I guess I expect that the winner’s single and the contestants will do well on iTunes (well, except for maybe Jordin but she’s certainly redeemed herself). I must say that I’m pleasantly surprised at David Cook’s showing. This for a song (not a single) on an 8 month old album. For me David Cook embodies the best of both Kris and Adam. He has the amazing vocals of Adam AND the amazing connection of Kris. Yup, Idol found, but still enjoying the game.

Word on DCO is that contrary to what has been stated previously, 19 will not release the video of Permanent to iTunes.

A shame, because that was supposed to benefit the charity as well… What a stupid decision.

Chart success doesn’t necessarily translate to quality. I don’t care how many singles Kris sells, I still think it’s a terrible song.

Happy to see that Cook’s album moved WAY up as a result of Permanent. (That’s my favorite song on the album, but I love the whole album–it’s at #8.) Hope it gets a ton of downloads. Also, Adam’s “collection” of his Idol songs is at #2 on the hot 100 chart and Kris’s is at #5. Cook and Adam are in the “what we’re listening to” section. Kris has the #1 ringtone. And Adam and Kris have two of the five top video download. Of course this changes all the time, so keep your eye on it if you’re interested.

Well now I’m impressed with Kris hitting #1 with Kara’s lame song.

I expected that the list would be filled with Kris and Adam songs. The real surprise to me on the list is 86. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Is Anybody Listening?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  from Ten Commandments by Adam Lambert. A song from a failed 2006 musical. I just wish someone had a releasable recording Adam’s 2004 performance of “Come to Me, Bend to Me” from Brigadoon.

Yay Kris! Quite a feat to not only make such a crappy song listenable, but then to top the I-Tunes chart! Amazing! Hope that is a sign of things to come. Simon will have to eat his words if it is!

Hmmm. I doubt their reasons for doing this are honorable. I wonder if they were all taken aback by the Permanent performance and are now hoping to use it for something else. They haven’t released most of the finale performances. It’s possible they are trying to put together a video package and they now think the Permanent performance will be a draw. 19E sucks. Any other theories?

I am so happy about how DC’s album has shot up again and the song Permanent. I love this song. It’s a fuckin shame that the video performance of Permanent won’t be made available…what ¨’s up with that?

Adam’s album is number 1 on Itunes pop and number 2 overall. You just go boyfriend!!!!

(I’m not double counting the so-called “collection” performances separate from the single, because they’re not different. It’s not like either has an album out! Seems like maybe TPTB are trying to pad the iTunes song numbers or something, but anywho… )

I think the fact that they are both selling so strongly is a good sign. If they both can hold on to their fanbases through the summer are deliver albums these fans more or less expect, they should be able to pull off healthy album debuts.

While I agree that Permanent is tons better as a song than CBTM, that performance did give DC a very healthy bump. 25K albums the following week and 20K the week after that, that’s nothing to sneeze at. I do think this bump might just be bigger, though, fingers crossed.

I’ve been listening my Idol I-Tunes downloads on my IPod and just gotta say Kris’s voice is golden and so very what is hot and current right now. I could easily hear him on the radio. I just don’t get why Simon is so hellbent on writing him off. Doesn’t he realize how marketable Kris is?

I am happy to see Kris’s songs doing so well on itunes, as well as Adam’s.

Have mixed emotions about Permanent because the version doing best is not the charity song and is different from what was beautifully performed on finale night. I believe that a lot of people downloaded this believing it was for charity. Someone dropped the ball by not having the charity version available right away and they should make it right.

I can understand Kris selling a lot as he is a new discovery for many people, but Adam fans have mostly been along for the whole ride and have long since completed their purchases. The only stats that I would find telling are stats that include the sales over the entire season.

I heard both Kris and Adams…i didnt really feel anything until I heard Adam sing the words…it just relates more to Adam…maybe because i know his story, his choices in life and the worlds reaction to him…Adam has been through a lot in life …and the drum beat is cooler in his version

WOW….congrats Kris!! That is a HUGE deal especially with that song!! I have to admit I bought the stupid thing and now I acutally find myself singing along and not hating it….I can’t believe it!!! haha I’m really happy Kris is making such an excellent showing on itunes, with all the popularity bar stuff from earlier in the season I really thought he would have a few while Adam would have a ton, it’s nice to see them both hanging in there together.

