicates that Stronger has a really really great chance of going to #1 on the pop AirPlay chart. Those are the 3 biggest urban leaning chr stations. Can’t remember the last time kamp added an idol ( including Kelly). I think it’s gonna happen. Everyone move outta Kelly’s way!!

I can’t remember the order Kelly’s singles were released, but looking at the mediabase adds board, it looks like this might be the only previous one that got official add from either KAMP or WXRK

    Already Gone (WXRK)

(NOTE: historical adds don’t seem to be available on mediabase for older singles like SYBG or Breakaway)

Meanwhile, MKIA got an official add from a country station in Chicago today. :)

I think Adele is probably helping Kelly because her huge popularity is so much about the great voice. Will Kelly has a great and powerful voice too.  Even better IMO sorry about that.

It’s hard to believe Stronger won’t hit #1 on Pop.

BTIKM does have a bigger audience than the 4 songs ahead of it. The problem for the song is that to reach an audience of 10 Million you need to be around 14 or 15 on the HAC chart. At this rate, the song will take awhile to get there. To get more audience the song has to get more adds on Pop where so far it has yet to hit the top 50. Slow progress wouldn’t be bad but this single is to get folks excited for an album dropping in a month.

  • Anonymous

    What did I do? :)

Stronger will go to #1. BTIKM needs to pick up the pace so that folks are excited for an album dropping in March.

I know less than nothing about this really, but it seems logical that time is not on Adam’s side with album coming out in about a month.  Hurry up little song.  I am sick and tired of giant Idol sophmore slumps.  I have my fingers crossed for a smallish slump.

I think that RCA would be happier if more radio stations were playing BTIKM right now. That’s the bottom line on all these numbers.

I don’t listen to KAMP unless I happen upon it during my channel flipping during commercials while in the car, but that add really surprises me in a good way.    On Friday I just randomly was on their website looking at their playlist and if what they have on there is correct (yes.com hasn’t been working right lately to check), they play an Adele song, usually SFTTR, and a Drake song every.single.hour. with some other songs inbetween.  I wish I was joking but their playlist is really that narrow.

wow, so Kelly should won 7 Grammy next year :))

I’ve lost my 1010 for some odd reason.  I am very hopeful that the video will help a lot.  It seems that people like it because it has over 2,700,000 views.  Then again I have know idea if that is a lot of views either.

I think it would be awesome if she did, and I will hold to my opinion that she is the best female pop singer there is today.  I think Alicia Keys is just fantastic also. What bothers me about Adele’s singing is that she sounds like she is straining her voice.  Her vocal issues attest to this I think.  I know I am out of step with just about everyone on this so will freely admit I am undoubtedly wrong.

All these numbers make me crazy …

I just wanna know one thing from all of you ‘experts’ who know far more than I do …

Are these good numbers for Adam?

He’s doing fine on HAC.  He’s not speeding up the charts, and the adds are slow, but at least they are coming.  I think a lot will depend on what these HAC stations are doing.  If we see them increasing spins, then more stations will add it, and it will look good to the Pop stations.

Toby Knapp was right when he said that PDs would have to figure out where the song fit, and right now, HAC PDs are saying that it’s a HAC song.  That doesn’t mean that it’s going to always be below the top 50 on Pop, it just means that Pop PDs are going to take their time adding it, and that the song will have to show that it has found an audience on HAC before a lot of pop PDs will give it a chance.

Thanks so much for your comprehensive answer … so if I understand you correctly, you’re saying that BTIKM is doing good on HAC but it’s a little behind on CHR because of ‘where the song fits’.  So it has to prove itself on HAC first before it takes off or climbs on CHR.  Do I have this right?

Pretty much.  RCA could also spend a lot of money, and try to get some Pop leaders on board to help them promote the song.  Adam will appear on some huge stations this week, and now we just have to see if they will start playing the song, and if they do, how much will they play it.  With WWFM, RCA worked out a deal where Z100 was playing the song 100 times a week from the start, so maybe they’ll do something like that again.

  • Anonymous

What was the deal that RCA worked out?

  • Anonymous

RCA worked out a deal for Z100 to support the song just like Jive did with Kris Allen and LLWD, and Interscope just did with Madonna’s single.  These deals are nothing new.  In exchange for the support the labels promise that artists, not necessarily the ones whose music is getting the airplay, will do radio station sponsored shows and interviews, or that the stations will get other exclusives, like being the first ones to play a song.

