Lauren Alaina – The Tonight Show With Jay Leno – VIDEO

Lauren Alaina was the Idol who dropped by to visit Jay Leno on the Tonight Show rather than winner Scotty McCreery. Not sure what’s up with that–as the Idol winner was scheduled to appear today.

She was a delightful guest–her bagging on Piers Morgan after he told her she should have won was hilarious. You see, she was turned down TWICE by America’s Got Talent where Piers presides as judge. Ha. She was a great guest–it just seems like the girl could have used some more vocal rest!

Speaking of Lauren’s vocal troubles–when her voice went out during final rehearsals, she never believed for a minute she would not be competing that night. And as for Haley? Lauren says when producers asked her if she could step in, she said no.

Watch Lauren sit in with Rickey Minor and the Tonight Show band for a few numbers and then join Jay on the coach for a chat that also included a discussion of Big Mac Pizza–Lauren’s favorite!

I wonder if there’s some some sort of Mary-Kate and Ashley-like division of labor going on between Lauren and Scotty because they are both minors? California laws limit the number of hours they are permitted to work a day.

Some of that interview was funny but the girl still makes me cringe at times with her “bubbly” act

  • http://www.lindafoltz.com linda2u

I have been a rabid Haley fan this season, but this interview is HILARIOUS! Lauren had me laughing out loud! I wish this side of her personality had come out more on Idol!

  • brittneybabyy

This interview was hilarious! It’s truly ironic that she tried out for America’s Got Talent twice and Piers just so happened to be on the show with her. She was just a joy to watch. I can’t wait to see more of her media tour! Also, even though her voice was shot to hell, she still sounded good on those songs (or what we heard of them). :)

Well, in her first audition and on the first live shows, I didn’t care for Lauren’s “bubbly act”. I would have called it presumptuous and obnoxious (Ryan is “bubbles”? Uh, just, no.). But here, she is relaxed, naturally funny and charming. Good for her.

  • cnpenguin25

@BM2587 Or perhaps its her personality and not an “act”. Some personalities just clash, that doesnt mean there is anything wrong with her… I love that she is true to herself and isnt changing to be what anyone thinks she should be! <3 her!!!

  • songsungblue

Some of that interview was funny but the girl still makes me cringe at times with her “bubbly” act

    This. Sigh.

I don’t know, YMMV, but there is something so smug about that girl. She’s a terrifying mixture of insecurity and self-adoration. Kellie was charming in her way because she’d seen some dark clouds in her life – mother abandonment, poverty – and it deepened her a little. This girl is the doted upon daughter, and it shows. **shrugs** I’m not hating on her, she’s 16. But ugh. Unpleasant to witness.

  • jack5791

Oh, her “act” because she hasn’t been bubbly, pleasant, and just downright adorable all season. Some people….

Anyway, this was a hilarious interview. I have enjoyed every interview I have read and listened of hers. She is incredibly gracious despite losing, and even though she is so young, her moments that some may call “immature” is refreshing that she isn’t turning into a teenage pageant bot. Like Kellie Pickler, I think Lauren is going to be one to watch out for when she does the interview circuits!

  • iav123

wow first time i like her… is it because its all over?

  • Ratna12

Like Kellie Pickler, I think Lauren is going to be one to watch out for when she does the interview circuits!

THIS. I think she is adorable, and…. only 16.
She is not boring because she is bubbly.
I’m watching her right now on the West Coast and she sounds great even if a little bit hoarse.

  • shuey

OMG this was so good! she ROCKED singing & her interview was perfect! just the right tongue in cheek type of crap said by her! five ***** at F-N 16! Haley Reinnhart fan here btw ! grats to Lauren . i miss rickys band they rock!

  • tomk

As Scotty said today (I believe it was on Access Hollywood): “We don’t read the blogs – because people either love you or hate you.” So, so true – if you don’t like Lauren, you will find any one little thing you can about her and blow it up…while downplaying all of her good qualities. I’ve seen it with all of the contestants – they have actually shown a lot more maturity than the people who comment about them!

  • superfudge

That screen cap of Lauren is incredibly unflattering. It’s an “I ate the cheesecake but I’ll never tell” kinda face.

  • Ratna12

I just finished watching the Tonight Show and Lauren was really funny. And at the end she shaked hands with Pierce “Thank you for denying me 2x.” and when the music started I think she said to Pierce while shaking her head,” I wasn’t ready, I wasn’t ready.”