Adam is number 1, 2, 3, 5 on Itunes top 100 albums. Congrats to Adam and Kris. Adam tops the Albums and Kris tops the singles. Could you ask for a better top 2. They are both winners. Honestly title is nice but sales of records is really what it is all about.

I did get Cook’s performance of Permanent too and I plan on also getting Carrie’s Home Sweet Home. Both are wonderful and go to good causes.

Pleased that Adam has the #2 iTunes Album, #1 in Canada. But were is the Adam pre-sale album?

Also, I noticed that iTunes has the same “A Change is Gonna Come” (3.50 studio) on the site with two different listings. Is that why it is #14 and #33 on the list above?

At least Kris and Adam are making a little bit of money from Itunes. I’m sure both of these boys are grateful, they have worked hard for this. It would be interesting to know how many copies they really do sell. If they sell 50,000 copies max of each of everything released they could haul in close to a $100,000. Not to shabby for giving your life over to a dumb reality show for 3 months. Should be a nice down payment on a house or condo.

The folks at iTunes explained it to me. The iTunes numbers reflect which iTunes listing you purchase. So, #14 “A Change is Gonna Come” and #33 “A Change is Gonna Come” are identical except that #33 is the single from the Adam Lambert Season 8 Favorates album. Same for the Mad World duplicate, two Heartless listings, etc.

Net effect is that there are more AmIdol hits on the Top 100 but the ranking would be higher if combined.

This also happens with other artists on iTunes.

I haven’t bought any of Cook’s music except the silly Rainbow song. Permanent was a great choice. I would have bought it after hearing his performance anyway but the charity donation is a nice bonus.

That said, I think any crap coronation song is guaranteed to hit iTunes #1.

I’m pretty sure that “This is My Now” did not. It finished the week in 9th place on the download charts. Coronation singles don’t get a full week of sales (since Season 6), so you can get to number 1 on iTunes without making number 1 on the weekly downloads. Nevertheless, I seem to recall it never quite got to number 1.

Of course, that year they also released EPs that siphoned of sales from the single (and prior to “The Eagles vs Brittany” rule, albums (which EPs are) sold by a single vendor couldn’t chart on the main Album chart).

Of course, prior to S6, singles were also available on CD singles which significantly siphoned of sales of iTunes too, but because they were Commercial Singles, the sales were combined such that many of them topped the Singles and Hot 100 Chart.

This is the first time in the iTunes coronation single era that we’ve had two coronation singles. Blake did have studio singles for sale after the finale and Archie did have a few live performances for sale that week too. This is the first time that studio versions of all contestants were available and that the runner-up got an official coronation song. This is the first time since Season 4 when both contestants released the same coronation song. This was also done in Season 3. In Season 2 and 5, there were different coronation songs. In Season 1, 6 and 7, the runner-up did not get/have to release the coronation song(s).

I didn’t like the lyric change Adam did on Change is Gonna Come at the end of the song…where he sings “My” change is gonna come rather than “A” change is gonna come……..Would somebody that has downloaded that let me know if he changes the “my” back to “a”…because if so, I would purchase. Thx.

I bought the natural disaster song (Adam’s version) and Is Anybody Listening?, I bought every other song/video of his before, (I had to complete the collection regardless of the suckitude of No Boundaries).
I noticed that Satisfaction isn’t on their anymore as a song, but now they have the video. (they didn’t have that before, right?)

I really don’t believe they did this. iTunes screwed up yesterday which I can remember them doing LOTS of times with other artists I follow, and the only source I remember mentioning the video was David in one of those Fox affiliate interviews. The official press release which was sent out, on Tuesday I think, did not mention the video would be for sale. It only said charity SINGLE. It’s possible David assumed the video would be up too.

kris being #1 is a testament to Kris, his likeability, and the Idol Machine….not Kara’s crappy song. she should thank her lucky stars he was able to make it sound “decent”. (and thats exactly how he even described it to MTV LOL)

mj, I’ve been threatening to do it for months, but I generally like to get all of my iTunes purchases taken care of at once. Yesterday, I spent hours downloading every Kris, Adam and Allison performance. (Yes, I linked from your page. It’s the least I could do after spending so much time here over the season, and eating your bandwidth.) Unfortunately, that meant I had to get Gokey in his duet with Kris. I also bought Cookie‘s charity “Permanent”.

