The Olympics are over, but they have left their mark on the radio charts. Phil Phillips whose coronation song was selected as the soundtrack for various montages has two milestones. “Home” arrives on the AC chart for the first time and returns to the pop chart. Can this Season 11 winner crack the top 40 on pop this time (the song previously peaked at 43 on Pop in July)?

Season 4 Idol winner, Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” has blown into the top 20 on Country. Carly Rae Jepsen from Canadian Idol went top 20 on HAC with her Owl City co-sing, “Good Time”. Also on HAC, Casey Abrams, who finished sixth on Season 10, went top 50 with “Get Out”. Michael Lynch, 4th Season 9, today has “Today” in the top 40 on AC. Finally, Olly Murs’ “Heart Skips a Beat” achieved top 30 on Pop. The UK XF invasion continues!

GP peaked 28 on one board and 30 on the other.  I think the 28 was MB but I could be wrong. In that ball park anyway just broke t30.

I have a few questions that I’m hoping the numbers gurus in here can help me out with.

Do HDD and Billboard get their album sales numbers from the same source(s)? Along the same lines, is it possible for a retailer to report their numbers only to Billboard?

  • Anonymous

Do HDD and Billboard get their album sales numbers from the same source(s)? Along the same lines, is it possible for a retailer to report their numbers only to Billboard?

HDD has a list of retailers who they survey to come up with their predictions/projections.

Billboard gets the actual numbers from Nielsen Soundscan.

  • Anonymous

My understanding is this: HDD estimates sales. Billboard uses the actual official soundscan data to comprise their charts. HDD covers most retailers but not everything (such as small retailers, small Internet stores, sales at events). Does that answer the question?

What does the negative bullet and negative AI mean for Eighteen Inches?

  • Anonymous

Lauren’s bullet is positive.  It’s 75 today, but it was 78 yesterday, which is what the -3 means.  Don’t worry too much about day to day drops or increases, they don’t mean a lot.

Mumford and Sons new song, which has a similar style to Phillip’s Home, made its debut on the Billboard rock songs chart at #14, and it’s debut on the Alternative songs chart at #12.  It will be nice if someone at UMG can figure out a way to get these formats to give Home and Phillip a chance.

  • http://twitter.com/LaCingara Cingara

Actually, the BB Dance/Club Chart for week of 8/18 that I just saw following your link lists Kelly’s Dark Side at #2, with JLo at #1, and Adam’s NCOE at #10.  Last week I believe Kelly was #1 and Adam was #7.

I was thinking about this earlier today — what happened to Rachel Crow’s single? Was it ever released to iTunes or radio?

  • blackberryharvest

I know her EP was, which contained the song. She isn’t that “huge star” that everybody predicted so far…

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

Phillip has been dethroned from the top of iTunes. Taylor Swift’s new single went on sale tonight and it’s already at #1.

  • rihannsu

elliegrll is posting the report from the billboard article talking about the Dance Club charts that will be for the week of 8/25.  That chart has a reporting period that is shifted from most of the other charts so we often get reports on what those numbers will be so early that it gets mixed up with the sales numbers we are just getting.  Adam was at #14 week of 8/11, #10 week of 8/18 and will be at #7 week of 8/25 when Kelly will be #1.

  • Anonymous

rihannsu and Cingara, Billboard follows the same reporting period as Mediabase, the only difference is that the Billboard charts aren’t published online until Thursday.  On Thursday the link to the chart that Rihannsu just posted will show that Kelly is number one on the dance and club play chart.
Rihannsu is also incorrect in bringing up the right page, this is the page that I posted, http://www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat#/column/chartbeat/chart-highlights-mumford-sons-i-will-wait-1007816352.story

And this is the paragraph that is printed at the top of that page:

Chart Highlights offers a sneak peek at a select group of Billboard charts every Monday. Find out the top songs, Greatest Gainers and debuts on the surveys listed below. All our charts are refreshed on billboard.com every Thursday.

I’m not sure what’s confusing, this isn’t about sales, it’s about the airplay for last week, just like the Mediabase numbers that are posted at the top of this thread is about last week’s airplay.

The preview doesn’t show Adam’s ranking because it is only show significant movement.  If you take the time to read the article, the songs that are listed are the ones that are making their debut in the top 40 on the various charts, songs that are the greatest gainers, and songs that are number one on the various formats.

The week that Billboard publishes the information isn’t the same as the week that the information represents.

  • Mateja Praznik

Wow Taylor Swift is killing it on iTunes, PP @ #2 is selling 30% of what Taylor’s new single is selling.

  • rihannsu

Not to be picky but the dance club chart apparently has a different reporting period because the @idolsnow twitter account posted the #7 position on 8/10, the #10 position was reported on 8/2 and the numer #14 position on 7/26.  I’ve been watching this for a while as I thought the reports were bogus but when the charts did come out from Billboard the positions were correct.  So it looks like the chart actually runs Thurs thru Wed as opposed to the sales charts which are Mon thru Sunday.  The number #7 position will be chart week 8/25 which is sales week ending 8/12 and since the position was reported on 8/10 the chart had to have a different reporting cycle.  You can research back on the @idolsnow twitter and see that the correct numbers have been reported consistently on Thurs or Friday and they are the numbers that will be on the following week Billboard site update.