Great interview. And what good about this is that other talk shows usually look at this and seeing that she was interesting, they will book her too. Great job, Lauren.

  • Parkbench

Hahaha! I’m not a fan of her voice but she seems fun personality wise. If we knew each other I’m sure we would be BFF’s! haha. But I loved the little America’s Got Talent story.

  • BrandoC15

Oh that b**ch Haley, refusing to sing in Laurens place! Ooo, the nerve of that EVIL girl! I hope she flops!!! (Sarcasm)

  • Dlynne

I think she’s adorable. I’m glad she got a sit-down with Jay because she’s got a great personality. The America’s Got Talent story is hilarious.

FWIW, I have an almost 16-year-old girl and Lauren has a lot of poise for someone so young and still seems down to earth. I hope she has a great career.

  • springboard

She so much more confident than she was on the show. A different person and mature for her age.

I understand better why TPTB was desperate to get her to the final, what I don’t understand is why it didn’t come though during 13 live episodes.

  • BM2587

As Scotty said today (I believe it was on Access Hollywood): “We don’t read the blogs – because people either love you or hate you.”

You’re forgetting that Lauren’s first storyline of the season was reading the blogs and feeling sorry for herself because blogs were being mean to her lol

  • luci

What a great interview, Lauren is a delightful young lady, and she sounds amazing for someone who is hoarse. That story about AGT cracked me up.

  • Tess

I adore people who are totally comfortable in front of a camera, who have the ability to think quickly, who are articulate and humorous. Boy does Lauren fit that bill. It is easy to see why, especially when you include her ability to sing, that she charmed the AI judges and will continue to charm talk-show hosts. (She probably impressed Piers enough to get some time on his show at some point).

Lauren has that IT factor, which the AI voters apparently saw. Something you just can’t fake, nor is it a learned skill. I have a feeling that between Lauren and Scotty they will, with their wonderful southern charm, invigorate a media that had grown pretty blase’ after the debacle that was Season 9.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

Damn, she sounds so much better on Leno than she ever did on Idol. Actually, that’s true for all eliminated contestants. It must be the acoustics. I still remember Adam’s performance of “Mad world” on Regis & Kelly …

It has never been enough all year for a lot of Haley’s fans to just say they like Haley. They must piss on everything else. So sad for them- Haley still lost and life moves on.

So let’s see. Lauren giggled and did not blame losing on her voice. What a pretentious little bitch. That act ain’t fooling anybody. WTF?

  • http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~hansenkd/BrahmsGuides MahlerFan

Where’s the hate from Haley fans? I don’t see it anywhere on this thread…

  • Valentin432

Lol, Kelly was absolutely right on, she’s much more Kellie Pickler than either Carrie or Kelly (in a good way)

  • sagi

She just doesn’t come across as someone who does not have confidence in herself as the show tried to convey. In fact she seems overly confident, and now it seems she has been confident enough in herself that she has been trying to put herself in the circuit for some time. I have a 16 year old myself and I could not imagine her being so touchy feely and flirtatious with grown men. I think that is what has bothered me about her all along. Didn’t I hear that Marilyn Monroe was and idol of hers? That could explain it!

  • stellamarris

does a 3rd place finisher get interviews? i havent seen any with haley… and thinking back i wonder whether 3rd place finishers ever appear in the media — with the final rehearsal week before the finale they might be super buzy. might this be the reason even a 4th place finisher usually does better than the 3rd?

  • lili_anne7

I can see Lauren getting booked for a lot of talk shows with that personality of hers. She’s funny.Plus she sounded good even with a hoarse voice.

  • halo9125

This interview made my morning! I swear, if Lauren doesn’t make it in the music industry, she has some sort of career ahead of her in broadcast- she more than held her own with Jay and Piers Morgan. Funny and adorable- not nearly as grating as when she did her “Peaches” schtick with Ryan Seacrest.

Interesting thing I noticed- she does mention she has bad asthma. Finally, an explanation for her poor breath control- hope for her sake they find a way to work around that.

  • LaleyFan

I wish this side of her personality had come out more on Idol!

Initially it was there on Idol until peeps found it annoying and she dialed it back. I think being out of the competition stress is huge relief for her and now she can just relax more and open up.

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

Okay, first of all, I’m a Haley fan, so couch these comments in that light:

    – Lauren is a sweet, beautiful High School sophomore. My daughter is a HS sophomore and I can say that Lauren has poise beyond her years.