ETA: Yes, I bought all the videos, too, as well as Kris‘s iTunes Pass. And “No Boundaries” (by both guys) is growing on me, too.

1. iTunes screws up mid-week releases like this, frequently. I see it as same-old, same-old.

2. It may actually help Permanent cast a shadow over this year’s crowd because people will mistakenly purchase the album version and then also pick up the charity version. Combined sales could be double what they would have been if the charity version had been released right away.

3. Me? I would pick up one version of the song if I liked it and send the rest of the money I wanted to donate directly to the charity. They will get more money that way.

I actually hope he gets to perform TWO songs during his press tour. I just hate having anyone discover Kris for the 1st time with him singing Boundaries..yuck.

He should offer to save AI money and leave Michael Orlund at home. He can then play his guitar for “Heartless” and whatever other song he chooses to sing that day. Or, if they piano is already there, he could do “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

Michael can go hang with Adam and play the piano for “Mad World” or “Tracks of My Tears”. I’m thinking “Cryin’” and “Whole Lotta Love” won’t work well with just a piano backing. Maybe one day, Idol will spring for a few musicians to tag along.

Earlier today Adam had the #1 album sale, but these charts change so much throughout the day its hard to keep track. I’m happy with #2 though. Particularly since Adam doesn’t have a real first single out yet.

For the record – when the charts were opened up after the finale – Adam had a considerable lead on Kris – I think the sales jumped after his fans realized what had happened. I think Adam had 16 of the top 50 videos this morning as well. It was exactly as was predicted.

I also am very interested in the total #s for the season as I bought all of Adam’s stuff as they came out. I assume alot of Adam’s fans did also. I have listened to both of the coronation songs and I prefer Adam’s. My son, 16, really likes it as it adds just a bit of rock sound to it. I really think he makes it his own. I always think the coronation song will go #1 quickly but will fall the following week. It is new and since so many fans voted for him, it is only natural that it would sell quickly. I just don’t see that song becoming a radio friendly song. It will be really interesting. I don’t know how long it took for David C’s last year before it started playing. I am so happy for both of them. They now need to take advantage of this and start on their albums as soon as possible. Can’t wait!!

Maybe you have a bad download, since my live version of ‘Permanent” is at the same tempo as the album version.

In regards to recording a radio friendly version, it’s my understanding this discussion was in regards to making it longer (at least 3 minutes) since that seems to work better with radio programming. The rock rift included on the live version would accomplish that.

^^ I don’t think Permanent was ever honestly considered as a radio single. It’s just not radio friendly, no matter how good the song is (and IMHO it’s beautiful).

I’ve been playing the two versions back to back, and they actually are pretty much the same tempo and everything, except for the instrumentation changes. And, DC’s actually called the song a “piano lullaby” in an interview, and with the studio version under 3 minutes, I don’t think it was ever meant to be radio friendly. As for the band version change up, I always thought was simply to make it band-friendly because he’s not traveling with a full orchestra, and adding the interlude makes up for the loss of the strings. I think this is a wonderful song, but I never envisioned something so sad to be on the radio, personally. This was the perfect use for it, IMO.

However, I do think some people are buying both versions because they are significantly different, and they may like both. I know that I prefer the live version, but miss the strings in the intro of the album version. And the cheering is a tad loud on the live as well. Also, it appears they’re finally getting it a little together with exposure for the charity single Permanent. I’ve now seen it as a flashing ad at the top of the AI 2009 main page, as part of “What we’re Listening To” on the iTunes main page, something else on pop I think, and they’ve now added it among the other singles and videos at the bottom of the AI 2009 page as well. All in all, not too shabby.

I haven’t read all of the comments but LOL at them releasing both versions of “No Boundaries”. I guess Kara wants those royalties! Two versions are better than one.

I dont think that assumption holds very true. If it did, Adam’s No Boundaries and A Change Will Come would be much higher then they are.

well, if we are to believe the leaked iTunes story a month ago, kris was doing just fine with his songs (a bit odd for an “obscure” contestant). obviouslly winning (and the heartless performance) brought him enough exposure to take over the charts…however, its interesting that danny only has one song on the top 100 despite only going out 3rd. and this is the guy the judges kept pushing?!?!