Looking at the HAC media base chart:

    http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insideradio/charts.asp?format=3&showyear=y&dpt=n

I noticed that only 3 of the top 10 songs have positive bullets. So 7 of the top 10 are dropping. It looks to me that there will be quite a bit of shuffling going on soon. (I’m not really a chart watcher so maybe this is a common occurrence but just caught my eye). Also noticed that Madonna’s new song is still sitting under Adam and doesn’t seem to be picking up much steam. If I’m reading the chart right Adam got an additional 120 spins this past week and Madonna only had 84 additional spins in the past 7 days. The Goyte song is really moving up. Also there are only 23 spins between Adam and the next song sitting at #30 and it doesn’t seem to be getting new spins as fast as Adam.

It looks to me that if each station that has been playing his song just gives it one or two more spins a day he could really start to move.

Also for grins I’m looking at the “Add history”  list for BTIKM and sorted the list based on Number of spins last week.

    http://addboard.mediabase.com/SongAddHistory.asp?startdate=&ob=6

Interestingly enough the station that gave the song the most spins is “20 on 20″ a SiriusXM top 40 station (60 spins last week).

The next four stations (in order of spins) are all HAC stations in California (two in San Fransisco, one in Fresno and one in Palm springs) for a total of 138 spins.

Then weirdly at the other end of the chart is a Top40 station in Wilmington, DE that added on 1/3 and hasn’t spun the song once.

Just looking at Top40 spins (not counting the SiriusXM mentioned above) the next top40 stations with the most spins are three stations in PA and one in VT for a total 62 spins.

True, every label makes deals. The more important the artist, the more the artist has to offer the station, the better the deal will be! Those spins from Z100 didn’t just fall from the sky! ;) In other words, you WANT the artist to have enough interest from radio stations to get the best deals.

The more that the artist is in demand, the more they have to offer in a trade-off!

Madonna, Gaga or Katy Perry are the types of artists that get the every hour types of deals.

Does anyone know anything about Rick Salvador Productions?  I guess it is a marketing agent that promotes to radio, contracted by record labels?  Anyway, both Adam Lambert and James Durbin are listed on their list of projects for this week on their website.

BTIKM is doing good on HAC. The bullet is strong and it is getting some big market adds every week. VH1 will start playing the video this weekend which always seems to help Adam’s songs. Adam is also just starting his big promo push on the East Coast this week, including some heavy hitters over the next couple of days!

No one can really predict where a song fits. There are many songs in the top 40 on CHR at this time that don’t sound like “Pop songs”. It really is too early to predict what BTIKM will do on CHR, or overall for that matter. Right now, it is just one giant guessing game and no one knows how it will all end up!

But, like I said before, sometimes the deals don’t have anything to do with the artist whose song is getting played.  Sometimes, a new artist has very little to offer a radio station, so having them play at a concert or give an interview isn’t that big of a deal, and may not result in a lot of support, but labels have plenty of artists, and I’m sure that people like Britney Spears, Gaga, and others have been used to help get new artists airplay.

  • Anonymous

Yes, of course. It is nice when the artist is actually someone that the radio station is excited about using for things like the acoustic shows they film and in turn use on their site. It is probably harder for those unknown artists who are just starting out or artists that have a really low interest level.

I saw where Madonna is in the process of filming the video for her “new song”. I guess we will have to listen to another one of her songs around the clock at some point in the near future.

Wow, you just changed your comment I was replying to.

The BTIKM Video is up on iTunes and is up to #27 already!!

Actually is up to #23 and has to overcome 10(ten) Whitney Houston videos

Does anyone have access to the Billboard Adult pop top #40? I can only get the top #20 – maybe on Pulse?? I have seen several tweets about Love Me Bad debuting on the Billboard Adult pop top #40.

I love both Kelly and Adele, so I’m not going to choose who is the better singer. They are both awesome. For me the difference is that Adele has better material. I would love to hear what Kelly could do with songs of the caliber of some of those on 21.

elliegrll  HAC PDs haven’t had a problem with adding and playing it, even if they haven’t added it in droves.

Well I think your statement that they haven’t added in “droves” is misleading; perhaps I’m reading the media base chart wrong but Adam got a total of 504 spins on 53 different stations.

    http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/insideradio/charts.asp?format=3&showyear=y&dpt=n

The next song above him was only played on 33 stations. You have to go up to the song sitting at #22 before you find a song that’s being played across more stations (#22 was spun on 66 stations). For comparison Adele’s song at #1 was spun on 92 stations.

Adam actually has been added to more stations than the songs on the chart around him. No he doesn’t have the same adds as the songs at the top but he has had quite a few adds.