    – Lauren did a great job in that interview and is totally charming.

    – I still believe that she should have been eliminated at 4 or 5 (with Jacob out around 8), but I also believe that the top 13 was very talented this year.

    – Lauren will do well in life. She’s a smart girl. Hopefully scary stage mom will be a minimal influence (do you think she scared Jay into that complement?).

    – I thought that Haley showed some class in refusing to sing instead of Lauren. I also would hope that Haley hits the Tonight Show soon.

  • sallysimmons

Lauren is adorable and definitely a star, but I couldn’t make it to the end – three 30 second ads in a 10 minute clip? Talk about overkill.

  • Lucy1234

The third place finisher usually gets the shaft as far as the interview rounds. Haley’s rounds should have been last week/this week but with rehearsals and media hype for the finale they don’t get them. I do remember that Danny got to make a few rounds but nothing like the other contestants, no Ellen, no Regis and Kelly, etc.

It is kind of interesting that Lauren was on the Tonight Show first but it could be what MJ mentioned that they both can only work so many hours a day or maybe Scotty will be on tonight, which probably has higher ratings due to being Friday.

Lauren is absolutely adorable. I got glimpses of her cute personality on the show and along with her strong vocals. is why she was one of my favorites. I really hope things work out for her because I think she has the makings to be a country music star someday.

  • Valentin432

which probably has higher ratings due to being Friday.

Unless the Tonight Show has very different patterns than other tv shows, the friday edition should be the lowest rated program because people go out on fridays.

  • sue

She is so funny. Jay said he was going by elimination order, I think lolz So Scotty should be on next. It’s all good, Scotty needs some rest. He did do the Access Hollywood performance/interview. He looks so much like Billy Bush :). Lauren sounds pretty good in that clip with Rickey Minor’s Band.

There are a couple of things that, as a Haley fan, are kind of upsetting to me, but I certainly don’t blame Lauren for them or “hate” her for them. There are a lot of things about 3rd place that are a real bummer, to say the least. The lack of the media tour is one of them (although, for the life of me, I don’t understand why they can’t do it the same week as the Top 2–why couldn’t Haley still be on Jay?). Even this is not consistent. Elliott, for all the yammering and anti-Kat diatribes his fans went off on, got to be on Leno and Kat did not. Slezak is going to give Haley a tongue-bath interview this week. So there’s that. But it’s not Leno, Ellen, or Regis/Kelly, which really does suck.

But all these things are part and parcel of finishing third, which makes it hard to get too upset. What I still *am* upset about (and I’m sure that I’m going to get some hate for this comment), is that James, as the 4th-place finisher, got the homecoming (I don’t care that only a couple of seconds were aired, the event should not have happened at all). It was a horrible precedent to water down the perk that is most associated with the Top 3 by letting James have it. To see Haley still live with all the sucky things associated with third place (none of which is worse than the lack of media appearances that ALL the other finalists got), just makes the James thing that much worse. The homecoming was something he did not earn and did not deserve–he finished fourth. It should have never, ever happened. Seeing Haley miss out on things like Leno only exacerbates my resentment for that as a fan.

I now know 3 Laurens: At the beginning I found her pushy and creepy with Steven Tyler. That set me dead against her. The she became underwhelming and desperate. Now she is funny and likeable.

I don’t really think TPTB reined her in on purpose after the Hollywood rounds. Tiredness [and that heretofore unmentioned asthma] may have done it naturally. Towards the end experience with performing on TV may have kicked in and allowed her natural personality to come out.

Before I comment on this interview (I thought Lauren did a splendid job) just so everyone knows, when I checked the schedule on Leno’s site yesterday, I did this just to make sure, but his show will be reruns all of this coming week starting with the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. You can tell when the show is going into repeats by looking at the episode guide. You will notice it (or at least I do) when the episode numbers are out of sequence.

RE the interview. Like some others mentioned here, I noticed that Lauren’s confidence wasn’t a problem last night at all. Even though she is still having vocal issues, I had a hard time telling it when she was singing. It was more evident during the interview. It seems like once these contestants finish their run on the show, it’s like a 10 pound weight has been lifted from their shoulders because they realize they aren’t having to go in front of the judges anymore. Lauren seems like a very bright girl and she’s got a great sense of humor. I think she has a good chance at having a great career. I can’t wait to see how things unfold for her.

ETA: mj that’s a good point about the labor laws. I suppose I forgot for a second about these 2 being minors.