I didn’t either, but you know, the more you hear it, the less you are overwhelmed by the sadness and the more you can just appreciate the really haunting, well written song and Cookie’s vocal performance. If that makes sense. I dunno, Tears In Heaven is one of Eric Clapton’s highest charting singles and it doesn’t get much sadder that than that, so there are always exceptions to the “this is what usually accounts for radio friendly” rule if the song ends up really striking a chord. Re: missing the strings…I dig when Neal does the bowing thing with the guitar to replace them, but I didn’t think he did that on AI. I absolutely love the transition from the piano to the full band and back again with the remix. It’s like the music is reminiscent of the breaking an emmotional dam and then all of this powerful stuff gushes out, and then the return to the piano is plugging the damn back up, which transitions to the change in the lyrics “forgive my promise that you’ll never see me cry” sans the word broken. If that makes sense.

Last night, during the drive home (i.e. prime-time for radio), on my city’s flagship Pop station, I was stunned to hear them play Adam’s version of “No Boundaries” (stunned, because I’ve never heard them play a coronation song, EVER, and coronation songs are slow to even come to the AC stations in these parts).

So, yes, I think both will get airplay. Sustained airplay? Who knows?

Already, after one day, Kris’s version of “No Boundary” has a Nielsen BDS monitored AI (audience impression) of 1.6 million. It is 353 on the Hot 100 building chart (before recurrents are removed – the chart only has two days worth of airplay) and BB announced today in it’s ChartBeat that it is number 31 on the AC building chart (4 days into the week). According to Mediabase, he’s number 37 on the AC 7 day rolling chart and has a total of 207 spins (AC:47, HAC:74, Country:4, Pop:81, Rhy:1).

Well, I take back my last comment on not buying Kris’s version…I watched the Bromantic clip of Kris and Adam’s hug, and my bitter heart melted. Even if I won’t listen to his music often, I will now buy all the Kris songs, just to support such an awesome guy. Maybe his music will grow on me. The charity version of Permanent needs to find a new base of exposure since Itunes and Idol are barely giving it any. According to those who are livetracking its progress, it hit a peak– for now– at #13, but has since slipped to #14.

It needs to get into the top ten so it will appear on the front page because the album version of Permanent is still at #7, so I have the feeling that a lot of people are coming to that front page and just assuming the one on the top ten list is the one for charity. But, if the real charity version can make top ten too, then those individuals should be able to tell the difference.

It’s a shame, because going by the length of the bars of the two versions, the total number of Permanent downloads would probably have it ranked #4 on Itunes right now if they counted them as one track (and that’s with almost zero promo on the Itunes site). And then ALL the returns would be going for cancer research.

There are just slightly different windows into the airplay.

The Mediabase ones that are often looked at (and are the ones that can be found on AllAccess or QuickCut) are rolling charts. The report the airplay over the last 7 days, every day. They are a window into the last week. Songs that have been released less than 7 days are at a disadvantage (will rank lower).

Building charts are what we typically get from Nielsen BDS (reported in BB or on various sites). Building charts are reset to zero at the beginning of the chart period. All songs start out at the same point. Each day, stats are added until the chart is built at the end of the week. Newer songs can make an impact sooner, but they are still at a disadvantage if they have been out fewer days than the chart has been building.

After 7 days, the building and rolling charts would look the same (well rolling charts with a 7 day window).

Well, I totally bought “Mountains and Hurricanes” because I love Kris. The recorded version isn’t HORRIBLE horrible.

Anywho, congratulations to both Kris and Adam! I hope that they both have continued success in the future.

iTunes and AI are not the only ones at fault here (last I looked this afternoon it was prominent on the AI page on iTunes). He’s got over 170,000 friends on MySpace and that page is never properly utilized.

Hopefully everyone at Itunes, the recording company, the writers, etc. that are involved with the downloads of “Permanent” will support David Cook’s cause in memory of his beloved brother. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that either version of Permanent now on sale will be counted towards David’s cause. People aren’t heartless and due to the entire ambiguity of which version is for charity I’m sure there are measures in place to allow a certain amount from either version to be donated. I was wondering how the albums that are charting work on itunes. The season 8 favorite albums of Kris and Adam. They have never had this before. So the album charts on the album chart. Do the songs on these albums also chart on the song chart as individual downloads? Are they like other compilation albums where the album is not counted on billboard but the individual songs are counted off of each album?