  • Joyed

I loved her interview and found her totally charming. She does remind me of Pickler (who I adored her season) and I think that kind of interview personality can go a long way. She feel simultaneously honest and open while being really funny.

Also, I thought the way she turned Pierce’s awkward praise of her / slight putdown of Scotty into a hilarious moment was brilliant. Idols often get faced with the “you were so much better than so and so” crap about their idol friends and she is already on her way to handling that like a pro! :)

  • Jon

Yeah, I’m a bit upset that Haley is not getting the interviews like the others are getting because she finished 3rd, but she is going to be on Regis and Kelly on June 2nd. I’m not a 100% sure but I think she’ll be on Ellen eventually. Ellen has been such a fan of hers i just don’t see why she wouldn’t be on. Casey James got to be on last year.

  • http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~hansenkd/BrahmsGuides MahlerFan

I just really hope they can find a way to get Haley on before the tour. She’s an engaging interview, and would just be smokin’ hot with Ricky and the band. It’s a definite loss that it didn’t happen. If Iovine is serious about getting her single out (again, hopefully before the tour), then maybe that will be an opportunity for it.

Thinking back on the situation with Kat McPhee–she did do several appearances singing SotR and such after the finale, but never was on Leno (Elliott and Taylor both were). In hindsight, I wonder if the vocal issues that caused her to miss the first part of the tour had something to do with it. That was kept hush-hush until the tour’s first morning. I don’t know–Kat has been on Leno a few times since then, but never got the post-show appearance. I just really want Haley to get it. That being said, I know I’m hijacking a Lauren-based thread, so I should stop. She was just lovely here. I wish I’d seen more of it earlier on. I also heard her explain why she dropped “Suddeth,” which was a pet peeve of mine. Again, why couldn’t something have been said on the show, like “I’m using my middle name because it flows off the tongue and you won’t be able to pronounce my surname.” Just pretending that her last name was “Alaina,” as she did in the audition, and which was never contradicted by Ryan, came off as damn pretentious. It would have helped to explain it earlier.

  • wfowfowfo

I wasn’t a Lauren fan, but this interview is very cute… “don’t hate on it, you might like it!” She did great with Jay and Pierce – amazing for a 16 year old.

  • Pam

I agree. Lauren and Scotty have a great friendship and I suppose that’s a little bit of an embarrassment for her having someone put down someone she considers to be a good friend but she did handle it very well. I was very impressed with her.

Agree. Every single one of the finalists will hear “you should have won” to the point of nausea for them. They will become experts at how to handle it.

When James went out 4th, Santa Cruz officials asked Idol if they could still have theirs. Santa Cruz welcomed James home, not Idol. Time to put that chip on your shoulder down. It must be getting very heavy.

Lauren has quite the personality. She amazingly held her own with Leno and Piers. I’m impressed big time.

  • Jae

Great interview. I think Lauren is going to have an awesome career. She has a strong voice and an engaging personality. I think in the the next 2-5 yrs we will see great things from her. She is stronger than Pickler and look how well Kellie has done. I loved that she is not having any regrets about how things worked out and if future focused. Very mature of her.

I love Haley, and don’t really care one way or the other, but I saw or read an interview yesterday where Haley was talking about Lauren losing her voice. Haley said she felt bad about it, but she was ready to perform—she didn’t mention that she said ‘no’ to anyone.

  • sue

Haley said she felt bad about it, but she was ready to perform—she didn’t mention that she said ‘no’ to anyone.

Maybe her hesitation was like a “no”, lol. I don’t think Haley would of done it, it was Lauren’s time to shine and she earned that spot. TMZ/ Nigel just wanted to stir up crap to get more viewers and it worked.

Well if Leno was going in order, he forgot Haley. I just realize that, I am a bad fan. :) Oh well, they will get her eventually. Lauren was great, she is growing on me.

  • Landmd

Lauren handle herself really well in the interview, love the AGT dig lols!! Wonder if AGT will go back and review what happened with that?
Lauren is still having breath control issues we have seen all season, wonder if it has more to do with asthma than ability? Gonna go check out her studio’s from the season after hearing her tonight even with her being ill, she sounded a 1000x times better than on idol.

I love Haley hope she gets some media coverage and a single/album!! I saw this tweeted yesterday about Haley and Lauren:

Elliott, for all the yammering and anti-Kat diatribes his fans went off on, got to be on Leno and Kat did not.

Oh, gosh. Yeah, Elliott got to do the “Idol contestant stint” on Leno just like the other finalists his season. However, back then, it was just a stupid skit, and one that was usually designed to embarrass the contestent. I used to dread the Idol appearances on that show. They didn’t perform, nor did they get a sit-down with Jay.

    Lauren is just adorable!

  • gabriel oak

I’ve never had anything against Lauren but since I don’t listen to much country music I won’t be following her career. I agree she came across well on the show.

But according to Haley’s interview with Extra, Haley was asked to pick some songs to sing though she didn’t feel right about it. But she did not say “no” as Lauren said on Leno.

  • panz

Cute. I wish more of their personalities would come out during the show.

One thing though. Big Mac Pizza. Ick!! Sounds disgusting to me.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Good luck to Lauren. I enjoyed her interview and think she’s pretty poised. I hope she rests those chords, though. I’d hate for her to really damage them at this early age.

  • hoosiermama

Lauren’s adorable in the interview! I think she will do just fine.

  • iluvai

I watched this last night and was bummed that they went to commercial in the middle of Lauren’s song. But, I thought she was super funny and charming. I don’t think this is a new Lauren– we got to see bits and pieces of her personality throughout the season. I still love her spot with the mean chef dude. That was so funny. Anyway Lauren sounded so good last night in spite of the vocal chord issue. She has a lot of time to develop herself and I bet in a few years she will really find her way musically. I hope she has a blast with the Idol tour and I can’t wait to see her in the years to come. (I’m feeling optimistic after seeing Allison A.’s thread with her new music.)

edit: Her screen cap up top is unfortunate. lol ;)

  • Lucy1234

I noticed the part about her trying out for American’s Got Talent twice is making it’s way around the web. Pretty funny stuff. The idea of her and Scotty as girlfriend and boyfriend also seems to be of interest on the web.

I haven’t checked recently, but her single is doing well on Itunes, was at #2 overnight and #3 this morning. She’s hanging in there with Scotty who has a big banner as the winner on Itunes.

  • CRB

Lauren should go on a week of vocal rest immediately.

  • http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~hansenkd/BrahmsGuides MahlerFan

“Santa Cruz officials asked Idol if they could still have theirs…”

And Idol should have emphatically said no. I’ll drop the chip the moment Haley gets on Leno. She gets the disadvantages associated with Third Place, but James got something the fourth-place contestant is not supposed to get. I don’t think Haley cares about that, but I sure do. It cheapened the fact that he was eliminated and she was not.

  • http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~hansenkd/BrahmsGuides MahlerFan

Haley will be in New York City with the Top 2 next week and is scheduled to be on Regis and Kelly June 2.

But not Leno. And that’s just wrong.

Correct – if I recall, the footage shown from his homecoming was not in HD, which would indicate the Idol group had nothing to do with it – they likely just obtained it from the local affiliate.

I know that Idol had nothing to do with staging it. But they had to grant permission for it to go forward, which they very much should NOT have done.

  • smn73

I’ll drop the chip the moment Haley gets on Leno. She gets the disadvantages associated with Third Place

Then she should have went home 10th, or 9th or whatever place she was in the bottom!

Some of you Haley fans make me shake my head. You complain she got the shaft when she was in the bottom a bazillion times, and now you complain she gets the shaft when she makes TOP THREE. Really??? I am sure many others would love to have her 3rd place spot, since 3rd is given more opportunities at a record deal. Leno Schmeno. Leno isn’t going to get her closer to a deal and I’d bet you $1 that’s what she really cares about.

And as much as Idol loves to think it controls the world, it may own James at this point (I don’t know when they are “released” from the Idol thumb), but I doubt Idol can really tell the City of Santa Cruz they can’t have a parade! I would imagine the “asking” was more a point of courtsey.

  • debr

i can’t believe that James going home for a parade & big rally bothered you more than Haley being allowed to have her father & mentor on stage with her calming her nerves on the biggest night of her life the final 3. Lauren & Scotty were at a disadvantage , she had an edge over them which is not fair! -they are younger & didn’t get to have their fathers or music teachers up there calming them down, Haley fell & messed up the words & could of fell apart if she didn’t have dear old Dad there to give her backup. How did James going home benefit him or hurt anyone Chances? The city wanted it because their economy is down & this was a way to get some $ into all the businesses which pulled in over a million dollars for the 1 day.
So if you want to be outraged-be outrage over Haley being allowed to have her family member & mentor on the stage which was a first ever for AI.
